This is a strange find... In a town (country?  world?) full of abstract or new-age painters, this is a gallery populated almost exclusively by Da Vinci wannabes.  It's pretty strange.  There were a number of things that I really enjoyed, but the best stuff is the glasswork, and that's just not plentiful enough to hold up the mostly uninspiring artwork.

I'd recommend that you come in here for a few minutes and browse around, and keep your eyes low to catch the best of the work, but don't pin your artistic hopes on this place.  There's better around.

My friend works here, which is the only reason I've had the courage enough to step inside. Unlike the other very open and stark galleries in U Mall, Turning Point has warm lighting and walls and feels plush like a rich grandfather's study. They feature a variety of art from around the world. My friend works with the two owners and has played a small role in selecting some of the pieces and artists. Though most of the work is far beyond my price-range, there are some items that can be had on a smaller budget. Also, the 2nd Friday Art Walk offers discounts on some pieces. Look for the pottery and glass crafts in the foyer -- these are the fine work of my friend and her mother!

The associates at Turning Point Gallery were extremely helpful in finding me a specific painting of UNC's Old Well that I was looking for. I had seen a print online, and when I attempted to order it, they were all sold out. I took all of the information from the website, brought it to Turning Point, and they quickly pulled up all of the information that I needed. While the prices and the painting and shipping were steep, I got over it, because they found the exact picture I was looking for. I didn't take too much time to glance around at the rest of the work there, but can definitely recommend them if looking for something specific.

Buyer beware. No refunds - no exceptions - no common sense.

My partner and I bought a $200 glass table piece with three oil wick candles for a wedding gift. After we brought it home we realized that the oil wells for the candles were not such a good idea for our friends and their two cats.

We returned the item to the store still wrapped in all of its cellophane and yards of bubble wrap. The item had never been opened in any way.

The clerk was adamant that he could offer me in-store credit only. I made the case that the item was still in its original packaging untouched and unused. It was not as if I bought a painting, hung it on my wall for a weekend party and then returned the painting on Monday. I was trying to return an item bought as a wedding gift.

The owner is certainly within his rights not to offer me a refund. After all, his "no refund" policy was spelled out on the receipt that we saw only AFTER we had made our purchase. But it is a bad model of customer service to not consider the situation before enforcing the rules.

Turning Point Gallery is one local business that will not be getting any more of my local support.
