The spot on 1st had been on my radar, but I never made it. When I walked by here last weekend, I decided this would be one of my rare out of office lunches soon.

Upon entering, like Irene noted, it was hot as could be. I almost decided to not sit down and eat a hot pie, but since I managed to never eat here and I walked from Union Sq, I went for it. Glad I did. The nice ginger headed gal working the counter suggested I try the basic meat pie as a good introduction to the shop. It was $5, filling, and another great cheap food addition to the hood. I had my eye on the curry pie, but it was just too hot to go there. The Chili Peppers were on the stereo which made the food and setting even spicer.

Oh and while I was in there, a repairman came in to work on the AC, so don't let the heat deter you from coming, I think they are on top of the situation.

My rating from my original review doesn't change. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion - that's what Yelp is for (see H. W.'s review) and it's also up to the reader to use their own discernment when reading these reviews. Service plays into my rating as much as the food does.

I confirmed that the cake I bought last time was spoiled. Tuck Shop never bothered to respond to an email I sent to the address listed on their website. It was weeks before I had time to go to the shop again during open hours to rectify the situation. I know they got my email because they invited me to become a fan on Facebook and also followed me on Twitter. Chances of me checking any of the Tuck Shops again are close to nil given my other options in the hood but I won't say I'll never step foot into another one again.

Great friendly Australian service.

In the last couple of months I have walked past Tuck Shop several times and was intrigued by the idea of an Australian eatery, never having been to Australia and never having eaten anything particularly "Australian" (unless of course you count that one time I went to Outback Steakhouse). Regardless, I never bothered to give it a try since the menu said that they served "pie" which I assumed to be some sort of fancy Australian pizza. Lo and behold, this was not the case, Tuck Shop does not offer anything that resembles pizza, instead they serve fabulous home cooked meat pies. There were several choices which peeked my interest, but in the end I went with the traditional beef pie. I think it can best be described as the best sloppy joe you've ever had in a pie. I cannot wait to try the other pies and at $5-$6 each I can afford to indulge myself with a little comfort food.

i was already in love with the 1st and 1st location, but now it's even closer to my house, i think i've found heaven.

1st stop Bua, 2nd stop meat pies.  actually for me, it's non-meat pies since i'm a veggie.

vegetable pie = goodness.  veggie chili pie = not as good.

I wanted to give this place 6 stars but was limited by the yelp system. Irene H and others who gave it any less than 4 stars need to STFU. Elite my @ass.

Yes, it's THAT good. It is pretty much heaven in a conveniently digestible form. It is gourmet cuisine in a working man's package.

If there is a word that can describe my taste in all things consumer, it is this: value. I'm not a foodie that follows celeb chefs and revels in the fact that I can rattle off names and places (that are all staffed by immigrant workers while the head chef is gallavanting on his yacht in St. Tropez by the way). No, that's not me. Because ultimately, what is purchasing really about? It's about getting your dollar's worth. And if you're too busy worrying about how it reflects on you in the social hierarchy, well--you have problems, my friend.

That diatribe aside, tuck shop is a fantastic value. $5 for meatpies, $3 for sausage rolls, $2 for fantastic drinks such as my personal favorite the ginger fizz. And you will without a shadow of a doubt leave full and satisfied. This is the quintessential "ah, that really hit the spot" meal.

And look, I don't say this haphazardly. I come from a family that owned two restaurants for 20 years. I've traveled over 20 different countries and ate street food (frequently, almost to an unhealthy degree) in every one of them. I grew up in Los Angeles, home to some of the most authentic $5 pho bowls and $4 burritos. I know for a FACT that good quality food does not have to come at pretentious prices. And tuck shop just happens to be amongst that class. And in Manhattan, of all places. Thank God/Buddha/Allah/and all lesser deities for that.

By the way, Bug the main bartender here is an awesome guy and will explain away any of your questions about the food/drink. Build a relationship with this place. It'll be worth it, trust me.

Everything taste better in pie form. The steak and Guiness pie was good but a touch of siracha really gave it some depth. Pies are made on the premises and you definitely get you the best bang for your buck.

Tuck Shop is awesome and it's my favorite eatery in the city. I'm glad to see them expand to such a popular street (St. Marks). They're located next door to Australia. How convenient. The Thai Curry pie is my favorite, but everything here is good. You really can't go wrong.
