I'm just not feeling this place. The food was ok, as was the service but I don't feel it warrants the raves it has received around the web. The decor was kinda drab, though it is not intended to be a flashy kinda place. I just felt like I was eating at the home of a very elderly lady.

The breakfast was AWESOME!! Eugy and I stopped off here before heading up to Hog's Island. I had french toast with fruit, grits with cheese and 1 scrambled egg with cheese. The grits were great! Yes, I have to admit, they make better grits than me.

The service was good and the girl was really polite. Gotta come back here for lunch!

Excellent pumpkin pancakes :-)

Grits - I'm from the south, so these have to be right, and they know how to make them here!

I love the feeling of this place - very simply, homey, unpretentious.  Give it a try for some tasty pumpkin pancakes!

Three stars for service.  The joint seems very homey with a family run vibe...everyone is super friendly and warm.

The food is just ok.  The pancakes are amazing!  But besides that, just average.  The toast is wonderbread...the homefries are nothing special.  The menu makes a big deal of the bacon and sausage that they offered but they seemed very processed and weren't flavorful.  Coffee was a little weak.

I'd go back but JUST for the pancakes.

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for 3 years- and it is simply the best breakfast place I've been to in The City.

I get the "Half and Half" pancakes- which is one pumpkin and one buttermilk- with fruit and powdered sugar on top and between- seriously, these are the only pancakes I EVER finish.   J's are amazing.

Service- quick, friendly and efficient.  Laura, the owner comes out into the dining room every so often to greet people and make sure everything is a-ok.

One day we got lunch, and it too was terrific- yummy meatloaf with fresh mushrooms, gravy with lots of flavor and I can't even type rationally about the mashed potatoes!  You can also get a side of sweet potatoes:  they are sliced and not mushy, with cinnamon and nutmeg!  Oh, they are SOOO good.

Any day we can come to J's is a good day!  And for those very few negative reviews- I have no idea what their problem is, I have experienced nothing of the sort... They have always done right by us.

What a pleasant surprise tucked away off the Octavia corridor! I've often checked this place out when coming off the freeway, but didn't really get what it was about since it was never open when I'd look over there. Turns out there's a reason for that - it's a breakfast/brunch joint only, and I apparently was only looking during dinner hour.

The service is friendly and welcoming - definitely feels family-run. The food is delicious - these are the best pancakes I've had in San Francisco (without the wait - thank you very much, Mama's). I just got the traditional buttermilk, which were perfectly crisped just around the edges, and delightfully fluffy throughout. The hot syrup and butter served alongside is the perfect pairing for this simple delight. I tried the signature pumpkin pancakes, which my husband ordered - also delicious. But make sure you're in the mood for a pretty heavy pumpkin flavor - it's not subtle.

The accompaniments were great as well - varieties of sausage, home fried potatoes, bacon...you name it. If you're sick of frou-frou SF brunch places, you'll love it here. But if you must have ambiance, this may not be your place - while charming with framed art and photos and a table full of magazines to entertain you while you wait for your food, it could stand a face-lift (old carpet, dingy walls). I, however, am more than happy to lose a little fluff for food this good and service with a smile!

My fiance and I visited San Francisco a few years back and this was one of the breakfast spots recommended to us by someone online.

A very memorable place that we still talk about today! Loved the eclectic mix of coffee mugs (reminded me of my parent's home). I remember it being a smaller place with newspapers available to read and just one woman waiting on tables who was just fantastic.

The omelets were the best I've ever eaten. They were so fluffy and creamy. I was so inspired by the texture that I've tried numerous recipes to recreate the awesomeness, but have barely come close.

Can't wait to visit the city again and grab another dreamy omelet here. Although after reading all the reviews, maybe I'll try the pumpkin pancakes!

When I first met my wife, she lived in San Francisco about 4 blocks from J's pots of soul. I would fly down from Portland once or twice a month to see and to eat breakfast at J's.  Everything about J's pots of soul is just how I want it. It has an aged look to it. Everyone is so nice. I miss standing outside on a chilly morning watching everyone eat while we waited for a table. The food is spectacular. This could be blamed on my new blossoming love, but I will stick with spectacular. Like it has been said, the pancakes are delicious.  The bacon was thick cut and cooked to perfection, and I loved all the paintings and photos on the walls. Please eat here. It will make your belly happy.

This is gonna sound weird but I really miss awkward Saturday morning wake up conversations with a stranger who looked completely different the night before at the bar.  You know what I'm talking about.......You want to somehow suggest morning sex as an option to be explored but you totally have to fart and don't want to get out of bed cause your naked and the sun is up.  So you lie there in pain but still quite horny while you both don't really say anything and then in your moment of brilliance you say......

I've got half a burrito in the fridge.....

........

........

Its carne asada I think......

.........

............

Ah..no morning sex for you Mr. Carne Asada suave player man.  Enter J's Pots of Soul.  Rather than stumble over rhetoric concerning half eaten slow cooked pork you suggest the two of you get some Pumpkin Pancakes.  Morning sex commences, everyone looks good naked, and 15 months later you're married with a kid.  Magic Pancakes I tell you.

True Story.

A breakfast joint in my hometown served the most amazing pumpkin pancakes from October to December. For some reason, they determined that people lost their taste for cinnamon-y, pumpkin-y, cake-y delights as soon as the holiday season passed.

J's  has come to the awesome realization that PUMPKIN PANCAKES ARE DELICIOUS AT ANY TIME OF YEAR. And fortunately, their pumpkin pancakes are some of the best I have ever had - light, perfectly cooked, perfectly moist. I was amazed that three of us ate for around $30 and had so much food we could barely finish it - stacks of pancakes (pumpkin and plain), eggs, bacon, sausage. Only complaint was that the hub's scrambled eggs were a little undercooked, so next time we'll stick to sunny side up...otherwise, great service and delicious food on a lazy Sunday morning.

Oh mannnn, I totally ordered the wrong thing when I got here.  I love omelettes, so I got the smoked ham and cheese.  Yes, it was damn tasty, but what my breakfastmate ordered was truly magic.  He ordered like, the "everything plate".  It was loaded up with sausage, bacon, eggs, toast, homefries, AND PANCAKES.  The pancakes were amazing.  He ordered the infamous pumpkin ones.  Ya, I definitely ordered the wrong thing, and I will definitely be back.
Bring cash!  They don't accept plastic.

I just ate here this past weekend. My best friend Luiz used to cook here. I never thought that they'd find another good cook but not so. The cook was AwEsOmE! I ate pork chops, eggs, potatos and pancakes. Everything taste very good and nothing was greasy. I'll eat here again and again and whenever i'm in The City. Plus the owner Laura is very friendly, as is her sister DeeDee and the rest of the staff. Great food, great place to eat.

The food was nothing to write home about, the prices weren't even that great, and the service could have been better.  They were nice enough people but I never even get my english muffin and my girlfriend's order came about 5 minutes after mine.  This is certainly no dottie's but at least you won't wait in line for this place, but then again you would be silly to do so.

I am glad I tried something new in the area but I wouldn't ever go back.  Oh yeah, don't go in back to the restroom because you will see their nasty kitchen and storage area... kinda scary!

I can't believe all the great reviews...or maybe the kitchen was seriously off the morning I went for breakfast this past weekend with a friend.  I ordered the cheese omelet...big mistake. It was bland, rubbery -- oh, and the piece of Kraft sliced cheese they tucked in there wasn't hot or melted.  I ordered pan sausage on the side, which was really salty.  My friend had the pancakes.  She seemed more happy with her order than I was, but not super impressed.

Great spot without the normal Sunday Brunch crowds.

I do there around 1130 and there was no wait for us to sit down but as the time went on, the list hung on the back of the door quickly got longer.

The pumpkin pancakes were amazing as were the buttermilk (had to try both). I also enjoyed the home fries which were cooked with peppers and onions. This was also one of the first places I've had good grits in San Francisco -  took me back to my Southern roots.

They are not the fastest place I've ever been to but well worth the wait while you drink coffee out of a unique mug in an eclectic place...

Enjoy!

You're going to leave this place 5 pounds heavier, and two weeks closer to a heart attack.  But worth it.

I loved our waiter.  He sat down with us to take our order, but not in any over the top cheezy kind of jackass way.  It was a genuine, let me sit and flirt with you two hot chicks real quick kind of way.  Cute.  He even made us a fruit salad for us.  Out of the goodness of his heart.  And a bigger tip.

Do NOT come here if you are on a diet, but if you have some extra space in your arteries, check it out.  The pumpkin pancakes are super yum.

Sometimes I think I give 5 *'s much too freely but in this case J's really really freakin' deserves it!

I had their pumpkin pancakes and let me tell you what...when they brought them to our table my mouth was salivating like you wouldn't believe. I could have sat there and just sniffed them all day, but eventually the need to scarf took over and I couldn't take it anymore.

The pancakes were heaven!!! Light and fluffy and oh so tasty! They even give you a little carafe of melted butter to drench them with. The cakes come with two eggs and your choice of delicious spicy or chicken apple sausage, I went for the latter--YUM!!!!

OH AND THEY SERVE BREAKFAST ALL THE DAY LONG!

Oatmeal? come one, you can make that at home....

Went there this morning for brunch.  Such a great find.  While Zuppenkuche,  and Stacks have huge lines, the wait was about 10 minutes.  I think the seating could be a little more efficientbut  the food and decor make up for any inefficiencies.

I had the number three, and my brunch mate had the Grits. While she wasn't to impressed with the grits (Who orders grits?) I was blown away by the pumpkin pancakes. I'm glad I did a little research before I went in there (thank you Yelp) because they were exactly how people described them.

Gotta love the pictures of Mohamed Ali on the walls, and the shrine to the SF Giants in the corner.

The little old lady chef came out and walked around to each table asking people how their meals were.

We ordered the Hush Puppies, which I honestly wasn't impressed with, they were good, but the orange butter seemed to really clash with the herbs that they used.

Great Brunch.

I love the mama there. She's so incredibly nice and chill. Maybe a little too chill on a day when there's no one else besides me there, at around 11:00 that it took about 25 minutes to make my oatmeal.

The french toast was very nice, but didn't blow my mind. Though I was happy to get something that's very hearty, with good ingredients, non of those fancy artificial shit.

The oatmeal took a long time to make, but it was exactly what I was looking for. It has the right consistancy, not too watery, not too thick, served hot but can be balanced out by the cold milk. Some brown sugar, raisins, and banana slices. Exactly what I needed that day, when I didn't feel like paying $7.00 for my oatmeal at stacks but had no time to make it at home.

Funky location and setting, but a neighborhood cafe that serves some hearty homemade food, and lots of magazines, I'l definitely come back.

Have you ever had a pancake that was like the equivalent of a deflated whoopee cushion?  I HAVE.  And it near scarred me for life.  I chewed that rubber sole disguised as breakfast food for at least thirty seconds before giving up and discarding it in my napkin.  And I don't give up food easily, as you know...although my waistline wishes I would.  FOOD!  I WISH I COULD QUIT YOU!

So understandably, I am disillusioned by pancakes in general now.  I have been jaded by a floppy flap jack.  So sad.

But J's Pots of Soul offered up the PERFECT pancake.  And when I mean perfect I mean it was full of fluffy love, and smothered in world peace.  It was the best pancake this side of planet Earth.

Yes, I'm exaggerating.  But seriously, I ate three and wanted to hug the waitress.  My cupcake addiction may have been replaced the day I ate at J's Pots of Soul.

Get ready for pancake avatars.  CUPCAKES BE DAMNED!!

OMG, you know I'm kidding.  Get real.

My brother and I came here Saturday for brunch and it was delicious! I ordered the Spanish omelet and my brother had the #3. (I actually really wanted #3, but since my lil brother wanted it, I decided to go for the omelet).

#3 consists of savory and sweet. 2 pancakes of your choice, 2 eggs, and chicken apple sausage or bacon. The pancakes were outstanding!! We had one pumpkin and one plain. They were topped with powder sugar and bananas. It was so fluffy and moist. YUMMY!

The Spanish omelet was made with mushrooms, peppers, onions and salsa. It was good, but I thought there were too many onions. I had it with a side of sides and English muffin. The portions were huge!!!

Since our eyes are always bigger than our stomachs, we also tried the hush puppies. They were HUGE!! 6 large hush puppies deep fried to a crisp. Maybe because I'm not a huge fan of hush puppies, but I didn't think they were OK.

Overall, I would highly recommend coming here if you're a pancake fan.

Interesting location.  It's like you are in someone's house....kinda cozy.  The people are nice.  If you go alone, they have newspapers and such for you to browse while eating.

I ordered the french toast.  It was good, nothing out of the ordinary though.  The hush puppies were a bit dry for my taste, but I'm not sure if that's how they are supposed to be????

I'm glad I went once, but I doubt I will go again.

My roommate and I avoided this place (literally around the corner from our apartment) for a few months because we feared it looked like a health code violation (it kind of is a hole in the wall), but what a delicious little hole in the wall! A perfect place for some old-fashioned, artery clogging, delicious (hangover?) breakfast. The menu is reasonably small so you don't have to dwell too much on your choice (some egg options, french toast, pancakes - the necessities are there), but whatever I have tried has been super. Pricing is also totally reasonable. A way better and more homey selection for a breakfast than the overrated Stacks a few blocks north, though don't let too many people in on the secret!

Dahlin' breakfast place with the perfect portion and morning kitchen ambiance. I love the lady who runs the place. She takes care of me the way how my cool childhood friends' moms take care of the hyper kids, the morning after a crazy slumber party.

There's the warm breakfast waiting for me, to kick start my day. Coffee in any random mismatched mug. I always scan the room to see who has which interesting mug. And you can order pumpkin pancakes anytime during the year, in season or not.

BTW, cash only. J's beats out Stacks (just down the block) any day!

This hole in the wall of a breakfast joint is a certainly a unique place.  Walk in at the wrong time, and you might be confused by the fact that there the dining room contains a few tables and chairs, but no podium for the host/hostess or any other indication on what to do if there are no wait staff in sight.  This is what happened to me the first time I came in, and I must have looked confused because someone quickly told me that turn over was fast and that I should just wait for a table to open up.  I took my leave outside and stood watch for some people to get up.

The menu is simple, limited just to the important stuff: eggs, grits, pancakes, french toast, bacon, sausage, omelets, fruit and breakfast drinks (juices, coffee, milk, tea).  You won't find complex combinations of fanciful items, nor will you find 'tofu' or 'healthy' anywhere on the menu.  This is a nice, Southern (yes, with a capital 'S') breakfast place.  Having lived in the south for four years, I can tell you the only thing that I really noticed missing, was the presence of a sugar coated greeting by the staff (sweety, honey, etc).

The simplicity of everything was refreshing.  I got grits, bacon, and fried eggs (sunny side up, of course), my partner got pumpkin pancakes, scrambled eggs, ans sausage patties.  Overall, I was pretty impressed.  The grits were very good, a rarity north of the Mason-Dixon line and west of Louisiana.  My eggs were very good as well, with plenty of yoke ready to dip my buttered English muffins in.  Mmm.  Bacon was thick cut, a little fatty for my tastes, but good nonetheless.  The sausage I tried from my parter was good as well.  I sampled the pancakes too, which were light and fluffy, but a bit more hearty than your typical flapjacks thanks to the use of whole wheat flour as opposed to bleached white flour (I presume).

When all was said and done, our plates were clean, our bellies were full, and our cholesterol levels were definitely a few points higher.  It was a good proper breakfast though, simple, tasty, and swimming in buttery goodness.

Definitely worth a trip to when you are in the mood for BREAKFAST, not just a meal to start the day.

I just couldn't bike home fast enough to Yelp about this place - mostly because I stuffed myself so much I could barely bike at all! So here it is: 6 pieces of French toast, 2 poached, 6 huge fried chicken wings (It's the real deal, folks!) 3 hush puppies, half a pumpkin pancake (delish!) and a few spoonfuls of what could be "the best, most authentic grits in San Francisco," according to Ben C. This place is a hidden gem, so check it out before word gets out.

I LOVE San Francisco during the holidays!  Everyone is away and there's street parking galore and places that usually have long waits are suddenly wide open, which explains why we were able to waltz into J's Pots of Soul on a Saturday morning and be seated immediately for breakfast.   I had the French toast with bacon - so good!

The only negative thing I can really say is that it was very drafty.  I kept my coat on throughout the whole meal and I noticed other patrons doing the same.  But this place deserves its five stars due to the outstanding service.  The waitress was very sweet and the waiter guy was beyond charming.

A delicious neighborhood spot that hits the lazy-weekend-morning-brunch category just right.  I had the mega-sampler plate with pretty much one or two of everything they make, and was pleased with all elements.  The sausage patties are particularly good, as are the pumpkin pancakes.  Very cozy - only 8 or 10 tables, and the rather animated waiter sat down at our table with us while he took our order.

Wish the menu was a little bigger/more varied, but otherwise spot on.

I had been saving J's for a morning I didn't think it would be too busy, and when I was in need of calorie replenishment. Today, the Super Bowl took care of the former, and Miguel Migs at Mighty last night took care of the latter. Imagine my surprise that it wasn't nearly as greasy as expected. I went with the delicious cinnamon french toast, topped with fresh fruit, and my brunch companion enjoyed her huge spanish omelet.

Service was friendly, dishes were served up fast and the price can't be beat ($7 - $10 per dish).

Great place for breakfast.  Pancakes, eggs, potatoes.  Absolutely delicious.  Friendly service and decent prices.

Can't wait to go back again.

Can I get that omelet with cheddar?
Nope, all we have is American cheese.

Can I get some butter?
Nope, all we have is margarine.

Kick up the ingredient quality just a notch Jay's and I'll try it again.

Ta Dah! I am from the rural mid-atlantic and this is the first place in California where I've had breakfast out like how I know breakfast out. These are the components: morning newspaper available, sausage patties, a combo menu, welch's jelly in plastic packages, weak coffee, grits. The price is $8 a combo and $1.75 a cup of coffee. I remember breakfast being cheaper on the east coast, but you know, let bygones be bygones.
They only have about 8 to 10 tables (always nice to see), the service is friendly and the food came out timed just right, slipped behind my face full of newspaper. The food had that great diner taste too, and I just can't duplicate that in my own kitchen. My nostalgia for the east coast's highway side diners was sated alongside our overly cute, little bike laned San Francisco highway- Octavia Blvd.

Would it be too much to ask Aretha Franklin...I mean Mrs. Murphy...to come out of the kitchen?...Uh-oh, here she comes, I better wear my porkpie hat and sunglasses...

ME: "Ma'am, I'm on a mission from God."
REE: "Don't you blaspheme in here! Don't you blaspheme in here! This is my restaurant, and you are gonna turn around and walk right out of here - without your dry white toast and without your four fried chickens!"

OK, maybe I'm mixing up "The Blues Brothers" with my virginal visit to J's, but hey, I love that silly movie. I have been wanting to come here a long time because despite my veneer of cosmopolitan pretense, I likes me some hearty soul food. I lived a long time in Oakland and went to school in the south side of Chicago, so don't tell me I don't knows my grits.

I was always wary of the weekend crowds for breakfast, so I took advantage of a free weekday to walk over to Octavia and try it out. It's a small place, tiny really...seven tables and a bench, I think. Yesterday, just a tad past noon, only three were occupied, so I had a choice seat next to the front window. They were highlighting their three $10.25 Lunch Specials - fried chicken wings, meat loaf and salmon croquettes - which came with two sides and a cornbread muffin.

While that all sounded good, I was in the mood for one of their breakfasts, so I went for the $7.95 Spanish Omelette, which came stuffed with mushrooms, onions, peppers and salsa (see photo). For an extra dollar, I asked for their home fries instead of the standard rice or grits. A wise decision since they were incredible - huge, pan-roasted slices of russet potatoes tossed together with bell peppers and onions. An English muffin is all the starch I could handle with that meal.

The service was super-friendly with Laura, the ebullient owner, coming out and chatting with all of us to make sure we all felt good and satisfied. The waitress was equally attentive with lots of coffee refills. There were regulars there because they seem to know what's going on with their lives. It's hard to find such a homespun place with good food in this often cold city, but I think I'll need to come back and try those legendary pumpkin pancakes soon 'cause....

"You better think, think about what you're trying to do to me
Yeah, think (think, think), let your mind go, let yourself be free...
Oh freedom (freedom), freedom (freedom), freedom, yeah freedom!
Freedom (freedom), freedom (freedom), freedom, ooh freedom!!"

FOOD - 4 stars...hearty home-style food courtesy of Miss Laura
AMBIANCE - 4 stars...like her living room but you better think (think, think) 'cause it gets crowded fast
SERVICE - 5 stars...nicest and most authentic in the city...easily
TOTAL - 4 stars...them pumpkin pancakes may move me to five the next time

Very very overrated. The service could have been a lot better. I had to get up and waive to the kitchen 3 times just to get the attention of this flighty Tia Carrere wannabe of a waitress that I got stuck with.
Their claim to being a southern food place is questionable at best. Their menu is so limited that it's tough to evaluate recipes, or consistency. Not to mention that I met the owner and she's not even Southern. I know that shouldn't be a requirement, but I don't know... I just pay attention to stuff like this.
Their meatloaf recipe is bland, so are their mashed potatoes. And who the heck came up with the idea to put so much tahini sauce in the corn bread? I asked the owner if they make any Southern cuisine staples like chicken fried steak, biscuits, banana pudding, fried catfish.... "No, no, no and no"!! Their peach cobbler was fresh out of the microwave and very bland. Overall, nothing really horrible about this place, but I would hardly call it a real Southern/Soul Food restaurant. Their breakfast is good and not too expensive, but again... nothing too Southern  about it except for the instant grits they serve. And as we all know, "No self-respecting Southerner uses Instant Grits" (quote from "My Cousin Vinny"). Their decor is nice, the owner is cool; hopefully she'll hire an expert Southern cook soon and a new wait staff.

Decent taste, portions and quality for the price but nothing was that great - even the pumpkin pancakes.  The one stand out for me was that the scrambled eggs were perfectly cooked.  Service was attentive and friendly.  I liked being able to flip through a good selection of the latest fashion mags.  We were one of two tables in the whole place at 9:30 on Saturday morning, so I was a little worried that Yelp had put some community hex on the place.  As we left, three other parties came in so we were just early birds.  Ok, so now we've been there, done that.  Next?
