5 reviews for Tsukasa
This is one the best Japanese restaurants in the area.
The food is delicious, and it's nothing like other Japanese places that serve food (which is not so great, and expensive).
Some of my favorite dishes are Chirashi, Tonkatsu, Agedashi-dofu, Chicken Teriyaki, and more. The sushi is extraordinary; there's plenty of fish in the sushi rolls so that you can savor the taste. You can't find sushi in grocery stores that are made like this. Those in supermarkets fall apart instantly, and the ones that I've seen are pretty pricey (even for the meager quantity that they offer you, including the fish!). Unfortunately, many people don't appreciate the traditional Japanese food that Tsukasa offers. (Besides, Tsukasa offers more than sushi; Japanese food isn't just all raw fish.)
I recommend to stay away from grocery store's sushi and restaurants that aren't Japanese owned and just go to Tsukasa.
Tsukasa, is well priced and serves REAL Japanese food.
The couple that owns it used to own a place in Franklin Township (Somerset County) at Routes 27 & 518 called Kanoko. They owned for at least 20 years and sold it in October 2003.
Tsukasa is accessible from Interstate 295 and Interstate 95 (New Jersey Turnpike).
From I-295: Take Exit 57 (US 130) towards 'Bordentown' and turn left at the first traffic light onto Farnsworth Avenue. Take Farnsworth for about 0.2 miles and turn right onto Crosswicks St.
From I-95 (New Jersey Tpke):
Get off at Exit 7 and take US 206 north towards 'Bordentown.' Make a left turn at the second traffic light (for Farnsworth Ave).
OR
Get off at Exit 7A and take I-195 west to I-295 south. (Use this if coming south on turnpike.)
This is our 'go-to' sushi place in the area. Simple, good food at good prices. I guess the closest other sushi restaurant would be Jade Island, but it's a bit too fancy and overdone for me (I see no need to drizzle sauces over rolls).
As far as the size of the menu, I think that it suits the size of the place perfectly. As a matter of fact, it would make me nervous if it were too large; as far as I know the staff is 3 at the most (including the owners).
If you want good sushi and Japanese fare that isn't over-complicated then this hits the spot. The food speaks for itself, just remember that there are only about 10 tables in the whole place so don't be surprised if you have to wait on a Friday night...
I went to Tsukasa friday night for dinner after spending an entire day in the office craving sushi. I walked in and was able to easily get a table. After reading many of the reviews on Yelp I was excited to try some of the rolls and have a great sushi restaurant only blocks from my house.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't walk 500 miles for that sushi... not even .05 miles. The sushi was beyond sub-par, it was just wrong. I ordered 3 rolls: a philly roll, a spicy tuna, and a spicy yellowtail. All three rolls were ruined by the same components. The nori was chewier than a fruit roll-up, the rice was drastically undercooked, the rolls were half-filled and so poorly rolled that the moment you touched them with your chopsticks they fell to pieces. The portions of fish in the rolls were so small that you couldn't even taste it. If I could send the rolls back I would, but I know that there was no fixing this...
I really don't understand how the other two reviews rated this place so high. I agree the staff is not snobby and its not overpriced.... BUT it's really really not good and their variety of rolls is worse than your local supermarket. If you want sushi and find yourself in the area, do yourself a favor and go to Jade Island.
Cut and pasted from our BLOG:
I know what you're saying, another review of Tsukasa? Don't these two ever eat anywhere else other than the same restaurants in Bordentown? Well, when it's such a great restaurant in a great little town, how can we stay away?
Tsukasa was filled to capacity tonight, and again, we were lucky enough to grab the last table. We got a great table in the window where we could see the hustle and bustle of Crosswicks and Farnsworth Avenue, and we also ran into some friends in town, Joe & Jackie, as well as Rob & Wendye. And of course they too had a great meal!
Tonight we started off with edamame. This is such a fun appetizer, and absolutely tasty. My dinner tonight also came with miso soup, and even though I am not a big fan of the miso, this was great, and I really loved the fresh green onion on top! YUM!
Pam opted for sushi tonight, and went for the shrimp tempura roll, California roll, and salmon avocado roll. As usual, these were rolled nice with generous portions of fish and vegetables. Everything was served nice and cold, and it came out very fast considering how busy the restaurant was!
I went with the "Dinner Box," and what a great treat this was! First in the box were 3 shrimp Shumai. These were awesome, and very hot right out of the kitchen. Perfectly cooked with a nice hot temp. Also included was a piece of grilled salmon that was perfectly seasoned, a piece of steak teriyake that was to die for, and chicken teriyake that was also awesome. To top if off were 2 shrimp tempura, along with tempura vegetables, and as always, their tempura was fabulous. Add a side of steamed broccoli and carrots, and you have a gorgeous, large portioned dinner for $15.95. For the price, this is going to be hard to beat!
Everything paired wonderfully with 2004 Fiddlehead Sauvignon Blanc Happy Canyon...so feel free to read the review for that as well when I get it up. All in all, another outstanding meal with great value and great service! Kudos to the family at Tsukasa!
THIS is the place I've been waiting for! Finally a Japanese restaurant less than 25 miles from my house. I know there are one or two others (Route 130) but they are snobbish and overpriced.
The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the size of the menu. Not many items to choose from, but the place is new and the size is small. For those that feel the decor adds (or sometimes takes away) from the meal may be disappointed in the *lack* of decoration. The chairs don't all match and the walls are sparse - but it is all very clean. Parking is always difficult in Bordentown, you are competing with the other eating establishments and the homeowners for street parking, but I think there is parking behind the building.
As far as the food, FRESH. I had a large bowl of buckwheat noodles & broth topped tempura shrimp and veggies and it was excellent, and a bargain at barely $9. I added a few maki rolls at $3.50 each (6 pieces) and they were very large and well made. My husband ordered chirashi and not only was it filled to the top, it was only $12! A pot of loose leaf green tea was our beverage of choice.
Our 6 year old came with us (as well as our 3 week old) and although her normal soup of choice is won-ton, it wasn't on the menu (no tears there from me!) Miso is her second favorite and she wanted two bowls. Our neighbors/friends stopped in a few minutes after we sat down quite by accident and ate with us. It was their second trip to Tsukasa in two days, and I know they've been back since.
We plan on making Tsukasa a regular stop out when we dine out - Bordentown is a tough little sleepy town to survive in as it's a bit off the beaten path. If you are anywhere near, I know it's worth a trip. We will be regular patrons here and hope a lot of others are as well - help get Tsukasa on it's feet and in Bordentown to stay!
(They take Visa/MC but not AmEx)
