This place is awesome!!! Since my landlord wouldn't let me get a carpet installed I went to them in need of a carpet remnant big enough to cover my entire bedroom floor. I had just met with Empire (who is supposedly really cheap) who had quoted me $800+ just for the piece of carpet (not even bound). At Tradeway I was able to get much more for LESS THEN HALF the price!
They had a great selection (3 full floors) & EXCEPTIONAL customer service! I went in on a budget & was still able to go home with my first choice rug (& padding). I was even able to get the edges bound so it doesn't curl up or fray (which I normally wouldn't have had enough for) & which they made a house call for to tailored it to my exact measurements. Daryl (the manager) is a miracle worker & everyone who worked there was very helpful (not pushy AT ALL)! I will definately be back & highly recommend this place to anyone in need of carpeting!!! -

I went in simply to get some remnants for pet cage insulation but as soon as I walked in to the enormous warehouse, I my eyes got wide. These people are not fooling around. This place is serious about carpet. They've got the goods on a vast selection of simple and elegant to wonderful and unique residential as well as high end hotel carpet. I felt a little silly for what I was looking for but everyone there was really nice and smiling, even the customer leaving as I was going in said "good afternoon!" Must've been in a good mood. Darryl took time for me and helped me out with what I needed and was genuinely friendly and fun to talk to.
My husband and I are still redecorating the house we bought in Richmond just over 2 years ago. The wood floors and some new carpeting are the next project so now we know where we're going to look for something really unique.
Give them your business, totally worth it.

A true gem. Prices are more than fair. selection is great, and all of the folks here are very kind. Rich helped me find two carpets, taking me to see their whole selection on three floors. The guys stayed late to unroll the carpets and make sure there was no discoloration. Since we were on a tight timeline, they had both rugs bound and ready for pick up in just a few days. I am so happy I found this place. I want to buy carpet for everyone here!

Great selection of carpets. Fabulous customer service, could not ask for better service! My only issue was the carpet didn't go down as well as I had hoped, but that was probably a product of the person who put it in. I would also suggest checking the carpet color under multiple areas of lighting as when we got it home the color looked a bit different. I would definitely go back here again though and have already recommended it to other people.

My parrot loves my roommate and when she locks him out of her room he sits by the door and picks at the carpet in a desperate attempt to either get her attention or dig his way into her room. Instead he gets my wrath and no more money spent on new toys until I fix the hole.
First, I went to Home Depot where I encountered an arrogant jerk unwilling to help who told me it was impossible to buy a small piece of carpet, only the whole roll... peace out buddy, time to yelp it up...
Today I went to Tradeway where a really nice guy knew exactly what I wanted and helped me pick out 3 possibilities and on top of it he GAVE them to me for free! Score!
(And yes, mattresses and an assortment of junk come to Richmond to die, but don't let that, or the 2pm drivebys on cutting scare you away) -

I've been going to Tradeway Carpet Outlet for more than 10 years and have always been extremely satisfied with the outstanding customer service of Darryl Johnson. The selection and quality of flooring is excellent!
Tradeway Carpet has everything you could ever think up and everything you need from carpeting your entire home to creating a custom size area rug - all for an affordable price! Definitely the best place to go for your carpet needs! -

When I had to update the upstairs unit of my house earlier this year, the color consultant my painter recommended tipped me off to Tradeways. Although it's in a rough industrial area of Richmond, in the kind of place where people used to, you know, actually *work*, you will find no better place in the Bay Area to shop for carpet from a selection or value standpoint. Rich gave me the lay of the land and I set off through three floors of carpet and linoleum to find enough carpet to update my upstairs unit. On the way I found a crazy assortment of carpets and I started thinking of aesthetically unwise ways to update my floor and kitchen décor. Let's just say the carpet would definitely NOT match the drapes.
Found my carpet, had a chat wit the very helpful guy who wheels out the carpet to the elevator, rode the elevator and talked about the history of the place, and they unrolled the carpet to check for any issues. There was a tiny hole that they could easily repair and, now that it is installed, I have no idea where that hole ended up.
They have a recommended carpet installer, Tadd, who did quality work quickly at a good price. Great experience beginning to end! -

Honestly, there is NO REASON to shop for high quality remnants anywhere else. Tradeway blows everyone else out the water on Assortment, Quality, Price, and Customer Service. Great Great shop - from the Store Manager (Darryl Johnson) to the two young men preparing the carpet for sale.
I shopped around and did the 'Frontage Road Shuffle" checking price and service from Berkeley to ElCerrito/Richmond: The carpet shop in Berkeley near the self storage place is nice (ask for Jason-nice guy). Folks further down near Central Ave/Costco - -service/personality is hmmmmmmm.
I got a referral from a contractor friend asking him where he goes for carpet and he said TRADEWAY. He won't go anywhere else and now neither will I !!
We got a very high quality remnant (12X14) and pad for LESS than ANYWHERE else I saw/priced - -including Home Depot. -

A lesser man may have turned back on his journey for carpet gold as he traversed the seedy side of Richmond to the mecca of carpet stores - Tradeway Carpet Outlet. As I exited the highway, I passed not one but three discarded mattresses on the side of the road - it was as if the mattresses traveled here to their death just like elephants do on the wild planes of the Serengeti. Off in the distance I think I heard a gunshot and police sirens - did that stop me? No - when you come this far for discounted carpet - there is no turning back. As I neared my destination, an old weather beaten building, a chill came over me - would this be the end of me or would I leave with luxurious carpet to tickle the feet of my family?
Inside my senses were overcome with the sights of countless rolls of carpets, the smell of foam pads and the after taste of a burrito purchased earlier in the day. I was greeted by Darryl, a likable fellow who gave me the lay of the land. Any carpet could be purchased by roll, cut to size or made into a remnant - all I had to do was pick it out from their vast selection. The carpets ranged from the high-end stuff you see in magazines or posh hotels to carpets that will bring back memories of your grandmother's house or an off the strip Las Vegas casino (in my case, both).
After searching the three floors of carpet - I found her under a flickering neon light. A beautiful pattern and just the right neutral tone so as not to offend any of my carpet colored sensitive house guests. A work man brought her down to the first floor and placed her on a carpet rolling machine so that I could "inspect the weave" - she looked fine and I could imagine running my feet all over her. I gave my measurements to Darryl and I was assured that she would cut, trimmed and bound to my liking. The transaction went smoothly and the price was more than fair.
A few days later, I picked up my new carpet which had been tightly rolled in plastic and brought her home. I look forward to telling my grandchildren about my journey to Tradeway Carpet Outlet and you will too. -

I found Tradeway Carpet Outlet on the web. This is the best carpet source I have ever found, on or off the web.
They have three large floors of carpets, with huge roles of carpet available in all kinds of colors and designs. (The building was originally the carpet warehouse for the Pullman Car company, which built railroad cars.
The carpets are mosty high end nylon, the kind that last years and years without crushing. I bought 139 yards of a beautiful blue nylon carpet fo4 $14 per yard.
Somewhere in the carpet was an "optical defect". Which meant that a thread was missing (out of the tens of thousands of threads which make up the twelve foot wide carpet). They put it on a roller machine and we examined it. I couldn't see, and still can't see, where it's missing. It's a very good quality nylon, with relatively short dense pile.
I wanted just this kind of carpet because I wouldn't be using padding under it, because the padding would act as insulation. My Eichler built house has hydronic radiant heat. With this carpet the heat rises through the pile. Most people who have seen it think that there is padding, the carpet is dense and springy and soft underfoot.
This is a great team, every person in the warehouse was helpful and likable. I want to mention them by name but will have to come back to edit later.
This is THE PLACE to go everyone. You will have a better onsite selection than anywhere else in the bay area. And the prices and service are superb. -

Wow this place is phenomenal! Rich and Darrel were awesome, answering all of my many questions. The selection is mind-blowing, I've never seen so many carpets. They're honest about the minor flaws some might have and will cut any piece as long as there is a 10'x12' piece remaining for them to sell. They bind, as well, for $2.50/linear foot. They have contract delivery people if you need them for local drop-offs.
DEFINITELY worth checking out if you need carpet or area rugs on a budget. -

This place is one that, once discovered, obviates the need to ever search for another place to buy carpet. We went in on Saturday and were immediately assisted by Kendell, who took us up on their big ol' freight elevator to the 3rd floor and then explained the lay of the land to us, answered various questions, and even moved some of the big rolls of carpet for us so we could spy what was behind them.
After making like water and flowing around from the 3rd floor, on down to the 2nd and finally to the bottom floor, we decided we liked a carpet we saw on the 3rd floor. Another employee, Alan, was just as kind, professional, and gracious as Kendell and assisted us with even more of our questions.
The manager, Daryl Johnston, then helped us by suggesting an economically reasonable approach to dealing with a couple stains that were on this otherwise gorgeous Masland carpet.
We used one of the installers on their list, Mike Sadler, and he too was professional and good. Arrived on time. Helped us move things for a minimal fee. And did a good job.
This place was great! -

The Holy Grail of Bay Area Carpet warehouses. Three floors of carpets, in a cavernous monolith of a building! Everything from cheesy 70's casino carpet, to plush raised "graphic" and berbers, to my personal fave, the lion in a crest carpet Scottish Rite secret masonic carpet. Rich is very nice and helpful. He'll even compliment your oddball purchases. Rich is also a huge fan of David Byrne. This Rules.
Also a shout out to younger black kid that works in the warehouse. I can't remember his name, but he is way cool and helpful, and has a great attitude and is properly built for lifting 12ft rolls of carpet all day long.
Check them out. -

Found out about Tradeway from an ad in the CC Times. The selection is unbelievable, the staff knows their stuff and are very patient. We purchased carpet for 2 bedrooms, bought 3 very long runners that we had bound and an area rug for the entry, all at significant savings over any other place, including online.
It's definitely worth your time to make the trip there. Be prepared to spend at least 2 hours looking - you'll need it. Oh, and if it's a little chilly outside, make sure you bundle up, as the warehouse is cold! -

This place is one of the best home resources in the Bay Area. A huge inventory combined with some of the most personally attentive staff makes it tops on my list. My first experience with Tradeways was during reconstruction following the Loma Prieta earthquake. They did everything possible to help during that difficult time. Today, so many years later, I experienced the same wonderful service and saved a ton of money too. Their remnants offer the the opportunity to purchase high-end materials that would normally be outside my budget. I wish I could give them six stars!

wow! this place is huge and there is so much to choose from! the prices are incredible! I wish I had known about this place before I spent a fortune on rugs! However, I was disappointed that they do not carry wool carpets but I was able to find a high quality stainmaster 8x12 remnant for less than $100 which would have cost me at least 3 times as much elsewhere. The binding service is also great at $2.50 a linear ft compared to $3 at other carpet stores. The employees are also really nice too.

I agree with Ben V. And I would like to clarify he and I have never met. This place is indeed the Holy Grail of carpet warehouses. What's even more impressive is the staff knows the inventory! There are 1000's of choices so if you go in and have a general idea of what you're looking for they will point you in the right direction. I've worked with both Rich and Darrel (sp?) and have to say they are both fantastic. They'll even recommend someone to do installation on the cheap if you need it!

This place is by far the best kept secret of the bay area. I was doing research on the internet about two years back and, by sheer accident, I stumbled across a review of Tradeway carpets. Oddly enough, I had been asking around, searching the net for weeks on end, calling carpet stores listed in the yellow pages, and, despite the fact, I had never heard of Tradeway! At first, I was reluctant to make the drive to Richmond, as I live in San Francisco, however, this place was well worth the short drive. It only took about 20 minutes to get there; the warehouse is located only a few short blocks from the freeway offramp.
You could get lost in this massive three-floor filled-to the rim warehouse that offers exceptional prices, amazing quality, and a beyond-IMAGINABLE selection of remnants/carpet/flooring; they carry all sizes, colors, manufacturers including bottom to top of the line synthetics/wools. Please be sure you have at least 3-4 hours of time to make it through the warehouse as there is an ABUNDANCE of inventory to choose from -- and it's often difficult to make your final selection.
I have purchased several remnants from Tradeway and have dealt with the same two individuals, Daniel and Darryl. Let me assure you -- they are a PLEASURE to deal with. They are friendly, helpful, fair, and they have an incredible sense of humor! Darryl will work with you to find whatever it is that you are looking for at the price that fits your budget. I can't say enough about Tradeway -- please do yourself a favor -- and see for yourself! -

Very strongly recommended for budget and value conscious customers. Took my elderly parents to finally replace their very old carpet. Only wanted to spend around $1200 for two fairly large rooms. Looked around warehouse on our own and found two matching carpets of sufficient size. Guys were nice, installer was nice, prepared, delivered, installed courteously and competently on schedule. Great experience. Carpet is perfect.

I'm not sure where to begin. The quality, service and flexibility was amazing. There was no pressure, but a real emphasis on my being happy with what I wanted.
Even after my installer messed up the stairs they were there with an installer that came and made it all better! They are a great team and I'll never go anyplace else for excellent service and quality! -

Richmond's best kept secret!: Don't let the location of this place fool you! Just because it's not in the best neighborhood, doesn't mean that they don't offer great quality carpet at great prices! I happen to stumble upon this place by PURE accident. I was searching for different carpet places in the neighborhood (Pinole, CA), I did a quick search on Yahoo Local and it pulled up a list of places. I made several phone calls to different stores and started setting up apt. times for estimates. When I called Tradeway, the gentleman that answered (Daniel) suggested that I come in because they had some decent prices for carpet. He was very nice and convinced me to come in (I wanted them to come to my home and bring me samples instead). In any event, I made the trip and boy I am glad I did! They had an abundance of carpet and different varieties. The staff was extremely friendly and very helpful! Everyone from the owner, to the young caucasian guy who hauls the heavy pieces of carpet (don't know his name), and especially Ritch (he was the one that worked with us) were extremely helpful! I have to honestly say that I was extremely impressed with the overall customer service. Ritch, Daniel, Tommy and Daryl were very nice. We ended up getting over 110 yds. of carpet for my mom's house (different carpet in several rooms) I would definitely recommend this place for folks who are on a budget and have some free time (well worth searching for the carpet you want)! In the end, I did get several different quotes for installation and carpet, and tradeway gave me the best prices overall! Not only did I get great quality carpet at great bargain prices, I also got outstanding customer service for a priceless amount! Thank you Tradeway! You guys are awesome! I have never felt so welcomed and respected by an industry dominated by men! I am obviously a female (mom), you men made me feel real comfortable. I will recommend this place to everyone I know!
