I was feeling ravenous after the gym and Tortas Los Picudos caught my eye on the walk home. This was my first time going to a Mexican place that sells solely tortas. The nice lady suggested the pierna torta since I was overwhelmed by the options so I went for it...HUGE sandwich for around $7! This is no Subway that's for sure.
First, they toasted this flat bread/bun on the grill alongside the Mexican style ham (aka pierna) that smelled heavenly while cooking. Then it was topped with a choice of cheese (I got American but they also offered Swiss and some Mexican cheese), avocado, jalapenos, tomato, and lettuce but I opted for no mayo, sour cream, or onions. Pretty loaded sandwich if you ask me! (http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
It oozed with 3 slices of melted cheese but I had to pick out some of the jalapenos since it got too spicy. The ham was dripping with flavor but a bit on the salty side. I loved that I didn't have to pay extra for avocado too. The bread was kinda thin so it got soggy pretty quick from the meat juices. Not a tidy sandwich to eat at all so thank god for all the napkins they provided! Another cheap, filling meal in the Mission though. Success!

I'd read great reviews about this place and I thought it was good. You have a ton of options for what meat can be added to your torta/sandwich - I chose the Milanesa (breaded beef) - it was pretty tasty. I'm usually not a sandwich person so for me I was a bit underwhelmed, but I still think it was good for a sandwich.
If you love sandwiches, you just might love this place, but for me it tasted what I expected it to taste like...at least it wasn't horrible food.
If I go back, I'd definitely try the other options, like enchiladas, since those looked great.
The chorizo torta is DAMN good. I had my usual liquado de platano and that was tasty as usual and I got both for $6.
They really need to work on efficiency. Take a name with the order or give a number. Otherwise it's a mess the way it was this weekend after the street food fair.
When not busy, which is anytime not on the weekend, this place is awesome.

The warm queso fresco and avocado with sour cream instead of mayo is the best combination your can put on any sandwich. These things are ginormous; it can easily be two meals or split with a friend! They don't speak English and I'm not sure I understand their spanish. They may lose your order if you are rude and they do take a little while you your sammy, so have a little patience especially if they are slammed. Their juices are great!! No matter what combination you request it will be a cure to anything that ails you. They are also very clean.
We stopped in after the SF Street Food Festival Debacle on Saturday in search of some, eh, street food. I have a feeling we would have been better off braving the lines on Folsom St - it took a good 30 minutes to get my torta. And I only got my torta after asking where the heck it was - clearly they had lost my order and made me one only after I inquired.
The torta itself was loaded down with pork, cheese, peppers, etc. and pretty damn tasty. But definitely 5 minute wait tasty, not 30 minute wait tasty. With so many options in the Mission I will probably give another shop a shot when my torta craving hits.

they honor their special offer even till 7:30
aguas frescas (had melon, and strawberry) -- good
tortas -- amazingly tasty
the tortas here weigh 1.7lbs, so they are big
of course went for the milanesa de res
and the jamon, chorizo, huevo, both with queso fresco
highly recommended!

5 stars. At least.
Must: order a "Vampiro Tropical" ~ 192387409839 fruits, veggies and whatever else is in the area of the blender all mixed up into a glass of awesome.
Caution: these sammys are as big as your head.
this is a get in order and get one place.. and i mean that in a good way! This is as good as it gets! If u want to go to mexico by just taking a bite of something this is the place!!!! There Tortas are the BEST and i mean the Best in town! Its the closest you'll get to a actual Mexican Torta! This place is CLEAN,CHEAP, And AMAZING at the same time that you just have to try it for yourself to actually know what i mean! The dont only have tortas, so if your not a sandwich lover there is other choices to choose from! another thing i recommand if your a strawberry lover is there strawberry agua fresca! it kinda reminds me of the creamy strawberry popsicle you buy from the ice cream cart.
Went for lunch at Tortas Los Picudos. They make Huge tortas (Mexican sandwiches). I got #3 Pierna - smoked pork ham for $6. They put mayo, cheese, tomato, lettuce, avocado, butter, jalapeno peppers, lots of meat on a nice hot roll.
I wanted a liquado strawberry $3 - but didn't get one, next time.
They also have tacos, burritos, sopes, quezadilla (sic), hot dogs, smoothies, aguas frescas. They also have alfajores (cookies) - not sure the cost, looked good.

I went back here recently and ordered the wet torta, which I'm told is how they eat tortas in Mexico City. I hope to find out myself one day. What you get with the wet torta is a fried pork sandwich, but the entire thing is smothered in some sort of spicy tomato sauce. The bread absorbs the sauce brilliantly.

The tortas here get a 0/5-- bad bread, old meat (i don't want to think about how old) inattentively reheated on a nasty griddle, mayo in huge room temp jugs, just bad all around. you can't throw a cat in that neighborhood without hitting a much better torta place. I mean, the last place for a torta.
That said, the Rastafarian-grade juicebar is a 5/5-- get a torta somewhere else and come here for the vampiro (DF-stylee), the beet-charged carrot-orange, or whatever else you drink. Nice people workin', definitely take-out only.

Although this place has "Torta" as part of its name, the enchiladas are incredible. Not the soggy Tex Mex type of enchiladas that are common. These are the fresh tasting enchiladas that you get in Mexico. The way they look, the way they are served and the way they taste -- just like in Mexico.

Ordered a chicken torta for $7.42, which included the mayo, tomato, lettuce, avocado, butter and jalepno peppers. The chicken was breaded, thinly sliced. Fine. However, the chicken was way overcooked and I couldn't bite into it without yanking the entire thing out. I thought stfu and just try the damn thing. What threw it off though was the lettuce...who in the world likes brown lettuce? I don't. Nice people, neatly made sandwich, okay taste, but I've had better.

I've never had a torta before, but they're delicious! Hot, toasty roll slathered with sour cream and butter, then stuffed with a variety of meats and cheeses - what's not to love? The Cubano here is pretty awesome because it combines basically every type of meat (sausage! breaded beef! ham! turkey!) as well as a generous portion of avocado.

When I lived on 24th and Balmy, my bff/roommate can here way too many times. In retrospect I don't know how I don't know how I stayed so thin. On any given day, you could find us trying to cure our hangovers at Tortas Los Picudos or La Taqueria.
We usually ordered Milanesa or Pierna, but I haven't had anything disappointing there. Everything is good. If you live in the Mission you definitely have check this place out. Another great cheap eat in the Mission.
I haven't found a better Torta yet!!
Woah..today was the best Torta I have ever had of my life. For $6 you get a HUGE A$$ torta too. I got to share one with my gf and I was still very satisfied. The bread is fresh and toasty and they use QUESO chese on their tortas. I even took a look in the back and they had the biggest box of Queso cheese I ever saw in my life. The one warning I have with this place is that you have to be patient as they don't speak the best of English when you order. You know it's a great sign too when a bunch of latinos line up for a taste of Tortas. I will definitely be back but I don't think I will try a burrito or a taco. They seem to be Torta Professionals there and I will stick with it.
Can there be anything bad to say about a sandwich made with butter AND mayonnaise?
I think not.
The shredded pork torta is amazing here. Get it with everything (+ queso fresco)-- all the ingredients are fresh and add something flavor/texture-wise to the sandwich. The jalapenos are particularly spectacular. The bread was nice and soft and didn't distract at all from the "meat" of the sandwich. Prices are cheap (I think the sandwich was $6.50?) and the size was perfect to share as a snack or to enjoy yourself as a whole meal.
I should not have written this review, now all I can think about it having another torta!

The most amazingly deliciously satisfying torta I've ever had. $6 gets a huge torta. $0.75 extra for avocado. Combonacion torta w/ chorizo and carnitas is my favorite. I'll be coming back regularly!
I would eat the crap out of these every day if I could. THE BEST.
This place is the shizzle for huge tortas and sammys. They also have tons of juices, aqua frescas, and shakes.
There's nowhere to sit for large groups, so I guess you gotta get it to go or sit at one of the small tables or counter.
They don't speak much English which can be a problem for some people who understand no Spanish.
An office favorite is the Cuban.

Jesus what a massive sandwich. I've been known to put down an amazing amount of food, but even I couldn't get through this monster. Seriously, go with someone and split one, or show up very hungry / stoned. I learned the hard way that these fantastic sandwiches unfortunately do not keep well, even like three or four hours later.
Perhaps I got the wrong thing here: a salchicha torta, which was essentially a deluxe hotdog (with avocado). Will have to try again. And brush up on my Español.

This was my first ever Torta experience and it was AMAZING.
There's a huge menu hanging behind the counter listing about 25 different versions of the mexican sandwich but I didn't even look at the list and just ordered exactly the same thing as my sister: A combo Torta with Chorizo and Smoked Pork Ham, mexican cheese, avocado, lettuce, jalapenos, etc.
It was delicious, and the perfect pick-me-up lunch after a rough morning at work. My sandwich was huge and my sister, a Torta Aficionado, warned me that I would not be able to finish it. To which I replied, "Go big or go home fool...," (this is my new motto)...Needlesstosay, we both ended up finishing our sandwiches AND our orange sodas.
Evan L. also tagged along as usual, and of course he had to be different and so he ordered a Torta with Chorizo and Eggs...it was just like a breakfast sandwich and it looked delicious as well. He claimed my combo sandwich had too much meat and scared him, interesting...I say the more meat the better.
This place is a perfect little whole in wall restaurant...A Torta here will set you back $6-7 but it's worth it and you'll be full pretty much all day long.

We tried 2 tortas, the carnitas and the shredded pork. Both were good - I preferred the shredded pork, which was pleasantly spicey and flavorful. In comparison the carnitas was slightly bland, although the meat itself was pretty good. The bread isn't much more than functional, and the mayonnaise is a bit too much for me - I might try it without next time. But, the avocado is good and plentiful, and the sandwiches themselves are huge. The smoothies were very simple but good. Anyway, I'm looking forward to going back and modifying a few things, and continuing to avoid the multitude of sandwiches containing hotdogs.
Do you ever get tired of having burritos all the time in the Mission? Ready for a change but still want that flavor explosion and heat in Mexican food? Then it's about time you tried Tortas Los Picudos.
Mexican subs, like the equivalent of a good Vietnamese sandwich. Comes with your choice of meat topped with lettuce, tomato, pickled jalapenos, avocado, onion, mayo, sour cream, and your choice of cheese (they recommend queso fresco - I asked because I am easily overwhelmed by too much choice). You also get red sauce of green sauce to go with your sub (too much pressure in these decisions!).
I got the Cubano which from what I could see on the menu came with ham, pork, ham, and pork? I couldn't figure it out, but whatever! It was really tasty. In the end I could make out ham, bacon, and hot dogs. I wasn't sure if I couldn't figure out the 4th meat or if maybe there were only supposed to be 3 meats and I just dizzy reading the menu. In any case, there was so much food I was only able to finish half to my disbelief. But now I have half a yummy sandwich to look forward to at lunch tomorrow.
Tip: Cash only. Cubano was $7 + tax, most others are $6.50 + tax. This place also does aguas frescas, milkshakes, and smoothies.
Bike Parking: Designated bike racks across the street.

While these were definitely the most authentic I've found in NorCal, I was somewhat disappoint w/ the meat. I had the Milaneza (thin breaded fillet, fried) and while everything else about it was tasty, the meat was very hard to chew, almost rubbery. However, I will DEFINITELY come back, but I will probably order something else.
Also, when they start to get a crowd, they seem to mess up on juice drinks: I ordered mango, but instead received a yummy oj.
Awesome tortas - with a huge selection of tasty meats: breaded chicken, chorizo, smoked ham w cheese, e.t.c. I love the fresh condiments - especially the added flair of pickled jalapenos.
Make sure to try their fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies. I like the Pina Colada Cubana- Pineapple, Strawberries, Bananas, Coconut Milke, and Ice.
The people working behind the counter are really nice and its fun to watch them do their art.
This is one of those places I will come back to again and again even if the price is a little high.

With gentrification seeping into every neighborhood it's nice to see that this section of 24th St. still has character. And by "character," I mean Mexicans. There may come a time in the near future when I utter the words, "What the hell, I remember when this used to be dead hooker central and now they've got a fucking Jamba Juice here!" Anyway, where there are Mexicans there's good food and this is no exception.
My recent introduction to the wonders of the Mexican torta has led me to Tortas Los Picudos on 24th St. It's not huge and like any place that serves up delicious and inexpensive shit, it tends to get packed at lunch. Still, totally worth it. The tortas are massive and served on a nice toasted roll with the usual suspects: tomato, lettuce, avocado, onion, mayo and choice of queso fresco or American cheese. American cheese? What are you, five? Be an adult and get the queso fresco.
In addition to the twelve or so different tortas offered there are sopes, tostadas and hot dogs. I got one for The Kid out of curiosity and when they asked if I wanted everything on it I said yes simply due to the fact that the line behind me was stretching out the door. It turns out that "everything" includes tomatoes, mayo, mustard, onions, jalepenos, and bacon. Whoa. The hot dogs are also inexplicably split into quarters lengthwise. It was good in a Mexican chili dog kind of way if not just a little "busy."
They also do a brisk smoothie business there but I've never bothered when there's aguas frescas right there. By that same token you won't be seeing me going into Jamba Juice and hitting them up for tortas. Hopefully, we won't be seeing any Jamba Juices popping up because I have a real fondness for Mexicans (dead hookers, not so much but better than Jamba Juice.)

Sope soujourn.
While walking down 24th St. to get on BART with a friend, I mentoned I could use a little something to eat. This friend has lived in the city nearly all his life and knows every nook and cranny of the Mission's food terrain. He said there's a great place just a couple blocks from here (at Mission). Well it was more than a couple blocks and I was a bit tired cranky, glowering at the extra city blocks that were passing.
We entered Los Picudos which was clean, colorful with fruits that they juice for you and bright. Thought I was gonna get a Torta but I wasn't really feeling the white flour bread meaty thing. My boy suggested the sope. The wha? "SOH -peh".
That's right folks a lovely, thick corn tortilla grilled and mounded with pinto beans, chicken, lettuce, salsa, and queso fresco. Each ingredient proportioned perfectly to set one another off. WOW. The little circle of masa was fresh, fresh, double the thickness of a normal handmade tortilla used for tacos, and soft, easily split by the side of your fork. A revelation for real. And worth the walk.

Pretty good. I felt like I walked into a restaurant in TJ.
The tortas are huge and juicy.
I went for the combination, carnitas y jamon. with the works.
for the cheese I went for the queso fresco.
The torta rocked.
I was a little disappointed with the agua fresca... melon.
It was too watered down.
Going to try a liquado next time.
This place is popular... it's good.
This place provides a couple of my favorite things... tortas, aguas frescas and licuados.
The torta that I had was good, but not the best I've ever had. They began grilling the meat for my meal after I placed my order, definitely a plus. The bread they used for the torta was toasted very evenly and very tasty. All the other ingredients were just as good, especially the queso fresco.
My licuado was also very good. However, I sucked that one down very quickly. That was my bad, I guess I underestimated my thirst.
This place has a small seating section which is nothing great. you'll be facing a wall for your meal. I do like how they have Salsa for you to squeeze on to your meal. I always question the freshness of the product in those squeeze bottles, but, I made it out alive so no harm done.

I went here for the 1st time a few weeks ago- HOLY SHITES they make some of the best enchiladas I've had in a long time!
The place isn't much to look at, but service is friendly/efficient which works in my book.
My girlfriend had the torta, which looked yummy, but I just wasn't in the mood for something buttery that time around... for sure the next time and I am looking forward to that visit!

I went here with a friend who kept raving about their amazing tortas, so I had to try them for myself. I got carnitas with queso fresco and all the fixings. My friend got breaded fried beef and we swapped halves for some variety.
Ordering was easy: Pick a meat (there a lots of things on the menu that may sound scary, so it depends how brave/adventurous you are), pick a cheese, and read the toppings carefully before you say you want everything.
The breaded fried beef was a little rubbery and kinda hard to chew through unless you have seriously serrated teeth. I thought the carnitas was much better, flavorful and juicy, not over-fried or dry. The torta is enormous and may require mental preparation before attempting to finish it. It's a little messy, but get all the fixings if you're not counting. How can you resist mayo and jalapeos?
We also got pina-colada smoothies, blended with fresh fruit, but it's kind of like getting a chocolate shake when you order a double-double and animal style fries. Be ready for pain.
The seating is mostly around a counter facing the walls, with only a couple small tables in the middle. Locals packed this place soon after we sat down, so I knew it had to be good even before the tortas were ready. As we were eating, they started playing this cheesy techno music, like something you might have heard at your middle school dance. Umm, yeah. Stay focused on the food, they're trying to make you fail.
There's an ancient pistachio machine in the corner. I swear they're all petrified.
If you happen to finish your torta, be prepared for a brutal food coma.

I grew up in the Bay Area. Growing up, you're always told that, when you go to the Mission, you get a big, phat burrito from La Taqueria, El Farolito, et al. But I also watch TV, and on this show Three Sheets, a guy goes to Tequila, Mexico in search of...tequila. He then finds a Tortas shop that looked and sounded unbelievable awesome. This motivated me to find the best tortas The Mission had to offer.
So, you have Tortas Los Picudos. Honestly, the torta was fantastic. Not mind-bending unbelievable, but seriously, seriously satisfying. I had the beef "Milanesa" torta, which is thin, breaded beef in a torta the size of your head, with all the fixins. More importantly, the fixins are fresh. As are the jalapenos that magically transported from the market next door into your sandwich. And this is for about $5? Awesome.
Another thing, most visitors to these parts of the Mission are a little...intimidated. I admit that, even though I've been through this place many times before, I still am sometimes. Luckily, the staff here is so friendly and so kind and so downright nice that you can leave your worries at the door. I stumbled through attmepting to order in Spanish, failed, then came to some common understanding based on hand signals and odd noises resembling spanglish. But in the end, I ended up with an awesome torta. The size of my head.

Great new find for me! I had the Pescado torta and it was awesome. I wanted to try the torta de pierna (marinated shredded pork) that I see other Yelpers raved about but was reminded by my friend that today is Friday (Lent). Glad it made me try the Pescado! Next up is the de pierna or maybe the hotdog with bacon and peppers.
Saw all the reviews on yelp and decided to give this place a try. To all the hype the yelpers are giving to this torta joint, I would say that this place was not what I expected. Me and the GF shared a carne asada torta (as we learned to try out the food before ordering too much of what could be mediocre or just plain nasty food) and it was just okay. Nothing spectacular. I had better at a little town up north in Williams (those tortas are really good). What we really dislike is that there meat was not cut up in the torta. It was a couple of wide long slices of meat and was hard to bite into. The meat did not break easy, so it made the torta really messy after every bite.

Americanized Tortas - hot dogs?
Near comatosed right now (still) as I reflect on our tortas eaten four hours ago. Good value, really good aguas frescas, but an odd torta experience I must say. Let me start by saying I love tortas and surely know good from bad, terrible from excellent.
The tortas here seem oddly americanized and unlike most I've had, which is a significant number. Now one could argue that a torta is simply a Mexican sandwich of unlimited incarnations; process and specific elements defining (bread and sour cream) and I could see those points. I do think the breads (bolillo or telera) are the most defining characteristics, but the primary fillings should be relatively consistent. Example - if you ordered a torta con pollo, one would expect pollo (chicken) that would fill a taco or burrito (pollo asado or shredded with sauce). However here it's a chicken cutlet - breaded and fried. The Cubana which is more unique but still authentic, includes ham, pork and sausage - yet it's ham, pork and "hot dog" here.
Now don't get me wrong, they are tastey, but surely average all around. I wouldn't go out of my way to have another torta here. $5.50 for a fried chicken, butter, mayo and sour cream gut bomb - good deal to some ehh. Their frescas and jugos are really good, but this isn't "Frescas Los Picudos" is it?

Yes, it's cheap. Yes, it's greasy. Yes, you'll be left with heartburn if you order a spicy chorizo torta. Yes, there ain't a lot o' white folks frequenting this joint.
No, the "sandwiches" aren't amazing. And that's what I wanted. Oh well, only $5.59 left my pocket and the heartburn is fading a few hours after finishing that fucking sandwich.
