I played the North Course here today.

Although lacking the status of the world renowned South, it was actually a bit more enjoyable.  The South is a bit too tough with #'s 4, 7, 12 and a few others  which are monsters that I can't hang with.  The North doesn't really have any real tough holes, although #5 is real long.  Most golfers will probably score better on the North.

The rates have gone up.  I only play twilight Monday thru Thursday so those are the only prices I know.  The rates for residents are currently $23 for the North and $35 for the South.  For non-resident, I think it's around $55 for the North and $104 for the South.  Again, this is M-Th twilight only.

Still one of the best deals in the nation for residents, admittedly a bit pricy for non-residents.  Right now twilight starts at 1:30.  We got out around 2:15 and had no problem finishing.

I agree with Stephen R. that I would not pay full price, but with SD resident card, it's an easy 5 stars.

I wanna give this course 5 stars but the scum bag working the pro shop left a bad impression of the experience. This golf course is truly a gem in San Diego. Are foursome played the North course since this was our first time playing here. I sort of felt like a tourist because i wanted to take pictures all over the place, but i fought the urge not to look like a newb. This is such a scenic golf course that you feel like your getting a bargain deal if you are a resident of San Diego. By far the par three 6th hole is my favorite. I will agree with the other reviews that hitting the ball out of the rough is a bone breaking experience. Me trying to be professional and wack it far was a big mistake. I will now pitch the ball back towards the fairway because the rough will not give.

I'm really giving this course 4.5 stars because everybody else who worked here was very professional and courteous. I liked Torrey so much that I booked a tee time for South next week. I know I'm in for a tough round but this is golf's mecca for San Diego.

Solid, Solid, Solid. But you get whacked as a non local. Its old school like bethpage where the starter is the man you have to deal with. Its a solid layout and the South Course is fun to play and some very awesome holes but there are some very lame holes that lack any character.

It is the best course in the area and would definitely play again but not for the full rate.

I can't say that I love golf that much. But i can say that this golf course is beautiful! And it definitely helps that it's just down the street. This is the famous course that Tiger Woods comes to play at and they hold the US Open here every few years. If it's good enough for the likes of hem, it's good enough for me.  My X used to take me here all the time. I was more of an accessory for him on the course than anything, but it was lots of fun. Much better than the courses he took me to down in Miramar.
BTW, beautiful view and really nice grass. :-)

I played the North course today. It has come back well from the over seeding. It is in phenomenal shape. The fog rolled in at about 12:30. By 1:30, you could not see 100 feet! Imagine flying in from back east to play the storied South course on a perfect weather San Diego day, pay $200 and can't even see the course or the ocean! That would royally suck!

I know, I know giving a US Open course (South Course review ONLY) 3-stars seems sacreligious.  But I have to admit after all the hype and all the great expectations, finally getting to play Torrey South was good but not great.

There are some amazing holes.  Namely holes 3-4 and 12-16.  The Par-5 13th is just an amazing golf hole.  But a lot of the other holes are rather ordinary.  I'm not saying they are easy, the rough is very penal (as it should be on a championship course) but they did not have as much character as I was expecting.

I don't want people to think I am knocking Torrey Pines.  To be able to walk the same grounds where Tiger pulled off the most exciting major possibly in history, and to be able to play a world-class golf course for a reasonable rate, is just awesome.  Even out of state it was only $160 which is a STEAL compared with the Pebble Beaches and Pinehursts of the country.

I guess ultimately I found the course lacking that extra something to put it over the top.  I will also admit that I think the Black Course at Bethpage State Park on Long Island (site of the 2009 US Open) is the best public course in the USA (though I haven't played any of the Bandon Dunes courses in Oregon).  Same general setup, truly public daily-fee course.

Now that I have played Torrey, Bethpage and Pebble...I have to say Bethpage is by far the best.  Pebble has the best views, followed closely by Torrey, but Bethpage is the best golf course that will test every part of your game.

South Course:

What an amazing layout of a course! This place is everything I'd hoped it would be and what I heard about. The rough is the signature part of this course, more so than those Torrey Pines or the ocean. If you hit in it, try to see exactly where it lands. I lost 2 in it, but found 5 looking for mine. Hard to get out of with anything above a 5 iron. No Marshall around the whole day. Pace was decent. Only waited on a few holes for a couple of minutes. Grandstands are up on the 18th hole, and a big tent is on the side of 16, which I hit on top of. Fairways were great. Tee boxes can use some work right now. Sand is good in some areas, but hard packed in other, probably because of the rain. Very enjoyable course that every golfer should try at least once.

North Course
Played the twilight after a full 18 on the South Course. North isn't as good of condition currently as the south. 1st hole has about 80 yards of fairway under ropes for reseeding, and some other holes have some ropes. Layout was amazing, especially the long drop par 3 hole, number 6. Rough is extremely tough to get out of, and I was never really successful in it with anything above a 5 iron. Sand was hard packed on some holes, most likely from the rain. They are probably prepping for the Buick Invitational, so that may be why some parts are under renovation. Might want to wait until after the Buick for this one, play the South in the meantime.

Don't play here a month (or sooner) before a sponsored event (in this case the Buick Invitational)...

1. You can't drive the carts onto the fairway.
2. They don't cut the rough, which can grow up to 1 foot the week before the event. Be prepared to lose a ball everytime you don't hit the fairway.
3. They don't keep up the greens as well as they normally do.

Other than that, enjoy the tough course, the tradition, the large pro-shop, the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, and the jealous orange ducks that attack you b/c you're playing on their property.

One of the prettiest community courses you will ever find. Ocean views are breathtaking and the course provides enough challenges to alter what you might believe your handicap to be.

The only downside is that this is a public course.

So this review is not for the course per say but for an event held here. I am reviewing the Buick Invitational held at Torrey Pines Golf Course. I went today and will be going back this weekend thanks to a hook up from a friend of mine that is golfing in the tournament. Initially I was not impressed with the customer service, hence the deduction of a star.

I got to the event with a friend of mine and we picked up our tickets from will call. After trying to go into the event we were sent over to a tent to change out the tickets for wrist bands. We came back with wrist bands and then were told we would need to check our cell phones back at the same tent. Ummm wouldn't that have been a good idea to mention initially. They really needed signage at the entrance that said please check all cell phones and large purses or bags instead of making people go back and forth. Also the attendant at the gate once again asked us if we had phones after we came back but he was so loud that the people holding the quiet signs had to ask for silence. Maybe the gate should be pushed out a little so that it isn't located right next to a hole. OK those are my complaints. The rest was fabulous! Fabulous course, fabulous views and all the marshals and others working the event were friendly, courteous and helpful. They had a nice amount of seating at the end of the south course 18th hole and on some other major holes. There were plenty of restrooms placed through out the course along with food and drinks available near the clubhouse. One highlight you will not see on the news tonight was Stuart Appleby peeing behind a tree on the course today. It was hilarious to see him peek his head out from behind the tree to see if anyone noticed. Luckily he wasn't with Mickelson or he couldn't have pulled that off with out it making it on the news.

I have been here so many times with my younger cousins when they came to the states for when the Junior World golf tournaments were taking place here at the golf course.

All the times that I have been here have been so amazing. All of the staff are super friendly and nice. Even though I've been watching all the people be totally rude and trash the place and just be mean to the people, the staff still puts up a warming smile on their face. So I totally give mad mad mad props to the staff for being awesome.

I came here today to check out the US Open stuff and they were just so amazing on what they have done with the course. just the way that they cleaned up and make everything look so eff-ing spiffy!!!! The only thing that was super sad for me was that we had to park on the south park of the golf course since parking was totally full on the driving range!!!! The US Open is going to be huge this year so totally come and check it out!!!!!

Got to watch the first round of the 2008 US Open and the course was perfect. Got to see champion Tiger Woods, contenders Rocco, Phil and everyone else. But I've been in love with this course long before the USGA chose the South to host the open.

People ask me why is Torrey Pines South so great. Well, it's the peoples' course. Roll your eyes as I say that but it's city owned course paid by the people. In NY it's Bethpage, at home in LA it's Rancho Park...but for Southern California, playing Torrey is a pilgrimage for all.

The 4th and 12th holes here on the South make me feel like an absolute novice. And oh yeah, the North course is pretty awesome too!!

The course plays next to the ocean, with a constant ocean and probably having 367 days of perfect sunshine. This is the quintessential Southern California course. It's difficult, it's beautiful and it has so much history. Not tour history but people learn to play the game here.

The course is still moderately priced and it's hard to get a walkon sometimes but it's a course you can play if you feel like it.

Okay.....this is different for me.   I played hookey from work to go to the US Open playoff round on Monday at Torrey Pines Golf Course...and TIGER WINS...it was a once in a lifetime experience!!

The golf course at Torrey Pines represented San Diego well in hosting the 2008 US Open.  I managed to make three days of the wonderful event and Torrey Pines GC will go down in history as one of the best places for golf.  I have been lucky enough to play the North Course once in my life and the South Course a handful of times.  Because it is a municipal course, the weekend golfer like myself can afford to play a PGA rated golf course, albiet $140+ for twilight golf.  I digress once again....I want to golf there again, but on a tight budget this is the closest PGA event type golf course available that is public and not a private course for us regular people to play at.  Good Job Torry Pines!

The girlfriend got me a tee time for my birthday so I played the South Course a couple weeks ago.  First bit of advice: If you want to play Torrey Pines, you have to make reservations three months in advance.  And if you're not a San Diego resident be prepared to shell out $200 for a round.  SD residents pay only a paltry $47.

For $47 this is the best deal on earth!  For that price where else can you play a course that's PGA caliber, has fantastic ocean views, and is where on one leg Tiger showed he's still greatest golfer on the planet.
Makes me wish I was an SD resident.

The course itself along w/ the views of the Pacific is beautiful.  If you can hit it reasonably straight it's not terribly difficult, though the rough is brutal.  The grass is sticky and is so long at some parts it's impossible to find your ball.  Annoyed me that I lost a couple balls on the fringe because the grass was so long.  The grass was parched at a few places, which was disappointing, but overall it's a fun course.

There are several elevated greens that also border the canyon/cliff, so it's real target golf.

The facilities are first class and the staff is super friendly.  Unlike most courses, they let my girlfriend to walk the course w/o paying a green fee, even though she wasn't playing.

This course is the BOMB, and especially for its price.  It's soooo pretty, set on the edge of a cliff, with big torrey pines trees, hence the name.  The condition of the course is pretty good, considering that it's a public course and gets a lot of play.  Both North and South are really fun to play.  North is noticeably easier, with wider fairways and fairly straight hole layouts.  However, North is much longer.  South on the other hand, is a bit shorter, but not much, and is much narrower with trickier fairways.  The fairways are narrow, and the rough is BRUTAL.  I went there 2 weeks after the Buick (they were still taking down the 18th hole gallery stands), and I couldn't hack my ball out of the rough.  However, the view on #3 on South is a real treat, even though the hole itself is extremely intimidating.  In any case, either course is really fun to play.  Don't forget that there is an ocean break!

The best part is the Resident rates!  I played twilight on North for $27.  Normal weekday rates are about $45, which is totally worth the type of course you get to play on.  Definitely a real gem of San Diego and for golfers.

Torrey Pines is the "Mother Ship" for golf in San Diego.  World famous, it is one of the few public courses that hosts PGA tournaments. The Buick Open is played here every year in January.   Beautiful scenery with the mesh of lush fairways and greens with the Pacific Ocean. Take a look at the setting:

http://www.caddybytes....

Well manicured.  Great pro shop.  Has driving range and lessons for all players.  I feel honored to walk and play this course.  It is the "deal of the century" concerning green fees for San Diego county residents. You all can play it for less than $50.  Us out of towners pay more, which I am glad to.  On number 6, I imagine me with the perfect stroke, as the ball flies heading out to the ocean, but yet dropping softly onto the narrow green.

If you are a golfer, and you go to San Diego, then Torrey Pines is a must go, must see, and must play!

We already know that Torrey Pines is a fine golf course and perhaps the best municipal golf course in the country, with some of the best views in the world; and with a resident ID card you can play the North Course for under $30 and the South Course for under $40 (both w/o carts).

But I wanted to review the US Open that was here last June.  Probably one of the most memorable golf tournaments in the history of modern golf with Tiger battling his knee and stress fracture and fan favorite Rocco Mediate storming from nowhere to take Tiger 91 holes until the champion was crowned.

Gotta give it up to the USGA, I have never been a fan of the golf governing body, but this was my first "major" tournament and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to attend a corporate sponsored tournament again (ala Buick Open, Phoenix Open excluded).  Where the corporate events require upgrade tickets, the US Open tickets were all the same.  Which means, if you were there you had access to the whole golf course.

Every grandstand, every tee box, every green, every beer tent, every bathroom area, every food stand, every corporate tent, was open to each and every ticket holder.  Now, tickets started at $100, but to see an event like this it was worth it alone - then to find out the entire golf course is open to every patron made it more the memorable.

I got to personally witness Tiger's putts on 18 both Saturday and Sunday from the grandstand on 18 green about 5 rows up, you cannot beat that.

Additionally, the merchandise tent was insane.  It was literally the size of a Best Buy and you could purchase just about anything with that really sweet Torrey Pines US Open logo on it.

Hats off the USGA.

Torrey Pines is a gem on the when it comes to West Coast Golf.

Two courses: North and South.   North is the shorter of the two but the scenery is just as dramatic as the South.  South plays tough because of the length.  Fairways feel narrow because of the distance.  Fairways are growing super thick because Torrey Pines South Course will host the 2008 US Open.  Accuracy is key to shooting par or bogey golf.  You will lose balls in the rough if you miss the fairway.

The course plays like a muni, because it is.  Greens typically are firm and relatively fast.

Hosts the PGA Tour stop Buick Invitational every January / February.

Costs are expensive for a non-resident.  Worth it for the experience.
Try ebay to find guaranteed tee times.
Walk ons expect a minumum 2 hour wait if you have the patience.  The La Jolla Hilton does not offer an advantage to getting a tee time.

Local tip: this is one of the west coast courses where grain plays a factor.  Kind of.  Everything breaks toward the ocean.

Torrey South or Torrey North, this place is why I love being a San Diego resident. Get your City Golf Card and come here often. South is the tougher course and will be the main feature at the U.S. Open this year.

There are very few courses that are enjoyable to walk, but this is definitely one of them to walk on. Absolutely beautiful course, beautiful view and probably the origins of the saying, "A bad day of golf beats a good day of work."

Whenever friends or family come to town, this is where they want to play. It is the absolute best course in Southern California!

Only reason I'm not giving Torrey Pines 4 stars is because of the difficulty of getting on the course, but it in a way it adds to the allure.  Luckily I'm a lonely single golfer who has no golfer friends and I am generally golfing alone, so getting on is generally not impossible.  On weekdays I can generally arrive from 5-6 and get on pretty easily before the scheduled tee times start.  Just get in line and keep your ears open for a group needing a single.  If you notice a 3some towards the front of the line be aggressive and glom on!  It will save you time and maybe you will make a new friend.  If you want to go out with a group of people (if you're one of those lucky golfers who has friends) one member of your group will probably have to get there even earlier and get a bag in line.  Weekends are much tougher.  i have not been since the US Open, so I am not sure if things have changed or if it has become more difficult to get on.  But I generally had an easier time getting on the South Course because a lot of the early birds are older dudes who would rather play the easier North Course.

Alright, as for the courses, they are both excellent.  The South Course is ridiculously hard from the deep tees, especially at 630 AM with soaking wet fairways and rough.  But the layout is awesome and on a clear day the views rival anywhere.  The North Course is great too.  A lot easier but still a solid layout and a lot of fun.

You can't expect incredible conditions as it is a public golf course and gets a ton of play, so don't expect resort conditions for the resort price you'll be paying (if you are not a city resident).
