Review from Susan W.
Boston, MA
I've been having Brazilian waxes since the mid-90's when I was living in New York. I used to see Juracy at the J Sisters for years before moving to Boston. Since then I've searched high and low for someone who was as thorough, clean and precise as the J Sisters.
I was so happy to have discovered Barbara and her crew of top notch estheticians at Total Skin Care; they are THE BEST at Brazilian waxes. Barbara is my favorite; she's absolutely meticulous, gentle and funny! I have never had a single ingrown and, in fact, when I did make the mistake of going to someone closer to home for a Brazilian, Barbara gently and almost painlessly removed all the ingrown hairs from that mistake! I will never go anywhere else again!
I do have to comment on the review from the person who claims to have developed a staph infection from the wax at Total Skin Care. First, I am very sorry that the person had to go through the pain of a staph infection; they are painful and scary because some strains when left untreated have an approximate 80% mortality rate. However, it's important to note that the wax estheticians use is heated to upwards of 140 degrees. Most staph bacteria cannot survive at that temperature - the upper limit is typically around 118 degrees. Also, I have never, ever seen Barbara double dip. Never. She must go through at least 20 wooden spatulas in the course of one treatment with me.
As the daughter of a doctor and a nurse, I am particularly sensitive to cleanliness and adherence to proper disinfection techniques in health/beauty businesses. I can honestly say that Total Skin Care absolutely rates 5 stars in this area.
All in all - the BEST Brazilian waxers in Boston! -
Review from Saba N.
Had a great experience here. I've been going to Karen Golden for a long time (and love it there), but w/ her new late fee policy and lack of availability.. I had to try something new.
Barbara was great, she was very thorough and it was by far the best strip wax I've ever gotten. I also love that she doesn't book in advance - so you can call her up the day of and get something within 24 hours. W/ Karen Golden, you need at least one month notice.
Barbara, I will be calling you more often. -

I found this place through Yelp, and don't usually write reviews, but I had to post one in order to explain to everyone why they need to go here for any waxing.
I've been to Barbara, Rita & Neira several times now, and all three of them are amazing. They make what can be an excruciatingly painful process very relaxing and I can't imagine going anywhere else at this point. I'm moving out of state next month, and am seriously trying to figure out how I can schedule trips back to Boston every other month in order to see them.
I also recently tried a facial here, and it was the perfect combo of relaxing and deep-cleaning.
I DEFINITELY recommend this place! -
Review from Kat O.
Somerville, MA
After having explored my options a little around Boston for an esthetician I can stick with, Rita is the one.
I go to her for brazillians and the occasional eyebrow, but boy oh boy, is she thorough. The wax part is super quick and relatively low pain. The tweezing part (when she removes in-grown hairs...) is definitely the most painful, but she's still very quick and honestly, I tell her this every time, it's okay that it hurts just GET THEM ALL OUT! I leave there completely hairless every time, confident it will grow in normally for next time.
She will tell you to exfoliate the area and to use witch hazel (a natural astringent available at CVS or anywhere, really) to prevent in-growns, and let me tell you, DO IT. The first few times I saw Rita she had to dig out at least 5-7 in-growns every time. Now, I knew she was being thorough, but the pain is pretty bad for this part. BUT! NEVER FEAR! The exfoliation / witch hazel combination WILL stop in-growns from happening! The last few times I went to her I had only 1 or 2 - so much better! Follow her advice.
On a general note, she's got a great sense of humor and is lovely to talk to for those great 20-30 minutes. -

Great place for a brazillian wax.
They are very thorough and not so expensive.

I CONTRACTED A SKIN INFECTION FROM THIS PLACE!
I used to be a loyal customer; I went every 3 weeks for Brazilians for over a year. I've seen all three waxers, and all have been good or "good enough." I've never had problems with ingrown hairs, and have always taken care of my waxed area.
I've always noticed they "double dip" when waxing, but when I brought it up I was told the wax was hot enough to kill all the bacteria.
UNTRUE! I contracted a skin infection from this place. I had to get a boil lanced and be put on antibiotics! The doctor told me that I had a staph infection and that she felt waxing from an unsanitary place was the culprit.
Ladies, do yourself a favor and avoid this place. It's not worth the pain, embarrassment, and your health. -
Review from Lisa D.
Top notch service! Without putting my personal business out there, I will simply say, job well done Barbara and let's leave it at that!
I had no problem getting an appointment for a Saturday morning, and upon walking in, Barbara was ready to get down to business.
What a great lady, I felt as though I knew her for years, we talked, we laughed, and then it was over, done in a flash and again, all I will say is job well done!
First time customers can save 10% by printing off the coupon under "specials" on the website. -

Barbara does real good thorough work and is a pleasure to work with. I've been to a few places for facials and this place puts the creme on the cake. I would definitely recommend this place to others for skin care related issues. They also accept credit cards unlike some of the other shops i've been to.

Had my first ever Brazillian last week with Barbara. She was a riot! Definitely made it as "pleasant" as it could have been. There was some double dipping going on which makes me nervous, but their prices are a bit cheaper than what seems to be average in Beantown so you get what you pay for. The receptionist was an absolute doll and fed the meter for me when I didn't have enough change. Very sweet people here!

I need to change my review after seeing Rita:
One day later and my skin is BRUISED! I have never seen that happen before, and I've been getting waxed since I was 16 years old.
Also, she double dipped her stick, the bed was covered in a single sheet ( which I had no idea if it had been changed between the previous client and myself), and to pick out ingrowns she used this weird needle device I have NEVER seen before. Stick to Karen Golden Skin Care, seriously.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I am yet another enthusiast of Barbara's. Number one reason to go see her: the stories about "her pornstars." Really, priceless.
Number two reason to go see her: she's super intelligent and thoughtful. Every 6-8 weeks, I enjoy an hour long conversation with her about everything from politics to literature.
But the real issue here is the waxing: I leave hairless and totally confident in the cleanliness of the salon. Sheets are changed, wax is fresh and while the place isn't new, it's clear they take care of it.
Finally, the receptionist brings in her dog. I always arrive early to spend some time with Max. -

I've gone to Total Skin Care for 2+ yrs and recruited many friends and cowokers to go as well.
All the girls are great...Yes Barb is wonderful but if you're in a rush the other girls are quicker with brazilian/vag waxes.
If you're not a talker or don't like to have convos when you're hair is being pulled out then perhaps it's not the place for you.
Bring cash for tip but credit cards are accepted. -

It's true, Barbara is the best. I went to see her for the first time last week for a Brazilian and had such a positive experience! She's so easy to chat with and I absolutely LOVE her personality. This wasn't my first Brazilian - but if you are looking for a place to try one out, Total Skin Care is it. Good location, clean facilities, and amazingly friendly staff.

check your modesty at the door... it's a brazilian...
no frills, but the ladies get the job done and done extremely well! Both Barbara and Rita will have you laughing while banishing every last hair from down there. Yes, tweezers and a lighted magnifying glass may be involved, but honestly I prefer the meticulousness over the stragglers that others may leave behind...
I would never go anywhere else; the ladies at TSC are amazing!

Review from Natalie M.

Barbara is as great as all the reviews here claim she is! I've never had a more meticulous eyebrow wax, and they came out amazing. She really took her time by putting on small amounts of wax at a time, and handed me the mirror halfway through to make sure I was satisfied. Her amazing personality only contributed to my wonderful experience at total skin care.
My only reservation is that the magnifying glass Barbara used to examine my brows was rather dirtied, and the ceiling to the waxing room I was in was exposed wires and wooden planks, which would have contributed to a more enjoyable experience. So if you are looking for a super posh salon, this may not be your place but I will definitely be returning to this hidden gem again! -

Confessions of a Hairy Indian Girl: Ch. 4--Follicular Follies
"Mmmhmm..." Rita murmurs while looking at my face through a large magnifying glass.
"Um...yeah I know. It's...uh...been a while since I had anything done...cuz I was busy and...yeah..." I mumble.
Rita gives me a sharp look. "You don't need to say it. Trust me, I can tell."
This is beyond mortification. I am trapped under these harsh, glaring lights, tilted back in this deceptively plush chair. Indeed I am frozen by the cold, calculating gaze beneath those spectacles.
She told me not to speak but for some reason, my idiot self feels compelled to extrapolate on my sins.
"I...I just wanted it to grow out because...because they took off too much. And I...I didn't know what to do..." That's right. Blame it on somebody else. They're the ones in the wrong. It's not my doing. Blame it on the Benefit Brow Bar, on the ladies in Delhi that screwed up my eyebrows, on the overzealous actions of Leeba some three years ago after which my eyebrows have never been the same.
But that doesn't explain why I let my lip get to its current condition. Hmm...can I blame it on my parents for conceiving such a hairy child? Genetics?
"And I'm Indian...and we're just really hairy and..."
It's not working. She knows all too well. She's heard all the excuses. I wonder how many times she's heard such rambling confessions. She gives me a threatening look and proceeds to dole out my retribution.
The air stills. No words pass. The only thing to break the silence is the telltale bubbling of molten wax, horrific rips tearing through the air, and an almost imperceptible hiss of pain. And when it's over...judgment.
"There's not much I can do. Your eyebrows really don't look good. This is not the shape for you at all. I don't know who did this to you. But it makes me so angry. Don't touch them for a long time. Just let them grow. I can help you, but first you must be patient." She hands me the mirror.
Oh Rita...you have the silken voice of a siren of the Mediterranean as you yell your UBurger order through the door. Those gentle hands of yours deftly apply lotion to my battered flesh. And now, I realize that sharp gaze of yours is not one of malice, but of tender compassion.
I understand Rita. I understand.
Confessions come with a price. This one about 33 dollars or so. But it is a small price to pay for deliverance from fugly eyebrows and unintentionally luscious mustaches.
Hail Rita, full of grace. May you too know glory under those forgiving hands. -

Barbara is the absolute best for Brazilian, underarm and legs. I have never had an eye-brow wax so can't comment on her expertise.
I have been waxing for about 20+ years after a couple of razor cuts as a teenager- eck!!!!I There is no one as painless and fast as Barbara. It is close to Harvard Square (fraction of the cost) with street & meter parking -

Okay, I cheated on my brazilian waxer and came to Barbara. Listen people, I couldn't help it. My lady was on vacation for a week and I was forced to find other services before I kill myself.
Barbara, I might be cheating with you more often. Before, I was getting hard wax that was hand applied and taken off. That, was painful. The lady is good and quick, but Barbara....you have a microscope, and this may just be the longest lasting, most meticulous wax I have ever had. Let alone, she is hilarious, has tweezers and gives you 10% off your first visit.
I think I might be trekking up to Allston once again to get a wax. And I might be moving to a different person. Oh my god...did I just say this on Yelp?!Listed in: Shopaholics Confessional

This is a review for an eyebrow wax.
My brows are UNEVEN and there is a patch of missing hair on one of the brows where too much was removed. This was not the best experience I've ever had. I will not be back. I guess for a brazilian it won't be a big deal because no one really looks at it... -

I love this place. I come in here for an overhaul a couple times during the year. Rita, the facialist is a doll who does an incredible job. The massages are great too. The services are fantastic and the prices are oh-so very reasonable too.
I think this is the only place in Boston that offers a "male Brazilian", you know, just in case your a guy who needs one.Listed in: Preening

Despite the rave reviews, my experience here was sub par.
I went in for a bikini wax, and that in itself is already a painful experience.
The first thing i noticed was that the 'bed' didn't have those paper over it, not exactly sanitary if you think about laying your bare ass over sheets that have been laid on before you...*shudders*
Yes, bikini waxes are generally painful, but this one was almost unbearable.
During my wax the lady was also questioning where I went before and my experiences there, it did make me a little uncomfortable. i understand the need to know your competition, but maybe she didn't phrase her questions well, I sort of felt like I was being interrogated.
And finally, yes they do accept credit cards, but they prefer cash. Literally her exact words were "if you dont have cash today, I'll be OK with credit card". Um. right. -

This review is a LONG time coming! I will never forget my freshman year at BU, when the girls of 7C gathered around a Cali duo of best friends who tried to convince us to get brazilians, and to go to Total SKin Car on Comm Ave...well, i finally gave in and tried it at the end of the year. AND HOLY SHIT, it is liberating. Well I am now a graduate and STILL go to total skin care! Rita is beyond amazing and I have never had any complaints about this place! Just recently, i tried to make a last minute appointment with Rita because I was going on vacation to get a brazilian and my eyebrows done. she was booked for the day, but told me she would stay after hours to accommodate my schedule!
Now for my brazilian, I had no worries. Rita is quick, painless, and thorough. AMAZINGLY thorough! she goes through after the waxing with a tweezer and a keen eye to make sure she gets it all done.. no hair left behind!!!
This was my first time getting my eyebrows done, and I was a little nervous. but Rita took her time with me and I was extremely pleased.
When I went to pay, I tried over tipping her because she offered to stay late for me, but refused the money (and I was a bit aggressive with the tip, but she pulled a mom on me ), saying it is her job and that the normal amount is fine by her...
SERIOUSLY...

This place is really clean, professional, experienced and friendly. They have outstanding service. I got my very first brazilian here and i'm glad i did. All the "waxers" are great and they do an amazing job. They never make you feel uncomfortable throughout the whole process and you can rest assured they KNOW what they are doing. I HIGHLY recommend this place. I dont thnk i know anyone who has had a bad experience there. They're prices are the standard prices for these type of services.
Since i'm a typical college student now, i don't go here anymore because it's far and a tad expensive for me. If you don't mind spending $60+tip for a brazilian, definately come here. it's a hidden gem and tucked away in a corner but it's always busy and you should book in advance. -

Barbara rocks. I went to them at their old location, followed them to their new location. I've been straying, though, because I think there are definitely cheaper ones in the area (sorry girlie!) However, I must say the service is great. She's VERY kooky and friendly and has some awesome stories. She makes you feel totally comfortable, she's very thorough, and it's not that painful. I've probably come here about 10-15 times, and only once did I find some obvious stray hairs but I think she was in a rush and I was squeezed in last second so I understand.
I definitely recommend her for first time waxers. Not great for clean freaks though, the waxing bed has a reused cloth covering it that might freak out the extremely picky. I didn't care at all, though. -
Review from alison k.
well at last - a wax in boston that is FANTASTIC! Just been and got defuzzed and was pretty painless. Rita was very thorough and we had some pretty random chat! I didn't want a brazillian, I just wanted a bikini and this was included in the price of a full leg which was SWEEEET (and to be honest I got more off than i ever have before!) !! Was very reasonable think it was 86 or somthing for full leg bikini and underarm. Although the location is somewhat random and maybe not the most luxurious, was certainly the cleanest one I have been to in Boston so far.
Not giving it full 4 stars as want to see how quickly regrowth occurs and want to go again, but this is a great place to go in Boston for a wax. -
Review from Lena S.
Allston, MA
I'm really perplexed by the glowing reviews of this place. First of all, you really shouldn't have a dog (and I LOVE dogs) in a place where you're waxing people's private areas. It's not sanitary. Secondly, the waxing room is dingy and scary. The sheet covering the bed had clearly not been removed after the last person was there.
As for the Brazilian, well, it was outrageously painful. It was my first, so I didn't know what to expect, but I've since gone elsewhere and realized that there is NO reason to be in excruciating pain. I don't remember who did the job, but I think it was Rita. Anyway, just my two cents but I'd think twice about this place. -

Barbara is the best for brazilians and eye brows! She's hilarious and the farthest person from awkward when it comes to being totally exposed. She will always take extra time with you if you need it and doesn't charge extra for it like most places. Fair prices too!
Also, I would never again let anyone but Barbara touch my eye brows. She's amazing. -

This is the same business as the one listed on Babcock St, they just moved about a year ago.
I must say that I had been in search for a good brow wax for years, and this is by far the best ever. I have been going to Barbara there for about two years, but everyone there is very good. I have nearly lost an eyebrow in the past, and she helped to correct this and get them on the right track!
Barbara is the friendliest and funniest woman, and gets along great with everyone (also the owner). They also do manicures, all waxing, and facials here as well.
Is it a little pricier than your average salon, but worth EVERY penny! -

So I went here recently for my first brazilian ever; I was unbelievably nervous, but I decided to give it a go because this was supposed to be the spot to go.
First impressions of this place were not terribly impressive to be honest, it was under a realty office, it had a slight mildew-scent, and it didn't seem like the spa-setting that I expected for the best wax in the city.
However this place is proof-positive that first impressions aren't always right. Barbara put me in the room and went to get some water. So here I was, about to get my first Brazilian... my business on display, about to experience untold pain... needless to say, I was a little on edge.
Barbara came in and clearly this was not her first rodeo, she took one look at me and could see that I was nervous. She sat down and explained the whole process, then got to work. She told me to breathe... she told me to breathe again... and she went for it. She was such a soothing presence that I by halfway through I was joking around with her and much more relaxed. She let me know when it was really going to hurt, and gave me tips so that it wouldn't hurt as much the next time.
She did ask me to clear something up here though... the price for a brazilian is $50, not $60. I paid $60 with a tip, but the cost of the wax is $50, and has been for a long time. the tips is up to you, but bring a little cash, because they don't generally take tips on the credit card.
This could have been a disastrously terrifying experience, but Barbara made it so stress-free for me. I will undoubtedly be back to see her! -

I had an appointment today for a brazilian with Barbara....wow, she is wonderful!
It was my first time at Total Skin Care, you have to walk down some stairs to get to the place, but it's not difficult to find at all.
I tried to make an appointment at Karen Golden, but I'm not about to make an appointment for a brazilian a month in advance....if I need my muff waxed, it needs to be done asap!!!
I'm so glad I made an appointment at TSC. Barbara was very pleasant to talk to given the situation with her big magnifying glass right in your business. She made me feel at ease and I laughed with her the entire process. My previous esthetician didn't do such a great job, I had a few ingrown hairs and never had any luck getting rid of them. Those ingrown hairs did not stand a chance between Barbara, her magnifying glass and tweezers.
As for the room, I did not mind seeing the planks of wood for a cieling or the bright lights as other Yelpers have complained about...if anything, I'd rather have my esthetician get all the stragglers!
She is very friendly and laid back, we chatted about everything and she knew what she was doing down there. I plan on going back to see her and will most likely get my eyebrows done too.
The brazilian was $60 + $15 tip...very well worth it! They take credit cards, but cash tips are preferred. -

Let's start with positives. The location is convenient, the receptionist is helpful and pleasant, and the decor is warming. For that I give it one star.
Given all the good yelp reviews, I went here for a bikini and underarm wax. And I have to agree with other Yelpers, AVOID RITA LIKE THE PLAGUE! She is one of the estheticians and she will leave your skin on fire. I have never been in so much pain from a wax before.
Normally, the esthetician applies pressure to your skin immediately after ripping off the wax strip. This helps to alleviate the pain. Not speedy Rita. SLAP wax on RIP up. Repeat. SLAP-WAX-RIP-REPEAT.
My skin stayed red for a day and I got tiny bumps around my bikini area, which is usually a result of bacteria infection (most likely, bacteria in the wax from double-dipping the wooden stick). As if Rita presciently knew this would happen, she advised me to apply witch hazel, an antiseptic, to reduce the bumps.
Also, if you have keratosis pilaris, or sensitive skin, I wouldn't recommend this salon. It will upset your skin.
Since then, I've been going to Sasha Salon near Harvard Square where they use hard wax (no cloth strips), and it's much gentler on my skin. It's less pain than clothe-strip wax and I haven't had any flare ups. -

I had only had a bikini wax once before going here, and I was pretty nervous. I set up an appointment with Rita and it was wonderful! She made me feel very comfortable and chatted me up while she did the wax. And not the old-woman type of talk either, haha.
My roommate goes to Barbara and she says she's great as well.
I go there regularly now and I usually get an appointment whenever I ask for as long as I call 2-3 days in advance. Love it! -

Hair removal central! Two thumbs up for Total Skin Care. I first went to Total Skin Care a few months back based on the Yelp reviews I read and I must say I was not disappointed. Rita is F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S. She made my eyebrows happy (Yes, they were quite sad for sometime). Its truly amazing how eyebrows can change your face, if waxed/tweezed properly.
I've been to TSC for both eyebrow and bikini maintenance. The prices are affordable, and Rita is very thorough. Ive been to a few other places in Boston, and I must say TSC is the most reasonably priced hair removal facility for the quality of work that is being done. -

As many of the previous reviewers stated, Barbara is awesome! She is friendly, courteous and passionate about her job which is great considering she does Brazilian waxing! She didn't rush and she was super friendly which made the whole unpleasant experience a lot easier. The only thing I did not like was the usual yellow wax. I was sore for a couple of days and I've had the blue-green stripless wax done before and have had no irritation so I've gotten used to that. Anyway, great place for waxing!

I simply LOVE Barbara. She makes what could be an awfully painful and awkward procedure as pleasant as humanly possible. She is funny, interesting thoughtful, and will entertain you (with conversation, song, etc) to keep your mind off the pain. She is fast and her results are top notch.
The place is quiet, clean, and private. Twice when I went I had two different women other than Barbara, and I was very pleased with their results and service as well. The ladies here are amazing, and the prices are totally reasonable given the area and the quality of service.

I highly recommend this place. They are professional and very welcoming. Sometimes there is a receptionist that can seem harsh but she is just down to business. Barbara is fantatic and is very particular about who she has working with her. They have to be great! I have been to almost everyone there and they ALL do a great job. Barbara is a talker with a lot of funny and informative things to say, so its good conversaition but may add a few more minuets to the process, a note if your a hurry. Rita is thorough and Neira is fast. This place has a great team and even though I moved north of Boston I will continue to go here.

I really wanted to like this place, after reading all the rave reviews. Firstly, it seemed a bit disorganized- the receptionist was a bit brash and they didn't even have a cash register. Nonetheless, I got a bikini wax with Rita and she was nice enough, and very quick. I've had bikini waxes done a few times, and this was definitely the fastest I've had. It seemed fine, but one day later was extremely red and it looked like there were 2 patches on opposite sides of my bikini line (about an inch inward) that were red and sore- I noticed that they looked like missing pieces of skin, as they looked like scabs. It looked TERRIBLE and took a week to go away. Personally, I wouldn't go there again.
