Review from Esther H.
A beautiful paper store near Berkley campus, Twig & Fig is a cute stop for greeting cards, stationery gifts, and other writing knick knacks for paper lovers.
I am super crazy about letterpress and Twig & Fig had great selections to choose from with cards ranging from $5+ each. It's the average pricing for a single letterpressed card so I wasn't too surprised by the cost. They offer custom letterpress invitations, business cards, etc which you can see in their next room being pressed by their Heidlberg machine. It's a cool thing to see! An old printing technique still being done today!
The place is small but roomy and the service is very kind.
Worth stopping in after eating at Chez Panisse =D -

Our wedding planner suggested Twig and Fig for our day of stationary for our wedding (menus, signage, escort cards, etc) We met with them late one night (they stayed open late for us, a plus in my book) They had some amazing examples, totally fun and funky and different. If I was planning a wedding every year I would start here to get a fun "theme." But alas...we are only having one wedding, and our "theme" was very traditional, very script-y and scroll-y. I was a little worried after our first meeting, if they were going to be able to back away from the "out of the box" and go directly "in the box" (in a good way!!!) And they delivered!
We did some amazing book programs, they looked just like real books! All with amazing paper and printing and colors. We also had acrylic menus, that were amazing and even though I thought they were not very traditional they went perfectly with our wedding table schemes. They did amazing acrylic place cards with little designs on them to match the table names. We had menus at the bars with amazing mirror frames. It all looked great. We highly recommend Suzie and Twig and Fig. It is pricy but very worth it! -

I'm a wedding planner and searched high and low for a local stationary company because there are none near me. I didn't want to use one of the massive online websites so I happened to stumble upon Twig and Fig in the hopes to create a working relationship for me and my clients.
I decided to use them for my letterpress business cards and stationary. Everything went smooth up until the end when they were suppose to ship my stationary. It was not shipped for several weeks so I called to check in only to find they had forgotten to ship them. After I complained I got a long email from the owner explaining the unfortunate set of circumstances that caused the delay in my shipment. I thought her email was very admirable because it's not easy to admit they made a mistake but Katie made it right. I received my stationary and business cards and they turned out beautifully. I will use Twig and Fig again and I will recommend them to my clients. -

We just picked up our Save the Date cards, and we are very happy! The designers really listened to our ideas, and helped us bring it to life in the best, most affordable way. We will soon have our invitations done, too....can't wait to see them! We had so much fun looking through samples with Susie. There has been ample follow through via email, and careful attention to detail throughout the process. This is especially important for us because we need cards in both English and German, so spelling and grammar needs to be perfect in both languages. Using a letterpress is certainly not the cheapest way to do wedding invitations, but for the quality and the good feeling of supporting a small, local business, it is well worth the money.

Paper places better than Twig and Fig: none.
We had our wedding invitations printed at Twig and Fig, wandered in randomly because of a Groupon we purchased. When we mentioned that we were interested in wedding invitations, Suzie, the owner, said she would show us some samples in the studio.
Not only is the studio this beautiful, tree-house-like room, but Suzie had books and books of incredible, unique, careful invitation samples. Twine-tied wedding announcements, ink pressed precision, paper like fabric, fabric like paper. It was all incredible.
I had a very specific vision for what I wanted for invites - reminiscent of a old green chaulkboard - and Suzie drew it up. She suggested envelopes made of the brown lunch bag paper and even made coasters to match.
I'm not going to lie - it was expensive - but they worked with us in every way to let us know what costs were. In the end, it was so, so worth it - I have a tangible, handmade, personalized piece of my wedding. I love, love, love our invites. We got so many compliments.
Not only that - but Christina, the account manager - was prompt and responsive when we had questions.
Really, I can't say enough good things. Do buy things from Twig and Fig. They are local. They are expert. They are awesome. -

Best. Invitations. Ever.
This place is amazing. Yes, like others have said, it's pricey, but when you're hearing back from your guests that "they were the most beautiful invitations I've ever seen," you forget all about the price. And my fiance and I even chose the "cheapest" kind (like, square-cut, standard envelopes, etc. They have a million ways to cut down the cost). Holly and Christina are GREAT. They are very accessible, and you can tell they enjoy bouncing ideas around. I never felt like they ignored me in the store or responded late to any of my email requests. I see some reviews said they did, but that was not my experience in the slightest.
Honestly, what I liked most about Twig and Fig is just their general style. It's super modern and cool - and you can't really teach cool-ness like that. They just know what colors, designs, wording, and papers go together. I completely trusted them. And they often sneak in extras of things (like envelopes, cards) which I had no idea they were going to do.
To cut down on the price, you can also do some of the invitation with them, and some without them. For instance, we had my fiance's bro do the map to cut down on the price.
So if you're planning to have like 75 invites or less made, I would definitely go to Twig and Fig, because people will ADORE the invites (and you will treasure them always in the custom-made wooden boxes they give you!), but if you've got a 200 - 300 plus person wedding, you may want to go a cheaper route. -
Review from Monica S.
I went to my chamber last night, guided by the light of the flickering candle, and as the wax dripped down the brass holder and onto my leg o'mutton sleeves I ruminated, "what news have I to tell my love!"
I sat at my desk and dipped my feather into ink -- this would for certain be the most deliriously romantic letter of all! But oh! A knock at the door. Fair Walter had come to request an evening with me by the fireside. I obliged him all the while knowing his sinister intentions. His busy conversation deterred me from writing and with little time to spare, I knew I'd have to make haste lest my love depart for the foreign lands of Korea without knowledge of my devotion.
So on my penny-farthing I hopped and hurried through town to Twig & Fig, the local letterpress. I, Mathilda, would certainly know quality when it struck my eye. Hand-pressed cards and stationary abound, inks, pens, journals! What a glorious selection! Lost within the dizzying yet finely curated arrangement of goods my eyes finally settled upon the glistening image of my love. On the front of a wooden card shone the brimming image of none other than Rico Suave. And so it was settled.
It was a meeting of divine inspiration and artistic talent. I drew a stallion and below it the words: "I would sing you a love song, but I'm a little horse."Listed in: East Bay Bizarre, Childhood Stories, Really Cool Stores

My heart goes pitter-patter with all of the cute little designs in this little shop. There's just something so very very tangible about letterpress, and you can find an assortment of great cards, wrapping paper, and stationery that are sure to leave a memorable impression.
My favorite part of looking through their cards was finding several beautiful gay-themed ones that definitely said, these are not your ordinary Hallmark cards. My boyfriend and I grabbed a set to give out for the holidays. A little bit extra to support local businesses who do absolutely wonderful work. -

HURRAY!! After a couple of months of leaving nose prints on their front window (sorry), I was able to pop in during store hours and execute a couple of critical purchases: a perfect Woolbuddy panda for my sister for Christmas (sssshhh...), and a small green owl for me (YEA! now I can live in that 6 x 8 box that is my cubicle.)
This shop is the center for small sanity-saving touchstones.Listed in: Absolute essentials !

Took a friend visiting from out of town to Love at First Bite and wandered across this corner store. They carry lots of cute cards, stationary, and small gifts. Pricy, but worth a visit to check it out.
They even have a printing press on site! Next to the cashiers desk are examples of wedding invitations and business cards. I'd recommend going just to check it out! -

No matter who I have become, I will always be a little bit of a dork/nerd/geek... It was such as a child and as such will it ever be. I have long since grown OK with this fact.
Twig & Fig gives me a great deal of satisfaction. I love receiving handwritten notes because it is a real indicator that someone took the time to pick out a card, craft a message, select a pen/ink color and write the note. I assume others feel the same way and hope that my writing hand written notes brings them the same helping of pleasure.
Anyone that still writes a handwritten note instead of the easier, cheaper e-mail will appreciate the high quality of the letterpress cards, notes and other paper products available at Twig & Fig.Listed in: Berkeley, My Neighborhood, North…

I stumbled upon this cute little shop as I was trying to find "Love at First Bite" and yes, this place is definitely tucked away. I love cards, fun little notebooks, pens, anything stationary. My friend, Anna, calls me the "Hallmark lady" because I never forget to send a card for birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions.
Browsing around their store, their cards are very unique but pricey! They had some interesting designs for notebooks as well as wood postcards. Eek! They were $5 each! I couldn't justify buying a postcard for that much! I think I would rather frame it or use it as a coaster. Overall, a store worth checking out if you're in the area. -

This place is so much more than a high-end stationary store with vintage letterpress machines. I can honestly say this because Twig and Fig turned what was almost a tragedy into an unbelievable experience. My original printer's letterpress machine went kaputs at the last minute and I was in dire need to find someone who would be willing to take on the work without breaking my bank. So I gave them a call. They listened, accepted the job, and within a matter of days gave me my wedding invitations in the cutest wooden boxes (with my design on it to boot!). The quality of the print job was exceptional!
What topped off my experience at Twig and Fig was the Twig and Fig Team. They were awesome to say the least. They were in contact with me through the entire process and even called to offer me some trade secrets to make my invitations that much more special and personal. I can't put into words how much I owe them for their generosity and hard work.
I would highly recommend Twig and Fig for custom printing and designing; my invitations turned out beautifully! I love them! If my initial plan for printing my invitations hadn't fallen through I would've never come across Twig and Fig. Now that I have, I don't think I can let go!
Thank you so much Twig and Fig! -

This adorable little clutter-free store makes me wish I had a big fancy mahagony desk with brass-handled draws for storing stack after stack of their fine paper, leather-bound notebooks, hand-crafted cards and neat little pocket-sized travel books. Twig & Fig makes me want to be the kind of girl who sees a cute card and buys it immediately while thinking "I'm sure I'll have someone to send this to, soon." I conjure up dreams of old-fashioned pen pal letter writing, fancy hand-stamped, wax-sealed embossed envelopes and delicate calligraphy.
They also have candles, rubber stamps and these awesome interactive greeting cards that comes with a mini CD to make add your own personal pictures or messages or what have you.
And the staff. Holy nice. The man behind the counter entertained our somewhat unwitty and silly banter for the duration of our visit, and wished us well on our afternoon journey.
This store makes me want to be a more domestic person. -

We just worked with Christina on our wedding invitations and it's been a fantastic experience.
Yes, the invitations themselves are expensive, but as my fiance said "at least you're getting something for paying that much." They're really something special. We offset the price by foregoing a printed save the date and inserts in the invitations. Plus, we received a discount and weren't charged for minor revisions on our proof. Christina was also incredibly helpful with related aspects of the invitation - from finding the right bubble mailer for them to making custom stamps to connecting us to an amazing calligrapher.
When you're planning a wedding you want to work with people you can trust in every way, and I can't recommend Twig & Fig (and Christina) highly enough.
UPDATE: I wrote this review before I received our invitations themselves. We worked with Twig & Fig for two events and both invitations were really, really incredible. -

I have walked by this sweet little shop, part letterpress, part papier boutique, several times in the early morning before they were open, thinking to myself, I should not go in here, I would probably spend too much money on beautiful stationery and cards and lovely writing utensils that I truly don't need.
Well, I have just returned home from my first visit to Twig and Fig. I found my perfect holiday cards, a journal, and small gift note cards, all hand-made and embossed. I knew this would happen. Now I have to go back and find my next favorite stationery. It is as though the owners have curated and commissioned their favorite paper artists to show in this lovely paper and stationery gallery and letterpress. And our tastes are congruent.
The woman who kept the shop was equally charming and friendly, and surprisingly (sorry, Berkeley, I am just recently befriending your somewhat aggravating as well as unexpectedly wonderful ways) worldly.
I love paper and stationery, writing utensils; I love writing to my friends and family, sending holiday and birthday cards, and always keeping in touch by way of beautiful pieces of paper. I had thought I should not have come in here because I would spend too much money which should go to other things like groceries and bills, etc. But perhaps now I will think to myself, of course I should have come in here, this is what makes things like bills bearable for me, this is the sage in my soap, the automatic steering in the wheel, the first turning leaves of autumn, the things that make life a little nicer. It's sometimes, often, the small things that are important. Like Twig and Fig. -

Well I don't know. Twig & Fig have a very nice presentation of unique cards and stationery, stuff you won't see anywhere else. But then there's the inevitable corollary: it's pricey!
I found an otter notepad I really loved, but it was $10.00. At this point, I had a bit of an internal struggle in the shop. Would I use it? Could I use it? Is it buying something just to get something from Twig & Fig? Wouldn't I just put it on my desk and admire it? I shook off my enthusiasm and returned to planet earth.
Some more things I saw and couldn't buy: pens mounted on the wall behind the cash register, a little wood-covered notepad with various Swedish looking graphic designs, a coffee mug with mushrooms and fairy / alien creatures on it, a Faber Castell wood barrel pen, fancy elastic bands that I felt enormously enthusiastic about, and multiple hand-made cards.
There's also a clearance corner with a few moleskine weekly planners. It's cool they had a clearance area, I appreciated that, but I couldn't find anything half as good as the full-price merchandise and this vexed me.
If you're a stationery fan, yes, bookmark Twig & Fig and visit next time you're in North Berkeley. However I was so frustrated and blahed out from the prices when I left, I doubt I'll be back. Not unless I feel a masochistic urge coming on.
TIP: If you need a stationery fix -- and you might do after visiting Twig & Fig -- I recommend Target, whose designs lately have been competitive with the graphic sensibilities of Twig and Fig, The Container Store, and Paper Source.Comment from Suzie M. of Twig & Fig 8/28/2009

I love all things stationary, cards, cute pens, etc... This place is like a playground for me. They have some of the cutest notebooks I've ever seen. I stood there for a good 5 minutes trying to figure out what I could use one of the notebooks for. Couldn't think of anything. Damn it.
They have a cute collection of desk supplies and pens too. Cards. And the wrapping paper!!! OMG!! So beautiful. -

This store is fantastique!
I bought a groupon for Twig and Fig because I need custom graduation announcements. I went there 10 minutes before closing, and the owner Serge helped me for almost 45 minutes! He was so helpful and respectful regardless of the groupon discount. I must say it was some of the best costumer service I have experienced in awhile and was so refreshing! Twig and Fig is a charming store with top of the line products, and they have their own design staff for all your paper needs. The business cards they are capable of designing/printing are so awesomely creative! I will go back for sure! -

Not an easy shop to find (you have to go upstairs into a little shopping center), Twig & Fig is a beautiful shop with unique merchandise in a picturesque location. They have one-of-a-kind cards (think wood bark cards with metallic ink), Japanese paper, little mini stickers, leather journals, stationery, etc.
If you are into paper and the like, you will dig this shop. Be sure to bring your plastic! -

Twig & Fig is a very dangerous place for me to even peek my nose into! It is filled with letter-pressed cards and I wind up wanting at least 10 each time I go in here. They have beautiful inks (scented! Rose colored! Invisible!), pens that are out of this world, and paper that makes me want to write to everyone I have ever known.
I am a letter-writer with actual pen and paper to begin with, and I enjoy receiving cards and letters in the mail. Pretty civilized, I think. So, I encourage my children to also write cards and letters. My middle son, Desmond, is all about the trappings of whatever new interest captures his fancy. He is currently coveting an expensive Italian pen (which he will not be receiving!), but I can see his point: it IS beautiful.
The staff here are helpful, eager to assist you, and seem to genuinely love what they do. My needs do not include personalizing or monogramming my own stationery, but if I ever had a big announcement to make, I'd come here to get the work done. My only problem with this shop is that once I purchase the cards here, I save them in my drawer at home. I do not like to part with some of them! It's not that my friends are not appreciative enough to receive these goodies in the mail, it's just that the images give me a thrill each time I open my desk! This is a great place to get ideas and to start up a letter writing practice. After all, everyone likes to get a great surprise in the mailbox (and I don't mean from the IRS!!!). Check this spot out! -

First of, I'm not an artistic specimen of the male species. I am taking a BIG step outside my comfort zone when I explore the realm of creative art undertaking.
Twig and Fig's service was one of the best I received in many art supply stores in the Berkeley area. The helpful attitude welcomed my unfamiliar self into the world of box making, birthday card making and seal insignia stamping.
Although their things are pricy for a student, but it is quality stuff that runs your money.
If you are looking for decorated Japanese paper, nice stationary, Effiel Tower erasers, Twig and Fig is your spot.Listed in: The Places I Go Out, Born to Shop

I am a paper snob and a letterpress junkie. I turn my nose up at the selection of many a card and paper store. I think Papyrus is the new Hallmark.
That said, Twig & Fig had me at hello. They had cards from presses I'd never even heard of. This is by far the best place to buy letterpressed cards in the east bay. I will definitely be going back. -

Maybe we're biased, but we're convinced Twig & Fig is the most talented letterpress in the Bay Area. We looooove their work and were honored to have them create our invites. So many of our guests told us ours were the most beautiful invitations they've seen. We couldn't have been happier. Even if you don't need to get wedding invites, definitely check out their shop. They carry so many cute cards and gift items, it's worth checking out.
To Note: Be prepared if you're planning to order wedding invitations from them. Their prices are high, though the quality of their work and materials are unmatched, definitely worth it. -

I wish I knew how to use a letterpress so I could work there. It seems like good energy to work in a wedge-shaped place. WHOA! What's not to love: ink+machinery+design+awesome paper.
I like that they are located mere feet from my eye doctor. And I like that nearly everything they carry is adorable. I wish I had use for a high-quality address book or had enough money for an ACME bag, but for now I stick to the pack of five thank you cards, "We are having a party!" cards, cute little books on etiquette, and the random "thinking of you" cards just in case I was thinking of you and you didn't know it.
Tip: pretend you are getting married so you can browse their gorgeous portfolio of invitations. -

An elegant shop selling my favorite things - paper and pens - what could be better? Really, if I were on an deserted island, and could only bring 2 things, I would choose pen and paper. So imagine my pleasure in stumbling across this find.
This is not the easiest shop to come across, although as I'm starting to find, sometimes it's all the sweeter when you do. It's on the second floor of a small shopping complex, yet somehow the light from this shop stood out and called to me from the street. So, I followed.
Inside is a long wall of engraved cards, elegantly designed. In another part of the shop are various kinds of notebooks, especially Moleskins - a favorite of mine. On another part of the wall are little magnets, and in the far back, dividing the store from the printer's press and card design area, was a table for pens and folders.
Notebooks tend to be around $8 and up. Folders are about the same. I literally found myself wandering through the entire store trying to pick something to take home with me. Anything that can keep my attention that well for how long deserves four stars. -

Well, they lost me as a customer today. I drove over to talk face-to-face with someone about designing my wedding invitations and I received such crummy customer service that there's no way I'm going back in there. Here's what happened....
-plug the meter full of my pocket change because I know I'm wanting to talk through the details of my plan and order.
-walk into store excited to put my vision into action.
-do not receive any greeting from the lady behind the counter, because she's busily chatting away on the phone and looking at her computer screen.
-I decide to check out what goods they have for sale while she's wrapping that business up.
-TEN minutes pass and nothing. So I move in to the counter and stand in front of her.
-She continues talking on the phone and looking at the computer screen.
-Now I'm getting annoyed and thinking 'really?!' So I put my hands on the counter and make some noise.
-She looks at me like I'm totally interrupting her phone call and does me the favor of covering the phone mouthpiece as an indicator that I may speak to her.
-So I tell her, "I'd like to discuss my potential printing order with someone...do I have to call in to receive attention and have my questions answered?"
-to which she responds, "If you don't mind, yes." And then she immediately resumed her phone call. Wow. Somebody really doesn't get the basics of business or customer service.
-15 minutes passed in that store and I guess I should feel grateful that I didn't waste more of my time or my money at Twig and Fig.
HORRIBLE SERVICE! -

Fig and Twig scores 5 big, fat stars. If I could give them 10, 20 or infinity stars, I would!
This paperie does letterpress and custom cards & baubles right! They inspire, they create, they're uber-talented and well, they're just darn nice. I love paper. That being said I can appreciate stores like this. There's just something about letterpressed cards - simple, modern, and clean. I'm so happy that I was able to stop by yesterday and pick up a birthday card for my husband. I also found a 10 pack of cards in the clearance section for $5! Oh, and the half door? That itself deserves 5 stars.

I only stopped in once but as a stationary fan it charmed me. The store isn't big and the selection isn't a high point yet they do carry a lot of unique products you can't find at any other store... other than the Internet. You can either buy a thank you card for $4 or a pen for $360. I'm not really sure why people are complaining about the prices. This is a high end stationary store. It's not trying to be a Target or Hallmark store. Judge it for what it is. That being said, I didn't buy anything. I'm not entirely sure how long they will stay in business yet I'm pretty sure there's an audience for this type of thing.
They also have custom letterpress services. You can even see the letterpress through the window. I'm not so sure about the quality so you'll have to take your chances.

I think Twig and Fig might be the only store in the world at which I buy something every time I visit, which is very often, and every time I leave with something small, handmade, and beautiful, which means I end up with a surplus of Rhodia pads, letter-pressed cards by local artists, and artisan journals, which means I find excuses to give them away (well, the cards at least...), which means my friends also eventually end up with beautiful things.
Twig and Fig brings happiness to the world. QED. -

Super cute, artsy, independent store. Came here to get my brother a bday card and instantly fell in love with the cards, planners, and other cutesy knick-knacks. The art on the cards are unique to Twig & Fig, so much so, that I believe the card my bf got for me on my birthday was inspired by "us".
Through out the years I have spent hours here figuring out which special card best represnts my sentiments and I have always recieved compliments from my friends and family. Its worth spending a little extra. -

Do you like Paper Source? Then you'll probably love this place. It's a cute little store tucked away off Shattuck not too far from Cheese Board (I was killing time because I forgot Cheese Board Pizza doesn't open until 4:30 --- damn those odd hours!). Journals, greeting cards, kits, all of it very pretty. They carry a lot of the same stuff you see everywhere else, but they've also got more than a few items that I haven't seen in other stores. Definitely worth a visit.
