This place has awesome salsa.  Too bad it is such a small cup for four diners.  They serve the same size to a party of one or two.  There are no free refills...hmmm!
The Huevos Rancheros was delicious.  The egg was cooked to perfection and the veggies, rice and guac were excellent.  The Sante Fe Burrito is truly HUGE - also delicious- great salsa verde!  The Grilled Skirt Steak was tender and properly marinated. Check out the Enchilada Oaxaca it was a real winner.
When visiting family in this area again, we will return.

Sorry Tortugas but your food doesn't cut it.  I stopped by here on a Thursday night to check it out.  From the outside it looks like a plaza restaurant but inside is a lot larger (and quite dark).  Appeared that the night we went there was only one waitress on staff who looked overworked and not so happy to be there.

We were hoping for some authentic Mexican food but it's closer to tex-mex.  Had the VEGGIE SAMPLER  -  spicy sauteed vegetable chimichanga, a guacamole enchilada and a bean burrito ($11.95).  It was "nice".  The chimichanga was soaked in grease and left some soggy clear lettuce underneath it.  It looked like an eggrolll.  We ordered some quac with chips in the beginning and while the guac was tasty, it was such a mini order for the price.  The food wasn't very memorable and the service was pretty slow.  I don't think I'll stop back in here.

The food is not bad but not as authentic as you can get in the Norristown area.

They have applied for a liquor license so soon it will stop being a BYOB.

I'm a huge fan of Mexican food, and I would definitely NOT call Tortugas Mexican.  The food is bland, the nachos were soggy, and the place is so dark you can barely see what you're eating.  To top it off, the service was TERRIBLE!  We waited 10 mins. just to get our drinks!  Needless to say, we will not be back.

I have been eating at Tortugas for years, almost every week. My kids love the ground beef soft tacos so we keep going back. An average dinner starts with chips and salsa. The chips are OK, and the salsa is more like spicy pico de gallo, it is quite good, and I feel healthy eating it because it is all fresh - I finish a bowl every time. I enjoy my chips with a frozen margarita (yes! they have their liquor license now) so I am in a great mood by the time my food comes.

I go back and forth on dinner between my favorite 3 things, Chicken burritos (served wet with sauce with guac on top), Fish soft tacos, or a chicken taco salad. All three are great so it just depends on my mood. I have had other things as well, the steak is good, the California burrito is giant so you need to be hungry for that...

Service: has been pretty good, I go when it is not very crowded so I really don't have an issue.

Quality: As has been said in other reviews, the dinners are pretty consistent, but can very depending on the cook.

Dislikes: Salsa is not endless; you need to pay for refills. Still don't accept credit cards. Not a big fan of the TVs they added.

Price: I have never had an issue with their prices, they seem very competitive.

Overall: I will keep going back... and I am looking forward to the next visit.

Food was decent here.  I found the burrito to be super yummy and the price was pretty good (Choice of two items with rice & beans for $9.99).  The restaurant itself was a little dark and could use some extra lighting.  The service may have been a little slow, but I really didn't notice it while I was enjoying my watermelon margarita and the good company of friends.  I would go back again.

I've eaten at Tortugas many times over the years, sometimes for dinner and sometimes for lunch. While it may not be the most authentic Mexican I've ever had the food is consistently good. I've tried many things from the menu and have yet to be disappointed. The complimentary chips and salsa they give is delicious and very fresh tasting.

As others have mentioned the service can be a little slow at times but it's never been unbearable and it always seemed to me to coincide with them having a larger than average crowd and just being slightly understaffed - most times I've been here at lunch it has just been 1 waitress and 1 busboy doing the whole place.

The only slight downer is I have noticed that the portion sizes appear to have shrunk the last few times I have been here, at least for lunch and that is mostly what I come here for as it's close to work. The burritos and other lunch platters definitely used to be a bit bigger and more packed. Maybe it's just a variable that changes depending on who is cooking? It's not a deal breaker but still, it's something you notice when you are used to being served a certain size.

Overall a good option to satisfy your craving for South of the border.

UPDATE:  6/5/11:  I can't bring myself to eat here anymore.  The place does not seem clean.  The last time I was there, I found a hair in my taco.....A HAIR.  A big greasy hair.  It's a shame because Tortugas has some things going for it in the food department.  However, with other choices quickly springing up around it, Tortugas needs to get with the program before I'll ever go back there (if ever).  For now, even though it's been months since I ate there, I think about finding that hair every time I think about Tortugas.  And seriously Tortugas, do something about your debit card purchasing system, it's pathetic!  You have to pay money to do debit!!

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I've always liked Tortuga's, they are okay.  I really enjoy their chicken taco's and the nacho chips that come with the orders are really very good.

They are not a great place to order take out from, its better to go there and eat.  When I order the chicken tacos to go, I find that they are VERY water logged when I get them home and the once crispy shell falls apart right in my hands.  Generous amounts of chips and salsa are given and that is always appreciated.  I do agree that they are overpriced though.

They really need to update their debit card system or something, it always takes longer than usual when I'm paying with a card and I think they even have a surcharge for using a card!

Good chips. Fresh pico served with them that had a nice fiery kick. Extra chips and salsa are a nominal charge of about 2.00. Create your own combos are the best value here. 2 choices for around 10 3 for about 12. I got a taco, tostada, and chimichunga. You choose your type of sauce and spice level to it. I chose the red sauce spicy. It was served cold on the side. Tasty, but pointless on the side. The chimichunga was good, but could have used the sauce on top or sour cream or something on top. Taco and tostada were good too. A good reasonably priced place to go to after a day of outlet shopping at Limerick! FYI .99 cent surcharge added to credit cards.

I don't agree with most of the reviews on this restaurant, I think the food here is good.   The enchiladas are similar to what you'd expect from a small mexican restaurant in the city.   However, I give it only 3 stars, because I do think it is over-priced.   Expect to pay around $40 for a party of 2.

The absence of a bar is disappointing, but it's more of small BYOB.    The most important detail to note is that they do not accept credit cards.   This is a problem for many of us that don't carry much cash anymore.  However, they do accept debit, which most people have on hand.

Unless things have drastically changed or you haven't had anything Mexican other than at  "Taco Hell", I would steer clear of this place.  Unfortunately, it is still the only  Mexican player in town.  After  living for10 years in SoCal this was extremely dissapointing.  Frozen cauliflower and broccoli covered with Velveta posing as a "Grilled Vegetable Quesidilla"......need I say more?

I'm a Spanish instructor, so I know good Mexican food, but this is good Tex-Mex fare for this area.  I had their special homemade chipotle sauce which was good and I doused it on everything I could.  This place is more like 3.5 stars.  They're typical Tex-Mex, but not anything special.  I'd go back with one of my coupons, but I prefer more authentic Mexican.  I can't remember what I had, but just be sure to order the chipotle sauce.  You'll thank me.  Please pass the sauce.

I agree with big b.  The food here isn't that great and they don't have a liquor license so no Margharita's.  Slightly better than Taco Bell, but not much flavor.  I love mexican food and I won't be coming back to Tortuga's.  It's a shame because it is so close.
