I went here for happy hour on thursday and i have 3 words for you:
Chimay on tap. Winner.
It gets pretty crowded so if you are a group you should get there by 7pm at the latest to get a table.
Met up with some friends for dinner and drinks here, unfortunately the day of the Yankee parade last week. Beyond the drunks, this place rocks. The bar is HUGE. I'm talking the longest bar I've seen in NYC.
I had a cheeseburger and it was completely and totally drool worthy. My waiter with the adorable Irish accent was not so bad either.
They also have outdoor seating which is a bonus in the summer.
As other reviewers attest, the ratio does swing towards suits, but it's the financial district, what do you expect?!? :)
So apparently this place is not named after the president, but if he were alive he would certainly not mind a fresh pint at this place...
lego my blouse I'm going back!
It served its purpose..LOTS of space and good drink selection. The food selection looked awesome with all the faves on special:
Prime Rib
Lobster
Crab
But alas, I didn't try them so I can't comment but will update when I do. The place was a little pricey and didn't really have a personal touch. But would be a great place to bring a group and I can see by the layout with outdoor seating it would be awesome in the summer. Will be here again.
When questioned on a good lunch location in the Financial District, I received a lot of, "Go to Ulysses!" What the hey, why not? I met some friends for a lunch, and of course, had to first find parking. The streets are narrow and difficult to maneuver due to all the people out walking around, but eventually, I found some parking relatively close to the pub. The seating seems a little limited for lunch time and the menu is extremely limited. You can order a burger from your table, otherwise, you have to walk over to their carver section and order your own sandwich to bring back to the table? Interesting...? Needless to say, we tried the burger, which I found to be rather tasty. They cooked it well and it wasn't dead. It actually was juicy and very flavorful. The service was fairly efficient, and, well, the place was "bar" clean. This looks like it would be a great place to hang out during the late hours when you are knocking back some adult beverages, but if you are looking for a good lunch menu with some variety, this really isn't the place for you.
Food:
We shared some wings and for myself I ordered the chicken pot pie. To my surprise was the wings were above average and my pie was excellent. I would say in that immediate area its one of the better places to eat.
Scene:
Lots of suits and girls looking to date suits. I would say there a a good bit of the epitome 'wall street d-bag' types too unfortunately (I put myself in the 'suit' category) -- but hey that comes with the territory for most of the bars downtown. The music is excessively loud, but tolerable in the 'dining' side of the bar. Overall I would say its a pretty good experience, but I would say its better to just eat/drink outside out on Stone over going inside when the climate is right.
If you're looking for a good time downtown, hit up Ulysses, great food, nice people, great bar, amazing music!
I cannot believe I worked downtown for 3 years and not once went to Ulysses! NOT ONCE...so embarrasing :( If you work in the downtown area, Ulysses is a MUST!
This should be obvious, but everyone that goes to Ulysses is from Wall Street (suits!). I came here on a Wednesday, and it was packed, as I'm sure it is every other night of the week. I would describe Ulysses as the watering hole for all downtowners, and I really enjoyed that it's set up with picnic tables on the outside like a beer garden. Prices are decent, bar is decent, it's everything you need to drink the night away after a hard day at work.
I will definitely come back in the summer, and look forward to more adventures here...I definitely had a good time!
Great Food the steak bites with horseradish is a huge appetizer we both wish we hadnt gotten dinner too!
It was November 10th and we were able to eat outside and it was a great atmosphere.
Last night I came here to watch a UK artist called Nick Harper, as always the service was friendly and the food was plentiful and tasty (normal pub fare). The Sunday night shows are $10 and start around 9pm, $10 seems a bit pricey you might think....but it includes one drink, any drink! The stage is in plain view for all and the artists are very accessible, we had CD's signed and chatted after the show and everyone was very happy.
Nick ended up playing a few songs with Glenn Tillbrook (squeeze) and rocking past midnight.
A wonderful unique night, amazing. Watch out for Oyster Festival coming up in late September - another amazing night of food, beer and music.
This is a clear three star brunch. Why am I giving it two then you ask?..
It's because the only reason you should go here is because of the summer (stone street) brunch special, and yet they have the WORST COFFEE I'VE EVER TASTED. I'm not being difficult, it was not edible...or liquid.
When I asked our server for a fresh cup, as if to suggest that perhaps this was some horrible fluke, we both exchanged glances for a few beats. Inaudible to those around us, she looked deep into my eyes as if to tell me "that's the best it gets". "Don't worry." I gazed back, "things will get better soon." Our beautiful moment ended, she took the cup back, and with contrition, off the bill.
Maybe you don't care because for $20 you get a cocktail too, but if, in the end, you like coffee with brunch as I do, then you ought to prepare yourself for some scrotumtightening.
Standard Irish-American fare and some of the options have a new age twist. I personally hate lobster but LOVE their lobster roll. I am also a fan of their sliders and they have a great beer selection.
Alright, except when all the Goldman Sachs blue-shirts are taking over. The beers and the pub food is pretty good on a weekend too! Clarence even gets a few digits from pretty lasses every week!
Look for me there...Clarence is usually double-fisting, except on Wednesday and Thursdays when the blue shirts try to take over my turf....that's when Clarence goes into stealth mode and goes to his other secret pub.
Ulysses is the reason living in FiDi doesn't totally suck. It is consistently fun and unpretentious, open late every night and yet again for brunch the next day. My Brooklyn and uptown friends don't mind cabbing to and from here either and it makes a great end of the night spot.
If you happen to find yourself in the Financial District one day and you stumble upon Ulysses right after work hours, you will discover yourself in the mecca of the FiDi financiers. Mostly males who shed their coats but keep their ties on, this pub is crawling with guys either trying to forget about the numbers they crunched throughout the day or those who are fresh Wall Street men still excited about their careers. Either way, most of the dudes are friendly and are there to have a good time. Kick back and relax with some decent priced happy hour beers, and you'll have yourself a Folk ball.
Hope this place never closes!
The first time I went to Ulysses was to see Shilelagh Law play. The place was absolutely jam packed and you couldn't move. Luckily we had a few friends who got there super early and reserved an area near the bar, otherwise we would have never gotten a drink! The music was awesome and from what I understand they have bands play often.
I recently went a few weeks ago after work and we had some food and drinks and it wasn't too crowded at all.. just enough people do it wasn't dead. There were a lot of people sitting outside on benches, so that was nice too. It seems like one of the more lively places to hangout downtown.
I never pay attend about the beers and food because I was looking at the all the hot ladies sitting around us... Just too many of them.
The food is average and please don't order any wings. The beer is over price because of the location. You definitely can find better location at nearby Seaport with cheaper price. However, just for the fun and the look at hot ladies at the summer time. It is OK at the end.
Weekend Brunch-
It's a neighborhood spot for brunch. it's eggs or pancakes, or sandwiches- and NO EGG WHITES (which you can tell I'm not happy about).
Great if you are on a clean diet and have food restrictions (looses point for not having egg whites)
Totally different feel from the week days.
Oh, Financial District happy hour. Ulysses is one of the more popular after-work destinations in the area because it's cheap and spacious. There's always space to put down all of our heavy bags and sit/stand to have a drink. After happy hour, it's not so cheap anymore (vodka sodas will set you back $8). I'm not a fan of the crowd though. There are only so many cheesy pick-up lines from random guys one can handle. Persistence will not be rewarded, either.
Pearl Street marks the original eastern shoreline of the lower part of Manhattan; extensive use of landfill over the course of several hundred years has extended the shoreline roughly 700-900 feet further into the East River. In the summer, Pearl St. becomes a fun street bar, which encompasses Ulysses', Bayard's, Financier Patisserie (great pastries!), and Harry's Steak and Cafe. The pub receives good reviews for its sliders and brunch. The best part though, is grabbing a drink outdoors and overhearing a stock broker whine about his diminished bonus.

The review is for their $20 sunday brunch. (The bar itself is pretty mediocre to me.) I came for their brunch a few months ago and returned this past sunday. Had a much better time because the weather was good and the outdoor seating area was open. This is a brunch spot you will want to go to if you like to eat raw oysters and clams. IMO, beats going to their annual oyster festival because 1) it's all you can eat for $20 and 2) their oyster festival is usually unbelievably crowded. The rest of the food is pretty decent, ranging from a corned beef carving area to an omelette station. The brunch also comes with a free brunch cocktail and a dessert section with some of Financier Patisserie's awesome desserts.
I just came here for drinks so I didn't get the full feel of the place. They had a DJ playing music that some people were dancing to but most were just hanging out and chatting. The music was a bit too loud to have a decent conversation and for some reason the music got louder with the start of each song.
I don't know if this is a US thing but the drinks were cheap and heavy. I watched as the bartender poured my drink and half the glass was alcohol and the rest was mixer. You would NEVER get that in Toronto (they have a spout that measures exactly 1 oz, maybe less).
But seriously for 10 drinks the total came to about $70, which is REALLY good.
I would've had an even better time if this random fat guy didn't sit on the back of my stool and tried to push me off, I was there way before him and he has the nerve to plop his fat ass on half of my seat and then proceed to "grind" it all over my back to get me off. This dude is definitely a winner.
First of all getting here was a biatch because the wrong address was listed, I'm pretty sure it's 195 not 95, but whatever.
I finally found the place, and just like Krysta wrote, it was dead. Good for us though, because the bartender was really attentive. There definitely weren't any happy hour specials, each vodka sprite cost $7.50 with well vodka. The cosmos were really good though.
I wouldn't come back because this place was super lame. I gave it three stars instead of two because the music was hood and at least I didn't have to wait for my drinks, which is a major plus when attempting to get extremely wasted, fast.
I don't spend a whole lot of time on Wall Street but whenever I do it feels like a foreign land. One with narrow corridors flanked by buildings the size of California redwoods where sun doesn't shine, the grid system is a distant memory, the dress code is "suit" and the bars and restaurants don't even pretend to be good.
So when a friend from out of town suggested I meet him at Ulysses I was less than pumped. Weaving my way through the streets I came upon the typical big, dark, empty Irish pub but knowing that my friends we're "outside" I opened the bright back door to find a mini concrete playground beer garden in the back alley. We sat at big picnic tables and downed some benign American beers from a large bath-sized tin bucket...this thing was huge and must've held at least a case of beer. My bloody mary was actually pretty decent (not the gross disappointment I've had at some hipper hotspots) and when the food started coming it was actually decent as well. It's pub/bar food and I'd say it's airport-style overpriced for what you get ($11 for a plate of wings?). The pigs in a blanket were good but the dough was really ... flaky and mixed with the oily sausage, got kind of messy. Still tasty enough though not a winner...and why the salad? Nobody who orders pigs in a blanket is going to eat the lettuce on the side..but whatever.
All in all a nice place to relax outside on a hot summer day. Lots of douchey finance types making misogynistic comments loudly to each other to mask their small endowment and pea-sized brains. So moral of the story, go with a big crowd of people you like and get ready to cough up dough for overpriced drinks & food. Still, the atmosphere on the patio here is better than anything else I've seen in this 'hood.
****3.5*****
So Ulysses is where I come when:
a) my vendor wants to take a bunch of us out
b) someone is leaving my company and we're hoisting a few in farewell
c) I want to have something from a carving station
I like their carving station because they don't have the same thing all the time. Like for example, today I had the sesame encrusted tuna steak and previously I've had roasted chicken (not on the menu today). They have kick-ass Mac 'n' Cheese, but their fries leave much to be desired. I had the fries today and well, not their best feature on the menu.
It's pricey, but then again, so are all the places down in the FiDi.
It's a solid, go-to place for lunch when you want to do something a little different, but are not interested in wandering too far outside your comfort zone.
p.s.
Pretty good burgers too!
Ladies if you want to meet stockbrokers, guys who get coffees for stockbrokers, and guys that are good at pretending to be stockbrokers this is the place to visit. Always crowded and a seemingly good time, music ranges from top 40 to a few of the old throw back Bon Jovi hits and what not. This is certainly no meat market type of place, so guys be prepared to meet a ton of single girls who are waiting for men to approach them and say they have any kind of job in the financial district, and double bonus points if you get the girl to believe you are a CEO of anything.
The drinks are tasty. Not ultra expensive but normal for a bar in that area. Stone street is always going to be a good time espcially on nice days. The menu is extensive for a bar... I enjoyed the buffalo wings and cheeseburger sliders but my favorite was the pork sliders... yummy. Many people around me had stuff that would seem quite strange to have at a bar like ravioli and salmon but I'm not going to knock it til I try it... if that ever happens...
Had an amazing steak burger and pint of guiness here.
Everyone there is pretty business looking (it is in the financial district afterall) but you don't feel out of place.
I believe it was open till 4am.
You feel like you're in a scene from Big Daddy when you're there.
I have no clue why.
If you are looking for a chill spot with a significant amount if beers on tap and you work near or around wall street- this is the place to go for after work drinks or during work drinks (during lay off or as I like to call it snipping season).
It's conviently located on stone street, has outdoor and indoor seating a full bar and during lunch time they have the carving blk which is self serve specials of the day usually sandwiches, some fish dish, and a beef choice... I've never had lunch there cuz I'm always there for their liquid meals ; ) but from what I see and hear it is quite delish and reasonably priced average 12-17 bucks for entrée plus 2 sides.
If u do sit outside , it's bench seating and be forewarned the benches are not toys during drunken times I learned this the hard way and have bruises to prove it ...
Waitresses are awesome there, super friendly and offer free beer to u when they see u have fallen off your bench for the 3rd time and spilled your beer all over the floor.
Great for happy hour! Also it seems milfs and golddiggers frequent this place cuz a lot of wall street folk come here so do not be alarmed when u see 45 yr old milfs in tight minis!
After Shakespeare in Battery Park, my friend and I hit Ulysses for LATE NIGHT DINNER around 9:30PM. We sat outside at one of many tables set up on the street in the warm July air. The restaurant had a great vibe and was crowded, mostly with people having DRINKS after work.
I ordered the turkey burger which was both filling and delicious. The food came QUICKLY and the service was good.
The prices are REASONABLE with my burger setting me back only ten dollars. I'd recommend it for after hours drinks or dinner, but would emphasize the delight of sitting OUTSIDE over the dark, loud interior.
I went here for lunch with my wall street buddies and it wasn't that great. Ok so let me just tell you how it works so you don't sit there like an idiot like me or if you don't read that blurb on top of the menu explaining how to order.
If you want the entrees or the sides listed on there, you go to this other room and they serve it to you, like a lunch line. But, if you're ordering a burger, then the waitress takes your order. We didn't know that so we sat there like dorks...soo uncool. The waitress came after 10 minutes to explain to us what to do. But, for those of us waiting to order burgers, it took 10 minutes to be served...not cool. The waitress was friendly though.
So the burger I ordered was alright, kind of too big. The pulled pork sandwich was a bit dry. BUT, the fries are really really really good!!
We basically picked this place b/c the other restaurants were packed.
One of the few, (m-w the only!) late spots in town~
Ulysses is a valuable asset to anyone living below chambers.
However, the service is stuffy (the whole "actor-waiter/ess", "I'm doing YOU a favor" vibe)..
The crowd is 80% wankers and diggers (turns ferry-spill-over and b&t on weekends)..
and the food is just so-so.. more like a "hit or miss" menu..
There is much better food to be had on Stone Street and in the area (Harry's right next door for one!)..
but the Monday Lobster night can't be beat.. the drink (ie:beer) selection is above average.. the live music and other themed nights and course, the late hours, make it the official public house for the neighborhood..
Like it's sister spot Puck Fair, it does also have a nice atmosphere inside.. and the bar dividers are very cool for when you're at the bar but not wanting to make friends (on dates, serious or biz talks over beer, etc.)
I am a regular.. particularly late night when the work crowd heads home.. so I can't hit it too hard.. but I am often leaving wishing that there were better late-night options around..
Either way, residents of 10006, I must recommend this place~
BRUNCH --- SUNDAY BRUNCH!!! Best deal in the area for $20 bucks---all u can chow!!! Carving is good, oysters, salmon, fruit----the whole deal!!
Around 1ish, it gets crowded and standing in a buffet style line is not fun.
Tables outside too!!
Dinner is simple---the place is LOUD!!
Its got something for everyone!!
I became a big fan of Ulysses' fairly quickly as it is probably only one of the decent spots to grab some food and drinks in the area.
Heck, last time I was there this 50 year old woman that was behind me at the bar started to rub my back because we weren't "paying attention" to her... can't beat that experience.
It is pretty spacious in the inside which allows you to bring a decent amount of friends with you not having to worry where everyone is going to sit. When it starts to get nice out "spring time" there is sitting right outside on Stone Street which has a pretty chill environment.
The food is pretty good and I don't really have any complaints against it. Last time I was there I ordered the fish ( i think haddock) and I probably wouldn't recommend ordering that. If you order a burger, wrap or sandwich you most likely won't be disappointed.
Some of the business people that frequent the bar can be somewhat snobbish but that is to be expected with the surrounding area, but some of the 45-50 year old dudes need to stop thinking they have old-man strength.
The bartenders are friendly and take notice quickly if you need a refill on your drink, Keith knows what he's doing behind the bar.
After a few more visits I'm upgrading this place. Like I said in my previous review the lunch buffet was horrible, but the burgers are good.
But in reality this place is more bar than restaurant and as that where it shines. The atmosphere is really cool, the bartenders are also cool. Downside is it can get pretty packed. I would also like to see a wider beer selection.

Ahh, Ulysses. I have fond memories of drunken shenanigans at this fine establishment. Otherwise known as "land of the blue shirts" (trust me, when you go there, you'll know why), this sometimes overcrowded pub is really good for happy hour.
They open up tables on Stone Street when the weather gets warm, which is really nice. Try to reserve a spot ahead of time if you plan to go with a large crew.
They probably have some of the best sliders I've had at a bar (or maybe I've just had too many beers to think otherwise). Watch out-the waitresses are a little bitchy, especially with rowdy crews.
Wings: Beat
Beer: kind of expensive
Decor: not that bad, nice outside seating and good-sized booths inside
Crowd: tourists, Wall Street types, and Wall Street type tourists
Waitresses: Busted
Skate Spots Nearby: CLUTCH.
Was skating downtown, stopped in here to get wasted, and then went and skated some more. They have 'Lobster Mondays' that I'm trying to find someone to go to with. I'd definitely return to this place just for the drinks since it's so far removed from anything I'd normally do [read: people I'd normally see].
I don't think they actually serve from the bar. Stood there for a solid five minutes with no result; was the only person standing there. Not really sure what that's about. Don't let the three stars turn you off; I would very much recommend this place for day drinking. Might return for late night just to 'see what it's like.'
Not too crazy about the food, especially the lunch time menu. The burgers that you order at the bar are pretty good, but their buffet style lunch is gross.
This place is absolutely insane during the summer. It opens up the outdoor seating on Stone St. and it's jam packed. This is a cool bar to see and be seen. The bartenders are cool and the drinks are STRONG.
Interesting scene, nice beer selection on tap, on my last visit they had a live band there which was a plus as well -- didn't have a chance to try the food but it all looked pretty good
This place is cute... but it can get a bit crowded on some nights. it's a place that is crawling with people in suits attached with fancy-schmancy job titles. The dudes tend to hit on anything walking in heels and there are definitely some gold-diggers that i spotted at this place. These ladies are willing to show some leg or boob-age action to score some free drinks.
There's a recession going on and all these ladies think about is themselves! And guys-- just because a girl bats her eye at you... that is not a sign for you to go liquor her up! i don't know what happened to a simple hello follow along with a normal conversation rather than.. "hey there good looking, can i buy you a drink/another drink?"
This won't work for the following reasons:
1. cheesy lines make you look stupid
2. the offer to buy a drink is nice, but you don't want her first memory of you as "the guy who tried to get me good and wasted."
3. if a girl would rather have a free drink instead of having a nice conversation.. it's not worth buying her a drink!
i've seen countless number of guys fail at this technique... you get the girl to say OK to the drink and then you eventually find yourself walking back to your buddies and go, "she was hot, but i don't know where she went?"
ANYWAYS, the food is yummy and the drinks are well made, but it comes at a price. it's a fun place to chill with coworkers/friends. And we need as much fun as we can get these days... good food with some drinks makes it easier to convince yourself that the 2nd Depression isn't happening.
