Dearest Torico's, please open again soon!
Your windows are shuttered, I'm starting to swoon.
Nowhere in Jersey City can we get handcrafted ice cream
That tastes good as yours, and we're going to scream
if you
Don't give us some chocolate, or guava, sour sop?
Your avocado ice cream was the first kind I noshed.
No jackfruit, no pumpkin, no butter pecan?
We're surviving on vanilla from bodegas again!
Torico's, Torico's. You trump Tasti-D,
and when you finally reopen, we'll be cool as can be.
In cone or in cup, the choices are clear.
I hope you re-open by the end of the year.Listed in: Cold as Ice

I woke up recently in my 104 degree apartment and realized there was something missing from my life. No, not love. No, not a fully functioning air conditioning unit.
Cherry. Italian. ICE.
You see, Torico's got me through some pretty rough times not too long ago with their delicious creations. Their handmade ice cream saw me through a summer of bad choices, from lousy jobs to even worse dating blunders. At the end of the day, I knew a quart of cherry Italian ice from Torico's could soothe the pain of another ridiculous day.
Toricos's, you fill my heart hole AND my mouth hole. Please come back. I miss you, like the deserts miss the rain.... -

Review from Atif I.
Did you know that 92% of the milk produced in the country goes waste?!
Yes, cows in Wisconsin are unable to achieve self-actualization because of poor planning and resource allocation. No, I am not talking about the millions of gallons of milk wasted in the production of Pinkberry, but the fact that apparently only 8% of milk produced in the U.S. goes towards making ice cream. It's an outrage, I tell you!! :)
They say in New York, you're at best a 90 minute subway ride away from any place in the world that you want to visit.
Well, when the weather hits 90 degrees and you feel like being transported into a land where polar bears wear sweaters around you take that subway ride to have possibly the best ice cream in the city - which ironically turns out to be in Jersey City. I kid you not.
"Everything is delicious": Todo Rico. A contraction of that would lead to the name of the ice cream parlor, Torico, which boasts a storied past spanning some 40 odd years.
Catering to the Asian, Filipino, and Spanish speaking community they have flavors that interest everyone from Green tea, Litchi, Ube, Dulce de leche to your standard Butter Pecan, Rocky Road, Chocolate Peanut Butter, etc. Amongst the more unusual flavors are Jackfruit, Avocado and Sour Sop, and for the season: Pumpkin. On top of the 48 flavors for homemade ice cream are 24 flavors for soft serve (take that BGICT), 10 for Italian ices / Sherbets / Sorbets (take that Blue Marble), made from high quality ingredients with no powdered mixes (take that Pinkberry) so they don't have to retire flavors or keep changing their names (take that Tasteless d-lite).
I discovered Torico's by accident 6 years ago, wandering around the back alleys of Jersey City. It was a warm Fourth of July and I and a few friends decided to explore the neighborhood before the fireworks. I was impressed with the organization and planning in the old fashioned ice cream shop isolating the tribe of nutty Pistachios from the elitist family of chocolate, or the cheerful cherries from their more vanilla cousins. Having the entire cast of characters under one roof is something that you can only expect in one city - except that this is Jersey City. At least we can all agree that the views are better here. -
Review from Rachel A.
I have a love / hate relationship with New Jersey. Love that it only takes me half an hour to get home from work, hate that on a day with a PATH power outage it takes me two. Since there was limited service on the PATH train, I had to get off at the Grove stop. Grove is where I grew up and only a few minutes from where I live now. I took advantage of the situation to reminisce about the old neighborhood and I channeled the navigational system of Rod and Atif. Yes, we are on a first name basis now but only because they are of a select few willing to set foot in JC, and they find it crazy that I have never been to Torico's Homemade Ice Cream Parlor before. So I finally visited and am pleased to report that I love it.
Torico's is a true neighborhood ice cream parlor. It's not fancy and it looks like it hasn't been remodeled or updated since it's very first day of business. The signs are old along with the furniture but the clientele is a mixture of all ages. Torico's is filled with screaming jumpy children all very excited for ice cream. They are accompanied by their mothers, grandparents, siblings, etc. There are couples, single folk, all sorts. Torico's is an ice cream parlor that all generations enjoy. There are no tubs in the glass cases. Instead there are tiny boxes of ice cream. Torico's has more flavors than you can imagine and they are all of what you can predict including Asian flavors like Lychee and Ube as well as seasonal (Pumpkin) and softserve (24 flavors including German Chocolate). This is the first time I have ever seen Pumpkin available and it wasn't October.
I had a difficult time choosing but decided to go for different. I got a scoop of cinnamon and a scoop of cherry vanilla. The ice cream is very soft and creamy and just as I like it, not too sweet. The cinnamon tasted like a cinnamon stick swizzled in my cup. So good. The cherry vanilla was perfect. The cherries weren't sour and they blended well into the vanilla. I was happy because I was pining for the vanilla bean flavor but wanted something with a little more zest.
I took my ice cream and proceeded home. Love that I walked by a little Philippine plaza, hate that some parts made me feel like I was gonna get jumped. Love ending up in my large apartment, still hate the snobbery of the building. It's bittersweet my impending leave of NJ.
I love that I finally got to meet Torico. Thank you, Torico, for keeping it real. Love the ice cream, love the flavor, hate that it has taken me so long to find it.Listed in: Ice Cream

Ever since moving to the East Coast I have been craving not only ice cream, but just a great overall sundae to satisfy the cravings. When I first walked into the place, I was not only blown away by the great smelling waffle cones, but by the variety of ice creams that they had!!
There is a great variety of flavors from your vanilla and chocolate to your lychee and pound cake! To top it off, they offer a good variety of toppings to add to your ice cream and the cones are flat out amazing.
In addition the customer service was great as well as the workers were all smiles. Even when my friend dropped her ice cream on the ground (I won't mention any names), the workers were more than happy to give her a free replacement.
Great overall experience every time I come here!
No more Mr. Softee trucks for this guy!! -
Review from linda c.
Lots of flavors and choices (floats, sundaes, slushes, italian ice) but the ice cream seems like it's pumped full of air. It misses on consistency. A very good example of quantity over quality.
Very little seating inside despite having a huge floor area. What's with that? I notice that someone included a picture of the place. Today (18 July 2010) it has one table with two chairs.
They close during the winter, which I think bites.
We went to Tommy Two Scoops over on York St. yesterday for gelato...and it was MUCH better and they have a bunch of seating out back.
Come on Torico. You've finally got some serious competition. Time to set about improving on all fronts. -
Review from Laryssa W.
Jersey City, NJ
I am a huge fan of fresh, homemade ice cream, and this place earns my gushing approval. I was so impressed by all the unique flavors; there's something here to satisfy every taste and craving! I could hardly decide.
I chose a cup of chocolate marshmallow drizzled with hot fudge. I usually prefer vanilla-based flavors, but this ice cream looked too good to pass up. It had a perfect chocolate taste and was smooth and creamy, not chalky. The marshmallow fluff swirled throughout was a perfect counterpoint to the chocolate flavor. The hot fudge on top was fresh and not cloyingly sweet.
The employees are very friendly, and service is quick! I highly recommend Torico's. -

When: Whenever possible
Meal: Dessert
The restaurant: It's tiny and it's very much a village ice cream shop, and it's all the more lovely because of it.
The food: One word: YUM. This is quite possibly the best ice cream parlor I've been to (Rich's II in Toms River is the other "best"). I love taking my friends here. Mostly I just love ice cream. They even have an Ube flavored ice cream. I'm not wholly sure what an Ube is (a friend told me it was some kind of fruit), but that they have it is a testament to the variety of flavors they offer. The soft ice creams are the best.
Final verdict? Perfect for those hot summer nights and slow walks around the neighborhood, and for reflecting on what a charming little area of Jersey City you've found yourself in. -
Review from Andre P.
This is as good as neighborhood ice cream gets. Ice cream doesn't need to be fancy. Artisinal ice-cream sounds neat, but what we want is a cone topped off with your-choice-of-ice-cream, sitting outside and perhaps an espresso to follow. Torico's has them all.
It's the perfect small town ice-cream shop in downtown Jersey City. The people that work there are friendly and entertain giving you samples until you make your choice. There are enough flavors to chose from and even some soft-serve ice-cream too.
And inexpensive!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Jersey City, NY
It's little places like this that make me love my hometown. Fresh, homemade ice cream that is made right in front of you. It is amazing.
Torico's has been open for as long as I can remember. When we were kids, we would come in here and hang out for hours on end. And they never kicked us out, just as long as we kept buying ice cream.
Nowadays, I usually take my niece here while I'm babysitting. Yes, I bribe her by taking her here. Just like a little kid, she never knows what to go. She'll put her nose up against the glass and try to see what each ice cream looks like. And like a little kid, she always gets the chocolate with sprinkles. She'll look at 1003 flavors and she'll always get the chocolate.
Me? I always get the chocolate as well. I'm a chocolate fiend, just like my niece. Guess I know where she got her love for chocolate from. -

I love Torico's and find myself there quite often during the summer. They have a HUGE variety of flavors and their soft serve is great. In addition they also have Fat Free Soft Serve and Italian Ices! I'm a big fan of the place, and the lines usually go by quickly because they have 3/4 girls working at a time.
If you want to stay and sit there there are tables & chairs both inside and out, which are really convenient.
The only reason I didn't give it a five star rating is because the price is a little high for a treat, but every once in a while it's nice. Overall though, this place is great..it's tasty and there's great service & atmosphere. What more could you ask for? -

Have you ever heard of pound cake ice cream? Well if you want to try it, you've got to head to Torico's. They also have some yummy tropical flavors like ube, jackfruit, lychee, and mamey. I don't know what mamey tastes, so I'm going to have to try it next time.
If you like soft serve ice cream, they have over 20 flavors! -
Review from Ed A.
Although I've lived here all my life, I'd never even heard of this place until last week. I finally went on Saturday night, and I was tempted to write a review based on that experience, but I thought I'd hold off until I went again.
Well, I wound up going back the next day lol. Both times, the service was very quick even though the line was pretty long. They had at least 5-6 people working the counter. The chicks working the counter were pretty cute too (don't see how that could be anything but a plus, haha).
The ice cream was really good.. I had a pound cake ice cream the first time - awesome.. not too sweet, but just right. The second time I had a coffee cookie ice cream... it was even more awesome; coffee ice cream with an abundance of oreo cookies inside. Again, it wasn't so sweet that you want to go into hyperdrive, but it was just plain good ice cream. Also, if you ask for one scoop, they give you one VERY generous scoop.
My family likes coming here, and they usually get the flavored sherbets. I'm not a fan of sherbets in general, so I can't comment on those.
Finally, the prices: after being used to Ben and Jerry's and Coldstone pricing in Hoboken, the pricing here was a welcome change. $~3 for a pretty large serving of ice cream isn't that bad at all. oh and they also have soft serve if that's more your thing.
Couldn't find anything bad to say about this place other than it's going to kill any semblance of a diet I imagined myself being on this summer. Great place and great service. 5 stars all around -

Jersey City, NJ
This place really does have great home made ice cream. Pretty much the only thing that beats it is gourmet crafted gelato (Il Labratorio, L'Arte Del Gelato, etc).
With the HUGE selection of flavors I wanted to make my first visit count, so I opted for the exotic flavors sampler:
Jackfruit (Amazing flavor. Hard to describe)
Mamey (very light flavor)
Lychee (light lychee flavor, but I'm not a lychee fan so I only tasted once)
Green Tea (doesn't compare to good Japanese green tea ice cream)
Pumpkin (tastes just like the filling in pumpkin pie)
Ginger (probably my favorite out of the lot. Addictive. Has little bits of ginger root in it)
Avocado (VERY light flavor, but super rich)
Cinnamon (not 'spicy' cinnamon, but good cinnimon flavor)
Overall it was a great selection of ice creams. My only complaint was that most of the flavors were just a bit too light for my liking. Take the flavors up a notch and this is a 5 easy.
Water Refill Meter: N/A
They have seats to eat your ice cream there, but it's not like they do table service :-)
For everyone's reference here's their ice cream flavor list:

Don't pass this place up!
This is by far the BEST ice-cream parlor I have ever been to! I've been going to Torico's for as long as I can remember and the place has improved tremendously. Not that it was bad before, but it's grown into this lovely local ice cream spot that everyone loves. The choices here are endless!! I'm guessing it tastes so good because it's homemade? Whatever it is, it's amazing! That place is packed in the summer with people of all ages. It's cute too because they have pictures of their customers/locals on one of their walls. The walls are also adorned with all their fabulous ice cream flavors.
Although the staff is usually high school kids, the service is 5 stars. They are very patient and will give you ice cream samples upon request. If you have the pleasure of meeting the owner, he is very nice as well.
Prices have definitely gone up over the years, but so has everything else! The portion size is generous, so it's worth your 5 bucks! -

The ice cream is homemade, and they offer a wide variety of flavors -- which means that it's extremely fresh and tasty. I tried two kinds today: the chocolate marshmallow, which was light on the marshmallow but still very delicious, and the cinnamon -- which was awesome.
Torico's also offers a range of slushies, which are another refreshing summertime treat. If I lived in the area, I'd probably make the walk here at least a couple of nights a week after dinner. Well worth checking out.
If you're heading in from Manhattan, it's not too far from the Grove Street PATH station, and there are two pleasant parks also within easy walking distance. Catch the PATH, grab a cone, and head for some green space! -

I been meaning to hit up toricos for a while. I finally did and it delivers. It's a small ice cream shop in jersey city but it offers much more with a ton of homemade exotic flavors and soft serve.
I came on a hot evening and it was generously packed - good sign. The list the lot of they're flavors on the board for both soft serve and ice cream. I decided to taste test soursop (guanabana) just b/c I love the goya drink. It was alright, just a hint of flavor.
I ended up getting the 2 flavors I'm obsessed with right now (coconut and green tea). It was actually coconut pineapple (with lots and lots and coconut and pineapple pieces) and it was yum!!! Green tea was solid. With homemade green tea it's very easy just to put vanilla ice cream and throw in matcha. It's wasn't the best I had but I'd have it again.
I have to go back though to see if it's legendary. And my test for that is their Ube (purple yam). My favorite for store bought Filipino ice cream. If it's the best I've ever had, I'll let you know.. haha
Seating is limited with a few tables with a long bench and and chairs. There's also a few tables outside too but honestly, it's always good to take a walk on a good day with good ice cream.
All in all, it's a perfect neighborhood shop but for the flavors and quality alone it's worth the trip. 5 stars! -

New York, NY
One of my molars kills me every time I'm here, though I'm not sure that is Torico's fault, but rather my shoddy dental work. The ice cream is---guess what--really cold, and very sweet, and very tasty. The folks who work here are helpful and tend to give you more than you ask for (when you're paying $5 for a medium you better get more). Flavors to steer towards: pumpkin, avocado (for originality), vanilla bean (classic), anything with peanut butter in it. My roommate had the caramel syrup last night and claimed it tasted homemade. While I don't know the validity of the homemade-ness of the caramel, I do know that if a place can convince you without even saying anything that you are eating homemade... then you must keep it on your favorites list.
For NYC-area visitors, it's about 3 blocks from the Grove Street PATH station. Yes it's right next to the police station but consider yourself extra safe -- and you go get yourself a cone.
Open until 11pm! EDIT: I think it may be open until 10pm now. -

I haven't tried a flavor there that I haven't liked, and I've been at least 4 times, trying both my flavor and a friend's.
Here's a hot tip: End of the season in the winter, they start packing up the bulk ice cream into take-home quarts for $5 (they usually sell for $12). Stock up then until the snow thaws and they can reopen in March. -

DELICIOUS!!
I love "Mom and Pop" shops and missed them so much during my Florida and DC stays..
This shop is adorable and filled with homemade goodness. A bit pricey for one scoop but they do tend to have a heavy hand when making a cone.
The flavors vary from chocolate marsh mellow to guava berry .. all as delicious and the fruit flavors have REAL chunks of fruit. They also make cakes, sundaes, shakes and so on .
I had a double scoop of chocolate peanut butter and vanilla cookie dough my guy had a coconut milkshake. We also purchased an apple pie sundae for later.
The cone was delicious and had the right amount of cone to ice cream ratio, the shake was light and tasty. Neither item tasted old or stale like some other places in town.
The service was great .. and I also enjoyed the sampler packs you can buy. Sadly they do close for the winter .. so stock up now! -

Was just introduced to this place tonight! Very "cool" place from ice cream (ok that was a really corny joke even for me!)
Anyway, there were so many flavors and types of ice cream it took several samples for me to narrow down to one scoop (giant scoop at that) of Coffee Cookie ice cream in a cake cone that had been chocolate dipped with chocolate sprinkles!
Ice creams: At least 30 flavors (a fellow yelper earlier posted an extensive list of them)
Sherberts: 10 flavors include Mango
Soft serve: 25 flavors!! I couldn't believe it until I saw it.
They also have ice cream floats, cakes, ice cream sandwiches, milkshakes, sugar cones, waffle cones, waffle bowls. I think even frozen yogurt.
It's a pretty small place, with a few seats but enough room for you and a few friends to hang about.
Delicious, will be back!Listed in: Sweet Tooth

Jersey City, NJ
I've only been here a couple times, so I feel like I'm wading into a big debate by posting this review. I love, love, love this place as a neighborhood/Jersey City institution, love the atmosphere, love the friendly, sweet servers, love the mix of all different types of people young and old that make the place what it is, but I'm afraid I have to say I'm slightly underwhelmed by the quality of the ice cream itself as compared to other famous NYC-area ice cream spots like Chinatown Ice Cream factory.
I appreciate their attempt to go into "exotic" (essentially Asian) flavors, but I've tried both the Ginger and Lychee varieties and found the flavors a little too weak, compared to what you'd get in a genuinely Asian ice cream place. The ice cream itself is sweet, creamy, and obviously homemade, but the high sugar content kind of overwhelms the "exotic" ingredients. I'm sure the more conventional, western flavors would be fantastic though.
Still, I love everything this place is about as a true, local, non-chain business, and as a place that's open late and brings all different kinds of people together, and hope it sticks around forever. -

I love this place. Whether I am having sherbet or a killer ice cream Sunday I always leave Torico's satisfied and thinking about what I want next time.
Two weeks ago my husband and I went in for an afternoon snack and walked out with an ice cream cake too (for later) and it was delicious.
If you are near Grove Street you NEED to give this homemade ice cream shop a try. -
Review from jeff c.
If you like soft hand packed ice cream a la Australian homemade, then this place is for you. They offer sample packs of 8 for $9.95 where you get to try many flavors. I thought the ice cream here was way too soft. I tried two samples: the Soursop sorbet, which was good, and the Mamey ice cream, which was very subtle. I then proceeded to order two scoops (~$4.50): one banana (strong flavor, good) and blueberry cheesecake (whole blueberries in there, too bad the 'cheesecake' part tasting faux and reminded me of medicine). That said, I am indifferent about going back. I'll stick to my CICF as I like my ice cream 'chewy'
Total came out to $4.98 after everything -

This place has the nicest staff I have ever encountered (even when the line is out the door and it's slammed). They have tons of flavors and an entire section of soft serve which is impressive. I was also struck by their exotic sorbet fruit flavors (passion fruit, soursop, jack fruit, etc).
Definitely a gem in Jersey City! -
Review from Jared C.
They advertise 60 flavors, but somehow I think it is more... there always seems to be too many to make a quick decision. The good news is that any decision is a good one.
On my last visit a children's birthday party was in full swing, with kids doing laps around the tables chasing each other. The place was filled with balloons and screams, just the way an ice cream parlor should be, even if they were stepping on my feet.
Maybe it is true that the milkshakes are not quite as thick as I would prefer, but the ice cream is so good that in the end it does not matter. The best part is that you can choose any flavor they have, and they will create the shake with it. They don't even mind if you encourage them to make it as thick as possible. The small chocolate I ordered ($4.15) froze my hand on a day much too chilly to be drinking ice cream, but it was a small price to pay. I think this might be the best milkshake in the city. -

as the other's have said.... many many many flavors to choose from.. 3 kinds of coffee flavors, lychee, jackfruit (whatever that is), vanilla peanutbutter, Butterscotch (yum!), even avocado flavored ice cream... besides all thee ice cream flavors, they've also got plenty of topping flavors too. Prices are average, and you get just the right portion size. definitly a place to try when you're in the area. and the staff is very friendly and you can sample as many flavors before deciding.. they also have these readymade sampler sets if you can't choose and are with agroup of people.. they are like a set of 6 or so flavors within a certain theme that you buy and share.
As you can imagine, this place is swarming with children, but they aren't annoying when they're eating bubblegum flavored ice cream. -

mmm...what can I say?
This is the best ice cream on earth. I can't believe I live right behind it and after almost two years residing in that area, I just found out about Torico's.
The best, it brings good memories of my hometown in South America where I used to have avocado ice cream, mamey, vanilla bean, coconut cream, passion fruit, and a wide selection of the best tropical fruits in one place.
Creamy texture, big portions and good prices. I think I'm becoming addicted to this place. -

Just six words: Cinnamon and Pound Cake Ice Cream.
Homechurned ice cream in like, 091231092284234 flavors. Okay, not really, but plenty to fulfill any appetite and taste palate. Though it's a bit pricy, for fresh baked waffle cones (with free samples!) and good portions of ice cream, it's awesome.
The service is good -- the staff is nice, they'll let you sample whatever kind of ice cream (and multiple flavors without getting snappy), give suggestions, aren't impatient, and the first time I went they gave me an extra scoop for no charge.
The last time I went, there was a huge line, so I ended up walking out instead of ordering the water I wanted to (i did get an ice cream before the line). But all in al, it's superfantastical. Dangerous for future dental health, but superfantastical nonetheless. -

We love this place! There are so many flavors making it hard to choose which one to have. I especially love their Mamey ice cream. Mamey is so hard to find, but it is so good and Torico knows just how to make it right. I only wish this place didn't close during the winter. I write this as see the snow outside and wishing the winter will finally end.

They've got a walk up window, so if you've got a pet or ride a bike, you can tap on the window and get what you need. The location is ideal for anyone who walks, but not for drivers. A good place to finish your lunch after eating at La Conguita, located a block away. Safe because the police station is practically next to it. Safer if they sell donuts hahaha. Will try the Ube next time, I'm a vanilla softie waffle cone kind of guy.

Crazy ice cream goodness! I am a cheap skate at heart, so when I will pay for the medium sundae without blinking an eye, trust me, it is worth it. As stated, all the ice cream is home made. They have flavors out the wazoo. Funky flavors (ginger), flavors you have never heard of (lychee), twists on old favorite flavors (vanilla peanut butter) and classics. The service is always great, they are always patient with me (I get all deer-in-headlight with too many choices), and it is one of my favorite places to take out of towners. The biggest downfall is that I must walk past them every day on the way home, so it is hard not to enter every time. I figure if I do go in everytime, sooner or later I won't fit in the door, so that helps to keep me out. Oh, wait, they have a walk up window. Dang it!

This is pretty much the best ice cream you'll have. There are dozens of flavors from which you can choose, and they're all homemade. You can sample as many flavors as you like before you commit to one. They have really interesting flavors, like avocado, pound cake, ube, and jack fruit. All of the servers are helpful and nice, making this a great customer service experience.

I truly love this ice cream shop. The service is amazingly warm and friendly and you will never run out of delicious options! My favorites are the less standard flavors like ginger, mamey (similar taste to an almond and cherry mix) and avocado. This year's newest flavor, soursop, resembles creamy citrus and is also really light and delicious. The portions are much larger than you would imagine and are really reasonably priced! Review from Linda H.
Jersey City, NJ
First time I went I got Coffee Cookie. Second time I got Mint Chocolate Chip. Both were excellent and the staff is friendly. Great neighborhood place.
