3 reviews for Tucson Museum of Art
This place is a joke. First of all, it's so small that hardly any art can fit in it, the design is from the 70's so expect curved interior walkways ala Guggenheim (NYC). What art that is here usually deals with dumb cowboys or cheap abstract "ism" done by some wealthy recluse who thinks their art is fabulous. They spend about $23 million on an extension, that is four feet by 8 feet it seems, just to get in a small overpriced art store & toilet inside. Art snobs only go here, judging from the strong perfume smell. Staff are volunteer snobbish senior citizens who are sticklers for detail, "Sonny, wear your art sticker at ALL times!"
They should tear the whole place down and build a real Museum of Art but in Tucson, that would take 75 years and the art would probably offend everyone.

Perhaps, judging from the other three reviews, I'm being jaded by the exhibit I just saw. I want to give this place four stars, but on thinking of the entirety of the collection displayed, I must adjust it to three.
The Maynard Dixon exhibit was awesome, though I do feel the need to level and say that I will always have a soft spot for Western American art. That said, I really enjoy the downward spiral - it does create more exhibition space than one would expect looking at it from the street. I'm from Minneapolis, and we have a really formidable Asian Art collection, so I was unimpressed with Tucson's (though I do love the Chinese sleeve dancer sculptures), but the PreColumbian exhibit in the Stevens House was really nice, and the Photography in the bottom of the main building (I don't know if it was a temporary exhibit or part of the permanent collection) was great, too. I can see that it is a very limited collection, but what they do have is impressive. It would be nice to see them expand somehow and add to their collection to have more art of the same or better quality.

Tucson deserves better. The architecture is fine but the permanent collection is not up to snuff with a community nearing 1 million. They do however on occasion have a good show or two but overall a very safe uninspiring place.
