Scotch Plains, NJ
Upscale Montclair, NJ has no shortage of pretentious, expensive restaurants, so the owners here have taken a different, understated approach, and have hit it out of the park. This place instantly reversed my jaded attitude about going out to eat. The food here has a rustic, irresistable home-cooked appeal, with flavors that are unexpectedly bold, and distinctly modern.
Start with one of their artisanal bruschettas ($4-$7), all served on a homemade, crusty, olive-oil-rich Italian bread, which is baked fresh every day. Some of the toppings include wine-braised Kalamata olives with herbed ricotta, fig paste with prosciutto, and cumin-infused compound butter with juilliened radishes.
Tapas-style, vegetarian small plates are $4-$6. I enjoyed both a special of the day, delicious, caramelized brussell sprouts roasted with pistachio nuts, and the roasted fennel, chickpea, and parmesan soup ($5).
The main event here is a grilled, thin-crust pizza ($10-$16), the foundation of which is their homemade crust, which is slow-risen for three days, and is flavorful, light, crispy, and chewy, all at once. Choose your own toppings, or order one of their signature pies, such as the "Jersey Devil": homemade mozzarella, caramelized onions, oven-roasted New Jersey tomatoes, and pepperoncini.
Desserts are not an afterthought here, either. The cranberry-lemon compote panna cotta was fantastic, and a butterscotch cupcake garnished with crunchy sea salt was good, too.
As I have alluded to, many of the ingredients used here are sourced from local NJ farmers, and virtually everything on the menu is prepared from scratch. There's a lot of love in the food here, and it shows.Listed in: Good local restaurants

Service? It's counter service! This is essentially a pizza joint with a "point-of-view". It was tasty but overpriced pizza. The bruschetta was also tasty. But nothing was excellent. It was fine, but $95 for pizza for 5 people was pretty steep for a counter service place. The desserts (cold dry cupcakes from the counter case refrigerator) were dry, cold and terrible. I don't think this restaurant knows what it wants to be. I doubt we will be back.

Montclair, NJ
I had an excellent, casual meal at this restaurant last night. It was empty, hopefully just because it was a Tuesday night. The pizza was divine. I ordered their wood-fire grilled "foundation" pie with an addition of prosciutto. It was very thin, crisp with some chew, slightly smoky, just the right amount of sauce/cheese, with a large thin slice of prosciutto per piece. $12.00 was fair. The only other Montclair restaurant whose pizza is of the same quality is Ah, Pizz'! I also had the house soup: fennel with a base of tomato with parmigiano, spiced maybe with cumin or curry. While prepared well, it was too acidic for my personal taste. I had a "small plate" of beets in a warm maple cream--interesting and yummy. Desserts were a chocolate butterscotch cupcake finished with sea salt and a cranberry panna cotta. I find that dessert is the one course that often changes my opinion of a meal by being stale and/or overly sweet. In this case, the desserts were spot on. I am already planning a return trip to this friendly restaurant which uses top-notch ingredients at a fair price.
