What did I love about Twisted Root?

Awesome atmosphere (great music, fun people, great decorations).
Variety of specialty burgers (hello bison, venison, ostrich, alligator, turkey, and veggie!), hot dogs, and the best fried sides (I heart fried pickles).
Huge topping list.
Homemade side sauces.
Beer, wine, AND liquor.
Fresh-spun cotton candy and milkshakes.
Watermelon sweet tea. (I thought it would be disgusting, it was actually really good)

The ONLY reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that my burger wasn't actually anything special. Don't get me wrong, it was good... but it was overdone and they didn't ask me how I wanted it cooked. :( My onion strings were fabulous, and my buddy's "buffison" burger with fried green beans looked great as well.

I highly recommend it and I will definitely go back!

A friend of ours is a huge fan of Twisted Root and goes there on a regular basis. He's raved about it so much that we had to go see what all the fuss was about. As others have said, there are two ordering lines: one for dessert and alcohol, one for regular food and drink. They give you a card after you place your order, which has the name of some famous person on it, and that's the name they call when your order is ready. (We got MC Hammer.) I thought it was a cute idea, and it was always fun to hear the other names that people got.

This place is mostly famous for making their own root beer. They always have two flavors: the regular root beer, and a flavored one that changes daily. They had vanilla root beer on our night. It was very sweet, too much for me, so I went with the regular. It was about on par with IBC quality, very tasty.

I ordered a garlic mushroom and swiss burger, which I recommend. The seasoning on the mushrooms is fantastic and they were wonderfully juicy, but that's pretty much all I tasted. Therefore, I can't be sure that the burger meat itself is all that remarkable. They cook their burgers medium well, which is a little too done for my taste. A step above that, and you may as well have burned the burger. For the sides, we ordered the Fried Ride so we could sample a little bit of everything. They were out of sweet potato chips on our night unfortunately, but we had the chance to try everything else. The fries could've used a little more seasoning, but good overall. I didn't try the fried pickles, but my husband didn't care for them (just personal taste) because the frying process sucks all the juice out of the pickles - which is why he likes them. I'd heard so much about the fried green beans, but actually thought they tasted a little...overcooked? I couldn't tell if it was just the batter I didn't like, or if they genuinely did cook it too long. I'll have to order them again next time to be sure.

Everything made for a tasty meal, but I was a little disappointed given all the buzz I'd heard about TRBC. I also think it's waaaay too expensive. Two burgers, one large side, and two sodas came to $30! I'd go again, but will continue my quest to find the perfect gourmet burger.

I'm a huge Twisted Root fan.  My in laws live out in Roanoke and I was extremely excited to see a new one open up.

However, since the Roanoke one has been open, they don't ever seem to be stocked on their exotic meats (elk, gator, buffalo) that make it unique.  This makes the Roanoke Twisted Root "just another expensive hamburger joint."

My advice is to call first and check to see if they're out of anything.  Don't call during busy hours, as they won't answer the phone.  But for a unique, tasty burger, always opt for the one downtown, where the owner is always there.

You've got to know a few things before you go: First, if you go on a weekend night, it may take :30 to get through the lines. Considering it is counter-service and they're only grilling burgers, they are glacierly slow (is that a word?).

There are two lines: The longer line is for the burger. There is also a second line for the bar. If you are a drinker, you should probably get a bucket or pitcher of margaritas while you wait in line. It is entirely possible to finish both while you wait. The buckets of 5 are $15 and the pitchers of margaritas are $15.

The margs were kinda sad. They had plenty of tequila in them and they tasted like margaritas, don't get me wrong. I just didn't care for the consistency. Maybe I'm low-brow, but I like my margs from a machine. Granted, I love 1) Patron, 2) lime juice, and 3) Gran Mariner, but when I want frozen, I go Idiocracy and I want Slurply-style goodness. Don't give me blender crap. Unfortunately, Twisted Root uses a pre-mixed tequila and sweet and sour rocks mix, throws in some shaved ice, and calls in "snowball style." It is ridiculous because the cash flow this place has, they can afford to buy a machine. Meh, totally disappointed.

The burgers are good *if* you get one that is totally dressed with cheese, onions, bacon, or whatever extra toppings you like. If you go dry, or go with just lettuce-tomato-onion, you will be underwhelmed. You'll get one skimpy romaine leaf, a slice of plain ol' white onion, and one tomato slice. The buns are forgettable, and the meat is all med-well done, so it really, really needs some help with extras. And always go for the sweet potato chips. I think they're dusted with brown sugar they are so sweet.

I was really excited to hear about Twisted Root opening in Roanoke for two reasons:
A) Roanoke was desperately in need of a boost and something new in town that wasn't a chain
2) Everyone said that Twisted Root was great!

Unfortunately, I can't say that I was impressed. The first time the husband and I attempted to go we were thwarted by a water main break and the place was closed down. Totally not their fault, but still a bummer.

So last night we made a second trip out and were happy to find the place wasn't packed. We both got cheeseburgers. Mine with a side of the curly fries and the hubs got a side of onion strings. We moseyed up to the soda fountain and the first of my disappointments was discovered. Their root beer is fountain? Why did I think it was going to be on tap, like a nice beer? Not only that, but I tried out their specialty root beer which was supposed to be Irish cream and there was nothing Irish about it. It was slightly creamier than the regular. Slightly.

We sat and waited for our meals. In the meantime some dorky high school aged kid came to our table and told us he was a magician that goes around to restaurants in the area and does some tricks. Wow kid, really? I'm here to eat a burger, not be entertained by card tricks. But I was polite and said no thanks.

The atmosphere? Cute. I mean it's nice and everything, but it seems like they are trying too hard with their schtick. Their notes about how they are, "Dun run out" of their Coke Zero (really??) or the other one on their tip jar for help with their "401k" plans. If there were adults working behind the counter then maybe, maybe it would have been funny, but it wasn't. It was a bunch of annoying teenagers, most of who shuffled around the place like they had nothing to do, or stood hovering and gossiping at the front. Classy, because nothing says unique burger joint like a bunch of useless teens screaming "Lt. Dangle YOUR ORDER IS READY" at the top of their lungs. Note: An amplifier amplifies sound, therefore you can speak normally and yes, the patrons will hear you. This was highly obnoxious the whole time we were there.

Our food was finally called and we dove in. The burger was definitely thick and juicy. So big that I couldn't even finish the whole thing. I used some of their horseradish Dijon, but can't say that I actually tasted anything spicy. Their BBQ sauce that I tried was tasty, but their ancho ketchup was amazing. I really liked that on my already seasoned fries. My husbands onion strings were good and my fries were OK. They weren't overly greasy, which was nice, but honestly? They tasted like something I could pick up at a fast food joint or even in the frozen section of the grocery store.

After all is said and done, I would like to come back and try one of their game burgers, but really, this place isn't anything special. Which is kind of a let down to say the least. However, I should have known that with three locations under their belt now, there weren't going to be any chefs in the kitchen in Roanoke cooking my burger. In fact, I could see myself it was some kid with an apron on.  You can't be that different when you're all over the DFW area.

Wow, word gets around fast.  This place has not even been open a month and it's got five reviews.  I was hoping I was going to be the first because jthe clientel didn't look like Internet users, let alone Yelpers!

This place is in old town Roanoke, right across the street from Babe's.  So if the wait it too long at Babe's, then head over here for some COTTON CANDY (?!?) and snow-cone margaritas.

The original location was just written up as #15 in the Texas Monthly 50 Best Burgers (August 2009).  The world has too many burger places (not counting all of the McD, Wendy's and BK's), but this place stands out in the area.  Southlake has  several different places (Kincaids, Fat Daddy's, Snuffers,  Johnny B's) but this place is unique from them.

You stand in a big line and order your burger with a variety of toppings (they had 3 high-end cheeses, plus all of the usual suspects).  Their sides are unusual - fried green beans (like TGIFriday's) - the french fries were curly and not that special.

They have a "kinda full bar" and a few beers in an ice tub.  I opted for their Tap Root Beer at the soda fountain.  They actually had two flavors of Root Beer (?!?), but I did not like the cararmel flavor as much as the normal one.  They also had yummy watermelon-sweet iced.

There are lots of tabs and the place has plenty of atmosphere.   If you've got some in from out of town, I would not hesitate to take them here for a casual meal.  It's not cheap (we spent $50+ for four people with no alcohol), but the burgers were ever bit as good as what Texas Monthy rated them as.

Also, try the homemade spicy pickles!

Huh--looks like I'm the first to review the new location. Funny: although I live about 6 blocks from the original Deep Ellum location, I only went there for the first time about a week or two ago.

Today I had the occasion to meet some old college friends for lunch in the Keller area and they suggested this place. I had no idea it was the third day of business for them.

First, I'm not docking them any stars due to the horrendous cluster-f condition (as of this writing) of Roanoke's Main Street. It has been completely ripped out and is being replaced so extremely heavy construction is going on everywhere. And this is literally across the street from the fabulous Babe's Chicken.

I ended up parking about a mile away because I didn't want to vulture-circle with the other lunch crowd drivers vying for a lucky parking spot. It was absolutely packed.

Once inside, I met my friends and got in a long, long, loooong line to order. This place is quaint and fun just like the DE location. They've tried to duplicate pretty much everything, it appears, including that awesome Watermelon Tea and Twisted Root Rootbeer. Both awesome here as well. Their chalkboard proclaimed "No Game Meats. Give us a break--its our first day" with "(3rd day, really) chalked in beneath it. That sucked, but I went with their Western burger with standard meat.

Again, I want to talk bad about this place for some reason, but the meat pattie is really, really, really good. If I were low-carbing it and doing it sans bun, it wouldn't be a problem here. The meat is the star of the show. To be honest, I couldn't really tell any difference between the buffalo meat and this, which I hear is a mixture of brisket, sirloin, etc., etc. Whatever the meat mixture, its good.

Love their fried onion straws. Especially like the fact they are considered a topping on several burgers. Gives it a good crunch along with the full onion disc and tomato you automatically get on the side.

It looks like they'll do fine. The line never dwindled the whole time we were eating. For now, try parking at the rear of their building. They have their own lot back there, but if you're approaching from the hated "East" like I was, you'll be hardpressed to find a way over there. Approaching from the West is more convenient. Parking in the series of white rock lots in downtown is like tiptoeing through a tarpit on a few random stones that have been dropped in there without getting any tar on you. Precarious.

Sorry no funny haha comments or disparaging remarks. I will say that as I was walking through the neighborhood after parking, I noticed there are no curbs in Roanoke and one house had proudly hoisted the Confederate-freaking-flag in their front yard. Nice touch 21st century.

Made the trek to Roanoke to try out the place and see if the hype is worth it.

One thing to note, Oak street is under construction so it was kind of a bitch to get to Twisted Root and park.  When we found a parking spot behind the restaurant I saw 2 of the cooks outside smoking.  Also, I got confused because they apparently have a backdoor public entrance  - but I chose to go in the main entrance.

I had no idea what to expect and quickly figured out that you walk up to the counter and place your order...there is no table service here.

We had the Fried Ride (Hand-Cut Sweet Potato Chips, Twisted French Fries, Fried Green Beans, Onion Rings with Chipotle Ranch, Quincy's Spicy Fried Pickles with ranch), Western Burger ( Pepperjack, Bacon, Jalepeño) and the green chilie, guac and pepperjack burger.  We also had 2 drinks and the total was $27.82.

They don't have regular sweet tea, but their watermelon sweet tea is delicious!

We gathered our drinks and made our way outside to sit at a picnic table.  It was way too freakin loud inside that restaurant ~ but it WAS Sunday at lunch time....so...meh.

The process they use to call out the names of the orders was funny at first but annoying very quickly.  Granted, it DOES set them apart from other places...but sheesh...the women screaming into the microphone was at times funny and irritating at others.  My name was HEIDI KLUM, which isn't someone I wanna think about when I'm about to pig out on burgers and fried goodness. LOL!

It seemed to take forever for our food to come out.  BUT - again, it was super busy.  The Fried Ride was awesome!  The sweet potato chips were both sweet and salty..and cinnamon-y!  The pickles and onion rings were OK.  The curly fries tasted like the kind you get at Jack in the box...but the REAL GEM here is the fried green beans. OH EM GEE.  you ***must*** try those!

The burgers were pretty standard.  Buns were boring and not toasted, meat was adequate, toppings were as we ordered them.  One thing you must know is that the burgers DO NOT come with fries or any side.  It's JUST the burger.

All the employees were very nice.  The location was clean and efficient on the inside.  I might be back...but it'll be a while.  Everyone should try it out at least once, though. :)

My wife and I went there two weeks ago after I read some reviews about this place and the story of the owners which was pretty cool.  We got the Western Burger and Turkey Burger which we both enjoyed.  The Fried Ride was pretty tasty as well... we really enjoyed the sampling of all the different items.  Our favorite items were the milkshakes - Banana-Baileys and Vanilla.  These were really put together well and I am going back for the banana-baileys alone.

Overall, I really enjoyed my Western Burger...  the meat was very tender and just melted in my mouth.  The other items gave it a nice kick and mix as well.  You have to try the homemade condiments they are excellent.  The place is a bit expensive, but it is worth giving it a go.  I think that you will enjoy.

right now for me it is all about value an quality. There is little value here unless you consider free soda an tea refills a value. I got a plain hot dog. taste was very good the bun was very very good but for 6 bucks not again. I got a bacon cheese burger. the burger was cold they did have some nice bacon on it an the bread was nice, the burger had a nice season to it but again it was cold. I also got sweet potato chips  they sprinkle brown sugar an cinn. on them not my cup of tea an they were cold as well i prefer salty then sweet my my burger. They do have some spicy pickle that was way good. This place gets top rated by Texas Monthly an Fort Worth Star-Telegram over all not bad, but there is a better Burger in Ponder, TX. a 20 min. past this place they is much better.

Gave Twisted Root a go for lunch today. Had a cheddar burger and twisted fries. The menu said it was 1/2 lb, which I usually struggle to make it through, but this wasn't no 1/2 lb burger. The burger wasn't particularly juicy, and can't say that I loved the taste of the beef. The bun was a little dry, and otherwise unremarkable. Fries were good, although one would hope that if you pay $6.00 for a cheeseburger and $2.00 for some fries that perhaps you'd get a free side of ranch. Not here, folks! We also ordered some onion rings to split, and they were pretty good. Overall, it was a pretty average visit.

Since we live in the neighborhood, we had to try this place.  A Twisted Root in the 'burbs?? Yea!  We ordered the western cheese burger (bacon, jalapenos, onion strings), a regular hamburger and a side of onion strings. Sodas and tea are fountain style. We had the watermelon sweet tea which was the highlight of the lunch. It was like drinking a watermelon snocone mixed with iced tea. Sounds weird, but it worked. As for the food - not bad at all. But not outstanding  either. The meat is pretty good - not too fatty, but juicy and the patties are thick and had a good flavor. The buns and toppings - could have been soooo much better and could have put these burgers into the terrific category. The buns are not toasted and got kinda soggy from the burger juice. Had to peel them off and eat the burgers with a fork. The standard toppings are one slice of grocery store tomato, one tiny lettuce leaf and a slice of onion.  Sonic burgers come with better toppings. The fried onion strings were so-so. Standard frozen breaded onions. Nothing special. The chipotle ketchup was good tho.

They had buckets of beer (5 any kind for $15) which sounded like a good deal. Our burgers, onion strings and 2 fountain drinks came to around $21. Not terribly spendy. Will probably try it again if I'm in a burger mood. Not the best (try Love Shack's dirty burger) but probably the best available in Roanoke/Keller.

We went to Twisted Root at the Roanoke location.  I could not agree more with all of the positive things said about the food and plan to try the entire menu and make many trips back.

However, just to touch on the few things that needs improvement.  The order nicknames thingy is (CUTE) but not very practical.  Numbers work better as they are easier to hear and you can tell the progress of your order based on the last number called.

Listening for your own name is easy as it is a knee jerk response.  But listening for Carrie Bradshaw's name to be called; not so much.   My wife had to tell me who she was and I'm still confused.   I guess the gist is that when they call out Brad Pitts name and the women are suppose to perk up and expect to see Brad.  Then what if Brad ate there?   Would he claim the order for Brad Pitt or Cinderella?

Anyway, the girls calling the order names were having WAY too much fun YELLING the names as they were confusing the microphone with a megaphone. We found that we spent the entire meal having to repeat every sentence twice and covering our ears.  The music was good, but was screwed up by the order calling.  Not pleasant.    I'm looking forward to fall when we can eat outside.

This location is even better than the location in Deep Ellum! It's closer to home and just as delicious. I went with a Cheddar burger and side of sweet potato chips. Definitely use the ancho chile homemade ketchup on your burger. You will not be disappointed. My husband and I also tried the homemade root beer because last time we had watermelon tea, which was to die for. Anyway, the flavors of the root beer were cinnamon and butter pecan, both amazing! We couldn't get enough. I really commend the owners for being so creative. They pay special attention to detail. Twisted Root is really NOT your run of the mill burger joint.........It is perfection and Quincy is hilarious on that mic!

i won't make the journey to deep ellum but i'll make the 10 minute drive to roanoke for the newly opened twisted root burger. hubby and i had lunch here and it wasn't too busy at all. we walked right up and ordered. maybe because it wasn't prime time for lunch.

ive had a craving for a buffalo burger ever since ive tried a pepper crusted one from central market. my hubby orders a cheddar burger plain and dry. my buffalo burger comes with cheddar, grilled, onions, lettuce, and tomato. all veggies are on the side, which i love, since i flip flop on the tomato and amount of onions. the burgers were the perfect size to make you almost regret it. curly fries or onion strings are your side options. the curly fries are seasoned and crisp. they also offer other sauces on the table like chipotle ketchup.

overall, a greasy delicious burger. my hubby had a bite of my buffalo burger and thought it was much better than the regular burger. didn't get to try the shakes...maybe next time. though it'll be hard to fight the temptation of babe's chicken across the street.

I was not impressed with their burgers. Nothing special and lacks taste! The french fries were very average.  We routinely make as good or better burgers at home for far less cost. I like old town Roanoke so we visited TRBC for the location. Ambiance is good and worth a visit once. Nobody seems to be able to beat In'N Out Burgers' DOUBLE-DOUBLE.

Ate lunch at the Twisted Root Burger Company today. It was AWFUL. No sweet potato chips, no bison hamburger, no venison hamburger, the ice machine was broken. Beef hamburger was tasteless - only ate half of it. String fried onions were soggy. Announcement system was terrible - silly names and it sounded like nails on a blackboard. The city of Roanoke certainly wasted tax payers money on supporting this restaurant.

The best thing about this place:  you get the same great product you've come to expect at the Deep Ellum and Richardson stores. The other best thing about thus place is it's located in Roanoke so I don't have to drive all the way to Deep Ellum or Richardson.
