Torrey lives up to the hype, a beautiful, beautiful location and an immaculately manicured golf course.

I've played here at sun up several times, show up around 0600AM and wait for an early tee time.  Teeing off at Torrey with the rising sun at your back is one of the great experiences of golf.

Walking past the salt-pruned Torrey Pines may cause delusions of PGA grandeur so don't get caught up in the moment and go for eagle every time.  That's a sure way to find a 7 on your score card!

There are two courses here; The North and the South.  Both are used in PGA rotations but the South Course is considered the premier course and is typically much longer and harder to play than the North.  That said, getting a tee time at the North course is easier.

I've played both and both have great views of the Pacific; I don't think you will be disappointed with either course.

Fairways and Greens, my friends.... Fairways and Greens....

Waiting for Farmers Insurance Open to start this week. One, so we can watch the pros play. Two, so they can get this over with so we can have the course back. Torrey is the best maintained course in the area, is challenging and fun to play. Wife and I prefer the South course as it is more interesting, tough and draws better players, thus helping maintain the pace of play. North is fun too, but gets a lot of clowns who can't really play, but insist on slicing it off the back tees and the newbies who just want to say they've played Torrey, thus making for some slow play. Personally don't care how good/bad someone plays as long as they keep pace. Fortunately, Torrey does a better than average job of marshalling the course. Glad I'm a resident as its very pricey if you're not. Kudos to the maintenance crews who keep this place in beautiful shape. Would have easily given Torrey five stars, but the all to frequent attitude from the proshop and cart staff lost them a star. Just have to laugh them off on your way to the tee.

Oh yeah...won't miss tigger at the tourney this year. He can't hit a fairway anyway.

We went on vacation to San Diego and got to stay by and visit Torrey Pines Golf Course.  Notice I did not say play at.  I would have loved to except for 3 reasons:  Too expensive for an out of towner.  I did not have my clubs.  I didn't make a reservation for a tee time.  Otherwise, I would have played.

I actually enjoyed just seeing the place.  Sometimes you just want to be thisclose to greatness.

I have had two experiences with this golf course and neither involved actually golfing here so this is a non golfing review for a golf course.  (Tiger you can stop reading now.)

I can see this course from my hotel room with the ocean beyond.  It's breathtaking, it is the second best view I have ever had from a hotel room.  (Niagara Falls is hard to beat.)  So, as a visual addition to the world of beauty it is a total five.

My second experience was just going over there to see this hallowed ground.  To my great surprise, no one chased me off.  They let me take pictures, gaze on the course, use the bathroom and buy Christmas presents for my Dad in the pro shop.

Imagine that, a world class golf course that is accepting and nice to ordinary citizens.  Think of it, where else can just an average person step foot on greatness?

Wall Street, take note.  You don't have to grind the little buy into the dirt, you can treat them with respect and dignity.

Once upon a time, there was a little boy who wanted to be a professional golfer.  He practiced real hard, made the high school golf team, and eventually earned a golf collegiate golf scholarship.  After college, he turned pro and tried to get his tour card.  No matter how hard he tried, he could never make the cut.  Season after season, he tried and failed to get his tour card and with each passing attempt, he became more and more bitter and angry.  With no other prospects for a career in golf, he applied for job at the Torrey Pines Pro Shop.

There, we was relegated to giving snot-nose kids golf lessons.  Between lessons,  he stickering golf visors and cardigan sweaters until his fingers became so callous he couldn't grip a putter.  With each passing day, wondering what might have been, the young man who was once the innocent little boy, grew angrier and angrier.  Snapping rude and sarcastic answers to unsuspecting tourists became his stock in trade.  "You want a tee time when?"

Eventually, enough people complained to management and wrote bad reviews on Yelp that the young man was fired.   He moved into a trailer park in Chula Vista, where he grew older and more bitter, and wondering how things might have been different had he only treated those tourists with a little more dignity.

Hands down best golfing experience I have ever had (in my short golfing career).  Played the south course with my father and brother inlaw.  I had read that the rough can be rough, and let me tell you it is no joke.

The first par 3 hitting towards the ocean from elevation was amazing (especially with the gliders to the left).  I have to admit the thing that impressed me the most was the greens.  The speed on them was so great and the ball rolled thru, it was a joy putting on them.

After our round we went by the pro shop to pick up a little Torrey Pines gear to take home, and I was blown away with how you could get the TP logo on any brand shirt.

One day I'll come back and play the north course.  I am not much of a tv golf watcher but i will be tuning in this winter to see how the pro
    s tackle the course.

So as a super beginner golfer, I can't say that I've actually played Torrey Pines... unless you count the driving range and putting greens.

I took 6 hour long private lessons with Allen Merryman and he was fantastic. I had a corporate golf event coming up and I didn't want to make a fool of myself, so I signed up for lessons. I went from zero to decent in 6 lessons! My colleagues were really impressed and kept mentioning how good I looked out on the course. I ended up having so much fun that I've invested in a set of clubs and plan to continue playing. Torrey also offers pretty affordable group lessons which I would like to try as well, now that I have the basics down.

My plan is to get good enough to play the actual course in the next year :) Definitely, while I'm a San Diego resident! But even for beginners, Torrey Pines is a great place to learn the game.

Happy Bday to me 2010!  Played this course last year and forgot to review it.

Torrey is breath taking to say the least.  Ocean views and (as a golf fan) playing holes that you remember seeing Tiger and the PGA play the US Open on is just incredible.

The course was in great condition and the rough was ROUGH!  The 5 iron punch shots weren't  possible, if you end up in the deep stuff you must DIG shot out with wedge.  Taking your medicine never meant so much to me until playing here.

All in all it was a great time on a great course with great friends.  I'll be back!

This review is really meant for the out-of-towner...

Good - The most beautiful course I've ever played.  Greens are in spectacular shape, fairways are great, and the pro-shop has got to be the best in the country.

Bad - They let any hack on these courses so if you know before teeing off, the easier you'll take it.  Not sure if this is bad, but the rough is seriously rough....and I mean rough.  Try to keep it in the short stuff...even if it means keeping the driver in the bag.

Overall, if you're a golfer and you're in San Diego....go play this course.  Get there super early if you don't have an assigned tee time (like 5:15am).  I golfed on a Tuesday and it was still a 4.5 hour round.  Money should not be hinderance to playing either North or South course.  I can't WAIT to go to play the South course!!!

It's a nice course on the ocean. In good condition with spongy greens. $50 for the north and $70 for the south. That's is for residents. If you're unlucky enough not to live in America's finest city it's $150 and $230 respectively.
The reason I have given it three stars is the staff in the starter box. Not very nice. They rushed us off the 1st tee to catch up with the other two in our group who teed off ahead of us. Most everyone has the first tee jitters. Doesn't help when you have the guy in the starter box yelling at you over the loud speaker to the whole course to hurry up. We weren't even lagging. If we were slacking off I can understand but this wasn't the case.
Play golf here but don't expect good customer service from the staff.

Beautiful views overlooking the ocean.  REALLY wish I was a San Diego resident.  I think the fee they pay is about what the course is worth.  However, the $180 greens fees are a bit steap, but minor compared to other pro course like Bay Hill, Pebble, Pinehurst, etc.

We had a great day except for the last three holes-a storm rolled off the ocean and nearly knocked us over with wind and rain.

Can be extremely difficult to get a tee time.  You can call 90 days in advance and pay a $45 advanced booking fee to assure yourself a tee time.  If you wait much past 60-70 days before your trip you will have some issues getting a time.

What a gem in our own back yard.  Torrey Pines is one of the premier golf courses in America and if you're a San Diego resident, you can get on it for next to nothing, relatively speaking.

I've played the South twice and the North once.  Believe me, I have no right in playing the South as it is loooooonnnnngggg.  Still, after all the torture the course put me through, the South is still my favorite.

Ocean breezes and views will definitely throw off your game here.  You can find yourself getting caught up in the views and completely forget about your game.  I think I have the attention span of a gnat.

One of the things I do like about this layout is the many of the doglegs are to the right meaning it suits my slice just fine.  The carries to the fairway are long and the greens are well guarded so your approach shots better be spot on as well.

In my opinion, there isn't a better muni out there.

If you're a city of San Diego resident, then there really isnt a better value in the county.  If you want to play twilite, then signups usually start around noon so you can get there during your lunch break and put your name down on the list and come back later to play. and if you arent there when your name is called, not to worry, theyll keep your name active.

Walking on in the early morning for a back 9 on the north is usually fairly easy to do and a great way to get in 9 before work.  In cases where you want to walk on, make sure you check the monthly calendar to make sure a tournament isn't already going on.  Here's the link:

Another great way to play is to join the mens club.  They have a Thursday and Saturday group.  Sign up details here:

Alright.  PGA Championships, US Opens, Jr Worlds, etc etc.  Do you honestly need a review?

one of the best and challenging courses you can play on.. yet people of all levels of golf can enjoy this spot.  seriously, i forget the tee but teeing off on a cliff overlooking the ocean... you can't beat that!

the driving range just got more bonus pts from me for finally giving discounts for buying multiple bucket packages liek other driving ranges.  about time! the practice balls are just the standard range balls and thye seem to swap out new ones every so often so thats a plus. sometimes u can even hit off the grass!! and they have a nice little area to practice chipping which not a lot of places have.

if your an SD resident, dont forget your resident card to get discounts on tee times!

This is one of the best values of anything in San Diego, especially golf courses! If you are a San Diego city resident, the greens fees are much lower than 'non residents'. You can potentially play this PGA US Open course for under $40 bucks if you don't mind playing 'twilight' hours later in the afternoon. The course is challenging as the South course is very long and both North and South have the constant ocean breeze which makes for difficult shots into the wind.

The views are remarkable and on some holes you look down into the ocean and even have paragliders hovering above you. The greens have huge undulations and are tough for even the best putters out there. I highly recommend Torrey Pines the golf course if you like to play beautiful courses and save some green. The starters are nice and very accommodating with helping you find a tee-time if you're a single.

The reason for 4 stars versus 5 is because #1 it's always slow play here. Since it's such a popular course, and a municipal course, there is all sorts of people on here from hackers to pros. I've been paired with many players here who have no golf etiquette and don't understand common sense of not walking in your line on the green, not taking 4 practice swings, and being ready for your next shot and keeping up with the group in front of you. I haven't played a round under 4.5 hours yet. Also, some of the guys working here in the pro shop are a bit 'stuffy' for my liking and the kids in the cart room peel out and talk while you tee off on the first hole lol. Other than that, this place is dynamite!

My review is with regard to the Farmers Insurance Open 2011.

Had a great time. The organization and staff here are excellent. Really well managed. 5 stars for that.

Clearly there is pressure for parking and traffic, shipping in people from Del Mar and handling all that which is difficult.
My question to the information desk was "Where is the shuttle to the train station?". The reply......"What train station?"....

I spoke to plenty of people from areas that could connect to Sorrento Valley by train. Why make these people, and me, drive when less than a mile away (admittedly, as the crow flys) there is a train station that connects to downtown, and to Oceanside and beyond. Make use of that, everyone wins.

Wow. Just wow. Torrey Pines has got to be the best municipal golf course around.

The driving range isn't as nice as the course itself, but it still a nice place to practice your swing. There is also a sand trap to practice with your sand wedge. Balls are $8 for a medium basket, $10 for a large.

The putting greens to the side of The Lodge are so well maintained. It felt like butter-- the grass was so smooth. Torrey is so fantastic that I am seriously considering taking golf lessons. And this is coming from a person that used to believe golf was not a sport. So if Torrey can change my mind, you must come and check it out yourself!

Congratulations. You have hit the big time.  Home to the Buick Invitational, the renowned TP rests on the cliffs for sweeping views of the coast.  Choose between the North or South course (both scenic, I'll assume, but haven't played on the South), and take in golf grandness at its best.  Even a couple extra strokes here can't ruffle my feathers in paradise. Hmm, must be why the pro shop staff is super nice.

South Course *US Open Course in 2008*
    $185.00 pp (M-F)
    $205.00 pp (Sa-Su)

    North Course
    $140.00 pp (M-F)
    $150.00 pp (Sa-Su)

I know, I know giving a US Open course (South Course review ONLY) 3-stars seems sacreligious.  But I have to admit after all the hype and all the great expectations, finally getting to play Torrey South was good but not great.

There are some amazing holes.  Namely holes 3-4 and 12-16.  The Par-5 13th is just an amazing golf hole.  But a lot of the other holes are rather ordinary.  I'm not saying they are easy, the rough is very penal (as it should be on a championship course) but they did not have as much character as I was expecting.

I don't want people to think I am knocking Torrey Pines.  To be able to walk the same grounds where Tiger pulled off the most exciting major possibly in history, and to be able to play a world-class golf course for a reasonable rate, is just awesome.  Even out of state it was only $160 which is a STEAL compared with the Pebble Beaches and Pinehursts of the country.

I guess ultimately I found the course lacking that extra something to put it over the top.  I will also admit that I think the Black Course at Bethpage State Park on Long Island (site of the 2009 US Open) is the best public course in the USA (though I haven't played any of the Bandon Dunes courses in Oregon).  Same general setup, truly public daily-fee course.

Now that I have played Torrey, Bethpage and Pebble...I have to say Bethpage is by far the best.  Pebble has the best views, followed closely by Torrey, but Bethpage is the best golf course that will test every part of your game.

While they are lovely and excellent courses, you can get a cheaper challenge at Balboa Park, as a lot of their fairways are not as forgiving as Torrey's are.

Unless you get in the rough, then no other courses can match Torrey Pines.

Torrey Pines is the "Mother Ship" for golf in San Diego.  World famous, it is one of the few public courses that hosts PGA tournaments. The Buick Open is played here every year in January.   Beautiful scenery with the mesh of lush fairways and greens with the Pacific Ocean. Take a look at the setting:

    http://www.caddybytes....

Well manicured.  Great pro shop.  Has driving range and lessons for all players.  I feel honored to walk and play this course.  It is the "deal of the century" concerning green fees for San Diego county residents. You all can play it for less than $50.  Us out of towners pay more, which I am glad to.  On number 6, I imagine me with the perfect stroke, as the ball flies heading out to the ocean, but yet dropping softly onto the narrow green.

If you are a golfer, and you go to San Diego, then Torrey Pines is a must go, must see, and must play!

I have been here so many times with my younger cousins when they came to the states for when the Junior World golf tournaments were taking place here at the golf course.

All the times that I have been here have been so amazing. All of the staff are super friendly and nice. Even though I've been watching all the people be totally rude and trash the place and just be mean to the people, the staff still puts up a warming smile on their face. So I totally give mad mad mad props to the staff for being awesome.

I came here today to check out the US Open stuff and they were just so amazing on what they have done with the course. just the way that they cleaned up and make everything look so eff-ing spiffy!!!! The only thing that was super sad for me was that we had to park on the south park of the golf course since parking was totally full on the driving range!!!! The US Open is going to be huge this year so totally come and check it out!!!!!

Torrey Pines is a gem on the when it comes to West Coast Golf.

Two courses: North and South.   North is the shorter of the two but the scenery is just as dramatic as the South.  South plays tough because of the length.  Fairways feel narrow because of the distance.  Fairways are growing super thick because Torrey Pines South Course will host the 2008 US Open.  Accuracy is key to shooting par or bogey golf.  You will lose balls in the rough if you miss the fairway.

The course plays like a muni, because it is.  Greens typically are firm and relatively fast.

Hosts the PGA Tour stop Buick Invitational every January / February.

Costs are expensive for a non-resident.  Worth it for the experience.
Try ebay to find guaranteed tee times.
Walk ons expect a minumum 2 hour wait if you have the patience.  The La Jolla Hilton does not offer an advantage to getting a tee time.

Local tip: this is one of the west coast courses where grain plays a factor.  Kind of.  Everything breaks toward the ocean.

Torrey Pines is a gem.  Thankfully the rates are exorbitant for non-San Diegans.

The south course is HARD.  The north course is just as beautiful, has the same views of Black's Beach, the cliffs, the hang gliders, the same trees, canyons, etc, and for me is more fun since I can reach greens in regulation there.

Getting a tee time requires calling in advance with the automated system, kind of a hassle, but worthwhile.

This is also a fun place to watch a golf tournament, the Buick being a fun spot to watch players tear up the North and struggle on the South.

I wanna give this course 5 stars but the scum bag working the pro shop left a bad impression of the experience. This golf course is truly a gem in San Diego. Are foursome played the North course since this was our first time playing here. I sort of felt like a tourist because i wanted to take pictures all over the place, but i fought the urge not to look like a newb. This is such a scenic golf course that you feel like your getting a bargain deal if you are a resident of San Diego. By far the par three 6th hole is my favorite. I will agree with the other reviews that hitting the ball out of the rough is a bone breaking experience. Me trying to be professional and wack it far was a big mistake. I will now pitch the ball back towards the fairway because the rough will not give.

I'm really giving this course 4.5 stars because everybody else who worked here was very professional and courteous. I liked Torrey so much that I booked a tee time for South next week. I know I'm in for a tough round but this is golf's mecca for San Diego.

    TORREY PINES!  AWESOME!

When I was a grad student in San Diego, out of all the fun stuff I did there like watching Japan beat Korea in the World Baseball Classic, or going to the beach, I would definitely put playing Torrey Pines, both the North and South Course, as one of my best experiences in SD.

The course is gorgeous, and looks like a country club, which is surprising since its a muni.  But you roll up to the course, and the lot is wooded, and one of the first buildings you see is the Lodge, which is this high end inn.  The putting green has flags flying all over the place, and seems so regal.  Just standing in that area makes you feel like you are playing a nice course.

The South course is definitely the most difficult of the two.  I bought a lob wedge the day before, and it was a worthwhile investment.  If you miss the green on the wrong side of the pin, with the size of the rough and the size of bunkers, you have no other choice but to loft it high and land it soft.  Bunkers are deep too, and my inexperienced friend struggled to get out of some of them.

Length is not a problem if you play from the whites, but if you play championship, it can be stretched pretty long.  I remember standing on the white toes and looking back at the blues and blacks, and thinking, wow thats' another wedge to the blues and a 9-iron to blacks.  I can see it get real exhausting playing from back there.

As fore (golf pun) aesthetics, course is pretty with the various trees and water hazards and the occasional ocean view to the right.  Heck, now that I think about it, the views are really quite comparable to Pebble.

    Southern California Mecca!  A must-play.

Got to watch the first round of the 2008 US Open and the course was perfect. Got to see champion Tiger Woods, contenders Rocco, Phil and everyone else. But I've been in love with this course long before the USGA chose the South to host the open.

People ask me why is Torrey Pines South so great. Well, it's the peoples' course. Roll your eyes as I say that but it's city owned course paid by the people. In NY it's Bethpage, at home in LA it's Rancho Park...but for Southern California, playing Torrey is a pilgrimage for all.

The 4th and 12th holes here on the South make me feel like an absolute novice. And oh yeah, the North course is pretty awesome too!!

The course plays next to the ocean, with a constant ocean and probably having 367 days of perfect sunshine. This is the quintessential Southern California course. It's difficult, it's beautiful and it has so much history. Not tour history but people learn to play the game here.

The course is still moderately priced and it's hard to get a walkon sometimes but it's a course you can play if you feel like it.

Okay.....this is different for me.   I played hookey from work to go to the US Open playoff round on Monday at Torrey Pines Golf Course...and TIGER WINS...it was a once in a lifetime experience!!

The golf course at Torrey Pines represented San Diego well in hosting the 2008 US Open.  I managed to make three days of the wonderful event and Torrey Pines GC will go down in history as one of the best places for golf.  I have been lucky enough to play the North Course once in my life and the South Course a handful of times.  Because it is a municipal course, the weekend golfer like myself can afford to play a PGA rated golf course, albiet $140+ for twilight golf.  I digress once again....I want to golf there again, but on a tight budget this is the closest PGA event type golf course available that is public and not a private course for us regular people to play at.  Good Job Torry Pines!

The south course is a challenging and pretty straight forward course.  Its extremely long, and difficult to get on in regulation.  For San Diego residents, this course is a great deal for 45 dollars.  Conditions this past weekend were okay... the greens were in good shape, fairways were on the longer side with lots of yellow grass, and the rough was fair... though there were areas of open dirt...

For an out of towner like myself... this course is quite expensive, especially for what you get.  $165 greens, $30 for a cart, $35 per person for an advanced tee time.

For this price, I'd expect a lot more amenities and services.  Pre-round warm-up was tough, as the driving range is pretty far from the tee, as well as the putting green.  Also, getting some food was difficult as the restaurant really isn't designed well for golfers.

It is cool though that the '08 US Open will be here.

One of the prettiest community courses you will ever find. Ocean views are breathtaking and the course provides enough challenges to alter what you might believe your handicap to be.

The only downside is that this is a public course.

    South Course:

What an amazing layout of a course! This place is everything I'd hoped it would be and what I heard about. The rough is the signature part of this course, more so than those Torrey Pines or the ocean. If you hit in it, try to see exactly where it lands. I lost 2 in it, but found 5 looking for mine. Hard to get out of with anything above a 5 iron. No Marshall around the whole day. Pace was decent. Only waited on a few holes for a couple of minutes. Grandstands are up on the 18th hole, and a big tent is on the side of 16, which I hit on top of. Fairways were great. Tee boxes can use some work right now. Sand is good in some areas, but hard packed in other, probably because of the rain. Very enjoyable course that every golfer should try at least once.

    North Course
Played the twilight after a full 18 on the South Course. North isn't as good of condition currently as the south. 1st hole has about 80 yards of fairway under ropes for reseeding, and some other holes have some ropes. Layout was amazing, especially the long drop par 3 hole, number 6. Rough is extremely tough to get out of, and I was never really successful in it with anything above a 5 iron. Sand was hard packed on some holes, most likely from the rain. They are probably prepping for the Buick Invitational, so that may be why some parts are under renovation. Might want to wait until after the Buick for this one, play the South in the meantime.

Don't play here a month (or sooner) before a sponsored event (in this case the Buick Invitational)...

    1. You can't drive the carts onto the fairway.
    2. They don't cut the rough, which can grow up to 1 foot the week before the event. Be prepared to lose a ball everytime you don't hit the fairway.
    3. They don't keep up the greens as well as they normally do.

Other than that, enjoy the tough course, the tradition, the large pro-shop, the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, and the jealous orange ducks that attack you b/c you're playing on their property.

I went here to watch the Buick. They played the tournament on the South Course. But Wow is all I can say.  This is an amazing golf course with well maintained fairways, bunkers and greens.

That isn't all, the views of the ocean are spectacular. I will definitely come here to golf in the near future.

It also looks like a very difficult course, so I will get a lot of golf balls and practice a little more before I come out here.

They ran a great tournament in the Buick Invitational and I really enjoyed myself.

About a month after the Buick, I had the opportunity to play here.  It is a well maintained course with spectacular ocean views and it is a very very difficult course.  The roughs are actually rough and the fairways are very narrow.  I spent a lot of time in the rough and had some trouble in the beginning.  But for resident price I would definitely come here again.

Really beautiful. It's a super challenging course so beware! You will lose your balls! ;)

The one complaint is that the wait to walk on during the discounted twilight hours was forever and a day. The told us it would be a 1 hour wait but it was at least 1 1/2 hours and we got there 10 minutes after the time you could start signing up for walk-ons (1 pm). As a result, we ended up having to quit our round a few holes early because it got dark. So, if you go, get there at 12:45 and try to be one of the first to sign up.

Bring a layer or two--it gets chilly as the sun goes down!

I worked here years and years ago and it's still one of my faves.  Prior to the the renovations on both the North and South courses, both were pretty bland.  After the renovations though, they can be long and HARD, more so the South though.

I played on both courses on Mondays after the Buick Invitational and got my ass royally handed to me (I usually play to an 8 handicap).  Rees Jones (the US Open Doctor) seamlessly redone holes to take advantage of TP (South) natural terrain and views.

If you have a chance, the best time to play is in the late summer as the sun is setting.  You want to be on holes 3 or 4 on the South or holes 6/7 on the North.

Torrey South or Torrey North, this place is why I love being a San Diego resident. Get your City Golf Card and come here often. South is the tougher course and will be the main feature at the U.S. Open this year.

There are very few courses that are enjoyable to walk, but this is definitely one of them to walk on. Absolutely beautiful course, beautiful view and probably the origins of the saying, "A bad day of golf beats a good day of work."

Whenever friends or family come to town, this is where they want to play. It is the absolute best course in Southern California!

Solid, Solid, Solid. But you get whacked as a non local. Its old school like bethpage where the starter is the man you have to deal with. Its a solid layout and the South Course is fun to play and some very awesome holes but there are some very lame holes that lack any character.

It is the best course in the area and would definitely play again but not for the full rate.
