I wasn't sure what to expect when I came here, but I was definitely surprised. The food was delicious and more than fairly priced.
They bring you what you order and you can cook it to your liking.
Definitely a great spot for first dates or people looking for something new and different to do in San Diego.
This was our first time back since the management changed -- we've been regulars at the Old Turf Club previously and have been to the Riviera Room about 3 or 4 times since. I have no interest in the success of either restaurant and appreciate that we have some competition in San Diego, I think it ultimately benefits the public.
Right off the bat we got a taste of the lacking service when the door guy said there would be a wait for a table for two (no problem, always to be expected) and that things were a little chaotic tonight (there was no queue of groups at the door, we were the only ones waiting and all the tables and chairs were taken). Compared to old Turf Club glory days of past there the lobby would be full, the bar would be full and people would be standing behind the chairs too. It actually seemed to us like a slow night.
The atmosphere is pretty much exactly the same -- they do have a new jukebox -- unfortunately a lot of the rockabilly, mod and ska music was replaced with 60s and classic rock - not my thing. There seemed to be lots of gaps where people's selections ran out and it was just silent for a half hour.
We didn't order any drinks this time but we observed the bar while we were waiting to be seated. The bartenders seem to be lacking in the flair and showmanship of drink preparation. Drink sizes seemed average for the $8-9 mixed drink price tag.
Food was same as before (menu is exact as well). We ordered sirloins with side salads. The side salads are portioned larger than previous and were good. There seemed to be less butter/garlic on the garlic bread. Prices are exactly the same as well. Tons of seasonings, sauces, salt and pepper by the grill. They even have a one I was pretty sure was Old Bay -- props on that.
The service met expectations if however lacking a little cordiality. Our server was prompt on refilling sodas and clearing dishes.
VS Riviera Room: I would say bang for your buck value-wise Turf Club and Riviera Room are on par even though the original Turf Club has a less extensive menu. I favor the atmosphere at the Riviera Room even though Turf Club has an authentic old school divey feel to it and Riviera has a modern swank to it. Turf Club gets the edge on location, obviously Golden Hill is a more centrally located area closer to downtown and central San Diego. If you have a large group Riviera Room is probably the better way to go, but if you are at four or less either restaurant would be a good selection.
Overall I would give Turf Club a solid 3 stars, with a plus or minus a half star depending on the service.
The way to my heart is a great steak, stiff drinks, and amazing people watching. This place runs the gamut with its clientele, from the old eye patch wearing to the young hipster types.
I was a bit nervous about cooking my own steak, but dog gone-it, it turned out delicious. Makes you not even care that what is considered a side dish is just a small bowl of lettuce, and a slice of bread. I must say, their ranch dressing is darn tasty. I definitely trust their meat selection since they give you a raw steak to cook how you like it.
The decor is cheesy, the staff is friendly and answer dumb questions, like "How rare is too rare?" and the drinks are potent.
It's good steak joint that lacks pretension and has great ambiance. And the smell stays with you all night.
Went here again with some friends and had a total blast. Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere!!

Ate at the Turf Club for the first time in years, and I'm happy to report that it hasn't changed. Friendly staff, fantastic ambiance, and strong, tasty drinks make for a delightful dinner experience.
We sat at one of the best seats in the house -- a little corner booth facing the grill, which allowed us to take in everyone (hipsters, old couples and average Joes alike), all cozied up to the communal grill -- the great equalizer.
The jukebox was well-stocked and set at a volume conducive to conversation. The men's room is at the back -- small but clean; the need to wash your hands makes it a necessary visit after tending to whatever you've got on the grill.
It's such a treat to come here. The vibe is very mellow, yet vibrant. The wallpaper has pictures of cowboys wrangling horses -- so cool! Cooking your own steak is fun on the big grill. They also have an amazing Malbec that goes great with a nice steak. The music selection on the jukebox is pretty good too!
This is really a San Diego classic.
A friend at work suggested we eat here for dinner, I'm always down to try places I haven't been before, but he told me it's a grill your own steak joint. From what I understand, Turf Club has been in Golden Hill forever and the charming decor inside probably hasn't changed since it first opened.
My friend and I get there shortly after five and were the first customers there. We thought it was still closed because the second we stepped foot in the door, our eyes had to do a quick adjustment to the lack of bright lighting in there, this place is dark! We had to wait for the other three to get there before she would seat us, but no worries, we chilled at the bar.
I had a Cosmo for $7 or so bucks and I had to nurse that sucker because it was strong, but good stuff! After the rest arrived, we got seated at a booth that barely fit the five of us. I don't think they had any happy hour specials on drinks (nor food for that matter); they have a decent selection of specialty drinks that were all in the $7 to $8 price range which are all listed on their website.
They do, however, have daily specials, but I wasn't feelin' the pork loin which was the special of the day, I wanted steak! You can also order a side salad for $2.25, which all of us did. I got the surf & turf which came with an eight ounce steak and a skewer of two salmon chunks with green and red bell peppers. Whatever meat you order, you also get a good sized piece of garlic bread to throw on the grill.
My thoughts? Good stuff, specifically the meat. I wasn't impressed with the 'surf' part of my meal, but at least I know what to expect for next time and will stick with a larger sized steak. Why the four stars? The steak was good, I couldn't get enough of the garlic bread, prices are reasonable and I'm diggin' the vibe up in there. I'm a new fan and hope to go back there and bring more friends that can try it for the first time too, but only if they're willing to cook my steak for me. ; )
I love the fact that "Turf Club" keeps the grill on late, pours heavily on their drinks, and has that wonderful piano player on occasional Sundays. However, I have had bad service the last two times I have gone to the Turf Club. I went with a http://restaurant.com coupon about three months back, and the waitress gave horrible service to us. She was not attentive to drink levels, checking if we had everything we needed, or how we felt in general about anything at all. She was actually too wrapped up in the friends/family that came to visit her to even notice us. My friend, who was in our party of four, gave a poor review post the coupon use, which was followed with an assurance that this wouldn't happen again. Well, it didn't happen again, but something else did. I was refused service, indignantly! We went last night hoping to give the Turf Club another chance. When we (me, my girlfriend, and another friend) it occurred to me that I forgot something at my house. I walked back and then returned. When I came back I found my group at the bar. The plan was to grab a table, sit down and have some drinks, while waiting for a fourth friend to show up and join us. So, I asked my girlfriend why we weren't at a table and she told me the bouncer denied us a table. The reason was that we didn't have everyone in our party present so, we had to wait to seat everyone at once. This is normal for a restaurant to do, but only if it is busy. Last night was not busy (we went around 9:15), so I did,t understand why we couldn't have one of the four vacant tables that you would comfortably seat four people, or even the three of us at that. I figured I could reason with the guy and went to talk to him. It went something like this:
Me - Salutation
Bouncer - Salutation
Me - Hey, is it possible for us to get a table? I mean, we are waiting on a fourth but you know you would ultimately seat us at the same table if we are a party of three or a party of four.
Bouncer (snappy tone begins) - That's not true. Tables are open for first come first serve and if someone else get's it then you wouldn't.
Me - I understand that, but you mean to tell me we can't sit at the same table where he would sit when he shows up?
Bouncer - No, he can sit there but he won't be allowed to eat.
Me (astonished this is happening) - Did you just say, "he won't be allowed to eat"?!
Bouncer (stern) - You can have a table for three or you can have a table for four. Your call.
Me - It's the same table! I'm done with this.
We downed our drinks and left.
Where i stand is that I am very disheartened. I understand the concept of having a processes and procedures, but this situation lacks simple common sense. It was the same table whether three or four sat there. Additionally, the bouncer took a very offensive attitude, that was not appreciated.
Mmm...I just don't think this is my thing.
We had a large group for a birthday celebration, and there were other large groups there too. Made the grill quite crowded. The meat was good, but not great. Service, ok, but again, it was a busy night (which was slightly weird, since it was a Wednesday...)
Salad was out of this world good, but I think that might have been because I was famished and it was taking forever for my filet mignon to cook on the crowded grill.
Over all...this girl would rather grill at home.
How do you NOT love this place. An oldy and always a goody.
Just go, you will enjoy!
I don't know if it was the 2 martinis I had, the hour long wait or the smell of BBQed meat wafting in the air that whet my appetite, but that was seriously one tasty burger! Really unexpected.
The Turf Supper Club is such a cool place - it's got great ambiance, cheap food, stiff drinks and a unique concept. BBQing food on a communal in-door grill is such a cool way to facilitate socializing. I love this place.
Drawbacks: limited seating + massive crowds = waiting forever to be seated. Also, I was charged $14.50 for a rum and coke and a Bud Lite. I'm pretty sure I was mis-charged since my friend got his cocktail for much cheaper. Sucks. :/
Value is good considering you have to cook your own dinner once they bring you the raw meat. With the meat dishes, they bring you the piece of meat and french bread. It's best you order the veggie selection on the stick too so that your meal is balanced. Grilling at the common grill was fun, but can get a bit crowded. Wish they had a another grill or a bigger one. The decor is vintage 70's lounge. Was a really fun night! I was thrilled I got carded at the door because I'm 50 years old!
You will leave smelling like a brisket but it is worth every minute. A one of a kind experience, a must do if you visit San Diego. The pictures on here don't even do it justice.
You know when you leave work on a Friday and all you want is a stiff drink and a delicious dinner... go to the Turf Club! Always worth any wait, i love the Turf Club on a Friday with all the fun drinks and delicious cuts of meat.
We thought about taking our grandfather there, but new he would be confused at cooking his own food. It's nothing fancy, but so fun. Very retro and i always vote for the fillet and a side salad with a stiff martini.
Love this place! Get there early because it fills up quick.
Always a good place to grab a steak and a beer. I stop off here for a beer more often than I eat (it's close to home). Nice staff (Hey Matt!) and the Esquire Martini is deceptively strong (and Yummy).
One of our usual stops when the wife and I don't feel like cooking or just want to get out of the house.
Big Portion. Tasty.
You have to know how to grill before you go here or go with someone who is a grill master.
Very loud inside, not my kind of place.
I must admit I was a bit skeptical about entering the Turf Club, sketchy from the outside and I had to cook my own food?? But once inside my world was turned upside down.
With a vintage interior, full bar, and small grill in the center of the room I was right at home. The wait for a table was about an hour, even at 9pm, but the cheap, strong drinks held me over nicely.
I ordered the combo with the salmon skewer and steak - the perfect meal (with salad and garlic bread). The grill is really small, so I had to get in there with my elbows and fight for a spot. But the fight was worth it. An array of seasonings allows you to create the perfect blend. And, the big brown bottle of sauce on the side of the grill - soak your food in it - you'll thank me later.
The other "grill it yourself" restaurants have nothing on this place.
I came here with a friend of mine a year ago and I have to say that it was very interesting. First of all I couldn't find it because it's very easy to pass by, then when I entered, I thought it was closed because it was so dark and there weren't that many people. I had no idea what to do but the bartender and other workers were kind enough to give us directions. They took our drink orders and gave us the menus.
The food is so cheap and i love the idea of a community grill. The only bad thing is that it's dark so you can't really see how your meat is cooking and it's really easy to forget about your food while you enjoy the drinks and talking with friends. overall it was very fun and interesting (in a good way). i definitely want to go back again sometime soon
I chose to write an update, rather than edit my original review. I'm sure you're wondering why I would do that. Well, I'm glad you asked.
I'm writing an update and have decided to increase my rating to 5 stars for one reason, and one reason only! I'm sure you're probably wondering what that reason is. Again, thank you for asking and I'm glad your paying attention. After my review yesterday, someone who I can only assume owns or manages the Turf Club sent me a message and thanked me for my kind words. Not only were my kudos acknowledged, but my comment about the lack of seafood was also addressed. In my opinion, the message I received yesterday in regards to my post certain goes far above and beyond customer service. You can most certainly bet I am now and will forever be a loyal customer of the Turf Club!

Nice dive. Dark, chill atmosphere. I dig the vibe of the place.
They got a niche here. You order some food and they give it to you raw. Then you just throw it on the communal grill and cook it yourself! That's smart for them if you ask me, since they don't have to hire a cook. However, not so smart for the customer if they don't cook it well.
And the grill is not very huge and also not very hot. Takes a good ass while to cook and if you want it well done, you might want to grab a few drinks to pass the time. The food is good though, after all is said and done. It's a cool place to hang out with some friends and chat with others while your steak simmers. There's also a full bar to buzz you up a bit during your wait.
Only thing is, this place is not that big and can get crowded quickly. Probably best to hit the place with a smaller party of 4-5 people. It does get cramped hovering over the grill at times too.
Also, make sure you know where you place your food on the grill because so many things get thrown around on there you can lose sight of where you put your stuff(especially if you're tipsy). Throw a toothpick or something on your grub so you know where its at.
What else to say about this place that hasn't been said. Fantastic drinks, affordable steaks in a loungy environment. If you come on a sunday, they have a guy who plays piano at 7 too!
I heard crazy rumors after leaving town that so had the Turf Club. Not so. Same bar, same menu, some of the same waitstaff.
The food is still cheap, and the decorations are still retro cool.
PROs
Cheap steaks
Cheap and Awesome Drinks
Great place to hang out with your friends
CONs
STOP WATCHING YOUR STEAK COOK, SIT DOWN AND ENJOY YOUR BEVERAGE!!!
Being treated like I don't know the Supper Club or the neighborhood by the door guy
So effing crowded that the waitress took forever with a glass of wine that was unwanted by the time it was received, along with the bill
You can only hear what half of your party is talking about
While there are more Cons on my list than Pros, I'd still come back again, but on a less busy night and with all of my group in tow as to not get the the belittling speech by the front door guy. The Turf Club still holds a special place in my heart, regardless of who is running it. And in this economy, or San Diego's economy for that matter, best bang for your buck.

The cocktail list at Turf Supper packs a cool collection of classic drinks that the Rat Pack would tip their hat to: the martini, Manhattan, side car, and old fashioned are a few of the timeless classics here. The glasses and servings for alcohol are large; our hero is grateful, his liver isn't.
Our hero finds the communal grilling experience here to be intimate, as it is pretty much impossible to cook here without bumping elbows or other bodily parts with people. There aren't a lot of other flavorings to add to steaks here: BBQ sauce, hot sauce, salt, and pepper. That doesn't stop other people from spilling BBQ sauce all over the grill and getting your sirloin caught in the salty crossfire of a shaker on the cramped grill.
Why only three stars? Out of all the "grill your own meat" concept restaurants in San Diego, Turf Supper Club ranks lowest on the list after Gaslamp Strip Club and Riviera Supper Club. The old mantra of "you get what you pay for" applies here, and the difference in service, menu choices, and (most significantly) the decor and ambiance is very apparent. However, Turf Supper Club still remains #1 for value and quaint hipsteresque charm in their dining niche.
PROS:
- Less than $7 for a burger and only $11.25 for surf and turf makes this a very affordable restaurant to dine at.
- Cool retro theme and a charmingly 40's era date place.
CONS:
- Good cocktail list.
- The very dim red lighting makes it difficult to see how well cooked your meat is. You'll have to live dangerously and just put it in your mouth to see how it feels.
- The only side available is a salad, and as Homer Simpson once said, "you don't win friends with salad". (http://saladsimpsons.y...)
The Turf Club is in my old stomping ground of Golden Hill..
I used to live right down C street from it. We used to come here for drinks all the time.. the neighborhood and area have gotten nicer and safer as well. The place itself really hasn't changed too much.. maybe different managers or owners but nothing you'd really notice. The menu seems to be the same and the prices to boot (which is an added bonus in these tough times)!
I have to say.. my review won't be too much different from the ones already on here but I just wanted to put my spin on it I guess.
For me this place is great. It's cheap, it's in a great neighborhood, it is a total dive/hole in the wall type place (which is right up my alley), and it is filled with "cooler than you" type people who are always entertaining.. (I love to people watch and to just observe)..
I read something on one of the reviews that really nailed it.. Kristen G. put "STOP WATCHING YOUR STEAK COOK, SIT DOWN AND ENJOY YOUR BEVERAGE!!!".... So true.. I'm really.. How hard is it to drop it on the grill, throw on some salt/pepper or whatever and walk away.. It's not going anywhere, just come back, flip it and get on with things...
Overall this is a neighborhood type place for laid back people.. It's cheap, decent food, and has a great vibe.. for me that is pretty much all I need.. but for the love of God stop hovering around the grill and my seat which happens to be right next to it....
Great fun atmosphere, good quality meat, make it your way to perfection, very reasonable prices. lets not forget their wide variety of alchoholic spirits at half the cost of many other bars. Only downside is that many other people have discovered this treasure and you will oftentimes have to stand up without a place to sit for the better part of a half hour.
Turf club rocks. Steaks are cheap; slow cooking means good, relaxed conversation. A great place to wind the night away.
Two comments to the bartender with the green/blue hair. 1 If you're going to be inked up and wear a chain around your neck, don't put a Tiffany & Co. silver lock on it. Totally kills the bad-ass image you got. 2 If I'm waving my arms and calling that means I'd like a drink.
Turf Supper Club!
This place is awesome for several reasons..
For starters the ambiance is perfect .. for a group , for a gf, for a random partner... this place has D vibe...
On entering this place, it was dark... infront of me was a well balanced bar with couple of bar seats just perfect in number....
anyways... we headed to the grill section of the club and there were MANY people just waiting to cook and get that yummy steak down...
we were seated near the grill area and a waitress shortly assisted us.....
I settled for my usual cocktail...and ordered for a sirloin steak ...
within a couple of mins we were given the raw steaks which we cooked by the grillside....
I prefer my steak well-cooked..whilst my friend finished off grilling soon.. I was waiting to get done...
its a good place to meetup some new people..I'd a small incidence there where this female; pretty decent; came up and "stroke"d a random conversation..anyways lets not get into the details...
ultimately...the steak was awesome....drinks were good...service was a +, and price was darn reasonable...;2 steaks, 1 drink = 26$
im def. going here again!
Well, since we live a couple of blocks away, the Turf used to be our old standard. And for good reason since the food was always top quality and the staff were always friendly.
But since management has changed and the staff has changed a little, it's not the same, in a bad way. For instance, my husband got the burger today and he said that the meat didn't seem to be top quality like before. And the staff! So very surly! And I didn't even catch a buzz from my 2 Sneaky Tikis! Where's the rum?
Sadly, I'm thinking it might be Hamilton's for us from now on.
This is why I like the Turf Club. Its good in the way that old ladies in vintage clothes are cooler that teenagers in clothes from Hot Topic. Its good because food tastes better from a dirty greasy grill. Its good cause everyone looks better in dim-yellowy light. And nothing on the juke box is on the radio (you know what I mean). The menu is nice short and to the point, the bread is way too big, and thats a good thing because its like when your mom said dont fill up on bread and now you can be like Ha Ha Ha, I'm doing it anyhow!
And yes, just like everyone else probably mentioned, you can cook your own meat, but you can do that a lot of other places too these days, but I prefer to cook mine (portabella mushroom for the veggies) here.
Dark and swanky.
Vintage and cool.
Hip and comfy.
When I first got here, I was already sold on the vibe of the place by the restaurant's neon sign. It's like time stopped for this place and everywhere around it just moved on.
When you walk in, the ambiance kept that same feeling all the way through.....starting with the juke box you first notice (and the music it's playing), to the oh so vintage bar set up, to the leather crescent-shaped booths. I liked the feeling of going back in time to simpler days.
Concept for this restaurant:
It's kind of like a simple steakhouse where you cook your own meat at a communal grill shared by all in the center of this joint. Menu is simple and price really reasonable. Keep in mind though you'll be given the food in its uncooked form and be doing all of the work in cooking your own meal!
Do your thing. Either hang out by the grill and watch your food cook or leave it there and hang out at your table. Either way enjoy a cocktail or two with the company of your friends or make new ones by the grill....you got alot of time to kill before your stuff is fully cooked anyway. Enjoy the moment. It's like backyard barbecuing meets swanky lounge here. So cool!
Negatives:
-It's a small joint and can get pretty tight in there already so I wouldn't necessarily come with a large group. Besides, it's more of an intimate vibe in here and you kinda lose that with a too large of group.
-If you're grilling, then you'll probably leave this place smelling like it!
-You're handling raw meat, so be careful handling it! Wash your hands and cook your food thoroughly.
All in all, I love this place for its overall vibe and uniqueness. When I said dark and swanky, I really meant it!
My favorite! The drinks are stiff (great martinis) and the meat is tasty. So you smell like a BBQ for days afterward, so what? The only downside is the long wait (and feeling guilty if you get there early enough to sit down and people start piling in staring at the back of your head) but with so few tables, there's no other way. Worth every minute of the wait though. Keep yourself cozy with a beverage!
Yes... worth the wait! Love the grill. Portobello mushrooms are the best! Great drinks. Fun dive. Bring lots of friends. Dark, cool, understated.
Where did the stiff drinks go?
:*(
This place used to have bomb martinis with a good amount of liquor; these days you appear to get an exact 1.5 oz pour for the standard $9.
Notwithstanding, the food and ambiance makes it worthwhile to try.
After hearing so much about the Turf Supper Club experience, I was excited to be able to finally give this self-service model for myself. The Yelp event at Riviera was the only other time I had checked it out but under the circumstances I don't think I really got the full experience. It took a little while to get a table since the place was packed, but when we finally did, the waitress kindly explained the handful of menu items and how everything worked.
I decided to go with the sirloin burger, which was served with the standard lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. After spending about 10 minutes at the warm grill, I was finally able to cook it to a nice rareness and slid the patty onto the sandwich. Despite keeping it as rare as possible, the burger still lacked a great deal of flavor, which I attempted to remedy with some mayo. Honestly, at the end of the day, there really wasn't anything very special about it all. It was just a burger that wasn't served with any fries.
I really do see more cons than pros with places like this. One of the glaring issues is trying to fight for a standing spot over a medium heat grill while trying to socialize with your friends. The problem is that everybody's food will finish at a different time and ultimately, your friends will either have to wait till your food finishes, or you have to wait for them to finish theirs. Not overly exciting if you ask me.
After finally being able to experience the whole cook-your-own meal-and-tip-us thing, I'm not totally convinced that it's all it's cracked up to be. To be honest, I could have made a much more satisfying burger in my backyard and fed our whole group for a fraction of what we paid. To be fair, as a restaurant, the food is very affordable. What's more, no taxed is charged since they don't actually cook anything for you, saving you an extra few dollars. Even so, I wasn't overly impressed with the whole experience and really don't see what all the fuss is about. Why would I go out to eat if I can make the exact same thing (but better) with the same friends at home, and for a fraction of the cost?
Food: 5/10
Service: 5/10
Price: $
Atmosphere: 6/10
Just wanted to say that we recently started going back to the turf club since it has been taken over by the new owners and it wasn't what we expected.
The vibe was the same, the menu was the same and most of the staff was the same (but nicer)!
We tried to hold out on coming back, but we realized that we will always love the turf in our neighborhood!

Turf club is located in a part of town I do not frequently hit up. So getting to the restaurant was half the fun; it felt like I was going to another part of the world. I love the quaint houses and the view of downtown.
At the door, we are greated and our I'D's checked. I didn't know you had to be over 21, but I liked that. The atmosphere is dark and old school, complete with red leather booths and a juke box (which has an interesting selection of music not usually my taste but songs are only 25 cents each.). Usually there is a long wait, but we snagged a table within minutes.
I don't usually say this, but after 2 martini's I was feeling toasty. The bar is generous with the pour. My glass was the perfect shape and size and the straight up with olives glided down my throat with ease.
The steak portion is hearty and not badly priced and you get a jumbo piece of bread. The vegetable kabob's are good too. My complaint about the food is that there aren't any sides. I was hoping for some mac n cheeze or onion rings or somethin. Also, its frustrating if you over cook your steak b/c its not like you can send it back b/c you are the one who cooked it.
The crowd is actually not obnoxious like you might think. I didn't get annoyed with the people there, they seemed older and not sscenster or or trying to act cool at all. All in all, I'm pleasantly pleased with the Turf Club and look forward to coming back.
I like the atmosphere, the relaxed vibe, very down-to-earth place. The servers and bartenders are really chill too.
Turf Club is always a hit when I have friends in town! A very chill atmosphere and a Juke Box where you can go crazy with. Packed on the weekends and is always filled with all kinds of crowd. ONE GRILL, bunch of people standing around cooking their own supper, now how fun is that when you cook your own food to your desire while chatting it up with strangers. The waitress freaking rocks, and the bar is always filled. One thing that bugs is looking for parking so if you're going to come with some friends carpool otherwise drive a small car so you can at least find a small spot to fit into into.
Menu-
Yummy garlic bread comes with your choice of
Steak
Salmon Kabobs
Chicken Kabobs
I forgot what else they have but it's good and big enough for the reasonable price.
