The restaurant sign may say "Catfish Haven", but it ought to read "Fried Food Heaven!" My wife and I had decided to give this nondescript joint a try based on the number of cars and trucks we saw in the parking lot, even before we saw the good review it got as a catfish restaurant in the Star Telegram.
The good stuff started with a bowl of pinto beans and a small basket of fried hushpuppies for an appetizer. Personally, I could have been happy for a meal of these two items alone. The flavorable fried cornmeal of the hushpuppies was great with the thick, slightly spicy pinto beans.
My wife and I had the Friday special of two long pieces of catfish and two sides. We both chose the "real mashed potatoes" and she had a bowl of green beans, with bigs chunks of bacon, onions and tomatoes throughout. I chose a salad which was a trip to a small salad bar and a choice of cabbage or iceberg lettuce to which you can add cherry tomatoes, big cuts of cucumbers, bacon bits and croutons. There were several choices of dressings. I chose the House Dressing of honey mustard and bacon. Definitely not lo-cal. We both loved the flavorable green beans, but the mashed potates were very bland, though definitely from "real" potatoes.
Finally we got around to the catfish. The planks of fish were coated with heavily cornbreaded batter on the outside, then fried to a crisp crunch. The interior fish was flaky and warm. While not much on presentation,  the whole lunch special was $5.99 each, a dollar less than the normal menu price. Cyndy, our server was nice and kept the ice tea full. As I said the restaurant is not fancy, but I couldn't imagine a better bargain, and we found the to meet our criteria of cafe soulfood. Great tasting, inexpensive and probably bad for your health. Need I say more!
Well, I will say that we are going back to try out their breakfasts and they mentioned they had Fried Gator Bites and Quail Kabobs as new items on the menu. The menu also said to try their new appetizers, Breaded Pepper Jack Cheese. Fried Pickles, Fried Squash, Fried Mushrooms and Fried Green Tomatoes. And that's what we plan to do!
