Set way back off Umstead Rd. (between Chapel Hill & Carrboro), Umstead Park is a great place to spend a fun, outdoorsy afternoon. It seems to be a little older than some of the other parks in the area, but it's nonetheless very well-maintained and popular with students and residents. The park has a lot of athletic facilities, with tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts, plus a baseball/softball diamond. There are also a few walking/running trails, which is nice since the area is pretty heavily wooded. There's also a children's play area, with jungle gyms and such, but it's currently closed due to storm damage. I expect that the town of Chapel Hill will have it up and running very soon.
