I usually like to go to Tuttle's pre-Halloween, but couldn't make it this year. This is another field trip favorite of Indianapolis. They have a lot of activities for children of all ages, and the tours are tailored to meet academic standards, including the "Pumpkin Biology Tour," "The Economics of Apples," "Apples Then and Now," and a special homeschool orchard day. If you're a teacher or parent, I recommend you push this field trip to your school--they've been doing educational tours for over 35 years, and not only do their programs give children a glimpse into the world of agriculture (very relevant, of course, in Indiana), they're also really fun. I speak from personal experience!

It's a fun place for adults, too, as you can pick your own apples and check out the farm market store, which carries all kinds of produce and snacks. If you've never been here, go!!! The only way you won't like it is if you're deathly allergic to apples.

    Evvvvvveryone do the orcha-cha-cha-orchard!

The Autumn harvest brings such blissful harmony. I feel like I could hug everyone at these sorts of places. Everyone's so happy. It's Mother Nature's North Pole / FAO Schwartz during Christmas time.

Located NW of downtown (a 25 minute drive from downtown), off Pendleton Pike... this is a super accessible. There are only a few "U-Pick" orchards around, and this is one of them. Rather than picking basket grabbers on a stick (official name, no?) they supplied red flier wagons with baskets.

Jonathan & Cortland are ripe for the pickin'. I thought we picked too much then they rang us up for $8.49 & at that very moment I was incredible happy as how cheap it all was.

They were also down for me to open up the cider in the store, start quaffing and take it around the orchard while picking. The bathrooms were mighty clean, with potpourri. The store had more than apples. It's chock full of autumn treats. They have the full flight of Sioux City sodas. They have a sassafras tea from San Francisco. They have frozen pies to take home.

They don't allow pets on the orchard (due to FDA guidelines).

When we there (mid-September) they had ample pumpkins and they were roasting corn and grilling brats and serving cider slushies outside.

When living here as an adult there will not be an Autumn without apple picking, plain & simple. Oh, you thinking I'm talking about myself? No, no, I'm talking about all of you.

This place is cute. Fun way to spend a few hours. Lots to do for the whole family: hayrides, corn mazes, a beehive, a sunflower garden, pony rides, apples, pumpkins, and CARAMEL APPLES (yum!). Reasonably priced.

Tip: If you do the corn maze (about $5/person), do NOT believe the adorable little old lady when she tells you that no one has gone through the maze AND completed the puzzle sheet. She LIES! Or maybe she means to say that no one has finished the corn maze worksheet in the past [hour, half hour, minute, whatever] and just forgets to mention the last part of the sentence. My friends and I ended up racing against a couple of four-year olds and their parents to get through the maze first. How sad. That adorable little old lady must have gotten such a kick out of making fools out of us.

Apple orchards may be one of the best things about living in Indiana.  California has us on grapes and wine, Florida has us on all things citrus, Idaho and Michigan have us on potatoes - but we have everyone when it comes to apples.  There is something both magical and nostalgic about visiting an apple orchard in the fall, and Tuttle Orchards is no exception.  I only had time to make a quick stop, so did not get to take advantage of the U-Pick apples or the corn maze, but though I just meant to buy a  1/2 peck of apples, I ended up leaving with the apples, a gallon of cider, spice for said cider, a tea ball to use to spice the cider, amish butter, and some farm cheese.  I had to keep myself from buying a frozen pie or some awesome looking popcorn.  I wish the hours for their farm store went a little later as I had to rush to get there before they closed.  They are, however, open year round so I will likely be coming back to pick up some of those pies for the holidays!

On the one hand, this orchard delivers a mean caramel apple. On the other, its "agrimaze" is kind of lame. And why do they call it an "agrimaze" instead of a "corn maze"? This smacks of some kind of corporate re-branding even if it isn't.

In the end, the caramel apple made the adventure worth the drive from Indianapolis. Delicious! As my friend said, "This is the first time I've had a caramel apple where the apple was actually good!" But, hey, we are city folks.

The hot apple cider was cinnamon-y and warming, but the portions were not very generous. Then, there was the "agrimaze." I feel bad complaining about it because the entry fee was only $2. There are so few things that cost $2 these days! But it was really impossible to get lost in the maze, especially with signs giving ordinal hints like: "When the supply of apples gets larger, the cost goes__." If you take the road marked "UP," I suppose you deserve to get lost.

This joint also offers U-Pick apples, pumpkins and various preserves and things in its store. This was a fun outing for four adults and would probably rate even higher for a group with kiddos.

Get out to Tuttles before it gets too cold to pick all the golden, red and other delicious varieties of apples here. This place is family-owned, and does all sorts of school, family, etc. tours. You pick your own apples in the orchard, and then pay for the spoils all at once.

Tuttles makes some great apple cider. Mike, the patriarch, says about four apples always go into it to balance the flavor. Tip: Better cider is made in the autumn, when more apples come into season.

There's also a decent array of cheeses, spreads, veggies and, of course, fresh-made candy apples at the resident shop.

I miss the days of the kids going on preschool field trips to the local apple orchards, so we make it a point to visit at least one each fall. Tuttle Orchards is one of our favorites, by far.

I can't get out of the place without arming myself with enough goodies to get me through the fall ... and into the winter. Well, that's a lie. I go into it like a bear stocking up for winter, but the truth is it doesn't take our family long to hog it all down.

Favorites at the Tuttle market store (located right at the orchard) include candies, caramel apple wraps, apple cider, apples (of course--and Honey Crisp is our favorite variety), and apple crisp ingredients.

Mmmm Mmmm ... isn't fall just the BEST time of year?!

Oh yeah, and there's obviously more to the orchard than the shop ... though it's hard for me to get past that. You can pick your own apples and pumpkins, the kids can take field trips here, and there are holiday events as well.
