Review from Ben S.
San Jose, CA
I bought my Scott 40 from Tread back in May when I first got home from deployment. Staff was extremely knowledgable and helped me make my decision. I was planning on getting a bike way more expensive than what I ended up with, but after talking with the employee, who seemed to know a ton about biking, he steered me towards the cheaper model. Now, in this down economy, I'd expected to be sold some crazy expensive ride with a ridiculously unneeded amount of bells and whistles I'd never need to use. Not in this case.
I took it back for it's first service two weeks after I bought it, like directed, and it was complete in less time than it took me to walk down to the coffee shop on campbell ave and back.
Five stars, boys. You earned it. -

I have 2 bikes, one road and one mountain. I occasionally need parts for them and split my time / money between this store and performance. This store has more mtb'ing stuff than road and you can find most replacement parts for a decent price. We should support our local bike stores as much as we can too keep them in business. I purchase some items through the net, but try to purchase locally when possible. (Hope CA tax doesn't go over 9% any time soon...) =(
The staff is helpful and will tell you what you what you need and how to do it if you need to know.
I was here a while back near closing time and they asked me if I wanted to join them to the Calabasas pump track in Cupertino.... pretty cool guys. I think they are mostly Mtb'ers,,,,,,,,
They rent bikes and demo them as well. -

My review comes from industry related experience. Having worked at a bike shop from 2+ years, I do have higher standards than most. There is one crucial point which all bike shops must hit: customer service. It's so easy to say "Hey, how's it going?" when a person enters a store. It's so simple to say "Hi there, someone will be with you in a moment" or "Have you been helped?". But no matter how easy it is to say these things, many bike shop employee's just can't do it.
When I entered the store there were three employees working. One customer thumbed through a catalog at their service bar, one family was being helped. I rolled in on my dutch bike with my niece, on her Giant cruiser. We needed air, a tube, a tool, and a bungie net. No big deal. My rule in a bike shop is "I know where and what everything is, so I'm not going to hunt down an employee. If an employee wants to help me, they need to take the initiative."
We were there for about 10 minutes (pumping tires, looking around) before anyone said anything to us.
Employee: "Can I help you find something?"
Me: "Yes, although I'm surprised you're just barely now asking."
...
2nd employee (who previously looked me straight in the eye without so much as saying hello): "I'm sorry, I thought you were all together" (pointing to the family)
Me: "Well, that's a poor assumption. You should at least say hello to every person that comes into your store."
2nd employee says nothing, and walks to the back of the store, obviously too upset with me calling him out to offer a genuine apology.
Since it's so easy there are only a few possible explanations for such poor customer service. The staff is either:
1) Dumb
2) Ignorant
3) Apathetic
Customer service is the most basic task of a store. If they are incapable of doing that well, then I wouldn't trust them with a more important task such as servicing one of bikes.
(My background is in road, mountain, and cyclocross racing and bike polo. I just happened to be out on a gentle ride with my 10yr old niece. The day before I was riding Annadel, and tomorrow I'll be riding Mt.Diablo. I can't help but wonder if I would have been treated the same way if I were a guy, or in spandex.) -

Really cool shop. If you have a bike that needs work, take it here. These boys work hard and love what they do. Great energy. Just want to say how grateful I am to Chris for fixing my bike and making me fall in love with riding it again....and a BIG thank you to Shawn for hooking me up!!!! Thanks boys!

Came by Saturday evening to get a chain guide that I wanted to install myself. The guys showed me some other options and I decided to buy a derailer. Bike mechanics then stayed late on Saturday night to install and adjust it on the spot. After official closing time they offered me a cold beverage and stuck around adjusting and tweaking unrelated things on my bike. Like having an Indy pit crew working on my Blur. Next day the bike rode like a champ.
Kudos for their proficiency and spirit. -

Came in to use my old Groupon - a lot of their road bike apparel sizes were missing (like large), but found some stuff that I was missing to get $100.
Saw so many great reviews, so I was disappointed to hear an employee going off about how he would personally douse UC Davis protestors with barrels of pepper spray if he could - and that they should move to Egypt if they're unhappy...
Volunteering to inflict pain on others is beyond political views and completely unprofessional.
Unfortunate first impression of the store.Comment from Shawn S. of Tread 11/25/2011

Great place...very helpful (no, they won't run at you when you come in the door since they are not used car salesmen) and they did a much better job than other bike shops in town with my mtn. bike tune up. They have earned my business as my "go-to" bike shop in the future.

My husband and I rented bikes here a few weeks ago. The price is amazing: $20 for all day. Most places charge $6-$8 per hour.
The bikes we got were beginner bikes, which was fine with me. I only go biking 1x every other year. My husband could have used an upgraded bike, as it was uncomfortable for him for most of the ride.
The seats are big and cushy, the employees were really friendly and helpful. They sell bikes as well as rent bikes. Its in a great location too. They are just across the street from the Los Gatos Creek Trail, a great path for beginner bikers. It goes all the up to Vasona Park and back. Being on Cambpell Ave, they are also a block away from the main strip in Campbell, with all the fun shops, and eateries. -

My first service with Tread is complete and I'm 100% satisfied with the customer service, support, techs, and the willingness to answer my several questions. I had zero doubts that Tread and their staff would meet and exceed all my expectations.
Just to give you an idea of how much I trust Tread with my bike. I have several LBS around my area (Milpitas) and travel to Campbell to have my bike service. A matter of fact I'll be taking it back to have a few more things upgraded this week.
Thanks again Tread for providing a friendly, professional, and awesome service.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Brian B.
Had a great experience at Tread today. These guys clearly love bikes. I went in with a friend so he could snag a couple things, but had them look at my bike because something was funny with it. Other shops make it really awkward to look at your bike because they don't want to give away work. These guys put my bike up on the stand and went at it, straightening out a bent gear spoke by hand (well, mallet and chizzle, really) and explaining the process to me the whole way. No charge, just great service. They didn't have the new part I needed since they had run out, but I'm going to try to go back and get one from them when they get them in.
Awesome shop. Wish there was one in Santa Cruz County. I'll be back to this one, though. -

These guys are great. I brought my Santa Cruz Tallboy in with what I thought was a broken pivot and Ford just started working on it and found that it just needed a lube. He was very helpful on what I should be doing for maintenance. The store set-up is great and they have a nice selection of bikes and bike stuff. It is worth the 25 minute drive.

I bought my bike in santa cruz, and normally get it serviced down at a bike shop on Capital Expressway. However, I recently had some service done by these guys on my bike and I can say that it was head and shoulders above other shops I've been to. It was big, clean and the techs were working out in the open. They've got a bar that you can sit and and watch the techs work on your bike and ask them questions or concerns you have. They are very friendly even at 9am on a Sunday morning (which is when they open up).
They've got a great selection and their prices are competitive with other shops, but their customer service is the difference. Big props to Sean and Collin who helped me out with my new wheels.
My only regret is that I wish I knew about them earlier. -

Stopped by the other day expecting to drop a few bucks in this place and much to my amazment Shawn saw that I work/own DentPro Mobile. His eyes lit up really big and asked me for some advise on a problem he had with his truck. I told him I could make it look a lot better. For something that I would have charged $50 -60 bucks for he hands over a set of pedals and a salsa skewer....and says thanks these are for you. Now like i said, I was planning on spending a couple c-notes for this stuff. I was shocked when he just handed over about $200 bucks worth of merchadise and said thanks.
I'm a customer for life. Go'n there this weekend to pick up a bike for the ole lady, drop off another bike for a bunch of parts an ex's f'n kids pillaged from, and my newest baby for a tune up.
Shawn totally took care of me and i'm going back to drop a few bucks for the rare offering that he really didn't have to do. This guy and his shop is a class act. -

Outstanding service. Ford really knows his stuff, so I take my mechanical issues to him because he's great at explaining and solving problems. The prices for service are very fair and the work is five star.
They carry road, off road bikes and cruisers and anything you should need to keep your wheels spinning. -

Hands down the best bike shop in the San Jose area. Ford and Shawn understand the importance of customer service and technical know how. Ford's work is topnotch and his service technicians are held to the same standard. Everyone who works here is passionate about cycling. I would trust these guys to work on my bikes any day of the week. They often beat anticipated service lead times and are happy to explain to you what work was completed to the smallest detail.
Tread works on high end rigs as well as Sunday cruisers. They have bikes and gear with the "Little Rippers" in mind.
I previously frequented the shop that both Shawn and Ford use to work at for years. Tread has exceeded that standard. -

I called a few bike shops to get a quote on fixing my rear disc brake which was rubbing. Two of the shops said they could see my in two weeks. Ford answered that he would need to see the bike before quoting or even booking an appointment, as he wasn't sure what was needed. This to me seemed the most honest approach. What good would waiting two weeks be if only then I would need to order parts and make another appointment? Ford said bring her down and he will inspect it. He took a look, said he needed to call for more information and would get back to me. He did exactly that and the bike was fixed in a matter of days. They will continue to get my business from here out, good on 'ya Ford!

This is honestly the best bike shop I've ever been to.
My first visit, I showed up ~15 minutes before closing time with some broken spokes on my MTB. They took the time to show me how to install them so I could ride the next day. Mechanic also adjusted my shifters, seat, and brakes for free!
My next visit, I had a blown out fork. They had it warrantied through SRAM for $20 in about a week. They also took the time to give my bike a free tune up.
I love Tread, and recommend them highly -

Tread is a bike shop that I can trust. I will go out of my way to have them work on my bike. Their service prices are cheaper than most reputable competitors within 25 miles. They recently had a groupon on clothing and accessories. My groupon was honored a day early, and I scored big time on gear. As long as I can bike, I will continue to be a customer.

Awesome service and friendly atmosphere! Got my bike tuned here for the first time a few weeks ago. 2nd time out after tuning, the rear derailer started acting funny again so I took it back in. The guy immediately spotted the problem and fixed it. Some cable came off the guide and he took the time to show me how to spot it and fix it myself next time. Also gave me some tips on how to shift w/o hurting the gears. They don't just sell and repair bikes here, they are INTO bikes and riding. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Shawn helped me pick out a light weight set of brake rotors, a new shock, and a new stem for my wife's red Santa Cruz Blur XC. Easy going, great knowledge, clearly willing to help. Didn't have any problem weighing a bunch of parts before we decided.
I like the setup in this shop because you can see the work bench area where they are wrenching the bikes.
It was my first time in this shop but I came away very impressed. Next time I build up a bike I would consider this shop first. -

These are my bike gurus! They keep all 5 of our bikes in excellent working order. It seems like a real gear head type of shop with sprockets and some such in great abundance. I'd like to see more accessories like seats saddle bags, baskets and so forth. They have 1 option for all of these other than the racing type and abundance of parts looking things:)
I also love their location. I've been out riding on the LG trail, got a flat and limped it into them and had it fixes right on the spot. Overall they get most of my bike business. They know their chit! -
Review from Collin S.

I consider myself fairly technical when it comes to bike maintenance and repair. That said, there are some jobs that A) I don't feel like doing and B) I don't want to invest in the tools to complete. Tread has helped me in both these areas and given five-star service in every way.
I know many people think a bike shop is a bike shop, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I am 100 times more careful choosing a bike shop than choosing a barber (hopefully that doesn't show!) and I'm so happy to find Tread, right down the street from me nonetheless. Ford has helped me a few times and it's a great feeling to get that old-fashioned, loyal, I-care-about-my-customers attitude. They're not going to gouge you on the price, they're not going to sell you junk you don't need and they're going to be up front and honest with you time and time again. To me, it doesn't get any better. I brought a 35 year-old bike here because I needed the bottom bracket rebuilt. Not only were they close to 50% cheaper than a few shops around the area, they did it in a few hours. Color me happy.
They've got a great selection of high-end road bikes and mountain bikes to drool over as well. I can't comment on pricing or anything, but you can best your ass that you'll have the pleasure of talking to someone that knows a thing or ten about bikes. After all, they care about riding and that's what it's all about. No used car salesmen here. Keep up the excellent service, guys. -

I bought my 2010 Scott Aspect 35 from these guys; let me begin by saying I LOVE my new bike!!
Prior to buying my bike I had been coming into the shop several times a month for about a year; it wasn't due to me being picky, but because of financial reasons. I just enjoyed going there to look at my future bike. Most of the times I came in, I would happen to be Shawn or Anthony that were available to answer all my questions. I was always treated as if I had driven up in a Jaguar with a wad of cash to buy a Trek Yoshimoto Nara Speed Concept. Everyone always had a friendly smile, chit chatted with me, answered my questions, always very polite and treated me like I was the most important person to ever walk through their doors!
The day came to buy it, it was Anthony that took the order since it was not in stock. Anthony promised me it would be less then a week, and it was, even though they were short handed.
When I picked up the bike, it was Shawn that took care of the final transaction and handed me the bike. At this point, when it was time to pay, it was when I was blown away by Shawn's kindness!!!
You have made another loyal customer, guys!!
Thank you!!! -

I just moved over the hill from Santa Cruz and was on the prowl for a knowledgeable mechanic to do some long overdue maintenance on my XC hardtail (brake lines bled, new pads, new chain, new spoke/wheel true).
I had a great first experience here. Mechanics were friendly and worked with me to find necessary service required for my bike. Bike service includes a test ride, which I appreciate because how else are you supposed to know if you really fixed the problem, or if there is a related problem.
*Only downside I would say is that some of their services are pricey, perhaps unnecessarily so. $35 labor to true a wheel?! This is not a wheel build out, just a new spoke. Anyway, this seemed pretty steep to me - hence the 4 stars *
HOWEVER, I will say this - the mechanic ran me through all possible things to fix + costs of parts/labor for each, then after it all we went through the quote together to minimize cost, fixing only crucially essential things. He even brought me behind the counter to point out things on my bike while it was on the stand to make sure I knew exactly what he was talking about. If that weren't enough he even dug around parts bins from their rebuilds to further lower these costs. Through this my original quote was reduced by 30% from ~$200 to ~$140. Great stuff!
The work came out just as promised, actually total cost came out a little lower even. Anyway, I hope I don't need major bike maintenance in the near future, but if I do, I'd go back to Tread. -
Review from Tomomi S.
A brand new bike shop just opened near downtown Campbell, in the same shopping center with Sal's Pizza. Bikes they have were mostly high(er) end bikes, and they have some knickknacks on bike related stuff - from clothing, protective gears to tubing and bike components.
We particularly liked the way the store is set up. When you come in to the shop on the right side is the shop with big counter table. So when you are out biking and have some problems, you can ride in and the work station is right there in the front. Staffs were pretty friendly and easy to ask questions.
I think this store will be desirable for customers to stop by with your bike when you need tune ups and fix on your bike. -

First off, I have a thing for family owned businesses maybe it is because my dad thought he could do anything and everything better except glass blowing ( go figure?)
Next, um I am in need of a decent bike that won't set me back a thousand degrees of poor and guess what they have it.. and I want it but I still can't afford it...( must get job to get bike ).
Yet, with only pennies in my pocket I got to try out two types of mountain bikes that would most likely any mountain they would go on is Castro Ave in Mountain View. ( that still counts right? )
Okay, first off family owned, secondly they let me test drive. Thirdly, affordable ...where can you go for that? where?
Lastly, did I mention the fact there are two mountain bikes I tried...that means double the pleasure...
Ooppssss! I kinda forgot the cute sales guy...totally married but still hot!Listed in: Born to Window Shop

These guys are pretty awesome.
I brought my "new to me" Craigslist bike there for tune-up evaluation. The thing is that a full tune-up costs $90, but they will do an evaluation of your bike and let you know exactly what you need done. Maybe you only need to adjust the derailleurs, or to true the wheels. Then they only charge you for what they actually do.
The technician said he could put my bike up on the stand and take a look at it right then, so he put it up and started messing around. Since all I needed was a little lube on the brake handles and a slight true to the wheel, he just adjusted everything for me right then (free of charge) and told me my bike is in good running condition. Yay!
The store itself is pretty big and has a good selection of stuff. They are also willing to order whatever you want from the catalog and help you install it too. Nice! -

I'd recommend this bike if you're primarily into mountain biking. They have a nice inventory it seems and the staff are for the most part helpful and nice. I was in the market for a road bike and stopped by there one afternoon and they only had about 2 or 3. Realized it probably wouldn't be the best place to buy a road bike so I split.
The setup of the store is really cool, it looks like the employees and customers have created a little culture there. I can appreciate that.Comment from amy f. of Tread 10/24/2009

I've been to a lot of bike shops over the years and Tread is pretty close to the top of the heap. Very good selection and even better staff, who know their stuff.
The mechanics are first rate, starting with Ford, one of the owners and a former NASA employee, so, yes, you can tell people that your bike was worked on by a rocket scientist (a phrase I borrowed from a sign in the shop.) Ford not only really knows his stuff, but he makes sure his employees do, too. I particularly appreciate how he dressed down an employee who was working on his own bike, but not wearing the shop's logo shirt. Who cares, you might say, Well, Ford did, and it is that sort of attention to detail that extends to the rest of the shop's operations. I really like the fact that the store recognizes and caters both to locals and to bike enthusiasts.
I will never have my bikes worked on anywhere else. -

I stopped by to pick up a new pair of gloves which I was able to find a great selection of. Lots of other goodies out for you to look at too.
The shop is right out there for you to see and it's clean/well maintained.
I've been having a couple of shock issues and mentioned it last time I was in the store. Sean said "bring it in and we'll look at it". I did that today and got some great advice on setting it up. That's all it needed. In and out in 10 minutes--great help too!
I definitely plan on using them in the future as well as telling all my friends to go there too. -

Dropped in on a Sunday afternoon because my mountain bike's rear derailleur no longer reached all the gears. I had taken a look at it, but decided trying to adjust it was over my head. They not only adjusted the derailleur , but found and replaced a bad cable casing, and disassembled and lubricated my front shifter (which was found to be gummed up and causing some of the shifting problems), all in about 10-15 minutes. And the bill? A mere $20.00.
And the repair takes place right behind the counter, so you can grab a stool and chat with the guy that's working on your bike as he does it.
Very helpful staff, a nice store (lots of goodies there that I need to check out sometime soon), and a very fair price for the work done. It doesn't get any better than that. -

I'm really happy with this shop. I appreciate how the mechanic area is set up like a bar where you can watch, and ask the occasional question. They carry a lot of Scott road and urban bikes.
The other day I was riding home and noticed an annoying creaking, and just rolled into this shop, as it is conveniently located right off the Los Gatos Creek bike trail. He got my bike up and running, and ordered some missing parts.
I like this shop since it isn't all high range things that I'll never afford. So there's no need to feel intimidated by the equipment, the workers, or even other customers. Yet they are just as experienced as a high end shop.
I hope this becomes my new neighborhood go-to shop. -

This shop just earned a new customer for life. I stopped by last night 1 hour before they were closing to have my Magura brakes bled. Keep up the great work, happy trails!
