Sometimes pre-going out drinking just calls for sake bombs with delicious rolls of sushi. Umi Sake House was happy to accommodate my date and I.
If you happen to be in Belltown and really wonderful sushi rolls accompanied by great cocktails is what you are craving, then this is my number one suggestion. Love the decor. Love the service.
Went to Umi for a double birthday party recently. Honestly, this could be one of my top picks for sushi bars in the area. The quality was fantastic, our service was awesome, and the overall atmosphere gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. All things that should lead to a much, much higher score.
My problem stems from some troubling things I saw on the menu. Many of you who have been there may have noticed a very pricey fish on the menu; Bluefin Tuna. Now, you may wonder why this fish is exponentially more expensive than the other tunas available. I can tell you why: It's because Bluefin Tuna is a critically endangered species on the brink of collapse.
As a person who cares deeply about sustainable fishing practices, I was quite turned off by the fact that this otherwise excellent eating establishment would serve a delicacy that is on the verge of extinction to those who are willing and able to pay for it.
Until I hear of this item becoming removed from the menu permanently, I won't be returning.
Best sushi in seattle (that i've tried so far). :)
They have a "Late Happy Hour" so you can get your friday night started off right :)
Happy hour (4-8pm and 11pm-1am)
(18% gratuity is included on ALL Late night Happy hour. so don't tip twice if you don't mean to.)
Yummy Deliciousness
- Sashimi Set (Tuna, shrimp, salmon, yellowtail and albacore. I think you choose 3 or 4 of them)
- First Ave Roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, tobiko with spicy tuna and spicy mayo)
- Umi House Roll (Creamy scallop)
- Yellow Fever (tuna with yellowtail and spicy 'fever sauce")
- Casino Royale (spicy! and oh so good)
- Ultimate dragon
- Mango Tango (the mango takes away some of the spicyness from other rolls)
(We tried a LOT Of rolls for our large group. these were the ones that I could remember - by looking at the menu. otherwise I didn't try anything that i didn't like! - that says a lot! )
Cocktails
- Lychee Sake (best!)
- Pear Sake (was just ok)
(And they have some others, like ginger, lemon, coffee sake. and the asian beers like Sapporo and Ichiban)
The waiter service was pretty nice. he was attentive (i can't remember his name) and was great with making sure we got enough food and drinks for the few hours we were there.
All the food I've had here is fine - nothing to write home about, but still quite tasty. They also have a nice happy hour that runs late in the bar area, which is a plus. On the downside, I haven't had that super amazing dish here yet, the service is not great (by any stretch) and it can get quite loud - like you can't hear your date loud - on busty nights... i was also there on a night when a crazy guy fired off 10-20 shots into the air outside, so that speaks to the part of town... I'll definitely try it again, but I'm planning to make a point of going earlier and weeknights only.
I like this place's decor, their rolls are darn delicious, and their service is pretty good. There is always a wait (which is saying something good) and I'm def not willing to wait forty five to an hour for the food, but if I can get in for happy hour I'm happy. Oh, how I do love the rolls though.
I tried the Hotter than Hell!!! roll and it burned my face off in a way that was both awesome and agonizing. So the rolls here get pretty crazy and all, but I want to focus on the non-crazy cuts I consumed...talkin' bout nigiri.
Sat at the bar and the nigiri was served up by our chef who knew best: what was fresh, what was most delicious, and his recommendations made the menu moot. No frills, just midnight happy hour nigiri expertly served and none short of spot-hitting.
Wonderful location. Also, I realized while gazing at my best friend over some very creative rolls ("Tropical Paradise" with salmon, avocado and blueberry sauce.. mmm) that we both look more attractive and mature in this setting, eating sushi and drinking wine. (More mature and attractive than, say, shoving big burgers in our mouths at Boka.)
Plus, we got a table for 4 in the bar at 6pm, which meant we could take our time while Happy Hour prices lasted until 8. However, I will say, the Happy Hour isn't too astounding because the portion sizes are about half of what's on the menu, when the items on the menu are around $10. So if you order two items from HH menu, you're paying the same, but bonus -- you get to try more sty-uff!!
Service is pretty wonderful; the people who deliver the food are gracious and professional.
-1 star because it takes minutes too long from your server to get second, third round of drinks. I'm thirsty, dammit. Or at least my buzz is.
Sake To Me baby! Seattle doesn't mess around!
This place was one of the biggest highlights for my trip to Seattle. The ambiance was off the hook (yes, I had to take it old school with that). Very classy feel but not too classy where you feel that you can't get a little rowdy...its a sake house, you're entitled to get a little rowdy right? It didnt hurt either that the waitresses weren't too bad looking either. =)
Food:
Crispy Fried Prawns - The shrimp itself wasn't too memorable but I've never tried it wrapped in egg noodle before so I give them credit for being creative. The best part of this dish was the sauce...it was a nice sweet flavor with a bit of a kick at the end from the peppers.
Lobster Tempura - When you're in Seattle, you need to eat as much seafood as you can. Its fresh and the flavor shows in every bite. This dish did not disappoint. Love every piece of it. If I didnt think I would get kicked out for my behavior...I would've made love to this dish right on the table. The lobster was fresh, moist, flavored and sauced well. I wasn't gnawing on it for minutes on end like other places.
Black Sesame Ice Cream - Black Sesame and Ice Cream? I know right, weird combination but it works. This is one of those dishes that really make you appreciate cooking. The blend of flavors that you wouldn't think go together that somehow find a happy marriage to one another. Awesome dish.
Sake - As mentioned above, when in Rome...do as the Romans do. In this case, order sake. There was just too many sakes to choose from that I just went ahead and did the Sake Flight (3 Drink Sampler). Gotta give props to Joann for making such great selections. All went down pretty smoothly and the dessert sake (I think it was called the HouHouShu Rose?) was a nice ending to an already happy story.
Used to come here monthly --Belltown is a good place to grab a bite before heading out for the evening. Happy Hour at UMI is so nice. The atmosphere, the food (spider roll, crunchy seattle roll, and spicy tuna roll), the drinks (orange blossom is yummy) the service, the quality, and prices are a good find.
Miss this place. :)
I love the ambiance of this place. It's a really cute japanese izakaya restaurant with very modern decor. You and your party sit at a non-traditional lounge table and sofa-like chairs.
calamari - i LOVE the sauce on this sweet and sour calamari... comes with a salad too if you're into the grassy stuff.
miso black cod - super tender and moist
grilled ika - needs more flavor but still good enough
seafood soup - this tasted like tum yum (thai hot and sour soup)
steamed egg with seaweed, shrimp and chicken - you can probably make this at home.
assorted rolls - too many to remember
fresh sashimi - sake & raw scallops
We went nuts on the desserts tho... had the mochi platter (don't get this... you can just buy it from the stores), sesame ice cream (yummy!), green tea tiramisu, and vanilla fried tempura ice cream. Yums!
They had late night drink specials like lychee sake and martini, pear sake and etc. Food was kinda pricey for izakaya though. Otherwise it's good!
I went to Umi on a Thursday night, and even though it was very busy our service was prompt, accurate, and friendly. The food was delicious! I decided to be adventurous and ordered a roll with strawberries in it, and any reservations I had were put to rest when I tasted it. I've been trying to make something like it at home since then with no success.
I was also impressed with their cocktail list, and I like the creativity involved in their sake cocktails. I'll definitely be back!
Lots of inventive rolls here and great sashimi. The prices are a little steeper than at other sushi restaurants of similar quality. I like the faux-outdoor courtyard area with the wooden tables, benches and plants. It creates a unique kind of atmosphere. Happy hour here is a great value but plan to wait at least half an hour to snag a seat. Just thinking about the hustle and bustle of this place can make me tired so only come here if you are feeling zen or made reservations in the dining room.
I have visited this place once before and was impressed.
The second time around they definitely kept their standing in my book.
LUV this place for Happy Hour Sushi.
The only complaint I have would be that the bar area could be a bit larger.
I'll still continue to come here though!
It has a great, stylish atmosphere.
The staff has always been friendly and prompt.
Who could complain about the prices for Happy Hour, also??!!
3 people, a couple to few drinks each and of course quite a bit of sushi... We could have spent well over a $100 and it was well below.
My favs from Happy Hour would include:
Bad Boy Roll
Cali-Crunch Roll
Sashimi Set
Fan of sushi or not (they do have other things to eat), DEFINITELY worth going to over and over again!!
Coming from the SF Bay Area, I admit that I have been spoiled by great Japanese cuisine, but Umi Sake House really gives SF Japanese restaurants a run for their money.
The food here was fresh and amazing; the Mango Tango is one of the most simple yet well balanced and flavor filled rolls I have ever had in my life! The sashimi tasted like it was just caught and don't be shy with the drinks here! They offer a wide variety of Sakes and drinks from their bar and some truly amazing waiters and waitresses. Don't forget dessert!!
I definitely recommend this place time and time again.
Love it! Great happy hour. Friendly staff. Good food.
The only downside might be slightly awkward seating - depending on where you end up. (But that's a stretch - I was just digging for a downside!)
I need to go back!
Umi sake house is by far the best sushi in Seattle. The fish is always extremely fresh, but what really gets me here is the creativity of the rolls and the portions for the price. They rolls have amazing blends of flavor, and they are unexpectedly huge for their average $12 price. An amateur mistake here is to order way too much, so be careful.
If you're more of a sashimi or nigiri fan, I highly recommend the Cherashi bowl. At only $22, this is the largest cherashi bowl I've seen and can easily feed 2 people.
Lots of people rave about the happy hour, but personally I think it's always happy hour here. The happy hour prices are about half price, but the portions (for sushi at least) are also about half. Better to get what you really want off the menu. Seriously, 2 people can usually get stuffed here and drink sake for $50.
I just realized I haven't reviewed Umi Sake House and I am embarrassed. It is one of few spectacular restaurants that truly stand out in Seattle. I have frequent visitors from New York City, and when I take them here, they all agree this blows away the most expensive and trendy Sushi restaurants there. Especially when you get the bill.
I'd like to give it 3.5 stars, but apparently I can't. Bummer. I give 4 stars for HH, 3 stars for dinner. Dinner just seems way over priced. For HH, there was 4 of us: we ordered 6 things off the HH menu plus 5-6 drinks and our total bill was $60. Totally reasonable I think. Dinner for 2 would have been about the same price, if not more.
Ambiance is ok, some seating areas are a little too noisy for me (I can barely hear what the person across from me is saying). Decore is nice, service has been good.
For sure I'll go again, but will push for HH.
Happy hour review --
HH here was awesome. It lasts only from 4-6pm on weekdays in the restaurant and then til 8pm if you're up front or at the bar. If you get there early and snag a table, you'll have a great experience.
The happy hour menu is cheap and pretty extensive. Good variety of sashimi and sushi (including fun rolls) and other eats as well. The portion sizes are good too. The alcohol is a good price too and you get a large pour of sake!
Faves: salmon sashimi/sushi, short ribs, junmai sake, calamari, spicy tuna roll.
Definitely visit this place if you get a chance. Our waiter was awesome as well -- very attentive. Appreciated that he came by the table at 10 til for the "last call"!
I am a firm believe that this is one of the top happy hours for sushi in Seattle.
I thoroughly enjoyed the Sushi Set B during this happy hour visit. For $5 you get one piece each nigiri Tuna, Salmon, Yellowtail and Albacore. I was so pleased with the quality and texture of my fish with this set that I had to order a second set. The cuts were perfect and the fish so tender it really fell apart in my mouth, just the way it should.
My friend L was all about the being fancy and getting the Toro and Albacore. She also was kind enough to share with me her Ahi Tuna Poke Salad, which we consumed with a quickness.
Get the Sushi Set B. Its good stuff!
Oh, the toilet seat still doesn't warm my butt. What up with THAT Umi?

I came to Umi the other day with a friend and was very pleased with the food.

I would love to try this place again when I am not recovering from a nasty cold.
The fish was fresh, rolls were reasonably priced. Their appetizers definitely caught my eye more than the rolls. The rainbow tartare was delicious, fresh and spot on.
Their specials were also extremely fun. Fun? A range of various, seasonal fishes - and all available in individual pieces as well as sets. I finally tried the much lauded geoduck - which i did enjoy. The fact that I could try a singular piece was especially attractive to me and gets an extra smile :)
Their specialty rolls would have been over the top good save one fact: their sauces are much too sweet for my tastes - and I don't know how it happened but we ended up with 3 very cloyingly sweet sauces.
Ambiance was fun... I had seen previous reviews that noted it was loud. I'm glad I was prepared for this. It is not an intimate dining experience by any means.
Sake cocktails were tasty and well crafted. Again, I had to be careful not to order any that sounded overly sweet but would (at least in my cocktail tastebud) stay on the drier side of life.
I'm open to trying this place again with clearer nasal passages and the lack of tissues in hand and actually look forward to it.
Holy motherload of douchebag hell. Hell.
Picture Thursday or Friday night Blowfish with the bridge and tunnel weekend Nobu crowd, added with a whooole lotta Vancouver and ta-daaaa! Umi.
If you insist on going, just repeat to yourselves: good for people watching, good for people watching, otherwise you'd be disappointed with the below average overpriced food and way pricy alcohol.
The only highlight is the ridiculously hot bartender. Too bad he is such a horrible mixologist, otherwise he would've been the end of me. Second thought, that is a blessing in disguise.
Bottomline: Save your money for Blowfish or Nobu, where the douchebags and food aren't trying so hard. Keep it real, Seattle.
Some friends suggested meeting here after a concert. We arrived pretty intoxicated and managed to find seats at the bar which made the convenience of ordering more booze a little TOO convenient!
A few sake cocktails later, we convince ourselves to try one of the sushi rolls. We left the selection completely up to the bartender. He asks us if we like spicy, "Absolutely" we reply.
What seemed like minutes later, a beautiful roll appears before us. My friend and I inhale the whole roll, not sure if it was soooo good cuz we were drunk or if it really was that good. How else to determine... another roll please! And I wasn't even hungry when we started this whole fiasco!
I have no idea what two rolls he selected for us, but they were Fantastic!
Saw that they have a happy hour, can't wait to hit that up!
I've always loved having sushi in Seattle and made a point to get a recommendation for dinner. Umi was AMAZING!
My husband and I shared the 007 roll, the small omakase sashimi, and hamachi kama. Plenty of food. We also had a sake + an elderflower sake cocktail. We left full and happy...for $80. Having lived in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Chicago, I thought this was a super fantastic deal.
The 007 roll was delicious (spicy tuna, avocado, cucumber wrapped with salmon, lime, cilantro, shishito pepper and jalapeno on top) - I hate spicy tuna that is heavy on creamy, mayo spiciness; this one was clean, fresh, and spicy! The small omakase sashimi was plenty (2 pieces each of 8-9 different type of fish), and the hamachi kama was huge (must have been a big fish!)
Umi is trendy and creative, with a gigantic menu, so if you don't like anything but traditional sushi items, this may not be your place. And extra points for having Open Table reservations!
The best spicy tuna roll I've ever had, and my favorite sushi spot in town.
The late-night happy hour is where you should be after ten in Belltown. My first trip was after my friend invited me. I wasn't even hungry and we ended up having about four rolls worth each. I'd seriously thought I'd just lost my taste for sushi, after a number of very average experiences across town.
And then the spicy tuna roll. Without question already my favorite roll in general, Umi's spicy tuna is unreal. I believe my friend and I ended up ordering a total of three between us. And now that I've written this review, I'm pretty sure I can't go another 24 hours without going. Goodbye.
One of my top picks for Seattle Sushi restaurants!! They have a great selection of sake and a variety of sashimi & rolls. Jose is the Executive Chef, and always takes care of me. Majority of the time, he knows the fish and tastes I prefer, so will make me custom rolls to my liking.
In the times he's not there, I would suggest the Poke Salad, Tropical Paradise roll (salmon, strawberry, avocado, tobiko, cucumber wrapped with tuna & mango, served with blueberry sauce), Pretty In Pink (crab, scallop, tobiko & mayonnaise mix with avocado wrapped in soy paper & topped with avocado) and the 007 (spicy tuna, avocado & cucumber wrapped with salmon, lime, cilantro, shishito pepper & jalapeno).
They also have a great Happy Hour from 4-6 everyday! It's very popular & busy so expect to wait or show up early. During that time rolls & sushi sets range from $4-8, beers-$3 and sake for $5.
The atmosphere is very hip & stylish. Doesn't hurt to have a young, attractive staff either.
OK this is the best happy hour in town IMHO. I sit at the bar and down pint after pint of Sapporo and stuff myself with plate after plate of fresh generous cuts of nagiri and sashimi. I am also fond of that damn bad ass bad boy roll!!
So go and sit at the bar when you do because happy hour last til 8pm there. I might be sitting next to you. I stay away from this place on the weekends as it is douchebag central but so is all of belltown these days.
We spent way more than we intended too but it was well worth it. Best sushi I've had in the Northwest. Thanks to the kind woman at the dvd shop for recommending it!!
I called my sushi chef friend who used to work out here and he recommended this place. I was not about to not take his advice, so I went with my parents and sister.
Happy Hour 4-6pm. Took advantage of this:
Fried prawns wrapped in crunchy noodles, short rib, sashimi, seattle roll, salmon skin roll (not so cruchy but still good) and the unagi roll...washed it down with a $3.50 Sapporo...yummy...I'm coming back when I visit Seattle again!!!
This restaurant is by far the best Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. Thanks to the Marriot bartendar who recommended this place. Came by on a friday night at about 9:45pm and it was packed. There was a 30minute wait, so I definitely recommend getting reservations.
They have a great selection of rolls, and unique names. We were only able to try 3 of their items... We started with the rainbow tartare... mmMmmm tower of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, shrimp & avocados with spicy ponzu & wasabi aioli. The tropical paradise is a must try -Salmon, strawberry, avocado, tobiko, cucumber wrapped
with tuna & mango, served with blueberry sauce. Sounded kinda eh.... fruits? Blueberry sauce? I was wrong. The flavors worked so well together. The other roll we tried was the umi house roll which was scallops topped with tuna. All of their fish were so fresh, so soft... melts in your mouth. Yum! I want more.
This place gets 5 stars because it's happy hour menu ROCKS! Fantastic selection of cold/hot items - we ordered sake, the grilled short ribs (my favorite), then the Salmon skin roll, the cali-crunch, the crunchy shrimp, yellow-tail and salmon sashimi. We finished off with a spicy tuna roll and some shishamo - wowee - it was great. I was so stuffed, I did not have room for dessert. The best part and the reason for the 5-stars is that this whole meal worked out to be $23 dollars per person WITH tip!
Now I know why Umi Sake House is so popular! My friend recommended this place and for a Thursday night it was PACKED. We made a reservation an hour in advance and our table was ready by the time we arrived.
I know the name of the restaurant says "Sake House" but the bf ended up having beer and I tried one of their Goldenberry sake-free cocktails. It had berry puree in it and was almost slushy like. It was really refreshing and yummy but I couldn't really tell if there was actually an alcohol in it. =/
I really wanted wakame salad for our appetizer but they ran out!! Instead we opted for the kani salad (cucumber, avocado, and snow crab) which was still really refreshing and light. The crab meat was really sweet and I heart avocado We also had the rainbow tartare which was really pretty and yummy (I ate most of the tuna, the bf finished the rest).
Umi Sake House's menu is extensive too - oh the decisions!!! Be warned though, the rolls are GINORMOUS. We definately over-ordered. Two rolls really would have been enough food for the both of us, especially after appetizers, but we ordered FOUR - our server should have warned us... We had the First Ave Roll (shrimp tempura, avocado, cucumber, and spicy tuna) which was REALLY GOOD - probably my favorite of the night. We also had the Ocean Roll (crab, avocado, spicy tuna), Rainbow Roll, and Spicy Cassidy Roll (yellowtail, jalapeno, salmon and avocado).
Dinner was a little pricey because we definately over-ordered but everything was delicious! The bf even had the leftovers the next morning (they pack wasabi and soy sauce packets for you)!
If I'm ever back in Seattle I'll definately come back.
I eat sushi like some people eat mash potatoes. Japanese food has become the constant that gives me hope. It's just that important to my life.
* Ginger Sidecar is my new best friend. One sip of this cocktail, I'm buzzed and in love. Debonair and potent like a fragrant concoction.
* Happy Hour Tempura was decent. I prefer light and crispy panko batter. This one resembled beer-batter.
* Enoki & Chive pieces were awesome as always.
* The Panda Roll is healthy with seared albacore and all, but that sesame sauce looks like a rain mud puddle. Visually pleasing goes beyond the plating sometimes.
* And wanting to be a traditionalist tonight, I added dessert to my order, Green Tea Tiramisu. A slice of layered green cake with a strawberry. Tiramisu gone wrong, however, still very tasty.
I love Umi Sake House. It must be my way of venturing socially. And still I can't seem to give them a five. But I want too. Really... I do. This is true.

Simply the best in town! Everything is good here: miso, tempura, blackened cod, unagi roll, caterpillar roll, lobster soup (spicy but yum), lychee martini. The only thing I didn't like was the veggie roll because it had some sour taste and was dry.
Service is always quick, especially when you choose to sit at a table with a reservation on it. Once I did this and we only had 30 minutes to eat. We were surprised at the speed and quality of the fast sit down service. I like getting my food quickly :)
Dear Umi Sake House,
You inspire me. You are creative with your rolls, generous with your happy hour portions, and of course, make great cocktails to go with your large, robust menu.
Your spicy tuna roll is actually spicy. Your shrimp tempura roll is deliciously tender and crunchy. Your grilled garlic short ribs are flavorful and meaty. And last but not least, your spicy ginger chicken is so yummy that I could eat it alone over a bed of sushi rice and be perfectly happy.
Thank you for being awesome, Umi.
Forever Yours,
Shirley
I love Umi! I love Happy Hour Sushi (so much that I have made Happy Hour Sushi a proper noun!)! Fresh and delicious with lots of variety. The only downside is that it's in Belltown (not a fan of Beltown).
Rolls of all sorts!
Umi Sake house provides a wonderful array of unique sushi rolls that can make you dizzy as you decide what you want.
The restaurant is very hip and full of Seattle's young and trendy business professionals.
I have to say I give this place my definite admiration for taking a classic food and turning it into something fun and unique.
The last place I've had "crazy" rolls like this was in the Bay Area.
Prices are reasonable and parking sucks, but that's just Belltown.
Be careful with some of the rolls you order, they can be drizzled with sauce and the taste of the roll seam to disappear under such heavy saucing.
I will be going back here to try a few other things, definitely worth a second trip.
i suppose every upstart glossy neighborhood needs a couple of pretentious, overly priced sushi restaurants. Umi satisfies that belltown quota with flying colors. i think i've had better rolls and sashimi at my local 99 ranch. even the salmon was just OK...you'd expect better from a restaurant in a town with salmon in it's backyard.
avoid the chef's choice sashimi plate! the price point is practically a scam for what they give you.
My boyfriend likes the sushi. I like that they have draft Kirin Ichiban. It's in Belltown, so the clientele is well, Belltown-y. Friendly service.
Whatevs, Umi... You're all right, I guess.
I really wish I could put half-stars cuz this place is at least a 4.5! A very nice, warm, modern sushi and sake spot with excellent service and super delicious sushi, inventive rolls, and tasty cocktails. FREE EDAMAME...now that's service! A little pricy for regular dinner, but the happy hour seems pretty decent. A plus for the people working there that are from the 808...it's nice to run into a little bit of home. I would totally come here again in a heartbeat.
Excellent Food! The sushi and sashimi are amazing! So fresh and beautiful! We arrived for happy hour late, but we were able to order a few items right at last call when we got seated. They have a very extensive happy hour menu, and our server had mentioned all rolls were full portions! We will be back very soon to take advantage of the happy hour menu!
Our server was excellent and very attentive and professional. I felt bad for her because a large party next to us were pretty much straight up rude, loud, and each time she came back to drop a drink, or side of something off, they continuously kept ordering one item at a time. And in the end, they couldn't do math properly with their bill and demanded seperate checks! Shame on you guys!! When people dine out, they should be civil and respectful, and 15 mins of simple math and addition would of solved the problem. In my opinion, if you cannot be civil and nice, and know how to do math, people should just stay at home.
But the amazing thing was she was very nice, and eventhough we could tell she was super busy, she was still very very attentive and was able to answer all of our questions promptly and clearly! I can NEVER do what she does!
Umi has a very extensive sake selection! We've never had sake before but took some recommendations and they were excellent! I tried sake in glasss, and some sake cocktails as well!!
If you come here, I will recommend "knockout" roll, its spicy and delicious, bad boy rolls, body of sin, and the toro sashimi! So delicious and sooo buttery! And try the lychee sake drink!
We were very happy with full tummies when we left! EXCELLENT!
