Best ice cream, best value on the North Shore!

I am an ice cream connoisseur of sorts.  I have been to all of the top ice cream spots around and I have yet to find one that competes with Treadwell's.

Let's start with the ice cream.  It's rich and creamy.  Every mouthful is a wonderful experience.  Their seasonal ice creams are always top notch.  I find very few places that are able to do a chocolate and vanilla twist with chocolate jimmies well.  This place is tops.  From special ice creams to the basics, this place is the best!

How about sizes and prices?  You cannot beat them!  For less than $3, you can get a massive portion of ice cream.  Believe me, most people don't need more than the kiddie size.  :-)

Location:  It's right on 114 in Peabody, on the Salem line.

Service:  quick and friendly.  The owner is awesome!

Can I get Dutch apple with some fingernail topping?

We ordered pumpkin and dutch apple (seasonal) ice cream.  My God....if I only tried the pumpkin ice cream, this place would have received 5 stars automatically.  Top three ice creams I've ever had in my lifetime.  Portions were bigger than Richardson's (which I thought was impossible) and two graduate students had to split the kiddie size in half to barely finish it.  The bill came out to be $2.75.  Simply amazing.  But let me share something more amazing than this.

My friend was chewing his dutch apple ice cream and came across this hard little piece which he thought of it as an apple peel.  But as he felt the sharpness, he spat it out.  And to our surprise, it was a piece of fingernail that came with the dutch apple ice cream.  Now, the awsome flavor of pumpkin ice cream, large portions and the cost only SCREAMS for 5 stars.  But after the sorry dutch apple experience, i will knock it down a star.  Most of us would usually give 1 star for such a terrible experience but the pumpkin ice cream is just too good for me.  I also kinda feel sick after eating their ice cream though...dunno why

Went there on Sunday night for the first time w/my husband and we were the only ones in line.  The employees were taking care of other things rather than acknowledging us for the first 5 mins we were there.  Would it have been so difficult for someone behind the counter to at least have just said, "be right w/you." when we came in?

The ice cream itself was okay.  I had black raspberry, my husband had peach, and while both were creamy, they both lacked flavor.  It tasted store-bought.  Also, should have asked how big is a small, b/c the small was either 3 or 4 scoops.

If it came down to a deathmatch b/t Treadwell's and Richardson's, Treadwells is done for.

Actually, i'd like to give three and a half stars, but i'll round down rather than up because I didn't feel Treadwells lived up to its reputation.

Superfast service. Strictly an eat outdoors or in your car kind of place, there is no inside. There are some picnic tables in back.

The ice cream is very good, tasty and creamy, but the hot fudge sundae I got was disappointing. The whipped cream was very light and airy, like eating nothing. There was such a small amount of fudge I can't say if it was good or bad.

My daughter got a plain buttercrunch ice cream (my favorite) and couldn't finish it because it was so sweet. If you knew this child, you'd perhaps understand what an astounding development this was. My husband and I were both compelled to taste it and it tasted more like butterscotch syrup than buttercrunch ice cream.

I'd probably go back to Treadwells if I was in the area and felt like ice cream, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go there.

See the problem with Treadwells is that its right on my way home from work so the whole diet thing is out the window as soon as I see the sign hahaha

My favorite ice cream here is mocha chip. SO GOOD :) The servers are always friendly too. What's even better is they sell Winfrey's frudge OMG love that stuff! Just beware of long lines on really hot days...they sometimes cross the parking lot.

On my way to Salem today to check out the downtown, never visited the town but wanted to avoid the All Hallow's Eve crowds.  On my way, I took rte. 114 and I saw this great big sign of a giant waffle cone...so old school, but a great logo and knew that I was going to stop on my way back.
There is a lot that can hold about 10-15 cars and there is also street parking.  Before you enter you can check out the flavor options, cones, cups, shakes, soft serve, yogurt, etc... on a giant board outside the entrances.  There are a lot of choices - it can take some time for a first timer.  In addition to the regular ice creams, hard yogurts, sundaes, soft serve, shakes, etc... they also have seasonal flavors.  I love that!  I spent about 5 minutes checking out all the flavors and all the ways to get it - since I was driving I figured a cup is easy since I can put it down.  I couldn't decide between 2 seasonal flavors so I got both the pumpkin and dutch apple.  I really wanted the kiddie size, but felt strange ordering that - so I ordered the small for both.  A small is enough for two - it is almost as much ice cream as you get in a pint - it may actually be a pint!  I snuck a taste of both once I got back to the car - pumpkin was my favorite.  Ice cream was cold and after being in the car for about 10 minutes I hit some traffic - I tried them both again and they had warmed slightly - which allowed you the flavors to come through.  I still really liked the pumpkin, and the spice of the dutch apple was more prominent but did not surpass the flavor of the pumpkin.
Some other ice cream flavors that sounded interesting are:
frozen pudding
cake batter
peach
If you like the standard stuff they also have:
coffee
mint chocolate chip
chocolate chip or chocolate chocolate chip
cookie dough
strawberry or strawberry cheesecake
Some I am curious about:
moose tracks
heavenly hash
milky way

If you are in the area, passing through or looking for a some place to cater or buy an ice cream cake or pie - go to treadwell's.  You can check them out online at http://www.mytreadwell....
Enjoy the last days of summer or the crisp days of fall with a cone, cup or big sundae...

I used to go to the Treadwell's in Danvers back in my high school days (a million years ago) and I remember it being good.  I did visit the Salem location on occasion as well back then.

I have been reintroduced to Treadwell's goodness more recently by my fiance.  Last summer he stopped and got two pints of ice cream to bring home, cake batter (his fave) and coffee oreo (my fave).

They pack the pints so that they are overflowing and wrap wax paper around the top because the cover doesn't do too much.  It's more like a little hat for the ice cream.  So, don't go here on a warm day and expect to bring home a pint without having it melt all over the place.

Last week he did a repeat order of the year before and it just really hit home how good this ice cream is.  The cake batter ice cream is vanilla based but has fudge swirl and large pieces of cake in it.  Yum.  And the coffee oreo is creamy and deelish.  There are no big pieces of oreo in the ice cream, it is pretty well blended.  iw ould normally complain about this, but the ice cream is so tasty that I don't even care.

Definitely check out Treadwell's for a tasty summertime treat!

hmmm.. I was in heaven on so many levels when I stopped by.... no more JP Lick's for me. I have found perfection.

Thank God I don't live in Peabody.... I really don't want to forfeit my jeans size.

amazing chocolate peanut butter ice cream.  The peanut butter and chocolate swirl together in perfect harmony.  Wow, this ice cream is GOOD!

I grew up eating ice cream here and have fond memories of begging my parents to take me to Treadwell's.  I was reunited with my beloved Treadwell's this past weekend after years of not visiting.  Nothing has changed and that's a good thing.

Oh how I love Treadwell's.  The summer I was pregnant, my fiance and I would walk the mile it took to get here just for a frappe.  And then we would walk back.

This place is the only reason why I didn't gain a million pounds... lol... all the walking helped!

Their frappe's are think and creamy.  And their ice cream sundaes are to die for!!!!

What more can you ask for... oh yea... they are open year around!  Woohoo!

Make sure you budget some spare time before you swing by Treadwell's. I pass Treadwell's on my commute home from work and there is often a huge line at 5:00 PM. Hmmm...having ice cream for dinner? Or as an appetizer before dinner? Having said that the kids who work there have it down to a science and the line moves fast. They also serve hot, fresh buttered popcorn. They have picnic tables in the parking lot, so you can take a load off while licking. I do agree with the other poster, who said that the portion size is monstrous - so order smaller than you think you want.  All in all; a tried and true  family
favorite.

Living so close to an ice cream shop is an exercise in self control under the best of circumstances, but when it's this good, it's a real trial. (And when I say close I mean close; you can see my house in that photo up there.)

As the previous reviewer said, the portions are indeed huge. They come in "baby", "small", and "large." Okay, that's something that annoys me about ice creams shops around here: Just say "small", "medium", and "large" and stop insulting my intelligence. And while they think they're doing me a favor by making even the baby portion so huge, they really aren't. I'd gladly pay $2 for something about 2/3 the size or even smaller.

Okay, that little rant aside, the ice cream is indeed very good. In addition to their regular offerings, they usually have some special featured flavors. All the ice cream is made on the premises and you can also buy it in bulk, either hand packed now or already packed. They have sundaes and banana splits and sherberts and frozen yogurts and lime rickeys and milkshakes, as you'd expect.

The service is always polite and fast. The owners must do a good job hiring kids and training them. They're also good neighbors. The property is always immaculate and they've made a point to come over and welcome us to the neighborhood. I think they're very sensitive to being in a neighborhood rather than a commercial district.

And, yep, they're open year-round. Good thing I'm only living in this house for a year. I'm going to be packing on the weight I think.

(I will add that I've been very good, I think. I only go over for ice cream about once per week, which is probably less ice cream than when my wife was buying half-gallons at the store.)

New Englanders love their ice cream.  Treadwell's gives them good reason.

This place is open all year.  Nothing like tucking into an ice cream sundae in January.  We did in my family.  Usually on the way home from the North Shore Shopping Center.  This must be the reason cars have heat.

The ice cream is homemade.  The whipped cream comes out of some giant nitrous oxide fueled contraption but it's the real deal. Hot fudge is thick and not too sweet.  Dad always swore by the Butter Pecan.  I was a Vanilla or Chocolate Chip kind of gal.

Ice cream done the way it should be.

birthday cake ice cream....need I say more? This place gives you heaven in a bowl and it is so good it's wrong. I wish I could marry the chocolate peanut  butter and birthday cake ice creams and we would live happily ever after.

Any ice cream shoppe with its own t-shirt MUST be the real deal.  I also think that it gets more credence because there isn't any where to sit.  Don't you just love walking from the car to the ice cream store window and ordering a rich, decadent cone of frozen deliciousness.  I thought so.   I got the fudge ripple (which I - gasp - sort of didn't love because it had frozen icy bits in it) and cookie dough.  Both were sooo creamy.  More than any other ice cream I've had in a while.  It felt goood.
