This is one of my favorite wineries!
We stayed for about an hour talking and drinking, it was a blast!! I guess it depends on when you get here and if they are busy, what type of service you get. Our experience was wonderful!!
Can't wait for another road trip!!Listed in: Wineries | Paso Robles

Great wine. GREAT wine.
...but horrible service. It's sort of like you're the unpopular high school yearbook reporter asking for a photo of the popular girls (I use the term "girls" loosely here as the average age of the tasting room attendants was probably 57). They'll reluctantly stop what they're doing to give you a fake smile, but you get the feeling they're going to make fun of you when you leave.
But, as I mentioned, they have some phenomenal wine, and their new tasting room and patio are beautiful. So if you can deal with the unpleasant vibes, your tounge will thank you. -

Gorgeous tasting room, with lots of high quality gifts.
Turley tastings are poured into take home Riedel glasses.
Though the staff acted like they were full of turd.
TIP O the DAY: Rotta Winery vines share the same hills as Turley but with much better price points. Check it out! -

This is the one wine club I haven't been able to let go of. Delicious wines. Yes, pricey, but well worth some of my hard earned expendable income. My only complaint is that I've been in "the club" for a while now and they still won't let me buy any White Coat!
I guess I can wait... -

I read a lot of Yelp reviews before stopping for my second visit and glad they didn't scare me away. I can see what the consensus comments were, but this place has fantastic wines. Miss Turley is a world renown winemaker so you might expect to have expensive wines and even a few snooty pourers at the tasting room. I had a nice little old lady that was friendly who forgot to charge me for the tasting. I bought 2 bottles that will have to be for special occasions because they are pricey, but So Worth It. It's pretty standard to charge nowadays, but you get an $8 glass so it's a wash. No excuse for rudeness these people should treat newcomers especially well. So if someone isn't treating you right , move down the bar to someone else or ask "Is there anyone friendly working today."

Turley has truly delicious wines, but you will be priced out with an average of a $40 Zin. Hit Total Wine and you'll be a-ok...

I agree with many of the other reviews - both positive and negative - but in more muted tones. The zins are good and full-bodied but not as amazing as some reviewers have said. I prefer Biale zins myself.
Also, the tasting room was very nice, but I would also agree that the staff seemed a bit less than helpful. There is nothing extremely egregious that happened. I just got the feeling that they looked down on me and treated the other patrons better. I even didn't get as nice a bag as the people who were there before me, even though I think I bought more. Picky and petty, I know - but it's the little things. The pourer seemed to converse with the other patrons for a long time before even acknowledging my presence, and she seemed to be a bit impatient and short with me. -

Nice grounds but not really thrilled by the whole experience. Had to pay $10 for tasting with only 4 wines and no credit towards tasting if you buy. Suggest seeking out Graveyard Vineyards for a more relaxed space.

Absolutely beautiful tasting room with a great antipasto type snacks to go along with some very, very nice Zinfandels. Minus one star for the somewhat high $10 tasting fee. Super cool staff despite the somewhat frenzied weekend atmosphere.
As another reviewer mentioned, it did feel a little "slick" and corporate, which may not be what you're looking for. -

I had high hopes for this place, they advertised as only Old Vine Zins, which are my favorite and not very easy to find. They wines were good, and I enjoyed them. The culture of the winery wasn't my thing, it was a little catty and full of over priced souvenirs. I'm not sure I'd go back here, honestly I am a little disapointed that I didn't fall in love with ALL of their old vin Zins, I LOVED two of them, but not all. It was $10 to taste which is a little high if you think about only 4 tastings. But, you got to keep the Riedel glass... not that we need more glasses...

My opinion of Turley is not a popular one, but it is what it is...
While I find their wines to be ok (nothing great, but nothing worth complaining about), it is the atmosphere that most turns me off.
For being in a small town where most wineries are welcoming and incredibly helpful, Turley has a way of making tasters feel rushed, and like they are in a much bigger winery... I go wine tasting in the area with friends quite often, and I will not be returning to Turley. I much prefer the many wineries in the area that have a more personal feel, and better/more authentic customer service. -

Nice little winery that let us bring our dog in since it was mid-week and not very crowded. Our wine hostess was very friendly but a little scattered - she ended up waiving our tasting fee because she poured a reserve wine that was misplaced telling us it was something else.
The zins were OK but a bit pricey. -

***My winery/tasting room reviews are rated based upon many factors. First is QPR or quality to price ratio of the wine. In other words, is the wine priced according to how good it is. The second factor is the tasting room experience. This involves the staff, grounds and anything unique about the winery.***
Tasted: Mid-2010
Tasting room fee: $10, includes logo glass
Wine price range: $10-$65
This is about the fifth time I have tasted at Turley. I decided to write an update for a couple reasons. First, they have a new tasting room. Second, I am surprised at some of the comments about them being snooty and wanted to share my experiences here.
First, they have a new tasting room. They took an old building that was not in use and made it into their tasting room. They used a lot of original materials from the building. The room is rustic yet modern at the same time. The wood work on the ceiling is awesome.
Again, this is my fifth time tasting here. And as usual, I was dressed very casually, torn up camo shorts and a t-shirt. I may not look like a connoisseur, but I am not out to impress the tasting staff.
As usual, the staff was very warm and welcoming. We chatted about their new releases. The staff also had loads of information about the specific vineyards and their history.
Their zins are all great. What I really like about Turley is that the wines they are carrying in the tasting room are typically priced less than can be found elsewhere (that is IF you can find them). I left with a few bottles of the Ueberoth, about $20-$35 cheaper than I can find on http://wine-searcher.com. I also came out with several bottles of their "leftovers" zin blend which at $10 a bottle is a steal.
About the mailing list people gripe about. Well, they only make so much wine. It is very common for wineries to have a wait list. As people drop off, they let more people in. I waited 3 years to get on the Sea Smoke list and a full 5 agonizing years to get on the Kosta Browne list. The fact that Turley sets aside wine to sell in their tasting room (and less than the going rate at that) is amazing. Try tasting at the other 2 wineries I listed. You won't because they do not have tasting rooms.
Again, they make some of the best new-world style zins on the central coast. Stop in and give them a chance.Listed in: California Wine Tasting

Review from Nicholas F.
San Luis Obispo, CA
As a disclaimer, I'd like to say that there are a few things I look for in a winery. First and foremost is the wine, particularly if the quality is worth the price. Second is the customer service, as this will affect my experience at the winery. Third is the atmosphere, which the winemaker and tasting room pourers often have the least control over.
First and foremost, the wine. Don't let it fool you, this place has FABULOUS wines. Their zinfandels are quite phenomenal. Their tasting fee is $10 for 4 wines and you get to keep the glass. The bottles are roughly $45-55, which is kind of out of my price range, hence (part of the) lower rating.
Second is the customer service. I felt that the service here was rather lacking. Our tasting room pourer seemed rather snobbish, as if he had somewhere better to be even though there was nobody else there. He seemed overall pretty knowledgeable, though it was hard to tell because it felt like he didn't think we were worth a full response in any of our questions.
Third, but certainly not least is the atmosphere. They recently remodeled their tasting room and it is GORGEOUS. One of the tasting room staff noticed a fallen down oak tree during the remodel and suggested that they buy it to use for their bar. The result is one of the most gorgeous tasting room bars I've ever seen. The outside looks rather bland, but the inside is real pretty.
Overall, I might come back, but it would be for the wine and not for the service. -

Fullerton, CA
Some top-notch wines here (probably the best pure zinfandels you're going to get in Paso, possibly in the entire state), and a beautiful tasting room. This is California zinfandel done right. There's nothing extraordinarily creative or innovative about the wines Turley makes, but for what they are, they are very good.
Prices are a bit high (especially if you're not a zin fan), but this is the only place you're going to be able to get your hands on any Turley wines without waiting for years to get onto their mailing list. The people pouring the wine range from nice and knowledgeable to aloof and unengaged, so that part of the experience (if you're looking for it) can be a bit luck-of-the-draw. -

Came to this place while in Paso Robles because the restaurant I work in serves Turley Zinfandel. I hadn't arranged any kind of special tour or even identified myself as being 'in the biz'. I found the experience tasting at Turley to be out of this world.
My friend and I arrived just as another couple were on the 1rst taste of their 4 bin tasting. We joined in and tasted a grenache to start and then 3 zinfandels from 3 different vineyards; Pesenti, Dusi and Ueberroth. Amazing. I'm not even a BIG fan of large reds like Zin AND I loved this experience.
The woman hosting us whose name I can no longer remember was gracious, VERY knowledable and had worked for Turley for some time. She was very good at adjusting her delivery and speak to the level of 'tastee' and not 'fog out' less experienced sippers with overly techie wine words.
At some point she asked me if I was in the business and I did tell her that the Bistro where I work sells the Duarte vineyard Zinfandel. She told me that most 'industry' folks walk in expecting all sorts of accomodatations and she found it refreshing that I'd kept my Turley exposure under my hat. Really? I was feeling so fortunate to be there tasting the various vineyards, particularly the Ueberroth...that stuff is magic! Real. Magic.
We left with a bottle of olive oil that I recently opened to serve over some fresh grilled fish at a dinner party I held. OMG! Amazing. I hope to get back there again but they SHIP so if it's not in the cards I know a KILLER olive oil my UPS agent can deliver right to my door.
They keep regular business hours in general so plan accordingly. We'd arrived at just past 7 the evening before and missed them. We planned our next morning around getting to taste before hitting the road to Big Sur. We'd got coffee and a snack at a nearby cafe and enjoyed it on the Turley property...there are several outdoor tables in the midst of there buildlings and plantings. What a great way to start the day. Wine before Noon? It's business! ;) -

I agree with Kelli H's friend - the wine IS liquid gold! 5 stars on that.
But the tasting room experience, though a pleasant atmosphere, made me feel like the Baby Ruth in the swimming pool. Not even about my tasting ability or limited wine vocabulary, just my very presence. How much do you have to purchase to get a friendly pourer or have them waive the tasting fee? Is a case not enough? It's not about the money, it's the principle.
The hostage wine club is the biggest turnoff. After waiting 2 years to get in the club, then 2 years of purchasing everything offered each time so as not to lose our standing, we are quitting the club. I'll stop by when in town to pick up some of their hard-to-find but SUPERB old vine zin, but otherwise, I don't need this kind of hassle.
side note: try gingerbread or ginger biscotti with some of this Zin. it IS a magical pairing. -
Review from Angela B.
I've been to Turley for the spring & fall pickup parties for the last two years, & let me just say that in addition to gorgeous facilities (adobe / stucco-style buildings, a network of beautifully landscaped courtyards & breezeways, & several fountains adorned with trailing rosemary), the place has some of the abso-fucking-lutely best zinfandel I have ever had in my life.
In a lot of ways, their zins remind me of Spelletich's - big, bold, fruity, & often high alcohol (these are definitely new-world wines). They certainly focus on zin, but I've also had petite syrah here & maybe a few other things from time to time. If you can get into the wine club (not easy - it generally stays full & there's a wait list), pick up parties are definitely the way to go - live music (usually something kind of bluesy & folksy), homemade pizza made & cooked on-site, not to mention a ton of other delicious food (we usually make lunch out of it), & jovial, avuncular Larry Turley himself usually pouring something old & delicious (in addition to everything else you can taste in the various spaces around the facilities).
Now, the wine here is not cheap, even for club members. The cheapest bottle I ever remember seeing was $28 at the club price, which probably puts it around $32ish if you buy it in the tasting room, & they go up from there. But GODDAM, that's some tasty wine. On the other hand, they have started bottling a pretty darn tasty "value" zin made from fruit that didn't quite make the cut for the higher-end wines. It's called Pesenti Red Velvet, will set you back a whopping $10 bottle, and for all that it's their "value" wine, I've had $30 bottles that I didn't enjoy as much.
So, again, I have no idea what it's like if you just stop by on your way through Paso, but the wine is amazing, better for the price than plenty of other places I've been, and the people have always been nothing but warm & friendly to us.Listed in: California Wineries

Great wines. Really, really, great wines. Really high $10 tasting fee, and the only wines worth purchasing are over $40 apiece. So if this is more your budget, I highly recommend it.

Very laid back, very generous pours, very gooood. After years of for some reason or another of not getting there, we finally did and were not disappointed in the least.
Turley lived up to all the hype, better than the majority of most Hollywood summer "blockbusters". The staff was friendly, smiling and informative, almost to the point where we felt like old time regulars.
Although all of the available tastings were from their local vintages (which is to be expected) they did also offer their whole library of wines for sale from the Napa region too.
While I agree the area has grown leaps and bounds since its onset, luckily it still has a long way to go before it catches up to the pretentiousness of some Napa wineries and like so many others, I hope they can hold onto that old school mystique.Listed in: No Reservations (Mini Tour)

We learned that this winery is actually in Northern California (Contra Costa), but they also have a winery in Templeton (near Paso). The draw here is their old vine zins and they really talk it up. The tasting room is not much to look at and was quite small. It probably can only accommodate about 15 people comfortably.
Since I am partial to red zins, this place was especially attractive to me. It turned out their reputation was justified as I really liked their zins. We ended up with a couple of bottle of the 06 Zinfandel Duarte. The taste cost $10, but you get to keep the glass. -

Apparently, the new trend in Paso is Rhone Blends-- everywhere we went, there was an abundance of syrahs and grenache... what is a zin girl to do?
Yay for Turley! This place makes quality wine from old vine zins.
The tasting room is small and intimate. Our pourer was nice. I was sold on the Presenti zin although the Dusi Ranch was great as well. The wines are a bit pricey, but with good wines always comes a price.Listed in: I seriously wine a lot!

This place makes good wines. They know it. They like to let you know it.
The wines are on the pricier side. The tasting room is tiny, and the wait list for their club (as they will tout to you) is 2 years long.
It's a guilty pleasure, but we like going, simply for the wines. The second visit they were less pretentious, but still, we were assured the wine would taste better if we lay it down (aka age it for a few months). My sister still likes to tease us about that.
Who cares. The wine is great.Listed in: Paso Robles Wineries I've…

Review from Kevan M.
Fantastic wine only goes so far in my book. True, Turley offers some of the best Zinfandel in the region & their facility is nice but:
1. their prices are high - with some bottles climbing above $60 a bottle they'd better be awesome wines! + they ask for a $10 tasting fee when I went during Zin fest.
2. during my visit the staff was neither welcoming nor especially friendly. After tasting, we were waiting for the remaining members of our party outside the crowded tasting room and one of the staff came out and told us they were closed.
I think their wine club policy (sign up on a waiting list to be on the mailing list) sums up the attitude well here. -

I had some time to myself down the coast and thought I'd fit in a Saturday afternoon tasting. I got a late start, and spent too much time in the hills looking for a winery that happened to close early. On the way back down to 46 I happened upon Turley, and knowing nothing about them popped in hoping they'd be gracious enough to set me up with some pours.
I've learned that I'm a bit averse to zins, and was briefly disappointed to see that this was their specialty, but I'm open-minded and thought I'd give these a whirl. I was skeptical, starting with the young vine "Juvenile," which confirmed my frustration with the overwhelming flavors that ride on this varietal. But I settled comfortably into "Old Vines," which I brought home with me for $28. I also enjoyed the "Dusi" and "Perenti," but as they were priced out of my range, I made a point of enjoying the generous pours. -
Review from Shanna K.
Honestly, I just wasn't that impressed. I'm not a huge fan of Zin to begin with so YMMV but this go round (Nov 08) I preferred Adelaida's Zin over any of Turley's. Turley did have a nice Grenache that they had just started experimenting with, though... and we liked that.
I agree about the dark tasting room, it's a bit oppressive... however the woman pouring for us was perfectly pleasant.
Probably another required stop when you're in town but, as with Justin, I won't be rushing back... -

Best Zins in the world.
Pricey but worth every cent. You can;t even go wrong with their "bargain" priced zin - the juvenile for $50. It's simply that good.
I'm a huge zin fan and drink lots and lots of zins, I havent found too many other places with this caliber of taste. My taste may differ from yours, so I recommend going there and not paying attention to price but to you taste buds. -

I'm not a wine drinker because I'm actually allergic to alcohol, so this review is based off the winery scenery and setting. Turley Wine Cellars in Paso Robles is very beautiful. The tasting room is smaller compared to the other vineyards that we visited that day, but it has a very rustic feel to it! According to my boyfriend he says "this is what a tasting room should be like".
If you get a chance to take a walk into the vineyard, you'll really enjoy the view! It's beautiful! -

We've been club (mailing list) members for years and hope to be for many more. I'm a Zin fan, sure... but I can not get enough of their Petite.
We knew from many years ago that there was just a bit of pretension to the place. A waiting list to get on the mailing list... really?
The wine is worth it all. The new tasting room is very well done. This was not our first visit. The woman who poured for us was downright surly at first. The longer we stayed and drank and purchased, the nicer she became. She actually warmed up considerably once we brought Zeke into the tasting room (we never assume and always ask first).
So in sum, not a bad experience... actually a nice one. I can see how some would really be turned-off by this place. But, oh, the Petite!

We got there around 10am and they only had a few customers. We had friendly, helpful, attentive service. The ladies behind the counter asked us all about ourselves, were eager to talk all about their vineyard and process (they dry farm, which is fascinating), and gave us tips on other places to go as well. Perhaps the trick is to get there early?
The wine itself was excellent, as many here have noted. They also let us taste something not on the tasting menu (which we ended up purchasing). They did not waive the tasting fee despite purchasing a LOT of wine, but that seems to be the trend now. -

Their Zins are really good. And, they know it. Hence their prices, the crowds and the two year wait list to get on their mailing list.
Ever since my boyfriend & I enjoyed a bottle of the Rattlesnake Ridge Zin at Masa's in SF on our 1 yr anniversary, I have been intrigued by their hard to get Zins.
I particularly enjoyed the Juvenile ($22) and the Pesenti ($38) on this visit. -

This is one of the oldest wineries in the area. Only zin here--4 of them for the tasting, and they were all pretty expensive. I think we got to keep the glasses. I preferred the zin at the other Paso Robles places, but this wasn't bad--just maybe overwhelming to have all four at once. The pourer didn't talk about the wine too much.
There was construction going on at the moment, so I wouldn't picnic here. The wine and tasting was so-so, and I would try another place in the area before returning. -

(Visited just after opening, mid-October 2008, Harvest Wine Festival)
What has become one of the icons of zinfandel was an absolute disappointment. The hours are early compared to everyone else in town, so they did make a good place to start though. They showcased four wines the day I was there, and it appeared they were doing a brisk business, even at 9:45 AM. Now I knew this place was known for zin. But even the Dusi Vineyard zin - which every zin I have had sourced from there before or since was excellent - was just "good" at Turley. And at their price, I would definitely seek it elsewhere.
Such a disappointment.. but I don't think I was expecting too much either. Be that as it may, I know they have made plenty of great zins that I wasn't able to taste on my visit. But between the lackluster wines I did taste (per price point) and poor customer service, for a tasting room experience, it was a bust. Fair but exuberantly priced wines I can accept. But coupled with a lack of cordiality and even the feeling of being ignored 15 minutes after opening makes me think I won't be returning. -

My favorite California Zinfandel! A must every time I'm in the Paso Robles area. I love, love, love this place. Their zins are high in alcohol without the taste. My favs are the Ueberroth, Hayne and Juvenile. I never leave this place without spending $400. This is one of the few tasting rooms that actually charge a tasting fee ($10) and I honestly think it's quite worth it for the quality wines they're serving. The tasting room is small and smells a little musty the last time I visited back in 2009 but the wine is absolutely outstanding. (I've heard they remodeled so I'll update once I see the new place).

I recently visited Turley. The group I came with were fans, so, . . . . . what the hey.
Nice establishment.. I found wines I enjoyed. All in all I bought a couple of cases of 3 wines I liked. The young man who served our group was a peach and took good care of us. Unfortunately, I found troubling that folks in my party had been waiting over 2 years to get on their wine list. And appeared there was some back biting going on amongst the staff, and one rather curt gal taking our order wanted to charge me the $10 tasting fee after spending over $300 there. I thought that was heavy handed. Hopefully management has worked it out.
Good wines, expected prices, well worth the stop
PS: . . . they have a very nice Zin blend table wine for $10 there, from
their winery in Atascadero. It's a good value.

Yes they are pricey but oh what quality zins! Got a wonderful tour from Pat right in the middle of the harvest. Actually got to watch someone test samples of grapes in baggies to determine in they were ready to be picked. Of all the vino that I tasted I liked the Pesenti the best.

You don't come by this place accidentally, you come because you've had their wines and you liked them so you figure checking them out in person is worthwhile. And it is.
We tried five Turley Zindandels: Duarte, Pesenti, Dusi, Ueberroth, and Earthquake, plus the Pesenti Petite Sirah. Only the Petite Sirah was off. Nice staff, good value for $10 plus the glass, and they give you a nice Wine Tote when you buy multiple bottles. We'll be back. -

So I may be viewed as slightly biased in that I am partial to wines from the area in which I was raised, but this is by far the best zinfandel wine I have ever tasted. And yes, I've had many zinfandels from around California.
Tasting Information:
For those on a budget while wine tasting, this may not be the place for you. The fee is $10 / person - rather high for the Paso wine region, however you do get to keep your glass as a nice memento. Turley just opened its brand new tasting room (same location), and the new place is much bigger than the old room, so you can finally bring a good sized group with you. From my several experiences tasting there (yes, I am on the wine club), the staff have always been friendly and the wines exceptional. You only get to taste 4 of the wines for a tasting, and unfortunately the best gems on the list are not one of those 4. But to be honest, I have never been disappointed by any wine I have tasted there.
Personal favorites: Ueberroth & Dogtown. Neither of these are by any means cheap, but if you like a big, bold zinfandel than you've found the right place. All Turley wines tend to be fairly high in alcohol content, but then again, they are zinfandels...
I just attended my first wine pick-up party for the fall release 2009, and let me tell you it was the best time I've had there...ever. The place is only open to wine club members and their guests that day, and it's all-you-can enjoy Turley wines, amazing catered food (yes, the pizza is declicious!), live music, and plenty of people having a great time. Let's just say we picked up more than my wine club shipment's worth of wine... The scenery is beautiful there, and on a sunny day even better to enjoy a picnic while there.
As an avid wine taster, I've been to lots of places both in the Paso area as well as up north in Napa and Sonoma counties. I have yet to find another winery where I can go on and on and on and on....about every single wine there. The best part about the wine club? You actually get to pick which wines you want in each shipment. Oh yeah...and the pick-up party is definitely worth being a member. Just make sure to sign up quick---the wait time to join can be over a year! -
