If no one tells you that you over salt your cooking, you will always serve salty food, die of high blood pressure and kill those that eat your cooking.

If no one calls you out for writing intense, mean and hurtful emails that are projecting the stress from work, arguments with other friends and frustration of built up miss-commutations, you'll do it again, be hated by those people too and end up a big fat loner.

If no one tells you that you are wearing your shoulders as earrings in your downward dog, it will commit to muscle memory and you will walk around shrugging your shoulders 24/7.

In everyday life including on your yoga mat, constructive criticism is essential for personal growth.   Since becoming a Westsider, I have taken a long hiatus from practicing at U Studio.  After taking Andrea's class this Sunday, it reminded that it is necessary not only to practice yoga weekly, but to know what I am doing wrong, so I can fix it.   At U Studio, the individualize alignment and pose corrections you get from Andrea will help you grow as a yogi and change your yoga practice forever!

For years, I hated the bridge pose.  And guess what, for 5 years I have been doing the bridge pose wrong!! With a minor correction of my elbow position, my bridge pose now feels 1000x better!  Maybe one day, I could have figured it out, but it was awesome that Andrea corrected me, so I didn't have to go on for the next 5 years doing it wrong.    Sometimes, it takes that person to make you aware of your mistakes, so you can further your growth as a yogi and most importantly as a person.

As much as I find the donation yoga around Santa Monica convenient with a great environment for practicing yoga, I have decided to trek out to Mid-Wilshire from the Westside for a monthly tune up. A challenging class and individualized attention is necessary to grow as a yogi. Plus the drive is worth it to practice with a hilarious teacher who knows your name and in a studio located in a historic building with a beautiful serene view of the Hollywood hills

Useful information:
Andrea's classes are $15
Community classes are Tuesday and Thursday @ 7, Saturday @ 4 for $10
There's plenty of street parking
Parking is free on Sunday @ the lot in the back
Bring a towel and a bottle of water

Why can I only rate up to five stars on Yelp.  Just like people are petitioning for a "dislike" button on the FB, I think we should petition for a sixth star option for very rare places like U Studio Yoga.

Okay, let me set the scene.  I'm a big guy, who's trying to make a change to my body and my life to become healthy.  I'm very active, but overweight. Now I'm working with a doctor weekly, micro managing my diet, training with a personal trainer, taking B-12 injection, etc, etc...  I mean business...  But two weeks in my back got hurt...  Oh no!!! My business partner highly recommended trying his yoga studio as he swears that it is essential to his health and has helped his bad knees and back, etc...

So I bit the bullet...  This morning my g/f and I went to Andrea's 10:30 Sunday class.  I was so worried that a big guy in a yoga class would be like a "fat guy in a little coat..."  WOW I was wrong on so many levels!!!

#1 - Being a first timer to this class  I was immediately welcomed and felt at home.

#2 - This was my first time ever doing yoga, what the F* do I do???  Andrea made this so easy I felt like I understood and could execute 90% of the poses almost immediately.  I even received some compliments for my poses and very positive guidance on how to improve some that I struggled with.

#3 - This yoga is not just stretching!!!  Again, I'm a big guy who wants to lose weight.  The cardio and the core exercises involved with this class is insane.  Don't be scared, but if you want to be challenged in a way that you have never been in your gym, you've got to try this!

#4 - Bring a towel.  I'm not going to expand on this, just do it...

#5 - My g/f has taken many yoga classes, including birkim two days earlier, and she has never been more challenged in any yoga class before.

Okay, it's getting late, and I could go on and on.  This is the real deal.  And after one class I think I'm going to become a regular.

Six stars to Andrea and U Studio!  I'm not a pro, but now I'm a believer!

I'll keep this simple. This is the first yoga class I have been to where I thought I might not make it through. Andrea is very supportive and definitely pushes you to do your best workout. Word of advice, sit away from the heater if you are not used to practicing in high temperature...I thought I was going to pass out.

I really like Andrea Marcum and enjoy her classes; I just started going.  She is fun, challenging, and real.  I really like that she is teaching us, helping us become more aware of how our body is aligned and is feeling.  At YogaWorks, many of the good teachers' classes are overflowing and I don't feel like I am able to learn or grow from my practice.  Also this class has felt to me more like a community than just an exercise session with other people.

The classes are reasonably priced, especially in a 10 class series (12 bucks a class!)  I'm so happy to have found a really awesome yoga studio in mid-Wilshire area!  Parking is convenient but so is getting there by public transit.

I really like the studio too - the views are great (hills to the north and downtown to the east).

I found U-Studio on Yelp and am so glad! It's nearby and fantastic. You would never know it existed in an old art deco building on Wilshire but it does! You get a great view of the city at night while getting your om on!

I took Andrea's class for the first time a couple months ago and still remember it to this day...holy moley! It was the HARDEST yoga class I have ever taken in my life. Seriously one of the best workouts!

It's for all levels but I wouldn't suggest it for a beginner. The class was very fast paced and I was literally dripping with sweat. She challenges you to your fullest extent and will give you little metaphors to help keep you going. At the end of class she brings everyone into a such a mellow zen zone you almost forget that you were almost crying during the abs a mere 70 minutes ago!

There are little floor heaters on in the corner so if you don't like heat stay away from them. Bring water and a towel...you will need it! Parking in the lot behind is a couple bucks or you can find a meter. I'll be back soon!

Andrea Marcum runs a rigorous class at U studio, with a keen focus on alignment and strength. I first took andrea's class in 2004 and even with a two year hiatus abroad, I consistently used her audio cds. After having tried many studios and intructors around Los Angeles, I've discovered that Andrea simply runs the best and most challenging course.

The locale itself is almost psychedelic; located on the fifth floor of an art deco, former department store during the pre-Depression boom, this space works. It's absolutely inorganic, but that's what makes it fun, though maybe not when your dun.

Cause Andrea the main instructor, rocks everybody's socks til soaked with doggie positions such as downward facing, upward, turbo, and donkey punch. (oh wait, is the last position my own exercise?) The best part about her, is that she consistently emphasizes self-improvement and not to fall into the compete-beat-everyone attitude that our society has.

Plus at the end, she actually rings a real gong rhythmatically, putting everyone into a hypnotic trance.

How rad is that?

Andrea Markum is coming up on the two-year anniversary of striking out on her own, and I'm happy to be able to introduce fellow Yelpers to her yoga studio. Hers is a vinyasa flow class designed for all levels but catering to those who prefer a rigorous workout. Students who prefer chanting or perhaps a quieter practice might not find what they're looking for here, but those of us who've grown addicted to Andrea's style, warmth and sense of humor cannot say enough about our beloved U Studio. Situated on the fifth floor of an older office building, the studio has great light, good energy and forever views. The practice, as I mentioned, is challenging, with occasional long poses and good attention to proper form. Andrea teaches twice a day, 6 times a week, and the recently added Ursula - also highly recommended - currently covers a few evening shifts. Hope you come and hope you like it.
