One of Tuscarora Mill Restaurant's Favorite Reviews What's This?
A really nice and intimate restaurant that many locals call their own. The food is perfect...didn't have anything from the appetizer to the dessert that wasn't tasty, fresh and perfect all around. Be prepared to spend some hard earned money here...won't be a passive dining experience at all. Downstairs, they have their own bakery so you can pick up a few items to take home with you too. Really personable staff and as upscale as this place is...there's no strings attached...what you see is what you get. Enjoy!

It's kinda a pain to get to during rush hour since it's in downtown Leesburg... especially if the cops have a "Driver's License checkpoint" set up along the way. Besides that, the location definitely has a sense of history. Like several other restaurants in LoCo, it's housed in a historical building of one form or another. The largely wood interior is classic in that anitque way and it avoids the manufactured feeling other resaurants have. The atmosphere isn't so stuffy that you'll feel out of place in jeans but it's upscale enough that you can take a date there all gussied up.
Our server was pleasant, very knowledgable about the menu/ingredients and seemed to actually enjoy her job. She wasn't working there because she couldn't do anything else... well, she might be... but she did a good job of faking it. She seemed to take pride in the service she provided and the food the chef prepares. (Which is a lot more than I can say about that god-awful Clydes in Ashburn. It was great when it opened but the service has really hit the shitter as of late.) She was almost too pleasant, and by the end of the night I kind of wanted her to go away, but I shouldn't complain about that.
As usual, their beer selection is pretty good. If you like beer, be sure to head over to my post about their beer selection from 6 months ago. I chose this option (again) and chose the Fullers London Pride (again), Hofbrau Hefeweizen and had the bartender pour me something I forgot. The beer was tasty as usual and the ability to choose a flight is one of my favorite things about the place. Bringing me a half glass of Lagunitas Censored unprompted and without charge didn't hurt either.
The food was really, really good. I can't remember it being as tasty as it was on my previous visits. I expected a decent meal but both the wife and I were surprised at the quality of every single course. I rarely have a hard time figuring out what to order because I know what I like. Somehow, Tuskies managed to get a lot of what I like on the same menu so I had a tough time picking. Below is what I ordered; it was all great. Cheap? No, but I don't feel like I got ripped off.
On a last minute trip to Leesburg to pick up a Craigslist purchase, I decided to visit Yelp for some good suggestions for dinner. Tuscarora Mill caught my attention because of the building itself being a turn of the century flour mill. After an hour of driving, it was finally time to eat.
The evening started out SO promising. We arrived for dinner at 6:40PM. Drinks came, bread came, and appetizers were out super fast... then the wait... our waitress came to take our entree orders about ten to fifteen minutes after our appetizers were demolished. I ordered the trout, and my dining partner ordered the Kobe steak medum rare... That took about twenty minutes to come out... And when we got our food, the steak was well done through and through. Unfortunately the wonderful service that everyone on Yelp had raved about was nowhere to be found. Steak is one of those foods that you just have to check back on to make sure that it's cooked properly.
Ten minutes later, we flagged down a food runner to take it back to the kitchen for us. The manager came to us and apologized and offered us free dessert, but I was so annoyed and stressed out about missing the ferry back home that I thanked him but politely declined his offer. At that rate, we'd be heading home at mignight. The waitress came out and inquired about the absence of his plate, "Was the steak that good or was it not cooked properly?"
Another fifteen to twenty minutes later, after wondering what was taking the steak so long considering the fact that we had asked for it medium rare, the steak came out. By then I was pretty much finished with my trout after sharing it with my ravenous and peeved fiance. The steak was delicious, but definately not worth the wait.
At the end of the evening, we were given a card for a free entree and a bill for $110... It was 9PM... 2 hours and 20 minutes for appetizers and entrees without dessert. It saddens me, because the food really was delicious, but the service was so terrible, that I can't even justify making the trip out there again just to eat. I left an undeserving $20 tip and left with a bad taste in my mouth for Tuscarora Mill. Maybe the waitress was having a bad day or something, but I don't see why my dining experience had to suffer.
On another note, would anyone like to trade anything for a free entree card at Tuscarora?
For me, it's all about the sides. If there's several dishes on a menu with whipped potatoes, grits or some vegetable with bacon, I'm going to have a tough time making a selection. That was my experience at Tuscarora Mill.
I started with the corn chowder which was very tasty and had lots of fresh corn, potatoes and best of all, bacon. Then I tried the shrimp and grits (I'm a sucker for cheese grits). Total comfort food. No bacon this time, but ham. Score!
Come dessert, I couldn't cram anymore in, but several in our party raved about the bread pudding (they had eaten here before) and they didn't even look at the dessert menu, they ordered it again without blinking.
The service was fantastic too. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable (about the beer selection) and willing to go that extra step (for example, he brought one of our party a spinach salad even though it wasn't on the menu any longer and gave me a half pint of beer when I whined about wanting just a little more).

Had off from work on a grey Friday afternoon and decided to get some good food. When dining in Leesburg for a nice meal, two restaurants come to mind. Local big shots Lightfoot and Tuscarora Mill. It was still to early for a dinner menu in either establishment so I was drawn to Lightfoot for a nice lunch. After a very uncomfortable and un welcome greeting, I got back in my car and headed to "Tuskies." As I have visited both restaurants for Lunch and Dinner I found that today was exceptional on the Mills behalf. First choice was to sit at the bar. Their selecetion of beers on draft and bottles is great! Normally I will not drink a sweet beer but I tried a seasonal cherry lager. Not the most macho beer, but still over 7 % so I justified myself to order one. Perfect draft for the meal. My server was attentive and knowledgeable of the menus fare. However, my visit was between lunch and dinner hours so I wouldnt have expected less. Most important information to take from this yelp is the corn chowder. If you enjoy soup as much as myself, do yourself a favor and order the chowder. As many times as I have eaten at Tuscarora Mill, I have always ordered the chowder. If I wasnt such a food snob and so ambitious to try different things each visit, I might even order two bowls for a full meal. To me its just that good! Seeing that I was drinkin a heavy draft and rich cream based soup I did not want anything to heavy for a second course because I knew I would be ordering the butterscotch bread pudding for dessert. So I ordered the house salad. Pretty standard local green salad garnished appropriately and dressed in a champagne vinagrette. It wouldnt have stood out as a memorable dish but the dressing was so delicious that I had to mention it in the post. As I spoke of the bread pudding earlier, superb! I considered the price reasonable to moderately high. But you get what you pay for. A warm welcome, good service, excellent fare, in a nice setting. In the area and looking for a great meal, Tuscarora Mill is certainly a great establishment!
Once again, yelp helped steer us to a solid dining option. This Leesburg institution is housed in an old grain mill, which became quite obvious as we entered and noticed the open beam wood ceiling, wood floors and what appeared to be a grain scale at the entrance.
Surprisingly, the dining room side was a bit formal, so we opted to eat our dinner on the bar side which has the same menu options as well as a handful of bar appetizers.
Being close to Maryland and the water, I decided to indulge in some East Coast seafood and ordered the lobster salad and crab cake. Both were good, although the lobster was literally a whole claw served on top of greens rather than mixed into the salad. The crab cake was chock full of crabmeat and satiated my need.
What seemed to be missing was a good drink menu. Throw a couple of inventive drinks in the mix and I bet diners would be excited. No, a mango mojito doesn't suffice as an inventive drink, although it was good. I think some of the classics revisited would work well in this historic setting.
The service was attentive, the bread is baked in house and was similar to some of the artisan stuff we have in the Bay Area. Not bad, Leesburg!

I've only been here once but was pleasantly surprised by level of service and quality of food. A friend had recommended it as a great family restaurant. She brings her family all the way from Herndon to eat here.
Personally, I plan to come here with my wife on special occasions ... I probably won't bring the three kids ... at least not for dinner. The atmosphere was fine dining with candles and wine glasses. As a plus, the building appears to be an actual historic mill with some interesting equipment still in place.

I cannot write about one single experience here, as I go as often as I can afford to.
The dress is formal, but if you sit at the bar you can go in and have a GREAT meal and pair it with their fantastic beer selection right after you go rock climbing, as I have done before!
Tuskies also offers 5 course beer and wine dinners, each paired by their expert chef's with a different beverage. They bring in experts who discuss the product, whether it is beer or wine, and field questions from the diners.
The staff at Tuskies goes above and beyond. One female waitress, who I seem to be able to request each time I go, has the cheeriest manner and has found a lifetime customer. At a rather large, slightly rowdy dinner I was expressing myself with my hands, and knocked over my beer that had less than half of the liquid left. She immediately appeared with napkins to cover the spill, and had the bartender pour me a new beer without charge. She has always earned over a 30% tip from me.
The food at Tuskies is, above all, consistent. And the quality is top-tier. My favorite meal begins with the crab cakes, moves to one of the cuts of steak with a side of Gorgonzola-whipped butter, and ends with the apple pie. And in the over twenty times I have been here, I have not ONCE had a complaint. One of my friends and I had a 5 hour dinner, because over drinks and wine, he decided he must have another rack of lamb!
I cannot say enough great things about the restaurant. The chefs, the bartenders, and the service staff are all passionate and the restaurant simply glows because of it.

It's funny how there seem to be two camps in Leesburg: the Tuskies camp and the Lightfoot camp. I'm definitely a member of the Tuskies camp. I've been to both, and I still can't imagine how anyone can prefer Lightfoot, but I guess that's why we all have opinions. I can understand having a preference, but after 2 beer dinners and 4 regular dinners at Tuskies, any complaints about service or quality of food are just off base in my opinion, and I can't imagine how anyone could give a 2 star rating.
But moving on, last night's beer dinner was yet another exceptional experience here. For those that don't know, Tuskies is very big on beer and they offer monthly beer dinners, or similar themed meals, where you make a reservation and a brewmaster will come and offer up 5 or 6 brews that Chef Patrick then pairs with a 5-course tasting menu. The brewer will talk about each batch, the history of the company, provide anecdotes, and walk around talking with people if they have questions. It's really nice to talk with the brewmasters themselves and realize that there is an amazing amount of time, science, and care applied to creating their beers.
Food at the beer dinners can be hit or miss, as they're usually unique creations that the chef has chosen to pair with the beers. It's almost like a little iron chef competition in seeing what they were inspired to create given the theme beer for each course. The majority of the time it's excellent, but sometimes there will be a dish that just doesn't do it for me, but I think that's to be expected with a multi-course tasting menu.
The main menu at the restaurant, however, is full of tried and true successes and I've never had anything that wasn't fantastic. The menus are seasonal, though a few classics are always on there, like the shrimp and grits or steak au poivre. I've had anything from pumpkin ravioli, to spring vegetable pasta, to the moist juicy rosemary chicken you could ever imagine. And I just read an award at the restaurant last night that claims they have the best burgers in the area as well. I've never been for lunch, but after seeing that I may have to!
Ambiance seems to be a topic of debate here. Since prices are high, I think people anticipate fine dining but that's not really what you'll find here. The atmosphere is nice and cozy, as the restaurant is a converted mill, but it can get loud and tables are close together. If you're a diner that prefers ambiance and intimacy, then maybe Tuskies isn't for you. The prices reflect the quality of food, and the attention to detail used in each menu item, not the exclusivity of dining here.
Tuskies is easily one of the greatest restaurants I've been to, and I always leave feeling perfectly happy and content with what I've eaten. I'll continue coming back and will never hesitate to accept an invitation to one of their beer dinners. If you've never been, I highly recommend going if you're a fan of good food and beer.

Tuskie's is definitely my favorite restaurant in Leesburg.
It's really grown up over the past 6 or 7 years. It wasn't always as great as it is today. The menu has some great mainstay dishes like the shrimp and grits and smoked chicken penne pasta, but also shakes things up with some great specials like Roast Elk or grilled Wahoo which was awesome (had never tried it before). The best thing is that it's just consistently good. I like its competition, the Lightfoot, as well, but they've been hit or miss at times. Tuskies is always solid.
I love to go just to have the Belgian ales and lambics. They've got a great selection. Service has always been good, whether we've gone to the cafe for an early dinner or lunch or the main dining room.
This place was recommended by a guy at the local wine shop. We dined outdoors, heard live music and thoroughly enjoyed our meal and attentive service. We'll be back for sure.
We had a late seating for lunch, so the lunch rush had come and gone - nice and quiet. They were a little slow on service; I attribute that to our ordering from the menu rather than the brunch buffet. They were very attentive to replenishing our drinks and waters. We had two birthdays in our party, they brought our desserts with candles in them and even provided wine glasses with candies for our birthday people. The corn chowder was outstanding. The desserts were okay.
I'd like to give this restaurant 4.5 stars. It is an absolute fave for my husband and me. We had gone to a winery in the area and cut our tour short because we were both thinking about Tuskies for dinner. Love LOVE this restaurant. Beginning with service....top notch! My husband ordered the trout and said that it was the best trout he's ever eaten. He took half home for lunch and was ooohing and ahhhhing even a day later. I ordered the corn chowder and house salad with grilled shrimp. YUM-O! No meal is complete without coffee and it better be fresh and good....it WAS. We also ordered the brownie sundae and I tell you it would make you want to lick the odd-shaped bowl it comes in.
Tuskies is the local Leesburg standby for a good meal. I've dined there dozens of times. Sometimes the dinners can be a little inconsistent, with the kitchen over-salting dishes. But in general, this is one of the two or three fine dining choices in town that I'd always refer friends to.
Tuscarora Mill wine dinners are not to be missed. Once a month they have a 5-7 course meal with wine pairings, usually held in the private dining room downstairs. These are stellar dining experiences and Chef Patrick's creativity shines much brighter during these events.

I reccently attended a beer dinner here and it was AWESOME! You hear about people being able to pair food and wine but tuskies does a great job with their food and beer pairings!
The beer came from Laguanitas in Northern California and it by itself was amazing. Then pair it with perfectly cooked mahi mahi, or a barbeque slider or the most perfectly prepared duck sausage stuffed peppers and its absolutely incredible. The food was absolutely amazing.... and hey it got me to eat duck, pork and fish! I guess I really am growing up.
The service was fantastic and the representative from the brewery that was there was wonderful. Overall it was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to go back for another dinner
** a side note... apparantly they have a daily $5 lunch special during the week that chances and would be great to check out if you worked in the area!

Very good. Would give 4.5 stars if possible. The place was recommended by a local winery. Excellent food, and at mid-level prices - they could easily be charging double for the level of service, the atmosphere, and quality of the food. Lunch for two with alcohol was about $45. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, and fun to interact with. The food was well presented and solid. Would definitely come back if I were in the area.

Y-U-M-M-Y! Tuskies is always a great time and delicious meal. Many reviews say that Tuskies is formal, but you can get away with business casual or even jeans. Just don't look like a bum. My mom loves the shrimp and grits while I tend to go for steak. They have a great selection of Belgian beers and lambics. Be sure to save room for dessert as they are to die for. For less "formal" dining, grab a seat at the bar.
Came in here after visiting the Loudoun County Fair- desperate for some good food.
The atmosphere is very nice and homey, but it seems very formal. When I walked in in a t-shirt and jeans, I felt very out of place at first. I was assured by the host, however, that there was no dress code and that I wouldn't be out of place. It is a very quiet atmosphere though- I did feel like I was the youngest person there by about 15 years at least (I'm 20).
I had an extremely attentive server who bowed to my every whim. I felt a bit like a queen actually.
The bread was excellent- I know that sounds strange- but ohman, you haven't tasted bread til you've tried this bread. I tried just eating a piece, but ended up devouring the whole basket.
I had a crab special that was very good, if not exactly what I expected. The sauce with it, whatever it was, was divine.
It was a bit pricey, but worth it. Not the best place I've ever been, but a very pleasant experience.

I really enjoy the aesthetics of this restaurant, although it seems like it tries to be something it is not.
One of my associates and I ordered an iced tea and my other associate ordered a lemonade. The iced tea tasted like Lipton mix, and the lemonade tasted like Minutemaid from a fountain. The water tasted like my friend's play pool.
I started with the Ahi Tuna app. The seared rare tuna portion was decent, but the smoked tuna portion reminded me of a tuna salad. The grilled brioche was fun, but I don't think I'd order this starter again.
One of my associates ordered the Bucatini and Meatballs. Big mistake, but we warned him this was not the establishment to order Italian fare at.
I ordered the Athenry Farm Chicken which was made even more enjoyable by their smooth whipped potatoes. To me, the portion size of the chicken was akin to a cornish game hen. It was good, but didn't stand out as exceptional.
Our waitress, Kathleen, was very attentive. I may return another day to try a different app and entree.

Here we had one of our finest dining experiences in the DC/NOVA area. The interior is woody and warm, restored from a 19th century mill. But the best part definitely was the food. The roasted chicken was possibly one of the best chicken dishes I've had-- rightly crispy outside, extremely juicy and tender inside. Wow. The pepper crusted steak was delicious. As an appetizer, the tomato quiche was just right. Main dishes are $18-30, which I think is reasonable for the quality. The waiter made perfect recommendations for wine by the glass ($7-10) to go with our choice of main dish.
Mango mojito was a little too sweet, and the service could have been a little more personal, but they didn't compromise the food quality. Oh, they make really good lemon drops!

I was definitely taken by this place when my hubs took me to it for my birthday back in November. We were both in the mood for something that had some individuality and great food. Living in the burbs can be a bit of a drag food-wise sometimes. We were trying to avoid a chain at all costs and we just stumbed upon the Tuscarora Mill website. So, I made a reservation and we were off!
What a great find. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was just what we were looking for! It's in an old mill so it has some great old dark wood all around the place. The rooms are a little chopped up, we ended up sitting along the far wall that was in it's own little hallway of sorts. The only downfall there was that the server kept having to move out of the way of anyone who wanted to enter or exit our area, but hey that didn't bother me.
Anyway, food, fantastic, the quality is excellent and they definitely had some unique and upscale items on the menu. The hubs decided to try the Foi Gras and was quite pleased. I have to say I was drooling for the desserts (fyi I was 8 months preggo then and picky about food but wanting to eat eat eat, lol). I wasn't let down at all, delicious!
All in all it's a great find and worth every penny to get out and get away from the typical fare of the burbs! We can't wait to go back again!
Never had a bad meal here. Quality is great (some of the best around) and the price is still managable. If you want to have real nice dinner in Leesburg, Tuskies is a must!

Best formal place in town. Very reasonable for lunch and great for a nice dinner with your spouse or significant other. I would not recommend bringing small children but they have a really great private dining room downstairs where we celebrated my wife's 30th birthday with family. To get a sense of how great this place is, they are actually naming the next high school Tuscarora and there was no backlash.

My husband I have lived in the area for about 2 years, so we decided to head to down town Leesburg. We hadn`t been down there before. Read some great reviews for some great resturants and choose Tuscarora. When we arrived we were seated (reservation) in a nice quiet corner. It appeared the resturant was pretty packed (friday night, 9pm). The waiter greeted us right away and was very nice. We ended up ordering the spring roll app., steak, shrimp and grits. The spring rolls were very good, very diffrent. Very fresh tasting. Finally our entrees arrived perfectly timed. The shrimp and grits were amazing, the shrimp were cooked perfectly. The steak was cooked exactly as ordered and was also delicious. We did not have room for dessert, seeing as we asked for takout boxes. The service was wonderful. I would recommed this place to have a great dinner out. Can`t wait to go back! Check out the pictures for visuals.

This is one of the best restaurant in Northern Virginia. The food is good, however, I would like to see more simple food. I had the shrimp and grits dish...and would have preferred it to be simpler like I have had done in South Carolina...instead it had lots of tomatoes and strong Virginia ham...It was tasty, however, it would have been excellent if it concentrated more on the shrimp and grits. The same for the dish of beef ragout which was tasty but had more shitake mushrooms than beef...which made us think it should have been called shitake mushroom pasta or something. So although the ingredients are fresh,,,I opine that they are trying to be too fancy with their food. I really enjoyed their baked bread--excellent and the selection of beers on tap...the service was top notch and the old wood building with really high ceilings was a cool dining setting. I will go back and try to order the simplest thing on the menu.

I just had one of the best meals at a restaurant that I've had in long time. I'm a very picky eater and therefore I am not always a fan of eating out. I had the fillet Mignon and it had the best green beans that I've ever had with it and awesome mashed potatoes. I had the warm apple pie for dessert, which was delicious and a perfect size. Yes its a little pricy but a lot of the food is locally grown and the location is just quant and has a very "old town Leesburg" feeling. My family agreed that it was well worth the price because the food was amazing, it's not a loud restaurant, its very peaceful and relaxing, and the waitress was very attentive.
They have an excellent "Managers suggested: wines under 40$ list" and we had an amazing Argentinean wine.
The dress is anywhere between jeans (especially in the bar) and nice dresses and men in jackets.
I can't wait to go back as there were 4 or 5 other things I wanted to try.

Last night was the first time I've been to Tuskie's. Friends of mine have raved about this place for years, so my boyfriend Greg and I met had dinner with them there.
I had a mango mojito to start with (which was absolutely perfect!) and Greg and I shared the portobello mushroom appetizer. It was perfectly grilled, accompanied with goat cheese, tomato and a balsamic glaze.
The house ciabatta bread was also delicious, very salty, but in a good way!
Our friends Kelly and Matt shared the lobster polenta appetizer, which was also fantastic. Kelly and I ordered the fish special (which was corvina served on top of leeks and greens... very interesting, great textures and flavors), Matt ordered lamb chops, and Greg ordered short ribs, which are served with the most amazing grits any of us have ever had, brussel sprouts and marscapone (I think) cheese. All of us LOVED our entrees.
For dessert, we all shared the bread pudding, which was served a la mode and was to die for!
After dinner, Greg and I hung out at the bar (the bartender, Mike I think??, was GREAT!!) and had too much of the very delicious cherry beer, which the bartender was nice enough to let us sample first (along with the apple beer).
Loved this place- it definitely lived up to the hype and we will be going back very soon!
Good food - a bit pricey but a must try! I really enjoy their fish of the day!
Only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is that I really like the cafe menu up front, and on high volume times (Thurs-Saturday), it's tough to find a seat. I'm not into hovering around for 45 minutes for a table. While the menu in the back, "fancy", sit-down area is fantastic, I venture to Tuskies for the great salads and the crab cake sandwich. Never had a bad meal or poor service. The bartenders can't be beat and have been there for YEARS. Great international beer selection as well- something for all tastes on tap.

My husband's family took us out to this place for dinner, we ordered the filet mignon, venison special of the day, lamb chops and pan-friend halibut. We enjoyed all dishes and the presentation was excellent. Service was slow though, I wasn't sure if it was one of those slow dinner places or if they were short-staffed. We also ordered dessert: creme brulee, chocolate torte and cheesecake. Very yummy stuff. When they presented the check they apologized for the inconveniences of the night and gave us the desserts complimentary. Total for a party of 7 was about $300, this also includes some appetizers and a bottle of wine. If you came just for the entrees it'd cost between $16-23 per person.

Over-rated.
Average food at above average prices. Service is slow and spotty.
Wine list is over priced.
I guess the high ratings are due to the lack of competition in the area. Lightfoot is the only other option and is way better for food and at the same price.
