When I lived in Boston, I went to the same stylist for years. I've been longing for that in L.A.... a stylist who listens, someone who can cut a great pixie and help me through the growing pains when I decide to change it up and grow it out. I've finally found her.

Go. Now.
I have one word for this salon - Jennifer Thomas. She is an incredible stylist and has been doing my hair for 12+ years. She is a color specialist and now she is doing Keratin straightening treatment. My hair has looked outstanding and I kvel from the compliments I have been getting. Thanks for making me look like a million bucks Jennifer!
This is perhaps the biggest hair salon you will ever see ( unless you move to New York). Everyone is freindly and nice and the service is superb. Ask for Aaron, and you will get a haircut and a show. he is on the second floor and is absolutely a delight. He is always full of funniest stories and you dont realize how time passes by while you are getting your hair done by him. he has been looking younger every year I have known him ( and I have known him for 10 years). I am going to ask him next time what his secret is...
I used to be intimidated by big, grand, high end, and perhaps gaudy salons like Umberto, but I was recommended to a stylist there and I gave it a try. First of all, the stylist, now my stylist, has got skills! Best hair cuts of my life! And the salon itself is beautiful, especially upstairs under the skylights. It's like being groomed in an Italian villa, or at least Ceasars Palace.
You might expect snootiness at a place like this, but not so! The staff is extremely friendly, from the shampoo ladies to Umberto himself! I was surprised to see Umberto, with all his success, still styling hair and greeting clients with a smile. These people are down to earth and talented. Worth every penny!
YAY!! I FOUND ERIN JOHNSON..... she just moved back to Umbertos and I went in this weekend and got my color & cut done and this salon is so amazing Erin is amazing and I'm so happy that i found her. She is the only person ill ever trust with my hair. i lost her for a few months but I'm back and happy as ever. I LOVE her, I LOVE the new location, the salon is so professional and they even have a cafe if you get hungry ( amazing ) . Oh and valet parking in the back..... getting your hair done has never been so easy.
Alex rocks.
I had very very long curly thick hair when I found Alex. After a while, I was sort of jealous of all the girls sporting the short look so we cut it off with shockingly good results (even my boyfriend eventually came around). Alex knows how to compliment your face with a cut and at this point I trust him to know what I want more than I trust myself. Highly recommend him for girls with curly hair who need to find someone who "knows curly."
The salon itself is fine - a bit pricey and sort of outmoded, but they compensate by having a pretty decent selection of hair care products and other assorted stuff that you don't really need but could convince yourself to buy.
I used to get my hair colored here a few years back and I highly recommend Toni if you're into being blond!! She's pretty darn good. The place IS a bit pricey but then again...show me one in Beverly Hills that ISN'T pricey!!
The main reason I like this place...other than for a cut or color...is for the big selection of hair accessories and shampoos and the like. They even have hairdryers/brushes, etc. for sale near the counter where you pay.
I was in there today and bought shampoo and conditioner from some brand I've never even heard of (I'm a product whore so I'll try anything!), these really cool matte, gold bobby pins and those snappy clips like from childhood. Pretty cool stuff. They also threw in a BUNCH of samples...good SIZED samples at that!!
I've gone to Ferdie for 10+ years for haircuts and highlights and have followed him to at least 3 other salons before he landed at Umberto. He gives great cut, color and conversation. It costs about $200 but you feel pampered when you leave...a perfect prelude to lunch and shopping in Beverly Hills!
When it comes to hair cutting and salon selection, I am super choosy. I have had terrible experiences and settled down at Umberto in 2001. Although the reception staff is not particularly friendly, they do their job really efficient and very professionally. It is just one amazingly well-functioned place where things are get done and of course, the stylists' skill(at least the ones I have had) is something you can always trust. I have had James Gomez for a few years. Great stylist with no attitude. Genuinely nice person whom you can trust! I
