I am prefacing this review with the fact that I am straight.

Twist was my first gay bar experience. From what I've heard, this place used to be THE place to go - line out the door sort of thing. It was not that way when I visited, but that did not detract from my experience. I was there seeing my Auntie Rio who was part of a drag show Saturday night. The place as the other reviewer said is quite small, but I kinda liked it that way.

The main bar area has no cover and is seperate. Full bar menu - you could get dinner here if you wanted.

Side dance area had a $5 cover. There was a bar in there as well, and drinks were served, maybe they have underage nights other times?? My Malibu bay breeze was 6/25, but was huge served in what I would consider a beer glass, not a smaller one I was used to. Yum!

In any event the small crowd that was there was a good group of individuals. Primarily youngish - gay and straight. I felt totally comfortable here - no worries about safety. Music as the website says was techno only, so don't come if you want to dance to hip hop.

They do allow smoking, but all of us who are bothered by smoke, were strangely not bothered in this club, even standing right next to smokers. Perhaps they have good ventilation??

We popped over to the Mohegan Sun casino right next door afterwards making it a good place to stop. Woodlands right up the street offers another alternative.

Awwww. There will always be a soft spot in my heart for Twist. It may be a small, sad little place, but it was the first gay club I ever went to. And who, really, can forget that experience... well, unless you do enough drugs or drink enough gin to black out (which I didn't).

It's one of those joints where they separate the underage dance area from the bar, so it's extremely awkward at times. No dancing in the bar, and then no drinks on the dance floor with the twinks and kiddies. I remember a good number of sketchy predators in that dance room.

This place has the whole small-town gay bar thing going on. Someone should really study all of the behaviors/outbursts and social constructs going on in this place.

    Oh Twist.

History

Established in 1999

For those of you who are not familiar with Twist, we are entering our 12th year serving the gay community. Although we cater to the gay community, Twist has become a melting pot of gay/bi and straight people from all over. Billing ourselves as the original "Alternative Lifestyle" Club, we offer a place where you can be yourself, or be someone else! At times you may have no idea who may be standing next to you. We have had the pleasure of both local and national celebrities visit Twist and having, quote: "The Greatest Time."

A  multi year winner of "Best Alternative Bar/Nightclub" by The Weekender Magazine & Diamond City, we credit our success with a number of things, a few being: a state of the art digital sound system that is second to none and that will rival ANY. And the lighting is a perfect compliment to the music. Speaking of music, you will  hear the most eclectic blend of ALL genres of DANCE spun by the most talented DJ's who will never, like some clubs, "talk over" the music
