Beautiful as hell and cold as shit. Coming from Georgia I wasn't used to crystal clear lakes, but trust me when I say you get used to it quickly and then you despise the black water lakes of South Georgia and the muddy fake lakes of mid-Georgia.
Coming up to Northern Michigan always seems like a flashback in time to me when things were simpler and I didn't have to work for a living. The way of life is slower up here and the best thing to do is chill out, check out the charming little towns, ride in the boat, and enjoy all that life and nature has to offer. -

Torch Lake was rated by National Geographic magazine of one of the three most beautiful lakes in the world. The other one I've seen is Lake Tahoe and believe me, Torch is much more beautiful than that one! The gorgeous blue/aqua waters are breathtaking! We happen to own a cabin on the lake but there are rentals of various kinds around the lake. There are few public parks but a number of public access points around the perimeter.
In early spring the ice melts and you are left with some chilly waters for early summer but around July through September the lake is bearable for swimming and often actually warm lately.
It is a deep lake and large enough for boating, both sail and motor boats. There are numerous towns around the lake, mostly small and charming. Alden is one of those.
Come stay for a week and you will not regret it. My family loves this lake and comes every summer.
