No way! I can't believe I get the honor of being the first to review Ty Gurney Surf School!
When we were planning our honeymoon, the only thing my then fiance could think about was surfing. I on the other hand, wasn't so thrilled about the idea. If you know anything about me, you know I'm athletically challenged. I'm a big klutz with zero coordination and I'm very accident prone. Never the less, I decided for my husband's sake to be brave and give it a shot.
I arranged our surf lesson through the concierge at our hotel (Trump International Hotel & Tower Waikiki Beachwalk) for the very next day. It was $75 per person for a one hour, semi-private lesson, semi-private meaning it was just the two of us. The surf school is conveniently located just two blocks from the hotel.
We showed up in our own rash guards, but they will let you borrow one of theirs if you don't happen to have your own. The staff that checked us in were super friendly and excited for us to have our very first lesson. We were then instructed to leave all of the stuff we brought with us there. I had a giant beach bag full of towels, sunscreen, flip flops, sunglasses, etc. They make you leave it at the store because it will get stolen otherwise, yes, even your shoes! Then they walked us barefoot to the beach a block away.
That's where we met Ty Gurney himself, who we were going to be lucky enough to have as our surf instructor for the day. He was was an awesome and fun teacher. We had a quick 5 minute lesson on the beach, going through the 3 or 4 motions it takes to get up on a surfboard and then we were in the water. The waves at outrigger beach were perfect for us newbies that afternoon. My husband, rock star that he is, stood up on his very first attempt! I ate it a couple of times but then I too managed to catch some waves. No one could more surprised at that than me. Ty was out there guiding us the whole time. He told us when exactly to start paddling, and then he would yell, "stand up" when it was time for us to make our move. He was super nice and gave us pointers on stance and position on the board. We had the greatest time and its still one of the fondest memories we have of our honeymoon.
As an added bonus, they partner with this production company that films your adventure the whole time. Every attempt, every wipe-out, every crowning success you have out on the ocean, captured for you in both still picture and live video format. Definitely the best souvenir we brought home.

Meet the Business Owner: Ty Gurney G.
Ty Gurney surfed his first wave at 4 years of age, and won his first contest on Hawaii's North Shore at the junior age of 7. This was just the foundation of Ty's extensive surfing journey, which has led him around the globe to surf professionally. A former camp counselor, Ty's passions and patience allow him to teach at all levels. Safety is also his utmost concern due to his experience in the Emergency Room and from working as a paramedic for eight years in San Diego. Ty is a certified life guard in the state of Hawaii, as well as one of the only blue card instructors for both Oahu's North and South Shore. His reputation and unique style of surfing is well known amongst the surfing elite on the island.
Ty strongly believes everyone can surf and is fanatical about his students surfing the 'real' waves. Ty is well known for his sense of humour and engaging personality, which is why he is the most popular instructor on the island, and on the speed dial of many celebrities.
