Berkeley, CA
Went to the location in the Mission about a month ago and had to come try the one in Berkeley.
I had the mixed vegetable uthappam stuffed with onions, peas, and a bunch of other veggies and fell in love with the dish. Since it was my first time having a uthappam, I admit I don't know what it should be like. However, my friend from India at the table thought it was authentic and delicious.
I also have tried a few of their curries, particularly liked their channa masala, and also have had the spinach dosa. I personally preferred the uthappam to the dosa, but both were great and came with the same scrumptious chutneys to dip.
All in all, this place is cheap for the massive portions and well worth the trip down University. Service is basic and the building doesn't look like much, but the food speaks for itself. -

The Udupi Palace is where I go to get my fix of fresh dosas. My husband and I frequent this restaurant and have been for a few years now.
The last time we had dinner at the restaurant we ordered two mango lassi's, one mysore masala doas, and one special rava masala dosa. The meal was flavorful and authentic.
The service was fast and friendly just the way I like it. The dinner was a hit. I can't wait to return. Next time I hope to try the different pakoras and spinach masala dosa. -

I love Indian food! This place is special for two reasons:
1.) dosas
2.) uthappam
There are a lot of places in Berkeley that sells curry and tandoori chicken, but I've seen a lot fewer dosas and uthappam. It's also a convenient place to go if you have vegetarians in your group.
There aren't a lot of bells and whistles on the dishes, and most of them seem fairly similar to the others. But if you want Southern Indian food, hit this place up.Listed in: The Concierge

SO delicious!! very spicy though. they give you 3 options, mild, medium, and spicy, and my nose was running a bit with mild haha, but it was perfect. I definitely wouldn't go for spicy unless I was cray cray or a badass, especially since we were seated in the corner and the waiter was so busy he didn't notice when I ran out of water. very delicious though, and perfect proportions. Afterward I felt satisfied, but not stuffed, and I ate everything on my plate. Only about $10, too! and everything is vegetarian. I was hoping for something with chicken, but I wasn't disappointed at all with the veggie curry I got :) highly recommend!!

Get the Mysore masala dosa! Its flavorful, suprisingly spicy and just plain 'ol delicious. This is the best, most authentic southern indian cuisine round here. If you like indian....ya gotta go.
I love the chutneys! Stick with the dosas and you will be thrilled. -

Best $ to portions ratio ever.
Best $ to food quality ratio ever.
The Dosas are incredible and enormous.
The South Indian Thali is a great way to sample it all. -

Do yourself a favor and try everything on this menu because this is unlike any Indian food most people in the U.S. have had before. Personally, I prefer the dosas to the uthappams, and the curries are amazing (and I've never been a huge Indian curry fan). Masala chai will also require lots of sweetening, that's the only thing I would change, or, if I would get some better sugar (they only have artificial sweetener or regular white sugar). But that's a tiny, tiny gripe. I take people from out of town here regularly cuz I love it so much.
Oh, and CASH ONLY. -
Review from Bobby N.
First of all I didn't know this place was VEGETARIAN till I got here. I was definitely expecting some meat dishes and was close to relocating. I'm glad I stayed. I can't remember what my friend ordered but I got combination #36. You can forget the pronunciation but it was the bomb!! There was so much variety. Don't let the portion fool you. I'm a heavy eater. The food lasted me the entire day. The best part is the naan-like bread. I has this gooey texture to it that makes it unique, subtle and delicious! I'm so glad I decided to stay. Also, I'm usually particular with restaurant decor but there was something about the place that made it seem like I was in fantasy India. I haven't traveled in ages but for a moment but travel-bug-itis was satiated. I don't know in what other casual way to say this but, "DUDE. GO!"

Went in and sat down to a wonderful meal.. The waiter was super friendly and warned us gently when we tried to order more than we could have possibly eaten.
The dosa's...delightful...delectable and with fillings that inspire and re-energize. They were slightly cripsy and airy and soft enough to hold up to the filling and still be able to attack like a burrito. Wow, my first taste of dosa's and I have to say I am hooked! The endless dipping array also makes for a variety of flavours and combinations that will keep all tastebuds occupied.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Dosa, dosa, dosa. Need I say more? The best SOUTH Indian cuisine in the East Bay, hands down. Super cheap, huge portions, delectable, spicy, and VEGETARIAN. If you are hungry and like Indian food you will not regret eating here. The staff are extremely nice as well.
If you have never tried South Indian cuisine (most "Indian" places serve food from the Nothern areas, with the occasional Goan curry or something thrown in), head on down to Udupi Palace and order yourself a Spinach Masala Dosa. -

Not the best Indian food I have ever had, but currently our fav place for dosas.
We're big fans of southern Indian food - all vegetarian - especially dosas, which are an excellent gluten free option. I think the mysore masala dosa is the best on their menu, not too spicy, but the plain masala dosa is too mild.
Ambiance isn't hugely thrilling, and they only take cash or check, but the food is consistently good and filling. -

I've loved Udupi Palace for so many years now. Easily my favourite south Indian place in all of the bay area. What can I say that already hasn't?
Personal favorite dosa: sada rava dosa. Get that and some idli, and you will be one happy person -

San Francisco, CA
It's not as magical as its San Francisco counterpart, but our server's devotion to one of my dining companions was so creepy that it was cute. Look, the guy couldn't have been older than twenty, so it wasn't really creepy. Just baldly crushy. He kept asking her whether she needed anything. And then there was some detail about the front door being open and a draft being let in that I don't quite remember, but he either offered to close the door for her or said she could do it herself--but not in a mean way, in a totally devotional way.
I wish they had kept the additional dining room. It really was a mess when we were here. It wasn't dirty, but it wasn't presentable either.
The food is excellent, five stars all the way.
So if you're a somethingsomething redhead, you'll probably get excellent service with your excellent food. If you're a thirtysomething guy with brown hair going gray, not so much, at least from this guy.Listed in: Vegetarian Parents in Town?, Downtown Berkeley Eats

The food here is very good.
The service is generally not very good.
And I haven't seen a restaurant more in need of a paint job in a number of years.
I often CRAVE their breads and curries, and can't wait to go. When I do go, the food is always delicious, and the atmosphere and service very lacking. They could be a four or five star joint if they had any incentive to improve on those fronts (they don't, they're near the university, and restaurants near universities don't need to excel to make money -- at least their food isn't the usual university area grade-D slop fit only for livestock and stoned students). -

0 (yes, ZERO) stars for service. Here's why:
Usually they don't track who's there when so though you arrive first, the next table's order is taken and/or arrives first. Worse, on a recent visit during lunch, they were burning incense. I mentioned my fragrance allergies and how I couldn't breathe incense and dine. They said OK. I said, so I should go across the street then? They said OK.
So basically they were willing to lose my business so they could offend their atmosphere with stinky/allergen-full incense. Not cool.
That said, the food here is really good, like 4.5 stars good. Fresh, tasty, not too greasy.
My favorite East Bay Indian spot until the incense incident. -

4.5 Stars (knocked .5 stars for various things, one being it takes ONLY cash/check)
I'm not a vegetarian but I could live on food like this if I was one.
Service: Good. Friendly, offered us some wonderful recommendations.
We ordered:
~Sampler - This is probably what anyone and everyone who isn't that familiar with Indian food should try. It comes with all their curries and the bread and some desserts. All the curries were wonderful and just the right portion.
~Spicy vegetable curries - I got this in very spicy. The spiciness was just the right amount and it also came with coconut sauce. If its too spicy, have some of the coconut sauce and it calms your taste buds down for sure.
~UTHAPPAM - Don't remember which one. This was okay. Very filling.
SMALL TIP: if you want your waiter to come to you - raise your hand like you did in kindergarten or close your menu and put it down on the table because they will assume your ready to order. I think this goes for every restaurant and it works for me every time. -

Went to Udupi for dinner last night with my boyfriend. Never again. At the END of our meal, I found a cockroach in our paneer makhani. I don't know how, but I managed to keep my composure long enough to inform the waiter, who ran to the kitchen with my plate of la cucaracha a la carte.
My throat started to close up and all the food I had just eaten started to climb. I was sick to my stomach and had to keep swallowing to keep myself from throwing up. It seemed like hours before our waiter finally reappeared to let us know we didn't have to pay for our meal. Duh.
I couldn't eat until 2PM the next day.
The boyfriend made a great point, "If their food was fresh, cockroaches wouldn't be swimming in it."
27 hours later, I'm still having flashbacks.
I pray that I will be able to eat Indian food again. -

I love Udupi, possibly my favorite Indian restaurant in the near Berkeley area. Yes, dosas are amazing, but the "Udupi specials" should not go unnoticed.
Portions are generous and flavors are powerful, as with all Indian food, but the service is whippy fast. The metal plates and trays make the experience all the more unique and fun, and all the little dipping sauces makes every bite unpredictable.
Our waiter was so helpful in explaining most of the dishes to us. There aren't any English translations, so it may be helpful to study before you go!
There's one dish with 2 curries and a flat bread that's like the Taiwanese pull-apart bread that I will now dream about for the next week. -

I have hit up all three of the Bay Area Udupis on a semi-regular basis. These are some of the best dosas around, served with sour-sweet chutneys, cooling raita, and tangy dal. If you're in SF, pass on Dosa and head here instead...costs less and tastes better (however, the plates at Dosa are fancier, so if that's worth paying ~$5 extra then be my guest).
Special Rava Masala dosa is my favorite, although I like the Paneer Peas Utthappam and Chana Bhatura. All of the appetizers are delicious, variations on the theme of vegetables dipped in lentil flour batter and fried.Listed in: Meatless Friendly, Best Cheap Eats

Came here with a Vegan friend who had just gone gluten free. Our options were limited but I would go back again with my carnivore eat anything friends. I got the rice biryani and was quite impressed. The samosas and chutney looked very good though I did not get to try them myself. Dosas looked equally bomb.

Review from Andrew C.
Udupi Palace is a vegetarian South Indian restaurant known for their Dosas and Uthappams. Dosas are crepe like and made with fermented batter while Uthappams are thicker like pancakes also made with a fermented rice batter. The website mentions a lunch buffet, but be forewarned, there isn't one at the Berkeley location.
I usually go for one of the specials, either the Thali (assorted curries, pickles, dips, rice served in small bowls on a metal tray (not my pic http://www.yelp.com/bi...) or the Udupi Special (select Dosa or Uthappam with Idly (steamed lentil cake) and Medhu Vada (lentil donut)).
Last time I went I got the Udupi Special with Masala Dosa (spiced potatoes http://www.yelp.com/bi...). It's a pretty good serving of food and comes with sambar (thinish veggie stew), coconut chutney, and a spicy red chutney.
The dosas are large. This was maybe 20 inches long and cut in half. Only the center 1/2 is filled with the potatoes which still fills me up and I can rip off pieces of the crispy crepe for dipping into the sauces. The potatoes and onions were flavorful and just lightly spiced.
The Idly was dense compared to other visits and I didn't enjoy it. The Vada / donut was great. Crispy outside and warm moist inside.
The sambar is good. I like the coconut chutney at Vik's better.Listed in: Indian

i was in the neighborhood and was craving for some indian food so we wanted to stop by chaat's. my friend was vegetarian and udupi was right across the street.
everything about this place was a-ok!
the food was good, filled my stomach for 2 hours and soon got hungry afterwards.
the service was good too, though i did have some problems communicating with the staff. for example, i would request for something and wouldnt get a confirmation from the servers, but the items eventually made their way to our table.
what really bugged me was how they kept the door closed and it was really warm inside. also used the bathroom and it was cramped and stuffy inside!

Good solid authentic south indian food. Coming from so-socal's indian food, I wasn't expecting this.
We came at a weird time, and so the place was empty (berkeley location) but as it turns out the food was great, service was super friendly, and the presentation was nice compared to all other s. indian joints i've been to.
I'll review the dosas here: the rava dosa was among the bes tI've had. I expect rava dosas to be oily, but this one was rich without being smothered in butter and grease. the potatoes were soft, but not mealy and overcooked (dosai lovers know what I mean) like they can be.
I split the veggie stuffed dosa and it was good, but the real star was the rava dosa! the outside was crisp on the edges, and not too soft in the middle. Spices were just right, and adjustable to your liking.
So far NorCal has had me impressed!
Very affordable too! -

3.5 stars? come on yelp! I've had a lot of Indian food in my life from cities all around the United States. I've been here several times with many groups of people and made a point to try most things on the menu by now and I've never had anything that wasn't good. Many things are flat-out fantastic.
The service is really good too. A cheerful Eastern fellow with an incredible memory and a great willingness to accommodate special needs and requests from my friends usually takes our order. There was a crotchety young woman who looked at me as if she disliked me personally, but she doesn't seem to work there anymore.
You really can't go wrong, but I'll give you a few recommendations anyway:
Samosas - the best samosas in town for sure. They have a great crispy wrapper, are rich with flavor and have a pleasant spiciness. Dip them in the cilantro based sauce with which they come for a rapturous delight!
Special Spring Dosa - Dosas are crepe like things, in this case, stuffed with Southern Indian goodness -- a brilliant medley of exquisitely seasoned diced vegetables and spices.
Mango Lassi - Hey, it's a mango lassi and it tastes great. It's a mangoey yogurt drink. It tastes great. I dunno what else to tell you.
Like I said before, it's tough to go wrong. As a general rule, the things labeled as "mild" tend to be more boring than the other food, but might be a good option if you're bringing your children or someone very sensitive to spicy food. In fact, that reminds me that they are not so good at toning down the spiciness for those of you with sensitive palates or just generally weaker constitutions. It doesn't bother me but it's worth mentioning. Oh ya... one more thing. Regarding the salty lassi. Fools rush in where vegans fear to tread. I'm not saying not to order yourself a salty lassi. I'm just saying don't order one unless you are the kind of person that likes drinking salty yogurt. I'm sure it'll be great if you like that sort of thing.
Really the only downside is that it is cash only. -

Udupi Palace has been hit or miss the last few years. It has went from good too "too oily" for southern Indian. That was perhaps due to changes in the cooking staff. It seemed to be on the rebound. Then last week two of our friends brought some UP takeout to our house.
I was the only one who had the Parantha Aloo bread. That night I threw up and had the worst diarrhea since I was in Mexico city in 2000. It knocked me out for 24 hours. I don't think that I will go back to Udupi since giving me a food borne illness usually takes you off of my "places to go". -

I pass by this place often, but rarely at mealtimes, so I never really am able to eat here. Its name always amused me though, so I promised myself i would eat there one day, and I finally got the chance. I had the rasa vada appetizer, which is two lentil doughnuts in a spicy broth, and a special spinach paneer dosa. The rasa vada was tomatoey, and not too spicy. The lentil doughnuts soaked up a ton of broth too, making the appetizer even better. The dosa was huge and delicious, it had whole spinach as well as a sort of spinach chutney spread on the dosa. Let me tell you... the coconut chutney that comes with the dosa is amazing!
Be warned, Udupi Palace has huge portions. A single dosa order could easily feed two people. Great atmosphere within the restaurant too, it seems like Udupi actually serves legitimate Indian food instead of generic spicy curry #23.
The only weird thing i experienced is that the waiter seemed offended or something because I had not finished my salted lassi by the end of the meal. He asked me if i didn't like it. No, its great, I just became full. Not a huge deal, this is still an awesome place to eat. Definitely coming back. -

Berkeley, CA
5 stars for amazing dosa! I don't normally give 5-star ratings but it's so incredibly rare to find good dosa that how can I not?
My husband prefers the paper dosa (a very thin, gigantic crepe made of rice and lentils) and served with a spiced potato mixture with sambar (a vegetable soup) and chutneys (one coconut, one tomato/red pepper-based) for dipping. Or, sometimes, he opts for the rava dosa -- it's made with a thicker, spongier "cream of wheat" batter that I don't particularly care for. My personal favorite is the mysore masala dosa -- the crepe is slightly thicker than the paper dosa but the inside is smeared with a spicy mixture that I love! All the sides and condiments are the same as for the paper dosa.
While the food is fantastic (definitely opt for the South Indian dishes like dosa and uthappam and avoid the North Indian options -- there's much better restaurants for North Indian cuisine), this is definitely a hole-in-the-wall, kind of grungy place with not-the-most-attentive service. A small price to pay for great dosa though. -

Great Vegetarian Indian Restaurant.
Definitely a hole in the wall restaurant, not very fancy.
Lots of options and large portions.
The wait staff is nice.
Dosa is great, chole batura is okay, puri is pretty good.
Big issue is that they only accept cash or checks and are slow to bring you a to-go box/bag. -

I've passed Udupi Palace many times on my way to Trader Joe's but never gave it a shot until yesterday. My boyfriend picked up dinner to go from here when I was feeling down yesterday. I always treat myself to good indian food when I'm a bit blue.
I've always gone to Biryani House for my usual order of palak ghost, but I've been converted! I had this "spinach gravy" dish and life has not been the same since. Kidding, but really it was incredibly flavorful and spicy--just the way I like it.
I'll definitely be coming here again soon. Maybe this is a bit premature, but I think I'm going to be a regular at this place in no time. -

Berkeley, CA
On your way to Trader Joe's, you have most surely passed by Udupi Palace (UP), juxtaposed with an art supply store and a boarded up building on the corner of University and MLK. But don't be deceived by its dank surrounds: UP ranks among the great gastronomic gems of Berkeley. The inside is inviting, with potted plants and high ceilings, but is cramped, with roughly one foot separating each block of tables. While you may bump into your neighbor when rising from your seat, there are no other noticeable drawbacks to the interior. Honestly, we wish we could tell you more about the décor but we neglected to take copious notes as we were too distracted by the food.
UP distinguishes itself by being one of the few places in Berkeley (and really, one of the few places in the U.S.) that specializes in South Indian vegetarian cuisine. While other restaurants may occasionally throw a dosa or two onto their menu, UP gives patrons the true South Indian experience by having entire menu sections devoted to dosas (paper thin crepes rolled around varies curry stuffings) and uthappams (rice and lentil pancakes about 0.5 cm in thickness) with nearly a dozen options in each section. Featured South Indian street food favorites include four varieties of vada (a fried savory donut) and three varieties of idly (dense rice dumpling), available as appetizers. As a Bangalore native, Yogi attests that the menu options could very well rival those at some restaurants in South India itself.
Left with the inability to completely process all the exotic possibilities, we settled on what we believed would be a representative data set. A staple of any self-respecting Udupi establishment should be its mysore masala dosa ($6) which performed admirably. The dosa exhibited good radial uniformity in texture and thickness, which, Yogi contends from personal experience, is not always easy to achieve. The dosa's length, ~20 in., is ample but not so absurd as to question what the chef is compensating for. The spiciness was slightly lower than expected but was decent, and could be augmented by the accompanying chutneys. The masala dosa ($6) was less flavorful than its mysore variant but both dosas were extremely filling, as expected. Each dosa was served with sambar, a minestrone-soup-like dip, which was a little on the watery side but otherwise included a good blend of well cooked vegetables and lentils. The Udupi Combo was a great value, at $9, and had a wide variety of small dishes to sample, including onion & hot chili uthappam, idly, and medhu vada. The uthappam was complemented well by the equally spicy special vegetable curry ($9), and the poori ($1.25) was rich and fluffy. We only regret that we could not also sample other South Indian favorites such as the rasam, bisi bele bhath, pongal, and bondha, just to name a few.
Overall, UP can be summarized in one word: foodgasm. It is thus the first restaurant to receive our highest rating of five samosas. The prices place UP squarely in the two-rupee category, yielding an impressive samosa-to-rupee ratio of 2.5. Provided that you are willing to brave the food coma that follows, an opportunity to dine at UP should not be passed up.

The food here is amazing and so are the prices! It was very busy on Saturday night, cash only (and very hot inside, ohhhmygod). They have two young boys running the front of the house and service was quite spotty. The food beats out everything though! Might order out next time, but definitely adding it to our regular restaurant rotation!

Had a particular craving for Indian food after seeing Prasad (a vegetarian restaurant in the UK) come in as runner up as best restaurant in the UK, out of 12,000 restaurants, as judged by Gordon Ramsay on his "Best Restaurant" show from last fall.
Udupi in Berkeley met all my criteria for a wonderful dining experience -- delicious vegan food and reasonable prices. Plus, it was delivered fairly quickly. Only minor wish was more frequent checking for water refills (I am particularly thirsty when eating spicy food).
Highly recommend: Samosa Chaat - it's a samosa in a channa masala with fresh tomatoes, onions, cilantro. Absolutely wonderful mix of flavors. Next favorite dish is the okra curry Kadai Bhindi. The mix veggie uthappam also delicious with its dipping sauces and the sambar. It was not as intense in the seasonings as the other dishes, so a nice respite. Also ordered the channa masala, but didn't like it as much; next time I'd just order my own individual Samosa Chaat in place of the channa masala. -

Udupi Palace is a solid dosa joint with fair prices and ad hoc decor. The Berkeley location is quieter than the San Francisco location (where the din really reverberates). Both locations offer the same menu of many variations on a few classic south Indian vegetarian dishes. It's not always great, but generally pretty good (though it could get old if you went multiple times in the same week).
