Tosler Davis is regularly described as a "light, airy loft" space frequented by hip, artist-types. While I can't vouch for the clientele, as I come in after hours for apprentice haircuts and haven't interacted with many, I can attest that the atmosphere is indeed both light and airy, slightly (non-threateningly) masculine, and divinely comfortable. There is no doubt from the time you walk in the door that this is a high-end salon, but it completely lacks the kind of pretension and fawning of comparably-priced joints.
I go in for regular cuts with Patty, who is not only fab and talented but also a real sweetheart. I am going to be sad if she finishes her apprenticeship before I can afford to pay full price.
From what I have seen, Alan Tosler is straightforward and extremely adept and I recommend him highly to people who don't need their hairstylist to exude fake fabulosity. There is a real dignity about the place, but you definitely feel included in this. Chic but chill.

I absolutely LOVE this place! I don't know if Renee is still there, but I used to get my haircuts from her. She knew exactly what she was doing and I always got compliments. I've been to all the big named salons, but Tosler Davis is the BEST. Great stylists, unpretentious front desk, GREAT customer service!! I'm waiting to go back to NY to get my haircut.
