Abysmal. Desperate for good Chinese food in the sea of mediocre UWS Chinese I mistakenly tried U Like.
Barely acceptable - General Tso's Chicken (extra hot), white rice, wonton soup
Bad - beef w/broccoli, fried dumplings, fried rice
Truly inedible - Hot and sour soup, Szechuan Dumplings (deep fried??)Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - andy t.New York, NY34044133Apr 14, 2010
Every time I order from one of those cheapo Chinese food places, I find myself regretting it later on. And then I inevitably do it again.
Happened again recently, when against my better judgment I called in a delivery order from the nearby U Like Garden. (The name of this place reminds of bar names in Africa: aka "The Best Place to Drink Bar" or "Happy Go Lucky Mr Friendly Bar"...)
Anyway, I couldn't pass up the House Special Chicken Wings ($4.50 per order or $5.50 with fried rice), for which you have the choice between Sesame, Honey-Glazed, Spicy or Generals! Very cool.
I opted for the General Chicken Wings and also added some House Special Lo Mein for another fiver. I must say this wasn't all that bad. The chicken wings were tasty enough and the noodles were average but still disappeared fast.
Do I like U LIke Garden? Indeed, I like.Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Cesca B.Brooklyn, NY8818612Nov 12, 2009
My standards are pretty low for Chinese. As long as there is nothing moving in my take-out box, I'm happy. But...well, I ordered a lot of it because it was so cheap and figured I could subsist on the leftovers for a few days while I'm immersed in hateful homework this weekend. It was so cheap! But I ended up throwing away all the leftovers because I knew I wouldn't be able to bring myself to go through the trouble to re-heat and then consume the food.
I initially wanted to try the place because they have crab rangoons on the menu and they are so hard to find in New York and usually if you do find them they're crappy. No exception here.
I wouldn't say it was the worst Chinese I ever had (that award goes to Dragon Chef in Brighton, Massachusetts), but it was pretty bad. Just...not good. Would not order it again.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Janie W.York, ME44287Jul 23, 2011
This review is for delivery only.
Delivery time was pretty fast, ordered through Grubhub. The food was uneven. The spring roll and egg roll was good, but the cold sesame noodles were way too spicy. Sesame chicken was mushy, most likely because it got steamed in the container. Beef mei fun was decent.
The reason for 2 stars is because after the meal both my boyfriend and I had upset stomachs - he more so than I, so I worry about food poisoning, especially in light of another review on here with the same complaint.
I will not be ordering from here again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Sheryl M.Bronx, NY52112Feb 19, 2012
I've ordered takeout from this place for a longtime (circa 2010!). Usually I get chicken and broccoli. Food is fine, no drama. My boyfriend and I ordered from here on Valentine's Day. I got my usual, he ordered snow peas with chicken. He tipped the guy 5 bucks and we proceeded to open our food. Immediately I noticed a foul smell of something burnt. It was his food. We called back and the woman was incredibly rude, insisting that he didn't know how the meal was supposed to taste.
After some back and forth they sent out a new order. My boyfriend and I were worried about the quality of food, after such a hostile exchange, so he called back for a refund. The woman got nasty on the phone again, and we ended up walking there to hand over the new order and demand a refund. They were clearly cursing at us in another language, but they gave us the money back. We will not be ordering from them again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Briandrea S.San Jose, CA1160May 22, 2011
Not good. Just finished the food here and I feel sick. We've ordered delivery twice and the food is not consistent. First time was okay, but they forgot the soda. Second time was horrible, and they forgot the crab rangoon.
I ordered curry chicken lunch special both times. The first time was not bad, so I figured I'd give it another try. The second time, the curry chicken sauce was watery and clear. That is not curry. It tasted bland. And the rice? Don't get me started. What kind of rice is this? It's hard and has this strange flavor.
We also tried the cashew chicken and sweet and sour pork also. Those dishes were just OKAY.
Never ordering from here again.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Adam F.GA, GA5958Apr 20, 2010
Cheap crappy Chinese food. You know you love it, even if you don't admit it to your snooty hipster friends on the UES. I know you. You'll order the dumplings, half lying to yourself, "Even if it's not the best, it has to be worth $5 for 8.". By the time you finish yelling your order into your cell phone, over background noise like the restraunt phone is located in the middle of a dance floor, you'll admit that you knew all along what your food will be like. And yet you keep coming back.
But no, really, this time you'll get good Chinese. I mean, you're even reading the Yelp reviews to see if it's any good, right? But after looking at about five places, the lies will start sounding like half-truth again. After all, you're the type who reads reviews of Manhattan Chinese delivery places like you think they're distinguishable from each other by anything other than location.
But anyway, the General Tso's chicken is good enough, and they give you these free dumpling like things with a sour cheese inside. Minimum $8 for delivery (I guess it went up).Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Robert S.New York, NY1411May 12, 2010
with "u like garden" you get a mediocre chinese food restaurant disguised as an accusatory statement about your interest in a garden
this corner situated chinese food restaurant is completely average. the staff was quite nice and portions were good but nothing huge.
price i felt was good and i would recommend watching for coupons. when i ordered i got a great deal because of the coupon on the menu - it couldnt be any easier
vegetarian options are good and you will find many optionsHelpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Kate F.New York, NY26353611Sep 15, 2009First to Review
4 stars for deliciously light but generously large shrimp dumplings that look homemade and come in a plentiful 8 to an order with a spicy, salty, garlicky sauce for dipping. Fast friendly service. A clean restaurant that doesn't dissuade me from thinking of eating in when its crappy out. And, they have fanta.
I haven't ordered anything else, but I far prefer the dumplings here to East Dumplings on 106 7 B'Way. And if you can fulfill my dumpling craving, then you get 4 stars.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Amanda D.New York, NY86139Nov 27, 2009
Big ups to this UWS/Manhattan Valley Chinese restaurant for joining Seamless Web. While quite a few of my neighborhood restaurants participate on the site, U Like Garden has a low $6.00 minimum for delivery. I tip extra for that convenience!
Most Chinese delivery food generally has the same bland taste, I've noticed, but U Like Garden does have a couple of stand-out items. I enjoy the moo goo gai pan (I order it a little spicy) and the kung pao chicken was decent.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
