Man, I love that Tropisueno is right next to my office. I would come here more often for the margarita happy hour if I didn't know from experience that having more than two of these missiles makes me throw up. (To be fair, I also sipped whiskey from a flask while at the Metreon watching the latest Twilight installment the night of that fun incident.)

They also make a mean Michelada. The food is good too, but I don't wanna talk about it.

Tropisueno is a great dinner and drinks spot downtown

Great house margaritas with a chili-salt rim, yum! Really great light crispy chips with 3 different fresh salsas! The plantains with black beans are the best I've had in the city and the Shrimp dinner plate is delicious! it's spicy and creamy, oh so good! It's the perfect spot for grabbing dinner and margaritas before or after a movie.

This place is a regular stop for lunch among myself and my coworkers.  It's easily the best mexican food in the area, but either show up early or late... or order to-go.  You won't get a seat at noon.

The thing that really gets us coming back is their salsa bar.  That yellow-orange salsa is so good!

I came here one night and upon sitting down, I was immediately taken by Tropisueño's charming decor. The city vanished and I felt like I was in a little shack in the tropics - the straw, the rope, the cloths, the little dangling lights, and the leafy plants...

Along with their friendly and sharp staff, they also serve up some of the tastiest fresh tortilla chips with three delicious dips. As for my chicken mole - absolutely amazing. The super-tender chicken paired so nicely with the full-bodied, spiced, and flavorful mole sauce. I also highly recommend the steak.

The food is great, the portions are huge, and the place itself is exciting. Great for entertaining people!

Words cannot do justice to the actual experience at this place - you must experience it for yourself!  The service was impeccable! The food was delicious! The drinks were juicy! The ambiance was the finishing touch!  It is perfect for a date or for a nice dinner with friends.

We made reservations ahead of time.  Highly recommended since we went on a Saturday.  We were seated within one minute of arriving.

It was a group of four of us who had never been here and we unanimously agreed that this place would get a 5.  No other dining establishment we've been to even comes close.  FYI...we are all originally from LA and this, by far, is the best Mexican Food we have found in the Bay Area.

The three salsas and chips they provide are flavorful.  Here is the rest of what we ordered that left us craving for more in the future:
    Oyster Appetizer
    Chile Verde
    Albondigas (intense taste)
    Camarones Tropisueno (spicy)
    Patron Margaritas
    Pepino (Cucumber) Margaritas *****

    Enjoy!!

    This place is great.

We went on a Thursday night at 8pm and I was glad we made reservations because the place was busy.

That being said, the service was prompt and very good.

We split the ceviche for an appetizer and I had chicken mole for my main dish.

The ceviche was very good with large chunks of fish and not too vinegary!  The chicken mole came with rice and beans, the rice phenomenal, the beans good but not amazing.  I'm sort of a mole snob and this was the real deal!

My counter-part for the evening got a cheese enchilada and beef taco combo and said they were both excellent.

The house margaritas were also very good and came in pint glasses with pink salt :)

Overall, great value and ambiance here.

The food was good so I'll give them another chance, but:

    Service was not good:

    - sat our group at a too small table (and we had a reservation!)
    - we were fine and said nothing, but ~20 minutes in and all settled in they made us move (no choice in the matter) and to a demoted, non-booth.
    - took awhile to take our order
    - food came piece-meal (some problem in the kitchen?). My plate came with just meat and a huge pile of rice. Beans thrown down on the table way later. Tortillas then came later even. The veggies and guac that are supposed to join the entree never existed. It was like they cooked half the meal, sent out our plates, and then as they made everything else later, sent those items as they were ready: so weird! No explanations or apologies.
    - I came home to see they marked me as an OpenTable "no show." Thanks. I wasn't late and we saw our name on their computer screen, so this was just a screw-up. I had to email OpenTable to get my credit...

Good resto so please fix yourself!

I haven't stepped foot into Tropisueno since their opening and the Yelp party a few years back.

I've forgotten how amazing their orange sauce is.

Or how fresh the guac is.

Or how potent their margaritas are.

Or how large their portions are.

You definitely won't leave here hungry.  Or sober, if that is your intention.

    Total damage for six: $160

Went here for drinks & dinner with my sister recently. Great margaritas & food. The chips and salsa are SO fresh and delicious. The waiter was great; I told him I was vegan & asked about options for me. He admitted he wasn't sure what that meant; major points for him there, I really hate when I can tell someone is unsure of the limitations but tries to fumble their way through. He took his time explaining literally every single option; and there were many. I ended up getting the plantains sans cream. So delicious, and a generous portion size. I will definitely come back. Minus one star for a snobby, rude bartender.

A co-worker and I ventured into this spot after working a convention at the Moscone Center.  LOVED IT!  Friendly service at the bar and restaurant.  Their portions were large and the food was oozing with flavor.

I ordered the Tampiqueno.  Wow, the carne asada was marinated and prepared perfectly.  Very tender, melt in your mouth goodness.  And the portion was enough to last a couple more dinners (at least with my appetite).

Awesome chips and salsa too.  The only downfall was that I ate so much of it that I didn't get to sample any of the appetizers like I normally would.  Oh well...next time!

As much as I LOVE... I mean LOVE Tropisueno, it kills me to rate them a 4 star... I'll explain.

I have been here many many times, lunch, dinner, happy hour....The food rocks.  Bartenders are pretty good, service is pretty fast, nice atmosphere.  During the week lunch can be pretty busy with all the lunch crowd.  At night its a sit down restaurant as opposed to the taqueria at lunch.  Happy hour has great bar snacks at great prices.

I have been mostly for lunch, so my review will cover lunch in general (as well as my most recent lunch). They have a pretty extensive menu, the combo is a pretty good deal, you can choose from tacos, enchiladas, tamales, or flautas (with chicken, beef, etc).  Now my complaint here is the menu is posted on the wall, and you have to memorize what you want, and then place your order at the kitchen.  There are no paper menus or a menu at the kitchen, and many times I have forgotten my exact order by the time its time to place my order and have to revisit the menu... ugh.

The orders come with tortilla chips, that are among the finest. They have a great salsa bar with about 10 different salsas... all of which rock, and range from mild to REALLY spicy. The tomatillo salsa is among the best I have ever had. (At dinner they bring you a sample of 3, but you don't get the full bar to choose from).  Orders are then brought to your table, and usually pretty quickly.

We both got the 3 item combo, cheese enchilada, carne asada taco, and chicken flauta.  The enchilada was great, really good sauce, and not the kind from a can.  The taco was fantastic, juicy steak, and avocado on the side which I added. My complaint comes with the flauta.  I have had better, and I have had better here.  They cover the flauta in a avocado cream and sour cream, which was pretty good, but made the crispy flauta soggy.  It also was slightly room temperature (and it was the first item I ate).  I would have preferred dippy sauce on the side.

We also go margaritas.  These are super strong... I mean 2 knocks you on the floor strong. But really tasty. They also have a chili salt they use on the rim that is prefect.  My husband however gets the plain salt since he does not care for the chili on the rim.  There are several different flavors of margaritas to choose from, all with unique salts. I have sampled many.

Adding to their down fall (and therefore unable to get 5 stars...) No fountain diet coke.   If I drank regular Coke I would be happy because they have the Mexican Coke made with real sugar...but alas... No fountain soda, and eating that much good food, I really need lots of diet coke.

But seriously, best Mexican food. Just could use a couple small improvements..

    I can't believe I haven't reviewed Tropisueno yet.

I've been working pretty consistently in the general SF downtown area since I've moved home upon graduating college in 2007. I remember when Tropisueno was just being unveiled to the eager FiDi masses with their assembly line-style lunch service, raging happy hour, and sit-down dinners - all accompanied with a solid, solid tequila bar. I've been a loyal fan since. I've immersed myself in many a delightful happy hour in their warm, dark bar area, reminiscent of a tropical tiki bar almost. I've dined in their more well-lit, rustic-woodsy-homey dining area during many a lunch break or post-shopping trip. And, every time, I've been charmed by the chupa chup lollipops that come with our checks. Every. Time.

There's not much to be added to the 1k+ reviews affirming Tropisueno that hasn't been said already, but what bears echoing: their chips are heavenly. Crispy thin, hot, and free. Their happy hours are WELL worth the 5-10 minute scramble and seat/table stakeout - huge, cheesy-meaty quesadillas, tasty fish tacos, the aforementioned should-be award-winning chips, and other delicious Mexican fare for you to munch on after a long work day, accompanied by a cold refreshing cerveza or a strong, tasty margarita. All at discounted prices during HH.

    Solid.

For SOMA, Tropisueño is pretty good Mexican food!

    Why you should go:

    1. Great value. Prices are low and portions are big.
    2. A little something for everyone. Like seafood? They've got it. Like meat? Check!
    3. Fast service; great for groups.

Tacos al pastor were pretty good! Meat was well-seasoned and tender. Loved the bites of onion in there.

I got the Tampiqueño, which is a whole lot of beef! Two long strips of steak that's well-marinated and grilled to medium-rare, served with a beef barbacoa enchilada too (which was really really delicious!). Comes with rice, guac, beans, and tortillas. It's like 2 meals!! My friend got the chicken mole, which was also ginormous.

I didn't check out the drinks menu, but gathering from the tables around us, they look pretty tasty!

Tropisueño is a great place to come with friends for dinner and pre-game. I wouldn't come here with a date though, unless you've already impressed them enough with fancy-schmancy places.

I came here because it got good Yelp Reviews but unfortunately this was one of the WORST MEALS I have ever had.  We came during happy hour so they just had small bites but the menu looked alright.  We ordered Baja tacos which were made with tilapia.  They were slimy and tasted like catfish (and I LOVE fish tacos when made correctly).  We also ordered their version of shrimp cocktail, which was defrosted BABY shrimp with zero flavor in a sauce that tasted like ketchup.

The house margarita was totally gross as well.  The salsa's were oddly flavored and the server was busy so we got pretty lousy service.  We did order the quesadilla which was fine and the guacamole was actually good.  But seriously... don't torture yourself and go here. If you are in the area and desperate for Mexican, go to Chipotle or Chili's- at least you will have edible food.

I don't really understand why they are on open table. because you basically go in line to order your food and take a number thing and get your own table.

I like the decor of this place, it gets a bit tooo crowded but eh, not a big deal.

Food here is pretty good. I ordered the combo plate with beef enchilada and chicken taquito. friends had a beef torta, and a pork mole. my favorite is the chicken taquito.

We also ordered two maragaritas. Tropisueno and the 4th down on the bar menu. Tropisueno is supposed to have ginger? in it but i didnt taste it. But their drinks were REALLY STRONG. lol chili salt was interesting, its just a hint of chili but you can see taste the spiciness.

Why didn't I know about this place sooner!?  YOU MUST GET THE GUACAMOLE!  It's absolutely amazing.  The avocados are ripe and packed with flavor, and I know it's so simple you can make it at home, but still.. you need to try it!  As with any Mexican restaurant, there's always chips and salsa.. however here, you get three different sauces!  The salsa verde is my favorite.  The chips are warm and freshly made.. yum!  Beware, you will have a hard time stopping.

The cocktails and margaritas are amazing too.  Quality tequila... need I say more?  Not a tequila drinker?  Try the Gloria.  I don't really remember what was in it, but I do know I remember seeing elderflower liqueur and egg whites.. yum my favorite!

    Now the food... oh man.....

I had the Chile Verde (tender pieces of pork simmered in tangy tomatillos, pepper, chiles and herbs).  I almost chewed my tongue off.  The pork was really tender and fatty - totally unhealthy, but totally delicious.  I loved the chilies and the whole dish just blended so well together.  Loved it!

My friend had the Tampiqueño (Niman Ranch beef, thin-cut carne asada, and served with a beef barbacoa enchilada).  WOAH, what just happened there?  I'm oblivious to everything around me because this was just like a little piece of heaven on Earth.  The beef was super tender and packed with flavor.  I almost wanted to switch dishes, but the pork from my Chile Verde was calling out to me too..

Needless to say, I was a very happy eater :)

Service was excellent.  I loved the decor.  It felt very intimate yet inviting at the same time.  Portions were very decent.  Best of all, it's totally affordable!

I'm totally coming back!  Next time, I'll try their lunch... tacos here I come!

Wow I would have never imagined an amazing Mexican restaurant being located in the SOMA over the Mission.

I bookmarked Tropisueno after seeing how highly rated it was. Most people seemed to agree that it had the best damn chips and salsa in the city. Boy were they right!

The first time I came here it was during lunch hours, which make seating and ordering more casual. You order at the counter and sit where you choose and they bring your order out. I settled on the chile relleno platter. While waiting for my entree, I had a tremendous amount of chips and salsa. The chipotle and salsa verde are to die for. Both are very flavorful and give you that extra kick you crave when chomping on tortilla chips. The chips were fried to perfection and were bottomless.

When my order came, it was drizzled in the appropriate amount of cheese and sauce. The ingredients were fresh and everything has an amazing amount of flavor. This was definitely the best chile relleno outside of my grandma's cooking I have had.

The second time I went here was with the boyfriend to show him how amazing the food was. He loves chile rellenos as well, but decided on the beef stuffed one, which both of us agreed was amazing. Our server was attentive and kind and we got flour tortillas with our entrees!

If you are in the city, visiting Yerba Buena or are in the downtown area, YOU MUST GO EAT HERE. You would be cheating yourself not to!

    RSVP for 7pm.  It's now 7:11 and I'm still waiting.  ;(

    What a night!

We sat down and they brought chips & salsa. we got plates, but no dinner napkins.  Tried asking other servers for dinner napkins, no luck!  Finally falgged down our server and asked.

Our server was not attentive at all and he was not even listening when he was taking my order.

I order a drink with lemon and had to ask 3 times.

Anyways, we order a Seafood dish for appetizer, Tampequeno (steak) and a pork entree.

    The seafood appetizer was alright.
I liked the steaks flavoring, but it was super chewy.  Not tender at all.  If you decide to order this, be prepare to chew.
The pork was super flavorful, but a bit dry for me.

By the end of the night, we were done.  We just wanted the check and leave. Again, try flagging down our server a few time so that we can get our check.  Lollipops to end the night?! Well that's what I saw other customers getting, but we didn't get any.

I was not happy at all! (sad face)

1 star is only because they have amazing margaritas and chips & salsa!!!

Like all the other reviews say, the freshness and portions were awesome here!

Ordered a chicken quesadilla, was starving before, but managed to have enough for a second meal! You can definitely taste the freshness and appreciate their authentic flavors. There are a variety of sauces to choose from, which I can never say no to, my favorite being the orange though everything else were unforgettable also.

What else is there to say? Come through! Lunch hours do get incredibly packed though! Happy hour may be my next go!

The story I am about to tell you either says a lot about the food, or a lot about me. Probably both.

Basically, went there for lunch, and even though there was a crazy holiday-crowd, and a fire alarm sounding, we stayed. That should say enough.

TOFU BURRITOS! (I always like to put in a keyword search for tofu and VEGETARIAN) Great selection for meat-eaters and veggies alike!

They also have this delicious, creamy, spicy, orange, salsa-auce thing. It is awesome.

During lunchtime they have a cafeteria-style burrito/other entree bar, and for dinner it is a sit-down restaurant. I love a place that can transform to please. It is pretty busy though, so I would perhaps suggest a reservation? Or patience. The orange sauce is worth it. I also had the chile relleno once and it was quite good.

Just came back from a fantastic meal and felt I just had to write a review.
We are on holiday in the SOMA region for a week (from Australia) and found this restaurant by a quick google search.  I quite agree with all the rave reviews and can only think the bad ones had a different lunch experience (we had evening meal) or just went on a bad night!
Our server was great and carefully explained all the vegetarian options to us.  In the end we had a selection of all the veggie options between 3 of us.
One of the nicest mexican meals we have had!
    Thanks!

Best lunch place in The Square! I come here all the time for lunch because its fast, tasty and they have the best salsa bar! Thats right, they have a salsa bar... SALSA BAR. Since im sure you know salsa has replaced ketchup as Americas favorite condiment, im sure you will rejoice, Salsa Bar!

The fish tacos and burritos are amazing. The chips are always brought to you warm and fresh. It also has generous bar seating if you come by yourself. Yum.

I've been at night. The food is so-so and a little over priced.

Suggestion- stop by Tropisueno before you hit up a movie at the Metreon!

I was looking forward to trying Tropisueno out. I had walked by quite a few times and thought it looked really nice inside. I went with my BF for lunch one day and just really found the food lacking in flavor. I got a chile relleno and a beef enchilada. Both were really bland to me, like they were missing something. I don't really have much more to say... just that my chile relleno and enchilada were unimpressive. I won't be going back to Tropisueno.

Their $5 margaritas are strong, their small plates are actually pretty big, and if you make it in on time you can have a whole meal plus drinks for not a whole lot at all. They serve standard fares like tacos, flautas, quesadilla, and ceviche, and everything we ordered was tasty.

I have also been here for dinner, and their entrees are actually quite good, and real big too. I would recommend splitting a big entree and getting one or two appetizers. We had Molotes de Elote y Chorizo, which are chorizo-filled corn mesa goodness that's deep fried and served on a bed of beans. DELICIOUS. Their Mole Poblano sauce is also amazing. Makes me want to order more rice and sop it all up!

Dinner can get busy tho. My suggestion is to come at 5:30 and get some happy hour priced drinks in you, maybe one small plate to share, and then move to a table to get your serious eating face on. No shame in scraping leftover sauce into a take-out box (we did!).

We really like the food here but the service leaves a lot to be desired. Either they don't have enough servers or the servers they have aren't interested in good customer service. It would be nice to have the beans with the rest of the meal instead of when we're almost finished eating. They also clean the table off completely while customers are still sitting down. I'm not talking about clearing off the empty plates, but water glasses and wiping the table down. It would be nice to be able to sit and enjoy the entire meal, having everything we ordered, and not feel rushed.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Tropisueno already! I think I secretly don't want more people to know about it, I just want to enjoy it all to myself! But what the heck, might as well preach....

I've been coming here since I moved here from San Diego 3.5 years ago. Let's just say I searched long and hard to find a Mexican place with food worthy of my palate. Tropisueno was definitely love at first bite. From their food, to their salsa bar, to their margaritas; you simply can't go wrong.

As far as the food, I've tried almost everything and love it all! I especially like the spicy chicken burrito and their empanadas. As far as margaritas, I'm a die hard fan of the Violeta, but all of them are delicious.

Now for the main reason why Tropisueno has earned 5 stars in my book; the staff. The staff at here are an awesome group of people. Everyone is personable, friendly, and go out of their way to make sure you enjoy your time their. Some staff that goes above and beyond are: Carlos (bar manager), Roman (bartender) and Albert (general manager).

Last nights dinner was a bust. Too dark to read the menu in the both. My wife had to change her order 3 times because they were "out" of fish of any kind. Out of fish in S.F.??? Give me a break.
Food showed up... COLD. One dinner was sent back never to return.
Good thing the margaritas worked out.

Excellent choices of salsa and the chips were also great. Always important to get a good start.

I had chicken fajitas which came on a huge plate. The only negative was there weren't enough flour tortillas. (or chips!)

The wife had the ceviche tostada and beef taco which she devoured so it must have been good because (1) there were no leftovers for me and (2) she spoke very little!!
And then all the chips were gone too!!

We'd come back here again without hesitation to get our mexican fill!

Love the Gringo Taco Salad !!!  Or, try the enchiladas, or a combinaciones, . . . or, of course, who can resist their tacos !!!

This great Mexican restaurant is very near my office, so, like many of my fellow Yelpers, I'm here regularly for lunch.  They're tucked onto Yerba Buena Lane between the Marriott and Four Seasons hotels, just off both Market and Mission Streets.

Tropisueño can get fairly busy during the lunch hour, but they keep the serving line moving at a really good pace.  Sometimes you may find that there are only a few remaining open tables to choose from . . . but, hey, obviously if they are filling their chairs then they must be doing something right !!!

This yummy, delicious goodness begins with chips and a trio of delightful salsas!!! We could hardly stop eating them long enough to place our dinner order.

A must have is the Caldo de Mariscos...oh sooooo GOOD!  It is a seafood soup loaded with calamari, sea scallops, mussels, large shrimp, and fresh fish in  a deliciously spicy lobster-chile broth.  I could have a bowl of this EVERY night.

The cheese chile relleno is also a great choice. It was served with Mexican rice and we sampled all of their beans...refined pinto, white and black beans.  Our favorite were the white beans, but they all were good.

The only items that don't get my vote are their "old-school" combos.  They lack flavor and character, but there are several other tasty, exceptional items to choose from; so, only bother with this section if you want a Swanson's TV dinner tasting meal.  Because of this, I cannot give it five stars, but Tropisueño is certainly a 4 1/2 star in my book .
