9 reviews for Trapp Family Lodge
We just spent four wonderful days at the Von Trapp Family lodge. We came on the snowshoe trek package.
First, the location is just wonderful. Tucked into the hillside outside of Stowe, VT. We flew into Burlington, VT, and took at quick 50 minute drive to the lodge. We found the staff just wonderful, everyone friendly and inviting. We took one of the Saltzburg rooms, very spacious and comfortable, and very clean. The california king bed was just wonderful.
First day we took and "offroading" snowshoe trek with a guide, keith. A perfect representative for this family owned establishment. He took us to the "sugar shack" where they make maple syrup, then through the woods, off trail, on a nature walk. fantastic!
On day two, my wife and I took a showshoe walk to "the Cabin" about 3 miles away and 650 feet up. The walk is not for the faint of heart, but was good to accomplish. At the top we had a cozy lunch of black bean chipolte soup, ham sandwhich, cider, and huge cookie. The walk down was easy and allowed for more sightseeing.
On day three we went on a 2 hour backwoods snowmobiling tour. Very nice. This was off lodge at and establishment in Stowe.
We returned in early afternoon and took in some indoor rock climbing before having the most wonderful hot rock massage.
Dinner and breakfast were included in our package. The 5 star chef and staff do a magnificent job. We were absoultley well pleased. The smoked pork chops are to die for!!!!
This trip was the two of us...they have many activities of the children.

So my girlfriend and I won a trip to ben and jerry's ice cream factory. So we stayed at the Trapp Family lodge which was kind of high on a mountain. This was in 2005 or so in November and it was snowing but it was so pretty. We stayed four nights at Trapp that we didn't pay for but I saw the prices and thought damn I'm glad were not paying for this. Our room was kind of small but not to bad and it was very very nice. The staff was pretty friendly from the valet guy to the waiters at the restaurant. While eating at the restaurant I had some chesse that was so damn good I didn't know how to act. The Trapp lodge also has condos which I thought was very cool. My girl and I did some walking around taking pictures of the leaves and stuff. I really had a good time there I wish I could afford to come back.

I stayed here with my girlfriend and this was Oct 26 weekend. There was snow on the ground at the beautfull scenic mountain top resort. Its so full of history of the Von Trapp family and there are pictures that adorne every wall of this lodge. The land around this lodge is so vast, from trails to skiing to mountains and horsedrawn sled and buggy rides. It is a huge resort with many of the rooms overlooking the mountains and having small decks to sit on. It was so nice we couldnt leave the room. We visited nearby Burlington just 30 mintues up the road and we went sight seeing quite a bit! The breakfast was quite good and contained lots of Austrian favorites. I would recomend this resort!! It is a bit dated and needs an upgrade though.

Remodeled. When? 1978 by Chrissy, Janet, and Jack. or maybe the Ropers.
Come on. either make it classic or make it modern.
Expensive to boot.

We spent a week in one of the condos outside of the lodge and had a very nice time. The condo likely hadn't seen any remodels since it was built 20 years ago, but it was spacious and the views were amazing. The actual lodge looks like a sorority house living room (overdue for a remodel) with flowered carpets in mauve, forest green and cream. The place is over-ridden with kids running all over the place, a bit hectic!
The restaurant was good, not great, and definitely as cheesy as you'd expect it to be (the harpist played "the Sound of Music" during dinner).
The gym is sparkling clean and brand new. The great vistas over the valley made working out enjoyable.
A major plus is that the staff LITERALLY could not be any nicer. They were the nicest, most friendly, most accomodating group of employees I've ever encountered. It really made a difference our stay!!

For Austrian Tea House
If you're going up to the Trapp Family Lodge for the view (not to stay over) as I did last weekend, lunch at the Austrian Tea House is worthwhile.
The food probably won't change your life, but it is good and well-prepared and satisfying, and Austrian-y. And if you put your name on the list for lunch by 11:30, you probably won't have to wait long for a table outside on the deck.
The reason I give it four and not three stars is because I imagine there aren't many more beautiful places to enjoy a cold beer and a great roast beef sandwich in the whole state. The ruben and the wursts were great too. The chocolate silk cake was insanely good and huge and took all 6 of us to finish.
And you'll get a kick out of the hokey old-school uniforms of the prompt, friendly staff.
I'd make an annual trip there if I could.
The Trapp Family Lodge essentially gets the same rating as Steve's Greek on Newbury owing to the belligerent manner in which they informed my they were not serving. Finding the place on dark, windy Vermont roads complete with collapsing barns and off-putting hill country locals was bad enough, but when I finally reached said tacky lodge masquerading as a set for the Sound of Music, all I wanted was a piece of bloody salmon at 9:05 and I had to stand at attention like some peon private first class before anyone would notice me.
I understand that restaurants want to close their kitchens and I did arrive a few minutes behind time, so I elected to give the Trapp one last chance to dazzle me with an alpine brunch the following morning. That was another senseless waste of gasoline because at 10:45, a rather normal time to be brunching in Boston or virtually any other place I've ever been, I was once more curtly informed that the Trapp was closed. I found the people at the front desk to be extremely helpful and polite, yet all the other employees seemed to think I was out of my gourd for wanting eggs at a little after 10:30 on a Sunday. Strange...

I'm surprised by the negative reviews; I think we've gotten lucky on our visits! (We have a guest house there, which may make a difference.) The staff were always friendly and helpful, and even took us on a tour of the Lodge itself so we could see the rooms, which we would not have otherwise since we were ensconced in a private house just down the hill.
Dinner in the Lodge's restaurant was lovely, if a bit pricey. We had no problems whatsoever with the staff or the service, and we enjoyed the live pianist performance throughout our meal. Afterwards, we retired to the lounge just outside the restaurant/bar, which is something of a greenhouse: full of flowers and big, cushy sofas to match, where we could take advantage of the Lodge's free WiFi and check our email.
The Austrian Tea Room also has good brunch food and a selection of teas, although their hours are (as mentioned in other reviews) somewhat restrictive and unpredictable. But the gift shop attached is full of great Vermont touristy stuff - postcards, high-grade maple syrup, books about the von Trapp family and so on.
The new rec centre is gorgeous; the pool and sauna are lovely places to relax each night, and there are yoga classes, a rock climbing wall and a fantastic massage therapist available.
The view from the Lodge (and the houses) is incomparable. At night, it's so silent and dark that you feel a world away from everything. We loved our experiences there & can't wait to go back.
My heart was not blessed by the Sound of Music emanating from The Trapp Family Lodge, nor was my stomach sated by their Weinersnitzle. In fact, I despise this establishment, and I hope the same thing happens to it that happens to the Von Trapp residence in Austria circa 1939 (see corresponding film).
We had heard lovely things about the Trapp Family lodge and made our way up the steep hill it resides on, dodging deer and threatening gusts of wind in the meantime (also with our gas tank on the dreaded E). In fact, we were enormously determined to have a meal here on our mini-vayk because of the high praise it had received high and low from our peer.
Anywho, we arrived five minutes after nine and the kitchen had just closed. It wasn't this that bothered me. I understand that when a kitchen shuts down, it shuts down. What bothers me is the belligerence of the staff in the dining room, ignoring our presence for about four minutes until one brave employee soldiered over to tell us we could not be served. Of course, we accepted this and inquired as to whether or not the bar might still be serving food, which was decently full and laughs/Adelvise could be heard ringing down the hall. This same employee gave us a curt "no" and seemed to think we were certifiably insane for looking for some brat post nuen uhr.
The only good service we received was from a concierge who directed us to Steve and Erika's (see review please) and the door man who saw our sorry, famished asses out.
Although we were treated poorly, we decided to give the Von Trapp Family Lodge another go because it really had received high marks from a trusted amiga and it also seemed like fun. In the morning, we returned feeling fresh after a shower at The Green Mountain Inn (see review for more on showers, Inn) and with politically correct, non-discriminant and open minds.
Apparently, breakfast is only served until 10:30 and not a moment later and (I suppose this is an authentic Austrian tradition) Von Trapps NEVER serve brunch. Brats and shnitzle at 10:40 a.m? Nien, Danke shon! Again, the sorry sight of a staff employee laughed at us for thinking 10:40 was a normal time to eat breakfast and again, the door man kindly directed us elsewhere (see review, Coffee Corner).
Keep your steep hill and faux Austrian fare. I've been to REAL Austria and had enough brats to last a lifetime ...
*Also, if you are looking for a good brat, I have been consistently impressed by the ones they serve at Epcot's "Germany." Just a note in case you are ever in the Orlando area!
