I seriously LOVE it here. My first experience here was 3 years ago when I was Halloween costume shopping. I had a list of things I needed for my outfit and after some Google searching, found this place met all my needs. When I came here, I realized my obsession with this place would go far beyond my Halloween needs.

They have a downstairs (Trash) and upstairs section (Vaudeville). I've always preferred Trash because it better fits my style. Chains, studs, leather galore. They have a really big boot/platform collection, which I love. Their clothes are pretty impressive. Good quality, fair prices.

The jewelry section consists of leather/pleather bracelets, necklaces, chains, etc. Anything punk you can think of. But as sean k. also mentioned, this place is definitely not for one specific type of person.

The staff is very friendly from my few experiences here. At first, I felt like maybe they were looking at me as if I didn't belong there (I actually don't dress as punk as some of the patrons), but after I came here a few times, I got a lot more comfortable and everyone who worked there was really friendly and helpful.

The prices might be sort of higher than what people expect, but the quality of their products exceeds the amount you pay for them.

I'd definitely recommend checking this place out.

I was around the area so I had to come out to check it out. This place sells some very unique clothing in the punk/goth genre. I'm not really that type of gal but it didn't mean I didn't want to own a few pieces from them.

Some of the clothes are good for clubwear and even to wear out if you don't mind a bit of attention. The price is a bit steep even that some of their clothes don't seem to be exactly in new condition. Some seemed like they have been tried on by several people and placed back on the shelf.

They had a pretty okay shoe collection. The sizes they carry are a bit disappointing. I see a cute pair of shoes but they will tell you they only have size 8 and 12 for example. They don't carry multiple sizes. I got my pair of Bordellos here because I love Bordellos and I didn't own a pair then and knew I had to own one. It cost me $71 plus tax. When I got home, I checked online and realized that amazon charged only $55 with free shipping so I know next time to shop online instead because not only do they carry more sizes but a larger variety and in tip top new condition.

It's a fun store but I think it's a fact that we should check everything online before buying it in store anyways.

A staple in the East Village.

I have been coming here since I was 16 years old (maybe younger).  Definitely one of the coolest shops NYC has to offer.  The shoe selection itself is beyond amazing.  Yes, the prices are a little up there but the quality is well-worth the price.

The one thing I hate is when pre-teens wander in here and wonder why it's not Hot Topic.  Listen kids, this is better than any Hot Topic that your local mall in suburbia has to offer.  So shut up and buy something.

I hate spending more than $30 on pants (and even that's pushing it for me) so I don't shop here often, but a few years ago I did buy some intensely comfortable destroyed black jeans here while on a shopping binge thanks to my first job. I can't speak to the pricing of anything else there, but the pants I got were at least $60...I think they were even closer to $70 :x alas, the only things I've bought there since are lighters covered in glitter (worth it even though I am not a smoker) but popping in every now and again even if it's only to be chatted up by the rockin owner is worth it.

Yes, customer service sucks big time. Employees think they are making you a favor by working there. I've been trying to get a pair of shoes and they never have sizes available, and I don't know if they will. They are waiting until all the merchandise is sold out to order new one.

I wonder how that store has survived that long with the same over priced old merchandise and such a bad customer service. They're that kind of cool that is not cool.

Its a very sad experience. Also, when did punk rock evolve into such an expensive and vain thing?

One of the only true "punk" stores left in the east village. With that being said..the prices show it. They jacked everything up. The help is more coincernd with selling you everything , and not so much as what actualy looks good on you. I literally had a woman change her mind in 2 min of what she thought of one pair of pants to another after I told her what I thought. Great Place with some great stuff, Just go with friends who are truthfull...cause the help here isnt

Wow! instead of walking into T&V, I may have come into a Halloween Bazaar. Awful, vile and so not punk rock. I remember coming here in the late 80's and early 90's and it was a completely different animal. The staff has always been surly , but now they really have no reason to be this way 'cos this shop is so not cool. I walked away feeling depressed, wishing my memories remained intact after seeing what it has morphed into. I'd suggest you go to the Salvation Army and come up with your own punk uniform at a more authentic price. That's what Johnny Thunders & company would do anyway. I doubt very much Brian Eno would ever wear those cheap looking feather boas they carry... shudder.

I'm just gonna say right off the bat that I sell *actual* high-end clothing for a living...and comparatively speaking, Trash & Vaudeville is a breath of fresh air after a week of getting sticker shock every time something awesome came into the store I work in.  Yeah $130 for shoes is nothing to scoff at, but when you compare it to the far more boring and uncomfortable shoes I sell to customers regularly for around $650 - $1,900, 130$ for a nasty pair of lime green pony hair Beatle booties sounds like an amazing deal.

I also snagged this BEAUTIFUL fluorescent pink and blue zebra print motorcycle-ish trenchcoat for 76$!!! Dude at my store, they would retail something like that for like $550+  The quality is very good too, and honestly not that much inferior to the luxury european brands I'm hawking all day.

I'm really giving the place five stars because it's becoming increasingly harder and harder to find retailers that sell this kind of loud, in-your-face stuff. Everything is so loose and colorless everywhere you go. Much of the clothing in here is super fitted and usually some fabulous neon hue or composed of some nice shiny pvc material. Where could one go wrong?!? :D

There are plenty of items in here that I have never seen anywhere before...and yes the "Hot-Topic" brands are all over the place, but I have yet to see the majority of the Lip Service/Tripp stuff I saw in here on the mannequins at the last Hot Topic I saw (which I think is closed anyways).  Additionally, the inventory isn't nearly is limiting and specific as Hot Topic. Most of the items here can be worn in a fashion-forward way and not necessarily a punk/emo/goth way.  For instance - black and white houndstooth skinny pants or a fitted red motorcycle jacket

I'm thinking of calling up and ordering the unbelievable spike ring on the bed of iridescent rhinestones I saw downstairs in the Trash section.  Yes it's 195$...however people spend like thousands on far uglier rings all day long down on 5th ave.  That's just the way you gotta look at it...

Trash & Vaudeville is the original punk rock clothing store, long before Hot Topic made the lifestyle trendy. Just off of St. Marks Place, this two-story shop boasts vibrant colors in all kinds of alternative clothing. Skirts, dresses, fishnets, funky socks and decor... it's all here. An employee that looked like a blonde Sid Vicious helped me out in the dressing room, which was a set of double doors plastered with leopard print and punk rock stickers. He gave his opinion on which dress I tried on looked best; the white or the blue. I opted for the latter.

There were plenty of gorgeous Rockabilly dresses in the back, and many other outfits I knew I could pull off if I was still in university. Downstairs I browsed the shoe room and spotted a pair of ox blood Doc Marten's that I've admired for years. Unfortunately, they didn't have my size, but at least I saw them in person. Also downstairs is a collection of rock band tees, and even a custom Trash & Vaudeville tee.

My dress cost $50.00 and was worth every penny. Most of the outfits here are in that price range, and shoes are between $50.00 and $125.00.

If you're into punk rock, make Trash & Vaudeville a stop on your tour of New York City!

Even though I don't particularly dress very punk, rock & roll or goth I always seem to find some of my favorite outfits here. They can be alittle over priced with some of their merchandise but from what Ive seen from the other stores on St Marks they're on the lower end price wise especially compared to the others.
One of the biggest reasons I keep coming is for the owner Jimmy he is honestly one of the nicest people Ive ever met. This guy loves styling people and he doesn't care whether you're a celebrity or an average person who has never shopped there, he goes beyond helping. You can tell he treats everyone the same. So I'll be returning again & again prob to buy a really awesome jacket or just to bullshit with Jimmy.

My favorite black pants are from here. I have been stopping by here since I was 16 years old and the store hasn't really changed. Jimmy, the owner, is super sweet and knowledgeable. I don't usually shop here unless I'm looking for pants or shoes. Some things are overpriced but if I have the money I rather spend it here than waste my time trying to find the exact same thing for cheaper.

I really loved looking around this place and trying things on, but the prices were crazy. That said, I still walked out wearing a new pair of creepers that I'm in love with. Sometimes you just have to make sacrifices for awesome shoes!

I was a little disappointed by the women's wear, as a lot of the clothing I found myself wanting to try on ended up being in men's sizes only. I'd really like to see a wider women's jacket and pant selection.

Overall I liked the store. My aching wallet and I will probably be back for another shoe binge in the future.

I loved this place! I thought it was pretty awesome, the staff were friendly and they had great selection. It's a little more punky than my style but it is a rock shop afterall so it's no complaint for me. The only issue I had was sometimes some of the stuff was not reachable because it was blocked by storage boxes and/or ladders. But other than that I thought it was a cool shop. Bought some great boots for under $20 there!!! I'll definitely be back.

I always seem to end up here when I'm in the city, but since I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend I frequently leave disappointed. I have found some awesome stuff on the sale rack though!

To be fair, there's almost NO other store that sells this stuff in real life (it's basically here or online), and it's expensive regardless, so it's not really their fault.

I like this place since they carry obscure and/or unknown brands. They carry your typical hot topic/gothic renaissance stuff from tripp, serious, and lip service, but they also carry some great designers who make all their stuff themselves by hand, piece by piece. Those pieces are expensive for obvious reasons, but you wont find anyone else wearing that from some runway or H&M-like assembly line. Most of their things are novelty. They have some great accessories and they also carry some latex. They carry a few discontinued pieces from Murray and vern and some other latex labels so its worth a shot to take a look around.

its very expensive, but sometimes you have to look at this stuff in persons since you wont find it anywhere else.

Here's the thing...I'm no longer young or particularly hip but long ago in a decade far away I was kind of bad ass. When I walk into a store like Trash & Vaudeville, I have come to expect the immediate dismissal and disdain of the sales staff I am met with.  But this afternoon when I walked into T & V a magical thing happened.  The staff were nice to me.  Really, really nice.  And helpful!  As a result,  I wasn't driven away by misplaced angst & so I actually dropped some cash on some pretty great stuff.

What I'm saying is this, people over 40 want to buy your retro punk t-shirts because we were around when that shit was fresh.  And what's even better is that we are no longer broke-ass students so we can actually afford to buy something from you.  Take a lesson from the staff at Trash & Vaudeville and cut us some slack.

I don't write many Yelp reviews but I had to take the time to write this one because the staff at this store were hands down the nicest, friendliest salespeople have encountered anywhere in NYC!

I've been visiting this store since I was a little girl. St Mark's Place use to be so much different. Now its filled with commercial trendy stores and cleaned up a lot. Nothings changed much in Trash & Vaudeville and I like it that way. They still have a lot of spikes, studs, hair dye and Lip Service clothing. I love their wacky shoe section in the back. The punk rockers still work here, and occasionally you will see famous rock stars shop here.

This is a great NYC punk spot and one of my favorites for shoes. The entire back room of the downstairs section Is shoes and they have one of the BEST selections of creepers around. The prices are average for punk clothing, as everything is made in such limited quantities. They have a great selection of clothes and if youre looking for anything by Tripp NYC, this is the place to go. Jimmy is awesome and is more than willing to go the extra mile to make sure you leave happy. the outside is very loud and appealing and they always have heat music playing.

Could I borrow some money?  Apparently you have more than enough to go around.

I find it ironic that the people who originated this style were flat broke street kids, and now the same stuff is being sold to the opposite end of society.

A local institution that's been around forever peddling alternative clothing to the likes of the Ramones and who knows how many actual and aspiring musicians (check out the celebrity pics by the cash register - I'm sure Lydia Lunch and Jim Foetus must have stopped by), T & V is still holding its own with the best selection of alternative clothing in the country.  It's more rock/punk than goth (e.g., not that much lace or long velvet cloaks) but goths will definitely like some of what they see here as well.  Or the goth clothing may be harder to see because it's mainly black?  The prices are pretty good considering the clothing is alternative; $40 - 60 for a unique black jacket with zippers or the insane asylum strapped look isn't bad at all.  There's a sale section too, for the budget conscious.

It does seem like it never changes but that's not a bad thing as this place will always bring back memories. I'm also happy that Tripp and Lip Service are still around and have even been joined by new alternative clothing labels. I hope that there will always be a market for black thigh highs with the word "slut" emblazoned in gothic white lettering.

There's a separate shoe area (with more clothing) downstairs and that has quite a few classic alternative t-shirts by Bauhaus, Siouxsie, the Smiths, the Cure, Joy Division, etc. - nothing obscure, but classic.   I haven't seen such a large selection of creepers in aeons.  They carry lots of plaid, striped pants, skinny pants, belts, patches, bags, studded jewelry galore, shower curtains, and hosiery.  They even carry my black umbrella with skulls.

According to Mr. Morose, this place is much better than Gothic Renaissance.

Holy crap, can you say flashback central?

The very first time I came to NY, I was what scientists would refer to as....a goth chick. Yep, I'm sure it's hard to believe now, with my love for good wines and vintage and antiques that at one point, I had permanent Manic Panic stains on my hands and wore boots that made me 6'3 and owned more pairs of skirts and pants with zippers on them then was probably legal. Yep, that was me and today, I spotted this place and had to go in for old time's sake and it hasn't changed one bit.

You will still see the cashier with the blue hair. You will still see kids shopping with more metal in their face than an auto shop. You will still see those same tall platform boots and stripper heals and ya know what, I'm really glad that it hasn't changed. I loved that period of my life and had a blast and if kids still have a place to go that isn't, dare I say, Hot Topic, then that is cool beans and just peachy keen and nifty with me.

I have been lusting to go back here since the warm, over-sunny days of summer.

I haven't made it, so I will just briefly gush about the single, lonely, perfect boots I bought here. I am particular about shoes; most look pretty ugly to me. But before that, I did offhandedly notice the rest of the store. Were I not so specific in my shopping, and were I loaded, I would have bought a lot and ventured upstairs.

I wanted boots that laced up fairly far. And one magical day, when I would later embark on a journey to see my beloved Rocky Horror Picture Show, there they were. Or there IT was, one unassuming boot with a short wooden heel.

It was part of a only pair left, and somehow it fit my ginormous foot. So did the other one (fancy that!) and the lanky, unfed hottie who retreived its partner waxed poetic about a lonely pair of shoes on its way off the racks miraculously finding the perfect feet just before it was too late.

Maybe the ideal convinced me. Maybe it was the magic of Rocky Horror. Maybe it was cos I've been looking out for tall, lace-up boots from far too young an age. But I bought those $125 suckers, and I love Trash & Vaudville for bringing us together.

Really bad customer service. The girls working there were really assholes to my friends and I. One was offended because we wanted to hold onto our wallets when they checked our bags. Hey, who cares! It's nothing personal. But I'm sure she was more intent on chewing her gum and talking to her fellow Hot Topic coworker on the trials of everyday life.

The inventory. It's exhausted, overdone, overplayed, and become too much of such costume attire. It's almost a joke now going into these years with how fashion has evolved. Good denim, bad everything else. Avoid at all costs.

When the trends change and hipsters are no longer dressing "Dark Pagan" or whatever the trend sites are calling it.  This place will still be here.  When Urban Outfitters over expands, goes bankrupt, and disappears. Trash and Vaudeville will still be here to provide you with subculture apparel from subculture brands.  Not just skimming the surface of music inspired trends, but actually digging down into it and living it as a lifestyle.

T&V has survived some of the best of it's time, like Religious Sex for example.  And, they still can exist even in what is becoming Little Tokyo, surrounded by yummy eateries and Karaoke bars.  Hopefully reminding people what St. Marks used to be and still keeping a small piece of that culture alive in NYC.

As long as they continue to support small design houses and keep to their roots, I hope that they will maintain their client base.  Their shoe selection downstairs is very impressive and carries some of the brands that no one else is willing to carry (misses Wheelz of London desperately).

Came back here a second time, just to look around.

I found out that the owner of Trash & Vaudville, Jimmy Webb, is such a sweetheart. He was very polite and thoughtful. All of the employees here are very helpful.

I decided to buy a 'Dead Kennedy's' Pin from here that was less than an inch in diameter. It turned out to be $2 for that measly pin. I guess it was alright because it is hard to find these sort of band pins anywhere else.

This place was so much cooler when I was a size 2 16 year old.

I remember being in love with this place when I was here 5 years ago, and really nothing has changed - but now I'm older and a size 8 and there is pretty much nothing in the joint that fits. And a lot of the stuff was crazy overpriced. NOTHING in the way of larger sizes. A higher end Hot Topic, I suppose.

This is the last of the greats, people, if you want quality goth/punk gear. Religious Sex is long-gone, and practically everything else is sub- Hot Topic. Yes, T&V is a little overpriced, but the brands they carry don't fall apart after a couple of hard nights out dancing, and pretty much everything in here is cool/gaudy/elegant/unique/hot. I love coming in this place and being overwhelmed by all the colors and textures, or seduced by the shoes (they have the real-deal Fantasy brand from England downstairs - the one that http://pennangalan.com carries and that Demonia knocked off).

The real trick, though, is that you have to know how to shop the place. Jimmy puts all sorts of stuff 50% off on the sale rack if it isn't moving fast enough, and chances are, dear freaks, it's going to be something in a style or brand you like. When I visit this place (a payday ritual for me), I usually make a beeline to the back to see what I can get for a ludicrously low price.

And did I mention that Jimmy's a total sweetie?

So.. my friend bought Sisterhood-of-the-Traveling-Pants-esque shoes from Trash and Vaudeville once. She's a size 7 and I'm an 8.5/9. While walking around St. Mark's.. her shoes were bothering her.. so she popped into T&V for some alternashoes. She ended up buying these high heeled mary janes that say "rock" on one shoe and "roll" on the other. I'm a mary jane freak (the shoes not the other stuff).. so I told her they were so damn cute! She encouraged me to try them on despite my protests about us being different sizes and VOILA! They fit both of us. Freaaakkkyyy. She gave them to me since they're not really her style (her aunt bought them for her).. but I can't help but think we're like.. so.. like.. connected now as friends. It's probably why I was maid of honor in her wedding.

I think my friend's aunt might be a regular because last time I was here one of the guys recognized her and was really nice. The shoe selection is sweet but the rest of the store can sometimes be hit or miss. We saw some awesome luggage here once! Random. It's definitely a mixed bag.. like you can see hoes, teens, and people looking for costumes at any point in time standing next to each other and shopping in harmony. Kinda sweet.

    Hmm... 3.5 stars.

Being a punk is expensive, get used to it. If you don't feel like tapering your own pants like we used to do, head here for some hot Tripp skinnies! They're perfection in a pant.
The shoe selection downstairs is excellent! The band shirt collection is impressive! The staff is.. well, snotty. What did you expect?

I freaken love this store! I have been shopping here since my first trip to NYC in 1990 and haven't looked back!

There is a fine selection of Tripp NYC, Lipservice, Fantasy UK shoes and various other brands. Yes, some of the fashions are better suited to a 90lb goth girl but they do carry a variety of sizes for most garments.

I happily purchased a black denim Tripp motorcycle jacket and some kick-ass faux leopard fur goth boots, similar to ones I had in 1985! I felt like a wee goth lass again as soon I put them on!

M got his T & V brand stretch jeans that the manager Jimmy helpfully suggested a smaller size.. and he was right!

Some reviews state bad customer service - I have NEVER received bad service - I've even done mail-order over the years and they've given me a discount!

I mean, this isn't the friggen Gap or J Crew! That's why we shop there!  All the people working there were actually friendly and helpful to M and I.  I didn't get any vibes, just cool people working there. If you go in expecting them to kiss your ass, well you may be disappointed and are probably annoying anyways!

Oh yes, check the sale rack in the back - we got some great items marked down! M also got a pair of sweet Gun motif Andy Warhol sneaks for super cheap!

    Love love love this store!

Three stars because the gothier stuff at Trash is still all right, their boot section rocks, the employees in both stores are pretty cool, and there's no arguing that stepping inside is An Experience. It's a given that a visit is going to be pretty expensive.
I don't mind paying fifty bucks for a pair of Trash & Vaudeville brand jeans, but I was in here yesterday and all they stock is Tripp NYC, from jeans to gloves to scarves. There are a couple of other names in the dresses section, but you've seen Tripp brand clothing and it's not worth more than the $20 you pay for it at Hot Topic.

At this point Vaudeville's basically an overpriced Tripp outlet--not very alternative, and not that much fun to walk around in anymore.

Part punk fantasyland, part rock royalty dressing room - no self respecting musician would miss a trip to this legendary destination when in New York.  From Louis XVI - inspired velvet and brocade frock coats (that I have to keep my hubby Gwydian away from!) to "breathing is so over-rated"  second skin trousers there is no better place to channel your inner rock star!

Make sure you say hello to "Jimmy" resident style guru who will guide you to the absolute right outfit. Prices vary but are worth it for the looks these getups will elicit!  With everything from tees and jewelry to hooker heels and outrageous jackets there is something here for all wallets.

+ Excellent variety of t-shirts, a vast selection of shoes, unique jewelry

    - A bit pricey for some items, snotty clerks (minus this one guy in Trash, he was helpful and rather cute)

I built it up to be something different over the years, but I'll still come back... there are shoes to be bought. *lust*

At first glance, you'd think this store is for only one type of person. But, if I managed to find multiple things I liked, then so can you. Being a fan of all kinds of Rock n Roll, Trash was able to provide me with the coolest t-shirts. From the Ramones, to some Bowie shirts I've never even seen before.

Trash is my favorite store in St. Marks. Also a great selection of shoes and sneakers, check it out!

(PS, Does not hurt having Mamoun's Falafel a few doors down :-P)

Trash & Vaudeville is hyped up and really pretentious. There was a time when the store had decent sales on shoes. They used to sell 80% of the shoes there for $20 each, and if you bought two pairs, you'd get a third pair free!

Not anymore. They store has become extremely over-priced. They expect customers to pay $100 for a pair of creepers, just because they have plaid cloth pasted on one part of them. I find the jacked up prices insulting.

To add to that, the employees are rude and arrogant. If you ask for help, they get pissed off and are reluctant to help you.
