I've been to Tres Agaves three or four different times, with large groups and with small groups. The experience has been similar each time:
The food is okay and over-priced, the service is insanely slow, the margaritas are great.
If you want great Mexican food, I'd go elsewhere. If you're in a hurry, you're out of luck. If you want good margaritas and a wide variety of tequila, this is your place.
my friend parked the car valet here. His car was broken into, and the valet was very shady, bribing him, instead of showing their insurance information. Ultimately, two hours later, the owner of the valet company begrudgingly rolled up in his Mercedes w/ plastic girlfriend (who spent 15 minutes applying her makeup while the owner played mobster) and game some insurance info which may / may not be bogus. The valet guy claims to have seen the street getting cased.....but continued to smoke his cigarette (instead of doing anything about it, or **crazy though** watching the cars they were responsible for at $11/ a pop.
Shame on such a reputable restaurant to associate with a shady valet company.
This is one of those reviews that I must split into two parts: service & food. This might be because we sat in the bar, but I've heard similar problems about the main room.
Food: 5 stars. the food was really delicious and I was with two friends who both really enjoyed their food as well. It comes out pretty quickly, but is fresh and hot and really yummy. Beware that the margaritas are delicious, but the pitcher is not a normal size pitcher - it's a little smaller.
Service: 2 stars. Let's just say it took 20 minutes and me waving a bright green foam finger (literally! - go California Redwoods) to get the attention of anyone that worked there. Granted, the bar was busy, but it was a little crazy. She was really nice, and helpful, but still, it tool a long time to get help in the bar area.
Si: Delicious foods, legit margaritas, lots of tequila, pretty large bar area w/4 tvs
No: Long wait, busy = you ain't gettin service, not the cheapest meal.
We rented out the back room (La Plaza del Agave) for a private event ( ~50 people). Would have preferred the "Tequila Tasting Room"--which seemed warmer/brighter, but there was no way to accomodate us with that many people.
La Plaza functioned admirably, though----and more importantly, we had our own private bar less than a stone's throw away (unless you've got a really wussy arm). Because when you're a bit tipsy, every extra step can be a potentially disastrous one.
The food was served buffet-style and restocked reasonably promptly. The private events coordinator, and the staff on the night of the event, were friendly and accommodating for most of our requests. The event coordinator also graciously worked with us to find a price point that was acceptable to both parties -- which, from experience, is a lot more than can be said for most establishments you try to contract with in SF.
For our purposes, Tres Agaves provided decent food, good drinks, and a unique ambience that we wouldn't have had elsewhere. I hope we decide come back for this year's event.
The only thing I like about this place is their house margaritas and their tortilla chips! They probably have one of the best margaritas I've ever had and each time I've been here, I've always left a little perked. It's a little on the sweeter side-- not too strong, but you can definitely taste the tequila. The bar has a plethora of tequila, so if you're into that, then you must check it out.
Other than that, service sucks both in the dining area, as well as the bar, and you can definitely find better Mexican food elsewhere.
I'd r
Food and Margaritas are good. Service is spotty. Sit in the bar and don't expect much service.
This place is loud . . . I mean this place is LOUD!
The bar scene seems quite active and a bit roudy along with challenging if you're trying to get served.
The food is like Chevey's +1 but not greatest you'll encounter in San Francisco by far. It's strange to me that I've been here several times for I never pick this place; it's always my wife's friends idea. This place definitely has a far out seletion of tequila which I think is their best asset.
The service at the tables is fair; I've never been blow away.
Tres Agaves has a fun environment which is why people come here, also it is close to AT&T park.
We came here on a Sunday, this place still seemed to have a steady flow of traffic, which kinda perplexes me. I think they try to be a high end mexican restaurant but their food is average at best. I had the chile rellano, I like that it was not fried and it was not overstuffed with cheese but it was bland and uninspiring. I also tried some of my girlfriends ceviche, good but nothing special. The fish also seemed a little tough for ceviche. Drinks are good, but beware of the habenero tequila, they serve 2 glasses of milk for a reason.
Despite the food being average, I expected it given the rather affordable price. They lose points with be because the service was extremely slow. It took us 15 minutes just to get our order and when we wanted to leave, it took us another 15 just to get the check. We were extremely restless by the end of the night.
lil pricy but good
Meh.....it's OK....you get what you pay for...however, sometimes they try to hard and put too much tequila in margaritas...I don't appreciate it..if I wanted strong tequila taste, I would get a shot....
Guacomole is OK....so is salsa
This is a fun hang out. It can get pretty crowded and for the food and drinks, it can be a bit pricey. There are other spots in the city you can get delicious Mexican food and cocktails for much cheaper. What this place has over the rest is ambiance - a party atmosphere. The quality of tequila is pretty good, too.
Whenever I think of tequila, I think of...

...I had platform shoes like that once, but I was dancing to "Disco Inferno". Burn, baby, burn. Keep that mutha down. Yep, I talked like that. Really. OK, so I was going into Tres Agaves thinking it was the second coming of cocina mexicana. It's not. Take a look at their Web site. Their dinner menu is buried somewhere in there, but the tequila is front and center. It's all about the tequila. Hit it, Pee Wee.
The food is not only meh, it's darn pricey. I went for the $19.95 Mercado Libertad Chuleta (Stuffed Pork Chop) - which was stuffed with ground pork. Now why would anyone stuff a piece of pork with pork (see photo)? Sure, it had chiles in there, but it was just pork. What saved it to some degree were the accompanying fixings - the rice and beans; the cabbage, mango and serrano chile salad. Oh, and the chips with the three sauces, the tomatillo being the best to my tongue.
However, all the food was overshadowed by the $7 Tres Agaves Margarita with Arette Blanco tequila. It was smooth with very little salt needed to pucker it up. There are at least ten more margaritas to try, and I can see doing that, perhaps over a long, lonely night as I walk my hamster. But the food sure doesn't beckon me back. Once liquored up on the Tres Agaves tequila, I just may put on those platform shoes again. Tequila!
FOOD - 3 stars / MARGARITAS - 4.5 stars...if you come for the food, you'll stay for the margaritas
AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...dark in there, nice murals if you can make them out, and man, a whole lotta loud and drunken people...and some of the customers were obnoxious, too
SERVICE - 3 stars...unmemorable
TOTAL - 3 stars...sorry, I have to leave it at three for the meh food...Pork stuffed with pork? I don't get it.
I'm going with 4 here not for food but for T-E-Q-U-I-L-A. They know it well, they serve it well. Good 'ritas, great fresh house-made chips (perfect for snacking on whilst drinking away), good guac, awesome selection of tequilas. Sit at the bar and get a flight, have a frickin' awesome night. (Yes, that's right, I'm feeling poetic).
I like the ritas and cocktails b/c even though they are small, after I finish one I FEEL it. Wow. I like to feel my booze, I'm just saying.
I also like the decor/atmosphere- it's fun to go to the bar and hang. The food itself I'm not completely in love with- more of 3 stars for me, although I do really like the jicama salad (so fresh and tasy, a little spicy). This place does two of my main ingredients for good Mexican place very well- margaritas and chips. The third requirement (for me) that I don't like very much here is the quesadillas- I like 'em boring, unauthentic, too American, flour tortilla style, and they just don't do that here. But that's ok, b/c I can come here to enjoy some awesome tequilas and snack on chips, and that's A-OK with me.
Not a fan. My friend and I came on a whim on Saturday for lunch. The place was practically empty and yet somehow, the service managed to be slow and inattentive. We were rationing our water, taking small sips and passing on the hot sauce bc it was rare we flagged somebody down for a refill.
The food was just flat out bland and boring. Beans: mushy and unsalted. Enchiladas: completely average with just chicken and no melted cheese in it. Carnitas tacos: tiny and flavorless. The one thing I did thoroughly enjoy was the jicima and cucumbers. Now THAT was a delicious and unique dish.
I won't come out of my way for this place. This will be for strictly pre-game/post-game margaritas.
Didn't actually partake in the tequila, since I went here with co-workers for lunch.
Get the guacamole. It tastes super fresh, but at $8-10 (?), it's not exactly a steal. Tacos were good, but small and messy. The meat tastes decent, but it doesn't taste the freshest either. Come here if you're in the neighborhood and probably if you want to do tequila anything, but don't inconvenience yourself to get here.
The ambiance is pretty cool here and the Mexican dishes are authentic from the Jalisco region of Mexico. If you are looking for plain fajitas you might not like this place, its like foo foo authentic Mexican food. The prices are a little steep though and the service could definitely be improved. We actually get better service here if its jam packed crowded - there have been times when we were 1 of 3 table in the bar and the waitress is just spaced out. It can be frustrating.
I hate to report that things have declined. The food, the service, and most and even the drinks. Too much ICE!
But really, while the Carnitas are still some of the best in the bay, the food quality has declined so much I felt compelled to re-write this. The steak special I had last night was so bland I was shocked. The salsa which used to be vibrant, was bland and almost tomato paste. The Chorizo that I loved in a ring, was not small little sausage rolls and not served sizzling hot. This review comes after 3 recent visits where I was giving it a chance. But even my friend commented on how it was not nearly as good as it was.
I am sorry to pan the place, but maybe you can save more than a few bucks, get better food, and provoke this place to improve. Or it is in well on the way to Chevy's SF.... Hat any one?

Food and dink! Very good. Costly and hard to park. But the margarita mix is perfecto!

The space is beautiful. Although I did drink a margarita, I can't tell you if it was actually any good since my taste buds were long gone due to some serious tequila tasting done prior. The food was pricey and not commiserate to the price. Definitely won't eat here again. Unless I'm in the neighborhood, probably won't drink here again either. But the space is beautiful.
A very popular place before a Giants game, it was packed. We were there after our quest to find a place to watch the USC/tOSU game. It was pretty cozy near the bar, but it was nice. Though the tv's were small, they were doing the job. As the Giants game time approached, people began filtering out. After 2/3 of the game, we were told that there was a backroom that had the game on 2 very very large screens...with sound! Anyway, we saw the 4th quarter in the environment that we originally wanted, except it was us and 2 other people watching the game in the room. Oh well, I guess no one else knew.
When we were leaving, the dining room had filled out with the dinner crowd so maybe next time we'll try this place for dinner.
This time around, we just had appetizers. They tasted pretty good. The food was a little pricey, but you do get free chips and salsa. We also got guacamole, but I'm not sure if it was free. They do have a variety of tequillas, but I'm no connoiseur, so I couldn't tell you dark from light. The margaritas tasted fine.
Anyway, it's a little off the beaten path so you should be able to get a seat during a Giants game.
Dear Cocktail Waitress,
Flirting with my boyfriend right in front of me does not equal good service. Are you just assuming he will be paying? Maybe not the best approach.
Thanks!
5 stars for the margarita and the happy hour. Truly, one of the best happy hours in SOMA. Also, the location and interior are so cool
2 Stars for the mediocre food and inconsistent service. I wish this place could do better. The service is sometimes good, always friendly, but overall inconsistent. The waitress at the happy hour took about 20 mins just to take our order. She brought a pitcher of margaritas and didn't even ask if we wanted salt. At a margarita bar, this can not be overlooked. Also, she spilled a lot and broke a few things. I know accidents happen but it was kind of comical. I think she thought she could make up for the bad service by flirting with my boyfriend, but I don't really think that is the best approach.
On a serious note, for the price, the food is not very good. The drinks are great.
Stopped by here for a quick lunch and my friend had a BOGO card on meals, so we thought, "why not?"
I had the 2 al pastor chicken tacos and 1 fish taco. The al pastor chicken tacos were good but the fish was very overcooked. My friend has the chicken enchiladas which were good but not great.
Overall, a decent place for "authentic" Mexican, but I have had better.
I was outvoted so my team and i ordered lunch from here. Luckily they have a soup that is good which is what i ordered.
Took forever to get our take out & we were not given any napkins or utensils. I wonder if the hostess thought we would be eating with our hands.

This is a cautionary tale. The bar at Tres Agaves may seem festive and bright but lurking among the dozens of exotic tequila bottles are the components of the wickedest potable in all the Bay. The infamous habanero tequila.
I had the misfortune of coming here on a culinary scavenger hunt some years ago. I love spicy so I was only mildly phased to see the task for this stop was a dram of the "habanero tequila." No big deal, Im cut from a rugged cloth and I love tequila. I belly up and place my order. Bartender frowns and replies "No." No? You dont understand I have to do this: Im on a mission. "You really dont want it. Trust me." In hindsight I appreciate the sentiment but like so much wise advice before it I dismissed it as an indignity. "Alright but Im telling you you better not puke on my bar. I can give you some chips but thats it." Ahhhh.... sure?
Flash forward five minutes and Im in the alley outside trying to decide which would be worse: allowing this stuff to melt through my stomach or risking my esophageal lining by pitching it on the pavement. Definitely an educational experience. I always wondered what people felt like just before they spontaneously combust.
(Lest you doubt the potency of infused tequila it bears noting that they actually throw a jigger of straight habanero juice in with the hooch before they hand it to you.)
Ok, I'm being generous, but i really enjoyed it. The house Margarita was amazing, I drank about the entire pitcher! Didn't feel a thing, well, that's not true, I did feel it, but it was a "happy feeling", Amazing Chips, and that Cheese and Chirizo app was delicous. Carnitas and the flank steak was a hit. Homemade tortilas, so soft and perfect!
Sorry I couldn't give more info about the food, it all went in my tummy though.
Was there with good company and good food, what more can you ask on a great night like that? The crowd around us were having a great time too for a Friday, and it was not a GAME night.
You don't have to like Tequila, you can just love the food.
Holy Guacamole!
Things have certainly changed at Tres Agaves. We were at the Giants game, hungry for non-ballpark food, and contemplating where to eat close by. Unfortunately, the only thing we could think of was Tres Agaves and we'd had nothing but average crap from there. After looking on the iPhone Yelp app, Tres Agaves still seemed to be the best, closest option. Resigned to mediocrity, we headed over.
Then we noticed- the menu had changed. The service, chips, and salsas were good from the get-go. We ordered guacamole, carnitas, and carne asada and prayed.
Lo and behold, the food was awesome! I am not kidding you- there have been serious improvements here. No longer do you order flavorless tacos by the serving- it's brilliantly prepared meats served with homemade corn tortillas and the fixins'. It was spectacular! Between the carne asada and carnitas, I loved the beef more, but both were unrecognizable in quality.
Same name. New place. I kid you not.

Death by mariachi
Ok food and lame service.
Believe it or not, but my favorite thing here is usually their hamburger. It comes w/ avocado, grilled onions, and cheese on a bun that's a step above a regular hamburger bun. It's more like a roll that they use for tortas. The fish tacos are also really good; stay away from the birria (SUPER oily and flavorless).
The service has never been amazing, but today it was especially bad. My coworker and I walked in and there was no hostess at the front for quite a few minutes. Then when she finally arrived, there was no acknowledgment about the long wait. Our waitress was super spacey and inefficient. She probably walked by our table about 5x empty handed and did not look busy, and yet she didn't stop to take our order til about 10 minutes had gone by. She would sort-of look around and straighten out chairs, but besides our table, there were about 3 other parties waiting to order too. WTH! I have an hour for lunch, not 2!
I hadn't been to Tres Agaves in a while and I ended up here for a lunch interview. The decor is very cool and it's a great place to go before a ball game. This was the first time I ever ate at the place and I thought the food was okay. Apparently they just reduced their prices...but not on the guacamole appetizer. They aren't stupid. They know the guac is a major attraction. The guac was very good. I had the chicken enchiladas and I thought they were good, not great. Nothing standout about them. Service was decent. I guess I am such a big fan of "down and dirty" authentic Mex that I really don't care for so-called upscale Mex places like this. The food is usually uninspired and flat, and that's kinda what this place is like.
Great Food and Really Great Margarita's. Friendly people as well.
Had been hearing about this restaurant for awhile from friends. They said it was amazing. Finally went last night. We found the options on the menu to be very limited. The house margaritas were really good. They served us chips and salsa and then took almost 1/2 hour to take our order. Seemed like that was happening all around us. Then the meal came out within 10 minutes. Odd timing between ordering and delivery! I had the fish tacos. They were okay but pretty spicy which surprised both me and my friend who also ordered them. They were also really skimpy on the beans, rice and slaw that they served for the table. There were four of us and they brought a small bowl of each.
Overall, I thought it was okay but I think Tommy's Mexican restaurant on Geary is better. The food is also pricey and the quantities are rather small. Glad I finally tried it though. I can check it off my list and move one.
Tres Agaves has nice atmosphere. It is no doubt a fun place to grab drinks and/or dinner with friends. They also have pretty good happy hour during Giant's games which can be enjoyable.
However, the margaritas are nowhere near as good as Tommy's. They also don't even take the time to ask you whether you want salt or not. Shouldn't that be standard at a tequila bar?
The food is good, but expensive for not being great. Also, they ALWAYS try to up-sell you on the guac when you first get there, which kinda bugs. I did enjoy the chips and salsa though (pretty much LOVE any chips and salsa within a three mile radius of my face).
I have been here multiple times for a corporate event in the large back room. That is a great experience. The room is great, the bar is big, and they do the fun little carts of food. Recommend that.
I came here with my family and my boyfriend so they could finally (FINALLY) meet each other. Needless to say, I was a little nervous. But nothing diffuses awkward situations like strong margaritas and tasty Mexican food, right?
Right? Anyone?
If tequila is your shtick, then come to Tres Agaves to gander at the crazy amount of tequila they have behind the bar. You name it, they prolly have it. They use that tequila to make yummy margarita's too, which I gulped down prior to the family meeting us. Part 1 of my mission: complete.
But after drinking said margarita(s), pay your tab and leave. The food is pretty bland and pricey, and I think I uttered the phrase "(taqueria in mission) has better (salsa/enchiladas/everything)" more than 3 times. Part 2 of mission: incomplete.
If you're still set on coming for the margaritas, they have a $4 beer/margarita special that goes from first pitch to last during Giants games. Only time it's really worth the price of admission.
On a positive note, everyone got along just fine and it wasn't as awkward as I thought it would be. Except for my brother, who just sat there all hungover like the entire time, much to the scorn of my parents. Thanks for taking the pressure off me bro, I (prolly don't) owe ya!
This has got to be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the City. I've been to this restaurant about a dozen times. Funny, I always end up ordering something with pescado (fish) and they always turn out delicious. A great place to people watch, especially when folks are celebrating and get festive.
It's a huge restaurant with two extra large room. The staff is amazing, and the foods are delicious. They also have a huge selection of drinks. Especially good for big groups. The service wasn't so fast but the staff was so kind and gave so much appetizers we hadn't really care. Prices are 20% higher than the average mexican restaurants, but if you're looking for a spacey place with nice ambience, lighting and music this is definitely a good choice.
Went here for a friend's birthday. The place is good for larger parties but ends up being pricey once you get pitchers and pitchers of margaritas. The tequila was the best part of the entire restaurant experience. The food was decent but the sides that were apparently family style came in the smallest ice cream like bowls. I got the shrimp and it was slightly over cooked but better than my friend's ceviche which was mostly cucumbers. Finally, they charge an extra 3.5% on top of tip as a non-voluntary donation to some sf charity. If I come back it'll be for the flights.
I love Tres Agaves... especially when I say it in my best "Valley Girl" accent... like, totally! OMG!
1. Mouth watering guacamole, mind blowing salsa and addictive like crack chips that leave you licking your fingers and lips.
Guacamole is just FAAAABOLUSLY rich, creamy, fresh and umm! umm! tasty! Salsa is nice and spicy, has a good kick to it and just gets those pores and sinuses opened up. Chips are a bit on the salty side (hence the incessant finger and lip licking as your skin dries up!) but are nice and thin and crisp.
2. Ass-kicking & drunk dial & drunk text & laughing fits & cheap N easy date inducing margaritas.
OK, the cheap N easy date was my date... eh, so sue me. But seriously, their margaritas are some of the best I've had and I believe its because the lime / lemon juice is not the synthetic kind but is freshly made and naturally sweetened to the right sweetness.
3. The 4 times I've been there, we've never gotten to the food menu coz we've filled ourselves on the guacamole, chips and salsa... and margaritas.
4. Have brought my team here for team lunches and they handle groups very well. Have come here with a group of 4 to 8 friends and they handle that very well too.
5. Service is quick and efficient.
6. There can be a wait some weekday evenings since it does get packed. So make OpenTable reservations should you be really in the mood to dine here.
7. Only OUCHIE - it can get expensive especially with the margarita pitchers, some of which are close to $50! So come with a group... a FRIENDLY group. Make sure you have one designated sober attendee to raise the flag when the pitchers outnumber the chips in the bowl!
Other than that, good place, good location, good drinks, good service and goody! goody! gumdrops all over again!
So my boyfriend and I went to this restaurant for a good friend's birthday and the experience was not bad at all. However that probably because we were there with a group of friends and were celebrating a birthday.
This place is a tad bit pricey so be prepared. Mexican food and tequila. What more can anyone ask for? We shared carnitas and soft torillas that I want to say taste like its homemade. Because I had a feeling the portion would be too big for me to finish alone (as usual). The boys decided to take it amongst themselves to order a couple pitchers of margaritas. Sadly, like the reviews before me stated, it really is a tiny bit over priced. Tastes pretty good for regular margaritas but not good enough for the price being charged.
Overall, the expercience here was decent. I probably would come here again to celebrate occassion or if I ever feel like having an overpriced margarita! ;)
GREAT: Margarita pitchers at happy hour prices. Tequila choices.
FAIL: Service. About 80% of the times I've been there I think "Really? I'm supposed to tip you now?"
If you are vegan/vegetarian, you'll *maybe* have 2 options. And that mostly consists of ordering rice & beans with a side of tortillas. Stick to the guac at happy hour, go eat dinner elsewhere.
8.50 for Guacamole and Chips? SERIOUSLY?
The guacamole was seriously just ok. It needed salt and in my opinion a little fire for it to cost so damn much. I am not trying to be cheap but I went here before a Giants game to grab a quick beer before heading to our seats and saw some delicious looking tacos and decided to treat ourselves.
We head to the game and see a TRES AGAVES stand. Interesting... walk over and a HUGE sign says "Guacamole, Chips and Salsa $6.50"
Jaw on the floor. I was in shock that the over priced ball park actually had this for less. I ddnt check out the portions, but still. I feel completely ripped off.
+1 Star because the bartenders are REALLY nice. helpful and quick. Not a normal thing to find in South Beach on game day.
Tequila bar, tacos, they accommodate large parties.......
HELLO?
totally cool place.
