Do not miss the Cucumber Melon Gazpacho.
This is hands down the best place to eat in Davis. No, it isn't inexpensive, and the plates can seem small, but the food is deeply satisfying ... so Splurge a little.
When they are on the menu the Bacon Wrapped dates are a must, love the gazpacho (both the Cuke Melon, and the Bing Cherry which was so briefly available, but so wonderful ...) and the Cubano sandwich - The Mojo sauce alone makes it a worthy choice, but every aspect of it is perfection.
Thought I'd post under this entry since this the title also given on daviswiki.
I went here with my mom, we shared an appetizer (bacon-wrapped dates stuffed with chevre and a slice of pink lady apple), soup (portugese chicken), entree (berkshire pork hash cakes), dessert (caramel apple tart with ice cream). This came out to $42.
Seriously!?!
This is way over-priced given the portion sizes, which were indeed tiny. Especially the soup, I couldn't believe how little soup there actually was in that bizarre excuse for a bowl. Try an extremely shallow dish or a moderately deep plate. Also, $8 for 3 dates? ... come on. $14 for 2 hash cakes with a 2 in diameter and a tiny pile of what looked like vegetable shavings? The poached eggs were the only things that redeemed the size of that dish.
Taste-wise, it was fine - not amazing, but fine. However, this place definitely fills a niche that Davis otherwise lacks which is why it gets away with the pricing.
Decor is nice. Ambience is nice. Servers are nice.
I'm thinking the best bang for your buck would be to order from the small plates. but it's not a place I as a college student would go to splurge on. Let your parents take you, in other words...
This is, by far, my favorite little restaurant in Davis--it seems more like a restaurant in the evening, than a cafe. It feels like a little piece of the Mediterranean found its way to the bottom of G Street in Davis. The front patio is a lit in the evenings by sparkly balls of light that hang from the branches of a big tree that seems to nestle the few tables of diners together in an intimate environment outside; that combined with the warmth of Davis in the summer is not to be missed.
But the real highlight is the food and wine--both tied in first place for me. The food is simple, whole, and delicious. They put together wine flights of different varieties that are fantastic. Oh, and I almost forgot, they have a one whole page of the menu dedicated to cheese alone! When you order a selection of cheese it is served on a white place with a slices dark, raisin-walnut bread, huge golden raisins, sauteed blanches almonds in herbs and olive oil, and olive oil for dipping, in addition to the cheese, itself.
Last night I went with my fiance, my younger brother and my dad, the latter two were visiting us in Davis for the first time. My dad, who is a world traveler, was amazed at both Davis, in general, and Tucos. The food was great--he had whole roasted sardines, which look nothing like you might expect, but more like inch-thick, six-inch-long whole fish. I had the poached halibut on over a sort of bread soup, which was delicious, with thin strips of grated green and yellow veggies (squash maybe). Doug has a Brazilian stew served with rice and some veggies. Brent had salmon that he loved.
Tucos provides the food, wine and atmosphere that I have come to yearn. Lucky for us living in Davis, we have a little slice of the Mediterranean here to enjoy.
staff was helpful and seemed fairly knowledgeable about wine. i'm generally skeptical of people who seem to know a lot about wine. i used to be on a bottle per day diet of wine on and off for years. so i think i've drank my share of wine, and i still don't consider myself anything remotely close to a wine expert. bottom line is that it tastes good and gets the job done: gets the girl drunk. jokes. i was in tuscos for only like 3 mintues at 9pm, looking for a bottle of malbec, my current fav flav. i would've bought it except the 1 bottle in stock was $150. the staff guy told me the lowest they stock is $20 bottles. anyway, the next time i'm in davis, i'd like to give tucos a proper visit. the 4 stars is for future expectations.
