8 reviews for Tybee Island Lighthouse & Museum
A beautiful Lighthouse that is extremely distinctive. It's hard to mistake it for any other. At 154 feet tall it is the tallest and also the oldest light in Ga. There were four other lights that have stood on this site, the first one built in 1736, and the present one completed in 1867.
The great part is that you are allowed to climb to the top of the tower. With 178 steps in is a puffer of a climb but well worth the effort since the views on top are spectacular. It has a huge first order Fresnel lens and all the original buildings around the light are still standing.
There also have a little Museum with some great old pictures and the staff are willing and able to answer any questions you might have. A little gift shop is also on site and I ended up buying several t-shirts and a Harbor Lights replica of the Tybee Island Lighthouse. A nice place to lighten your wallet with unnecessary but really cool lighthouse souvenirs.
I believe the price to get in is now 7 dollars which is not really bad considering how great this place is. In fact the whole area around the lighthouse is pretty cool. If you have the time to just visit one Ga. lighthouse, this is the one.

The previous review sums it up pretty good. Look out for the toothless sharky employees running the parking lot. I know the dude working outside took my husband's GPS out of the car when we were in the lighthouse. Jason had hidden it and that parking guy was the only person who could've known. A verbal confrontation ensued after my husband asked if the parking attendant had seen anyone near. STAY AWAY UNLESS YOU ENJOY BEING ROBBED AND THEN ACCOSTED!

This was a fun place to go to while on Tybee Island. The beach and the lighthouse were the main reasons we went to Tybee from Savannah.
It was not really hard to find but there should be more signs off the main road.
The lighthouse has really cool history and was well preserved and displayed for visitors. The lighthouse is clearly not wheelchair friendly since there are 178 steps to climb to get to the top. There are several landings to stop to catch your breath and get a photo from the window. Upon having your heart attack reaching the top you can enjoy the 360 views from the top of the light house. Great for panoramic photos.
After we went to the top of the lighthouse we went to the 2nd assistant's cottage to view a movie about the history of the lighthouse and the island. The narrator was kinda annoying but luckiy her part was limited.
We then went into the lighthouse keeper's house which was perserved to the 1930-40's.
The barcade was also included in the admission to the lighthouse so we walked across the road and went there. Overall that was interesting because it also explained the history of the forts and island. There were several exhibits to look at, such as the plans for the baracde, the amusement park life on the beach, battles that the fort, etc. The fort, again not wheelchair friendly, was in good condition and well lit.
I dont suggest the lighthouse to anyone who has problems going up a large quantity of stairs. Yes you can stop at a number of but there is no seating there- so you can just pant and get your breath leaning again the wall.

What, no elevator? Expect me to climb a thousand stairs? Do you have a defibrillator nearby?
I thought $6 per person was a little steep for the museum and lighthouse. To get the entire family in there... not worth it. We walked through the gift shop, bought a postcard for 35 cents, looked at it for a few minutes and left.

Ok, so here is the thing... My sister and I went to see the ocean, which she has never seen. I was looking for somewhere to park and we pulled into the Lighthouse parking lot. The attendant told us there is no beach parking there. I asked him if I could buy a ticket to see the lighthouse and then walk to the beach. He said sure. My sister overheard him saying that he was just telling all of the tourists to park there. I went inside and bought a ticket and the very nice man who worked in the lighthouse said that there is no beach access today because a movie is being filmed there. He said that everyone on the island knew that and he was upset about it. I bought the ticket anyway because the lighthouse gift shop man was very polite and kind. As I was leaving, I rolled down my window and told the parking attendant man that he might not tell people to park there if he knew that there was not any beach access. He raised his voice and told me he wasn't concerned if I wanted to go to the beach or not, that lighthouse was his business. He continued to rant and rave as I drove off.
I am sure the lighthouse is beautiful and the man who works at the gift shop is helpful and nice. The people that they have working at the parking lot are inappropriate, rude and happy to swindle tourists. I can not support a business whose employees have agendas like this.
NO BEACH ACCESS FROM LIGHTHOUSE!!!
Are you ready to climb 178 stone steps? In a continuous spiraling circle? That's what I did when I climbed to the top of the Tybee Light Station on my last visit to this very southern tourist island.
There is history here. You just have to look beneath the surface. Lots of cheap motels and restaurants and tourist traps on this sandy island. Great beaches, but crowded. If you look past all the pastel colors and blinking lights you can find some real treasures - like the Tybee Island Lighthouse and Head Keepers House Museum.
This lighthouse has been operating continuously for 270 years safely directing sailors into the Savannah River.
To climb the stairs, see the renovated Head Keepers House and view the entire island just buy your ticket - it only $6 for all this. It is worth it for the view. It's cool inside no matter how hot it is outside. You won't be disappointed . . . but you may be a little exhausted . . . and dizzy!
The largest lighthouse in Georgia.. Yes I had to climb to the top.. and only then did I realize that I had a fear of heights! Go figure! the climb to the top isn't that bad but once you step out onto the landing part at the top of the lighthouse there is not much space at all (so if your afraid of heights this might not be fore you) although I was paralyzed with fear the view from the top is beautiful and overlooks the Atlantic ocean! a definite go to while on Tybee Island.

Worth the meager wonder through the residential area to find this beautiful lighthouse. What wasn't so great was the cost just to enter. REALLY? Everything has to have it's cost I guess. We probably could have just as easily stepped over the white picket fence and entered the lighthouse. It is deffinately worth climbing all 178 stairs to see the view from the top of the lighthouse. Do it! Your legs will hate you, but it's ok. I got fabulous pictures!
