This theater creeped me out! It was old, and there was basically no one there! I went to watch 'white chicks' a while ago, and there were like only 4 people in the small theater (not stadium seating)...I couldn't see the face of the dude sitting right behind me, and that totally creeped me out! He didn't laugh when everyone else in front of me was laughing at certain scenes. anyway, super quiet like a ghost town theater. Prefer AMC Bay Street waaaay more!
But alas, it is true that AMC doesn't get some of the new hits every so often (Obsessed & 17 again), so this is the next closest place to go to. The other option is to head to Jack London, but that is a bit of a trip.
Eek! This theater is OLD. Like, desperate for renovations old. It's a good place to see a movie if you're not so fond of packed theaters, and the staff are friendly. Oh, and the nachos here are super gross.
I remember coming here a looooong time ago to watch a movie. Forward several years later. I came back to watch, "He's Just Not That Into You." A great cast but movie sux.
This theatre suited my needs. We got the matinee deal of $8.75 on a Wed. afternoon. No one was there so no lines, no crowds, and they offer stadium seating. For a shorty, stadium seating is highly important to me!
The Theater That Time Forgot.
I went here on a recent cold, rainy evening to see a movie and it was FREAKIN'-ASS COLD in the theater. I went outside to find a manager and told him so.
His reply had me scratching my head: "I'll go and check the a/c."
It's nothing special to look at.
While my friends ran off to the bathroom before the movie, I loitered near the concession stand wondering if there would be any way I could manually shove any of the contents of my breakfast around so I could fit some popcorn in there. I placed both hands on my stomach and thought about it. Popcorn always smells good although you know full well that the weird yellow stained poofs they were shoveling into buckets would probably cause fake-butter fallout. It's that unwelcome surprise on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I can't handle fallout in a public restroom so I refrained.
I wandered away from the smell and saw one of those climb-in driving games, except this was one was HUGE. I jumped on up to the platform, sat on the seat and took the gigantic steering wheel in my hands.
18 WHEELER! REALLY?
The game took tokens and not quarters so I spun the wheel, pushed the pedals and switched gears until my friends emerged from the ladies room to find me fake driving.
*photographic evidence has been posted*
After the film, we walked out of the theater in the opposite direction and discovered another arcade game I could not stop gawking at.
Why anyone would play a game called 'Flamin' Finger' is beyond me.
You don't know where that finger's been.
I ain't touchin' it.
This theater is definitely starting to show its age. I went recently to watch the Transformers movie, and the quality of the screens was decent, but the chairs were definitely starting to get old and uncomfortable. The popcorn was fresh when I went, although waaaaay too salty (in an effort to make you get drinks I'm sure). The theater also tends to get a lot of junior high and high schoolers that tend to be rude and loud (not the best for dates or families).
For a better family movie-going experience, try the AMC Bay Street down the street.
So, I finally saw the Sex and the City movie. As much as I loved the show, I didn't care what happened to the ladies after they all got their happy endings. Who wants reality in a movie? Not me, thanks. But, my chubis had been waiting for the moment when I would weaken and agree to go. And someone was thoughtful enough to bring wine in a Sigg bottle and glasses because she felt like we had to make it special. Not plastic, mind you, glasses, to this fairly dumpy theater. How cute is that?
I remember coming here when I was at Cal and it was nicer than most of the theaters on Shattuck. That was clearly a long time ago because more often than not, when I walk in these days, it stinks. I'm not sure what the scent is but it's not pleasant.
Still, there is plenty of free parking and if you want to go to the area that has all the chain stores, it's a short walk away and you don't have to deal with that ridiculous parking stucture.
Meh. I've been in a lot worse theaters.
I've only seen a couple dramas here so they sound wasn't tested by any means. The picture was decent, no skips or delays.
It's going to have the usual suspects running around the place, I mean you're right beside Oakland.
We don't avoid this theater, but it's not a place we're excited to run out to catch a flick at.
Yucky. The theaters and screens are small and it smells like old people.
Still, we'd waited too long for our movie (Sex and the City) and it was only playing here. I very much enjoyed the wine my friend snuck in ... and knowing that my girls sitting next to me were also tearing up.
Sure it's a cheesy movie, but come on Juicy ... who doesn't want that love story? Okay, maybe not exactly that love story ... but A love story?
These reviews had me fearful of what would happen when I went there to see "Get Smart" on its opening night a week or so ago.
Yeah, the theater isn't as flashy as the nearby AMC Bay Street 16...but it still had stadium seating, great sound and plenty of parking. Probably the only thing that seemed ghetto to me were the extended advertisements for TBS' "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" in advance of the movie....GHETTO....but actually provided us entertainment in its own way.
My advice? Don't fear this theater as much as you think you need to.
You most likely won't get caught in any gang crossfire...I say leave the bullet proof vest at home!
This place totally brings me back to the movie theatres of my youth - a dark, dingy lobby with a few arcade games. A sorry looking snack bar offering stale popcorn popped 3 days ago. Fewer screens than all the huge multi-plexes that are springing up all over the place. Not always showing the latest blockbusters.
But every now and then, this place gets a movie that isn't being at AMC Bay Street (Borat, for example) and I am forced to come here instead. To their credit, they do have stadium seating in all their theatres and they accept credit cards. They also offer student discounts for you lucky folks who still look like your photos.
So I only went to this theater because it was close and it had a movie i wanted to see that for whatever the reason, this was the only theater playing the new release (it turned out to be over hyped and sucked)
Anyways not even sure why this place is still open, its right around the corner from the way newer, way nicer emeryville theater.
So we knew this is a crap hole as you are walking up. We buy tickets 10.25 each.... 10.25? the brand new theater charges 10.50... you have to be kidding that a place like this is charging as much as the brand new theater!!!! ugh whats next? Oh they don't take debit or credit so you have to use their ATM that of course charges $2.00... okayyyy
We get our tickets and the place is run down, it looks like something out of a bad movie.. it sort of smells, the carpets in the lobby really do look like they endured a flood of some sorts??? not sure about that... they have cheap advertising everywhere, the man behind the counter takes about 5 minutes to acknowledge me and then i get my Slurpee, candy and water and go to get seated...
the good thing is you can take your time since there was probably 8 people in the theater, 3 being the actual workers...
so we get seated, and the place stinks of mold or something, couldn't figure it out.. something was definitely off there though...
anyways the seating was not comfy, we were in a rocking section i guess but the seats fell back way to far, we moved over, no luck same thing, moved back a row... SAME THING... thinking it might be time to invest some money in seats...
sound quality was poor at best...
over all i would give this place no stars if that was an option...
It's kinda sad that the brand new shiney theater at Emery Bay makes this theater look so shabby. Also, is it just me, or is the crowd increasingly mean and ghetto scary? Thank god for security. But I will say this, unlike AMC 16 people haven't been needed to be thrown out. The crowd, though perhaps a bit more classless behave themselves.
Once a chica actually held the door of the bathroom stall for me. Isn't that nice of her?
They DO play all the things that AMC 16 isn't playing so if you missed a movie opening weekend, you can see it here.
If you're having trouble parking, try behind.
If you have to see a movie and it is only playing here, I would go but it is close to my last choice. Same goes for the Berkeley UA. They don't keep up with the times.
So after a long bike ride with three huge climbs I wanted to spend President's Day napping. My girlfriend wanted to do something. So we compromised on a movie.
This placed earned two stars, one it was close and two it was relatively clean. But that is all I can give this place. The screen was torn, once I noticed I could not stop fixating on the tear in the screen, the line to buy tickets was absurdly long and the sound was sub-par. Otherwise not bad, at least I got my nap.
I like this movie theatre. I wish that they wouldn't put all the good movies there, but then again, if they didn't, then I'd never go. Anyway, this theatre is a little more ghetto, but it adds to the atmosphere.
Here's a list of movies I've seen there:
Pootie Tang
Blue Crush
XXX
Nacho Libre
These are the ones that stand out.
And there is a Public Market with all sorts of food. This is a good place to eat. The gem of this area is the arcade. They have old school Simpsons and X-Men. Multiplayer!
Nasty...
This use to be the spot, long ago when I was in junior high and high school. We would pay for one movie and see three. The last movie I seen here was with my nephews was "Mines, Yours and Ours" - while waiting for the movie I notice little pink critters crawling around on the lower half of the theatre. That was it, I went to complain to the manager, who said they were having trouble with getting rid of the mice, and couldn't encourage employees to catch them. She refunded my money - but I though I just brought popcorn, nachos, and drinks from this place for my nephews consumption. We enjoyed the movie but I couldn't stop watching the floor. I would suggest going to Bay Street AMC - I take my nieces and nephews their everytime I get a break from school.
This theater brings back memories of coming here as a kid with my siblings and grandfather and just movie hop all day! This theater was great because it is located across the lot from the Marketplace for food and an arcade for games. But every since the Bay St center opened, I assumed this theater was going downhill and I just haven't been here in years...until tonight.
To my surprise, they were showing Transformers while the Bay St theater did not have it....lucky!
Now maybe Bay St just seems more "high class" or something, but it's just a totally different crowd that goes here. The atmosphere of waiting in line to get in outside the theater was horrible! While in line, guys were just cutting in front of people or just crowding the entrance when the line started moving. There were loud profanities and N-words thrown around, just to give you an idea of the mannerisms of the crowd here. When the line started moving, there was no organized line once inside the theater. Many people just started rushing, bumping others out of the way.
Inside was a little bit better. I think they remodeled the theaters because I did not remember them having tiered seating in my youth and that greatly improved my experience. But once again, I was in the same theater as the people that were outside so there was the same old disrespectful chatter during the movie.
My 2 star rating isn't really the fault of the theater, just the atmosphere and crowd brought it down for me. It's not everyone that ruins it, just there are many people at this location that are rude. I would rather stick with Bay St, even with the bad parking.
The 1 thing I hate - too much use of the n-word
No redeeming qualities from this place....zero atmosphere, tiny bunk screens, bad attitudes from the employees...all at multi-plex prices.
Of course I haven't been back there in 10 years, so this all could've changed but I doubt.
eh, I'm not the biggest fan of this theatre...
biggest reason: it felt a bit young...seriously young...
I was outside on the phone waitin for my friends to come and I musta saw like a dozen cars droppin off groups of teens and teenie-boppers and I knew right then and there that I was instantly the old guy trying to be cool...not the greatest feeling...lol
Anyways, it's ur basic theatre, overpriced tickets, overpriced food, and so much more...lol
i personally love this type of theatre. its classic looking with a marquee and neon lights, yes, like a real movie theatre. its secluded and empty. FREE PARKING!!! and the public market is right there for a pre or post movie meal.
i hate going to a movie, fighting for parking, waiting in line just to hunt for seats with drunk/high kids screaming, being loud etc etc...im sure you all have similar stories. i like to watch movies in silence, i like being able to stretch my long legs without worrying about how close your head is to my feet and i really dont like having others peoples feet close to my head!!
the seats are good and comfy, the screen and sound are great. the food and ticket prices are horrible but all theaters charge about the same...so my point is...if youre gonna spend $20 on food and a ticket, why then hassle with annoying people and parking!?!?
Okay so my friend and i came here to only watch kung fu panda yesterday since we're both two ultra losers who still haven't seen the movie. So the ticketing people are okayish i guess, but the concessions woman was extremely well how do you put it rude? So i bought a small popcorn, water and crunch, my friend got a small popcorn, but the lady was like to her "is that your sister? pointing to me and my friend goes like "no shes a friend," then the lady goes like "best friend?" and my friend is really annoyed now at this point and she's like "yes" then the lady goes like so you dont like her like THAT? exsqueeze me??? i want to talk to your manager NOW!
i'm never coming back even if its $1 candy night, i'm going to take my movie seeing to grand lake theatre or spend more money on the AMC on bay street.
I like this theater alot better than the AMC. Much quieter, and more parking. Its right next to the Public Market, and they show better movies than the AMC.
A little depressing, but otherwise ok. Maybe it just reminds me a little too much of my suburban upbringing and the many hours I spent in multiplexes that had arcades. This was the only place close to my house that was showing Nacho Libre, so I gotta give it up for that. Plus, none of the proximity to Ikea and parking bullshit that the AMC has.
Although, they don't have the most recent movies... and they are a little out of the way... they do have lots of parking and some nice showing... also, the food court next door is ghetto but fun.
No stadium seating. Dirty. No reason to go here unless you have to, and I'm not sure why that would be...
