The store is very well organized, clean, and it has many many products however the staff is not the most knowledgeable.
When I asked for a recommendation for certain make up, the associates never know what to offer and don't seem like they know the products very well.
The place is great if you go in there knowing what you want to buy and you go in to buy it otherwise forget it, you might as well go to Walgreen's!

Been in here three times, and the one thing I do like is the reward system because my moisturizer is pricey and I get a pretty hefty reward for it.... which is nice.

I will return again but I will keep my questions to my self.

I haven't spent much time an any Ulta largely because there isn't one very close to me and I usually shop online or at Sephora for my beauty needs.  But, this really is a nicely stocked, clean store.

The staff I encountered during the visit was friendly & helpful, so in reading previous reviews about snotty staff, perhaps they have gotten rid of them or they left.  Good, who wants their shopping experience ruined by grumpy staffers!!

Ulta carries a wide variety of high end and drug store brands in make-up, hair products and body products.  They also have a large selection of perfume and offer lots of perfume/lotion/shower gel gift packs which are nice for gift giving.  I also noticed they carry Philosophy and Bliss which are great bath products!  In terms of salon quality hair products, there was Pureology, Matrix, Paul Mitchell, Nexxus, Redken, Rusk, Ojon and others.  On the flip side, they also sell the drugstore lines like Pantene, so you're covered no matter what you use.

There are a lot of stylish cosmetic bags, hair accessories, brushes, styling tools and more.

I also like they offer coupons (in magazines and newspaper inserts) and discounts as well as a rewards program you can sign up for.

There is a salon in the back of the store as well, which I have never used.

I did notice however, that there were a fair number of misplaced or missing testers on some of the items which is always frustrating.  I wish they would try to keep testers more organized, stocked where they belong and clean.

If I get coupon specials, sales or have an exclusive item I want I would return, as well as if I'm in the area and need a product.

After visiting an Ulta in The River shopping center in Palm Springs, CA, I was really excited when the Ulta opened up in The Plant shopping center off of Curtner in San Jose. Mainly because the one in Palm Springs is huge, arranged well, and always very well kept with friendly informed staff. I thought this is a perfect alternative to Sephora. However the San Jose store leaves a lot to be desired and is definitely no substitute for Sephora.

The staff at this location hasn't been helpful and those that are on the floor that are supposed to assist with questions, most of the time know absolutely nothing about the products they are attempting to sell you on. They also seem very put off when you approach the counter to inquire about the location of something.

After visiting the store a few times I am still really disappointed. Their perfume array is always a mess - sample bottles missing or not with their perfumes or they are out of stock. It just seems that it isn't organized very well. They do always have plenty of perfume/cologne gift sets throughout the year.

The department store brand cosmetics area is a wreck as well. Again often times missing the samples of makeup and even the brushes. I have seen more empty packing in this area of the store than anywhere else! I wonder what the Loss Prevention staff thinks in that store, if they don't have any they need to get some.

I do like the fact that they have a large selection of makeup available both drug store brand as well as department store brand. They do have a large selection of hair tools and other misc. bath products. They have their own salon in the store which never seems to have staff or customers in it.

I would say approach with caution or find someplace else to do your beauty needs shopping.

I was really glad to see after reading the other reviews that I am not the only person who's had bad experiences here.....

Ug! Stay away from this place. Employees are the rudest I've ever encountered. Store isn't all that clean. So many items either out of stock or that they don't carry. I'll pay the extra and go to Sephora.

I left Ulta yesterday and literally the first thing on my mind was "did I give it a full 5 stars? I better check."

Well I did, but I'll do it again. I really like coming here. I always come out with exactly what I needed, and then some. I came in to get my Level 3 Rewards gift yesterday and happily picked up a 16.9fl oz Paul Mitchell shampoo. Yeyuh!

I think they have a lot of sales and great prices on things, regardless of the College Day promotion or whatever; I could never make it there on a Tuesday anyway. Yesterday, I was stocked up with free samples at checkout and with coupons and stuff spent less than $10 on over $35 worth of product. How can you go wrong with that?

I used to absolutely love Ulta. I've shopped at many different Ulta stores in many different states. This Ulta is the bottom-of-the-barrel worst Ulta I've ever been in and between my issues with this store and with the company policies in general I will never shop at any Ulta again.

When I moved to CA last fall one of my first stops was this Ulta. The problems started pretty much as soon as I walked in the door...:

01] Every employee acted as if my entering the store just ruined their entire day. There were plenty of customers in the store, but all the employees were huddled in little groups talking to each other.

02] When I asked where the brand I was looking for was located the girl acted as if I was the dumbest person on the planet, laughed and just pointed toward the back of the store.

03] When I went to pay for my items I handed over my key chain plastic fob card that I had been using for three years in NC. The cashier threw my key chain down on the counter and snottily said that my card doesn't work in CA and that I would have to sign up for the CA points program. Which of course doesn't carry over all the points I had on my other card and doesn't even have a key chain fob option.

04] Another cashier behind the counter, who was quite overweight and not doing anything other than blabbing on with gossip, laughed when the other cashier threw down my key chain and actually muttered, "Skinny bitch." under her breath maybe thinking that I couldn't hear her. Well, this skinny bitch has pretty decent hearing.

Fast forward a few months and I decided to give this Ulta another chance. I figured the last time had to be an off day. Nope.

01] Again, no employees were friendly in the slightest. One actually yelled at me to get out of her way as she carried a couple bottles of shampoo or something.

02] When I couldn't find a product I was looking for and made the mistake of asking an employee if they were just out of stock or if they had stopped carrying it the reply was, "How am I supposed to know?"

03] The cashier gave me a hassle about taking my catalog coupon because it was bent. Yes, I committed some unknown sin of cutting the coupon out of the catalog, putting it my wallet and letting it bend.

At this point I had pretty much decided to write off this store and this company. I found the products I need online and figured I'd eat the shipping costs to not have to deal with the lovely staff at Ulta. But with money being tight I figured I'd call the store and at least see how much of a price difference there was. The employee quoted me a price that was $15 less than the cost of the product online. I asked her three times if she was sure it was the same product and she said yes. So I went to the store only to find that she gave me the price of a similar product on the same shelf.

Good bye Ulta!

After doing a walk through it hit me...this is the Poor Man's Sephora. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I am an equal opportunity beauty product enthusiast.
When I have to, I will go to Sephora for my Philosophy, etc and random birthday gifts. Otherwise I now know about Ulta and how they have discount racks all over, which can give it that dollar store feel, but I'm all about saving money. So I'm not trippen!!

I am basing this review on the salon only.  I wanted a hair cut and didn't feel like going to a fancy salon where everyone looks down on you, and I thought hmmm Ulta has a salon, why not try that?

Called the night before and got an appointment the next day, which was great not having to book two weeks out. Showed up at my appointment time and got right in. The stylist Christy (may have spelled it wrong) was excellent! Listened to what I wanted done offered some tips and ultimately did exactly what I wanted.

The salon is in  the back of the store and you can watch the shoppers or talk to the stylists as they chairs are right next to each other.

I will most definitely be back for my hair needs. A great and painless experience. =D

So-so salon, cosmetics, and unprofessional associates.

I was so pissed that I read about the Umbrella Salon promotion after I had my hair done here. I didn't feel that my hair was completely rinsed of product and that the cutting was too blunt along the edges, especially my bangs. Plus, the cut was a bit on the short side and though I asked for feathering, it was more like layering (which does have great shape). Eh, I'll stick to $55+ cuts from now on. Their regular $45 cut isn't worth the steep price.

Other than that, I only go here for two purposes: to find a product that may not be available elsewhere or to take advantage of sales of higher end products (e.g. Stila). The sales associates are pretty dumb and not very clued in about the products, but they keep out of the way (purposely) so I just do my own thing.

Ulta is just great. Very similar to Sephora, but better or worse in different ways.

Ulta has cheaper stuff and i'm all for that, especially because it's just around the block from my place and not as hectic as sephora!

they have probably everything you could imagine beauty care wise here. the employees are also very helpful and nice.

except for when two different people told me they didnt have something that did! i found it on my own...

Never EVER will I shop here again!!
I shopped here since they opened and have had several bad experiences. With each one I brushed it off my shoulder thinking it won't be like that next time and with my last incident, that was the last straw!

I'm part of their Ulta club or whatever they call it, I have the card and get the catalogs. I had a 20% coupon off 1 item and I had a $5 coupon I got from my Allure magazine.  I came in for some hair spray, a brush and some ban de soleil. I wanted to ring up my items separately so I can take advantage of the two coupons.  So I asked the girl at the register if she can ring my items up separately. She said she couldn't use both coupons even on 2 separate transactions. I said that is pointless, whats the difference if I walked out and came back in an hour or 2. I wanted to talk to the manager so she sent Leslie over...eh...total example of unprofessional manager! She was waaay more rude and her answer to that was "We will be here and I won't let you use that". Eh...rude!

Ok now here is the wrong part just in case y'all thought I was cheap...I wanted to use the 20% coupon on the ban de soleil...it was only $7 and the 20% would have been $1.40!! So she was acting like that over $1.40!!! I called their corporate office and complained.

My sister also had a bad experience too. Her fiance's son who is 6 had to go pee bad and wanted to go to the bathroom there and all the workers didn't want them to use their restroom. They tried sending them to Starbucks or Ross...Whats up with that?! Everyone who has been around little kids knows what little warning they give you when they have to pee.

I am kicking myself for not getting the name or the awesome sales girl who helped me today.  She was the best.  She told me not to purchase a few select things in my hand because they went on sale Sunday, and on top of that, I asked for something totally off the wall ( A nail file with a case) and she went and searched one out for me.

I hope when I go back she is there.  Her opinions were valid and her help was over the top.

You can not what so ever compare Ulta with Sephora. Well you can.. they both carry high end perfumes, name brand make up and a thorough skin care line. ULTA has an additional (almost looking like a regular pharmacy make up isle) area that sells generic hair dyes, sun glasses, shampoos/conditioners etc..

Ulta would be like if a longs drug store (make up area) and Sephora had a kid..

The only reason why I don't see myself spending too much time in Ulta is because it looks a little trashy. Hair clips were everywhere. Things were lying on the floor. Dusty shampoo bottles which have been sitting there obviously for awhile. Sunglasses were not organized and seemed very cheap. I wasn't really looking for anything specific but I was never asked by any of the employees who would constantly walk by if I needed help.

The store reeked of ammonia because there is a little hair salon right in the back of Ulta.. A lady getting highlights was walking around the store while the color set. It smelled.

Anything you find at ulta you could find at any target or sephora but in a more organized and customer service friendly environment.

I am not basing this review on my hiardresser Vicente who is amazing at cutting my hair but soley on the staff who work the front counter.

Never have I experienced worse service than I did a few weeks ago. The girl in the front took my receipt scanned the bar code and charged me for my hair cut all without saying a damn word to me. She would have much rather twirled her curled hair in her fingers and pick dirt out of her nails than give me the time of day.

Oh yeah and when i told her that I didn't have my Ulta Club Card with me she let out this huge sigh because she had to DO HER JOB and look me up. With no luck she told me "Come back when you find your card"

Done. Handed me my recipt and called it a day.

This place needs some hardcore training on how to treat returning customers if they want to keep running a business.

My friend said "it's like a candy store for girls." and I think that he was pretty much right, all those make up fanatics out there.

Ulta has everything you could find at the mall but without having to go to the mall! They have all the designer make up that they carry at Sephora, Macys, Nordstroms, including hair products, hair stylers, etc etc, they have it all! What I really like is that they carry Dermalogica face products which are usually only found at selected Spas.

Prices for the designer brand things are the same as every where else, but their generic brand make up is a bit pricier than you would find at Target across the parking lot. They're always having deals going on at Ulta so make sure to check often, or sign up for their mailing list and they'll send you a bunch of coupons home!

I checked this place out for the first time last week. I came on a weekday and the place was empty...it was just me and the few sales associates.

The store is huge and they have a wide selection of cosmetic brands and great prices. They also have ads in the paper with 20% off coupons and such(reason I came here in the first place).

My only complaint is the customer service.

I was expecting something similar to Sephora but it's a bit different. It is a larger store with a wider selection and they carry drug store brands also, not only the expensive brand names. Which is awesome since you can come in and get your hair color, products, tools and make up. But their 'premier' selection of make up really lacks, I rather get my make up at Sephora or Macy's since its closer anyways. However, their rewards program looks a lot better than Sephora's since you get Ulta bucks after spending a certain amount. And they have a sale section :)

But customer service is horrible, I came in looking for new eyeliner but I couldn't find anyone to help me, boo. Not even a since hello, even the staff at the registers were cold and I didn't get any samples either :( Hm, its a stop if I'm in the area but I rather go back to the usual Sephora...

Four stars alone for stocking my favorite sun products.  I've never seen this stuff on the mainland before so happy doesn't even describe how I felt when I saw it this morning!

Just a few blocks off 87 in center called The Plant.  I didn't bother to look at the other stores in the center, but did notice a Target, Ross and right next door to Ulta was an Off Fifth shoe store.  Looks JUST like DSW and unfortunately I wasn't impressed with their selection (much like DSW).

I didn't wander around all that much, but I'll go back and really check out the goods.

I went here a little before Christmas because of a $10 off coupon they had. I used it and the ladies that worked there even showed me more deals. As in buy one and get one free.

The thing about this place is that I love their selection. They have everything from high end to generic brands. They had this eyebrow pencil I love from Walgreen's, yet had some items that I could get at Sephora.

Overall my shopping experience was good.

After having this in my bookmarks for more than a few months, I decided it was time to give this place a visit.

So, on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I took a quick trip here to see what the fuss was all about.

Walking in, I was pleasantly greeted and they were really nice to ask to hold my dripping umbrella for me while I shopped.

Then I started looking around. The store is huge! Lots of great makeup everywhere from drugstore brands to some of the more high-end stuff. There were things I wanted but they were sold out in. It was nice to wander around and look at the stuff they have but after the associated greeted me, I didn't get any service whatsoever.

Sadly, there were things I was interested in but the sales associates near me were just standing around, gossiping and talking about the concert they were going to that night.

Bad customer service turns me off. If I need something, I'll either get it from my local drugstore or at Sephora, where they don't give me a strange look for getting my own umbrella near the registers.

Oh Ulta, how I loathe you..

I had never been to an Ulta before but read about it in magazines so I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into.  This Ulta is located at The Plant in San Jose.  It is really close to my work which sucks because I can see myself spending loads of money here!  Ulta is a high end drugstore.  They carry cheap products like Covergirl and Maybelline but also expensive products like Pureology and Dermalogica.  There is something for everyone here!  They have everything from makeup to perfume to body wash to lotion to shampoo to conditioner to flat irons to skincare to a salon.  Yes, there is a salon up in here!  I also love that the employees who work here are super helpful and friendly!  I could spend hours upon hours here just looking at and smelling stuff.. Ulta is the ultimate beauty store!

I've reconsidered my experience and time spent with this store. I'm raising it to 3 stars (from the original 2) because you can great some pretty great deals here.

I think my first visit - and awful first impression - was a fluke. I have never again seen that awful sales girl and while I don't get the same warm "Hi, how are you, do you need a basket" (x20) routine like I do at Sephora, that's okay. I appreciate being able to shop in peace. There's someone around if I need help, but normally, I don't.

I try to reserve my Ulta shopping for my drugstore basics. Why don't I just do to Target, do you ask? Because you can get a better deal at Ulta. For example, I use many a Neutrogena products. My eye cream is $12.99 regular retail price. On sale at Target, I can buy it for $10.99. OR...I can buy it on sale at Ulta for $10.40, PLUS I can use my $3.50 off of a $10 purchase coupon. Sometimes, I've even had a $5 off a $10 purchase coupon. Every little cent saved helps. It's true that I can't buy everything I need at Ulta and yes, it would seem counter-productive to then have to drive (wasting gas, money and time) to Target for the rest of my items, but lucky for me, the two stores are in the same shopping center.

The other things that keeps me coming back is that Ulta offers really great sales on nail polishes. I'm an OPI girl and they usually have a great Buy 2, Get 1 Free promo. Plus, they're always throwing little incentives like free mini nail polishes or free top coat or the like.

Ulta offers a lot of other great deals (especially on liter salon shampoos and conditioners) from what I've seen, so for those who use those products, it would be worth a trip. You can see Ulta's current sales advertisement by visiting their website and downloading the ad.

I don't write many reviews on Yelp because I just don't have the time. However, if I find a place that doesn't have one million useless reviews I may just Yelp it.

Ulta is a one stop beauty cosmetic shop minus the fact that they don't carry Chanel cosmetics  = my staple.

+ 1: Far, far, far away from the mall. I dislike malls. Passionately dislike.

+ 1: Close to home & work. I am a fan of multitasking on my lunch hour.

+ 1: Ulta stocks my holy grail Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Face & Body Polish which SEPHORA never stocks anymore. Thank you!

+ 1: Buy 2 OPI nail polishes get 1 free. I had enough willpower to only purchase one today as I probably have more OPI polish then any nail salon. *My pedicures = perfection*

+ 1: They stock Pureology & Joico hair care products.

+ 1: No hassle, friendly employees.

Now this is what you call the "Home Depot" of Cosmetic stores!!!

Grab a couple girlfriends and head here when you have nothing to do. It's too bad I'm a crazed make up junkie. You name it, I've tried it or read up on it. I will do some major damage if I am not on a time limit.

It also doesn't help that my bff is a product addict and also has tons of makeup and skin care guinea pig experience. We tricked our boys into taking a peek in here with us and we lost them for an hour. Well, they lost us. haha.

I noticed some bad reviews on service, but I'm the type who doesn't like to be bothered when I shop for make up. I know how to apply and buy. No need for a pesky sales girl to follow me around and give me tips.

This place is fun. It's just basically the cosmetic/beauty supply part of your standard drugstore but nice and neat. I could actually go and pick up an item without it having been violated due to the lack of testers. I hate it when I find a lipstick only to have a fingernail mark or a blur at the shiny tip of the the stick.

Then they have this huge array of brushes, combs and hair appliances. Then on the other side of the store is the higher end cosmetics and products. Not a huge selection though, nothing like Sephora but enough so that it's not overwhelming.

I needed assistance and the gal was 'ok', she looked at me as if I was a child who kept tugging at her skirt and then mulled over my request as if it was an option if she was going to help me or not. Then I was making my purchase and the cashier asked if I had a rewards card, I told her I did it on-line and so she asked me for the print out. Yeah, I always carry copies of my 8 1/2 x 11 Ulta print out with me. So she says 'What's your number?' I told her I didn't know my number ( I thought she was referring to the rewards card number), then she sighs and says 'No, your PHONE number'. Needless to say, she was put out for doing her job.

The place is fun to go to but them bitches need be happy they even have a job...and don't forget to go to that shoe warehouse next door, it's huge and they have a nice clean bathroom in the back.

I made an appointment to get my hair cut the day after my birthday.  I sat in traffic for 30 minutes to find that I was running late.  I pulled over and called in; my appointment had already been given away to a walk-in, and I was told that I couldn't be accomodated that night.  I understand that shit happens, but that really sucks after that drive.

The time before last, the stylist spoke poorly of other customers right in front of me (I really hate this; I understand everyone does this but have the class to do it away from the current customers), and she didn't do a great job on my color, either.

I'd rather not go back.

This store rocks when it comes to merchandise selection. They seem to have just about everything :)

However, like others have mentioned, the customer service is just awful. Every time I come in, the place is fairly empty (weekdays in the afternoon for example). It's not like the associates have too much to do. They usually seem annoyed or busy chatting it up. Not that all this bothers me, this is just an FYI.

The one time their service pissed me off, however, was when I was at the cash register (probably the only person in the store), but the girl ringing me up didn't for one second look at me or say a word to me. She just blabbed blabber blabbed away with her coworker. "Like OMG." That is just plain rude!

That aside, they have tons of stuff and great sales!

What a disappointment! The staff are snotty! Their noses almost touched the ceiling! I was shopping on "Black Friday", and so I was completely bummed out in sweats and I swear did you really had to look at me up and down? WTF!

I came across 3 staff, very unhelpful staff.  I asked the girl at the register if they had anymore of the Ed Hardy perfume, I didn't see any where the Ed Hardy things were and she was like yes, third row down. Uh... I just came from there and you didn't have any there or else I wouldn't be asking (thinking to myself). So screw it, I wont be coming back. My money is definitely going to Sephora!

They carry a good variety of drugstore brands and higher end brands. As for customer service, don't expect too much or any at all.

I scheduled a make-up appointment here for a special occasion and the girl I had did an outstanding job. $30 for a make-up session (and that includes the make-up) isn't bad at all considering some cosmetics counters request that you buy 2 of their items blah blah blah or something of that sort just to get your make-up done.

My Opinion/Story:
Sometimes you can get a great deal at this place but most of the time they're just a bit expensive.  I've recently been introduced to good makeup so when Ulta opened, I decided to check them out.  They have lots of selections and the place is nice and clean.  They have some good deals every now and then.  I've done their facials and had a make over.  The ladies who does make up try to sell you all these crap that you really don't need.  They try to sell me foundations and primers that I know I'm not going to use because I don't like my skin feeling cakey.  They do have great suggestions as far as what a good brand is for a particular makeup.  They have great brushes that I've purchased alot of.

Anyway, the only beef I have with this place is that I find myself always looking for someone to help me.  I see some girls talking to each other and I don't know if I should interrupt because I don't want to be rude.  The managers can also get pretty snobbish making you feel like you shouldn't purchase their great deals instead of trying to sell whatever clearance they have.  I've been to many stores that managers really encourage their customers to get more of their clearance items.

One manager even told us that "by law, we can only get 5 of the same brand".  I've never heard that before!!!  So tell me, does that mean all other stores are breaking the law because they allow their customers to purchase more than 5 of the same brand?  Seriously, if this was a law, you should have it plastered on your walls.  Oh well, managers there do come and go.  So maybe I'll come back when that manager is gone.

I love Ulta, it's where I go to feed my girly cosmetics addiction.  The best thing about Ulta is the selection they have a decent amount of brand name cosmetics on one side of the store and all of the inexpensive drug store brands that we know and love on the other side.  They have just about every gadget you will ever need for your hair, from chi straighteners to rollers and everything in between.  Salesgirls here have always been nice, but are not as helpful as the girls who work at Sephora.  So after such glowing compliments and my self professed love for this store you might be wondering why I'm only giving Ulta three stars.

Last week I bought an Emjoi here, it was over $60 bucks (and that was with a 20% discount).  An emjoi is an epilator and it plucks out your hair so that you don't have to shave/wax.  While I may scream and curse throughout the defuzzing process the truth is I love my little emjoi, it keeps me from looking like Chewbacca.  What I didn't love about the emjoi I bought at Ulta was the fact that it was used.  I thought the inside plastic packaging was a little odd looking, and was horrified at the puff of hairs that blew out of it after the first charge, eewww!  Clearly someone had purchased, used, and then returned this item to the store.  I get it, people return things after using them it happens.  For the love of God please don't restock these used products on the shelf, it's just unsanitary.  When I returned the item the manager was really apologetic and seemed genuinely upset over what happened, I just hope she made sure that it doesn't get restocked and sold to another unsuspecting customer.  In the future I'll still buy make up and other girly goods from Ulta, but I think I'll stay away from any of the beauty appliances from now on.

Haircut diaries: it is a short tale, because I hate getting my hair cut....ever since my stylist deserted me, I have been asking everyone I come across where they get their hair done - like some deranged hair stalker type

I was in Ulta yesterday fiddly farting around and decided to see if they had an apt available - they took me on the spot - and I started to worry I was doing the right thing

$30 bucks later I had my ends trimmed up nicely, the old layers blended in and side swept bangs - Angelique was great and fast. And I liked the fact that I can sit in the chair watching shoppers and dreaming of product while gritting my teeth......good times

I love this store. It is officially my beauty to store! I came here on president's day and had the make up artist try me out on bare minerals and it looks so nice on me :D

Anyways, okay girls this store is like BIGGER THAN ANY SEPHORA I'VE BEEN TO. it's much, much, MUCH more calmer & quiet. it's not stuffy and crowded to the point i can't even look around any more. the workers there will not pester you all the time like sephora. this place is like my alternative to sephora.

I hate malls, and sephora is only found in a mall. This store has most of the high end AND low end cosmetics, so it's like a trip to longs drugs + sephora in one! they offer a lots of sales and the staff is pretty knowledgable. It is somewhat in the middle of no where but there is a vast amount of parking, you don't have to drive around for 10 minutes to finally find a parking spot. If you bring your man with you he can simply walk to the nearest home depot/target! I love this place, they offer free gifts + samples all the time too! I brought my bare minerals kit here for 60$ and nyx eyeliner pencils amounting up to a total 70$ and they gave me this free sugar eyeshadow/blush kit! (: What's not to like!?

I was excited when I found out an Ulta was coming to San Jose.  I could finally find out what all the hype was about.  I was hesitant to drive to Fremont especially with the lack luster reviews I had read.

It's a nice store with a wide variety of cosmetics, hair products, styling tools etc.  I will definitely check this place out if I need to replace my flat iron or buy a new curling iron.  They have a quite a few brands to choose from.  I purchased a two sided vanity mirror from them recently I really like it.  The sales people in the make-up department seem really friendly and willing to help you locate any product you might be looking for.  In the haircare aisle you're kind of on your own.

I usually just breeze through here already knowing what I want.  Maybe when I have time I can explore the store a bit more.

this place is just like a sephora.. except, not as bright or black as sephora and ulta has a salon in the back.. i remember when i first went to this place many many years ago in LA..then suddenly they just started popping up in our area.. i thought it was pretty cool.. finally a department store for hair, skin, and nails not located in the mall!

they have everything you can think of..every brand you can think of as well! for makeup, they carry smashbox, stila, urban decay etc. and they have great skin care stuff (moisturizer, cleansers, lalalala)

but.. be aware.. its realllllllllllly expensive..
the customer service is ok.just OK.

the last three times i have come in you have been out of my smashbox tinted moisturizer with SPF.  it is like the whitest, palest, shade people- who the hell else is buying that shit besides me and michael jackson??  well, i've since switched to senna's and it has an spf of 20 not 15, so there! at this rate i may be trading makeup tricks with marilyn manson soon, but i'll be looking 40 when you sun freaks are lookin' 50!

i also begrudgingly sent my man in here for a haircut, as daniel at the los gatos beauty bar was booked up and we were going to a wedding the next day and his hair was starting to grow from the back of his neck all the way around to his beard.  when he returned home i couldn't help but cry laughing as she had given him a haircut that made him look like a ten year old boy from the front, and like he had asked for some sort of "fade step" like thing in the back.  it was like she was going for some post-modern interpretation of the white man vs. the black mans haircut...  i was just sad he didn't have her shave my initials into the back of his head.  i guess chivalry is dead.  (when we saw his mom later in the week she actually pulled me aside and said "you have to stop him from cutting his own hair jessie, it looks terrible!!)

so yeah the have some high end makeup lines, but they are usually out of all the good stuff, and they do stock some high end hair care products.  but frankly after my experiences here with waxing and then jason's bizarro haircut i really don't think i'll be back.

Very reasonably priced and I like their service here a lot. I bought some scented bath balls ( it really helps you get all relaxed and unwind after a hard day at work) for just under 50 cent each. Surprisingly for the price of 2 quarters they actually smell very good, so next time you're here grab some they are right by the front counter and you can get them in different scents.

Finally!  An Ulta in the South Bay located at The Plant.  I had to check out the grand opening.  Knowing how much of a product junkie I am, I love to shop at beauty supply stores.

Ulta if you don't know is a cross between drugstore cosmetics, a beauty supply store, and somewhat has some of the products that Sephora carries.  There's even a perfume section and a salon where you can get your hair did.  You can find brands like Stila, La-Roche Posay, Terax, Ojon, Oscar Blandi, OPI, Essie, China Glaze, to L'Oreal, Revlon, Burts Bee's, etc., you get my drift.  It's practically an array of brands from low to mid-high end.

The staff is super friendly and not in your face.  Very clean store and well organized.  Lighting is great when you play with the testers in the makeup section.  Don't forget to sign up for your Ulta Club Card.  It's free and you basically receive a reward certificate (depending how you spend per quarter) for free beauty products or salon services.
