YUM!  Of course I quickly find a great Thai place in New York but have tried all over DC and just failed.

I have been here twice now, the first time our dishes were good, but came out cold so I was a bit hesitant to come back, but they were hot and delicious the next time!

I like that they put vegetables in their dishes, even the drunken noodles.  They use great spices and the food is fast and cheap!  I like the ambience, overall just a great little place!  Get the sticky rice!

The place is always packed for lunch. Finally made it here for dinner.

The food is pretty good.. comparable to most Thai places.

The one thing that turned me off big time, there was a fruit fly buzzing around. Yeah, I'm a snob like that, I prefer a fly free zone when I'm eating.

Have you always dreamed of eating a meal in a Yankee Candle store? Me either, but I think I ate my lunch there today, or at least that's what this place smelled like.

It's really hard to enjoy your food when all you can taste is cheap air freshener. I mean it, it was like when an old lady wears too much perfume and you can actually taste the scent.

I'm not sure if they burned something earlier and were trying to cover it up, because I browsed the other reviews and didn't see any similar comments. I wouldn't even go back if it smelled like a normal restaurant in the future. The service was snobby- no eye contact, no communication. The restaurant gets so loud during lunch you have to shout to be heard. Oh, and the tables are so close together you have to get up every time your neighbor enters or exits.

Yea, I'd order the shrimp Pad Thai as takeout. It was surprisingly some of the better Pad Thai I've had in the area, but the restaurant itself is a miserable hell hole.

Love their lunch specials (under $10).  My favorite is the fancy noodles in green curry.  I sometimes ask this to be made in red curry (equally delicious).  The restaurant fills up quickly at lunch time so expect to wait unless you get there before 12:30  Service is good, friendly, and fast.

Nothing describes this place better than a mediocre lunch place for less than $10.  The service is also incredibly slow.  It took way longer than it should have to serve 3 people in a so-so busy place.  Thumbs down for that.

The food itself was decent, but it wasn't anything that blew my mind.  First were the free shrimp chips with sauce, which I thought was a strange starter... tasty nonetheless.  I ordered the beef basil dish which in which basil was just completely absent.  Full of carrots and chinese broccoli.  I guess I just have never had Thai food quite like this?  Normally my basil dishes come with basil and green peppers and all that jazz.  It says spicy, but for my seasoned tongue, it was probably a 2 out of 10.  I can't complain too much, though, it was a decent meal at a decent price.

Not sure if I would come back though if I had a choice... I feel there are better midtown options for lunch.

This is a little Thai restaurant tucked into the basement level of a building (as most places in overcrowded NYC are). We were seated in the cute little 2 person nook in the front of the restaurant which was really neat.

The food was good but the side of rice was very small and not adequate for two people to share. The pork was on the dry side in the drunken noodles dish and the panang curry was good but just mediocre. I'm only giving this place 3 stars because it was just an average dining experience, and unfortunately like the majority of restaurants in NYC it is on the grungy side with remnants of food and questionable material on the walls, the sill, and the water glass.

This restaurant has a lot of great reviews.  I just went for lunch today and it was packed.  Which is  great... but... that also meant it was rather hot.  The food had really flavor but it kinda tasted like i caught them in their rush hour.  What I mean by that is my dish had all the flavors but had not been mixed properly to coat all the food.

Other than that, the waiters were very sweet, the food in general was quite good, and the price was great.  I will definitely go back or order from there for lunch again.  Total yes on regular lunches!

Topaz Thai doesn't offer fine dining; it offers GREAT DINING. I've been coming here ever since I came to this city almost 6 years ago, and have been dragging friends and family along whenever possible. I went for dinner with a friend last night, and yeah, I will clearly continue to come back.

Here's why: The service is decent (always kind, if not always perfect), the food is delicious, and the prices are great. You have to try REALLY HARD to spend a lot of money here, but you don't have to try that hard to leave with a full and happy belly.

My favorite dish here is the Massaman curry. When I'm feeling skinny (or simply indulgent), I treat myself to the sticky rice. Marvelous. If you're an avocado lover, you simply have to try that dish. The Drunken noodle is wonderful, too, and I'm glad I tried the Pad woonsen for the first time last night as well. It was fresh, lighter on flavor than my friend's drunken noodle, but ultimately satisfying and not too heavy. The Pad see ew is also delish. I'm not the hugest fan of Pad Thai all the time, but it's yummy here. Basically, all of the food is awesome and inexpensive.

The ambiance is almost kitschy, but I don't mind it. It's always packed and filled with happy people (because the food is awesome and inexpensive), so you can get past the fact that the decor is kinda reminiscent of a...wait for it...yeah, I'm gonna say it...funeral home (ouch). I mean, seriously, you can get past it. 10 minutes inside and you're too busy salivating to complain about gross burgundy velvet everywhere. The vibe and food are just that pleasant!

The only complaint I have was that for the first time ever, the peanut sauce they give you for the lovely air chippies they serve was thin and runny. That made me sad. But not sad enough to ruin this review!

I'd heard about this place but never visited. Having visited it with my girlfriend, I am definitely impressed and will return when I have time (which there is little of when you visit NYC).

Pad Thai and Wontons were great. What makes them better is the price. I didn't realize that food was this cheap in NYC. It seems only to be in Asian restaurants that you can get these type of deals. It makes me suspicious of the food but who cares when you walk out bloated with your mouth on fire -- I don't.

    Overall, awesome!

I had lunch here a few weeks ago.  My friend and I both ordered the Pad Thai.  Very tasty.  The portions are huge and the price is very reasonable.  I will definitely be back to try the wonton soup others have mentioned.

Service was okay.  The restaurant is small, so the tables were very close together.

I almost always get delivery from topaz. I like their massaman curry because it has a good sized avacado slice(which i love) with chicken. The red and yellow curry is also quite good. The curry has lots of sauce which is great with rice. Sometimes I drink the curry like soup, that's how good it is. Plus it comes with these fish chip(?) things- they give you more when you order earlier than later.

However, if you get delivery, speak very clearly because the person who answers the phone does not have the best english. Multiple times, he has gotten my address wrong and I had to call back/wait a long time for the food(poor delivery man).

Found myself midtown again and craving Thai, so I hit up menupages looking for a good place to order in from.

This place had 4 or 5 stars, so I ordered my usual which is a green curry with brown rice and I also ordered their wonton soup.

THE WONTONS WERE AMAZING! The soup was really great.

The curry was really great too. Sooooo delicious. So much chicken. I actually couldn't eat it all, I gave up halfway through and took the rest home, which is unheard of for me and a green curry. So the next day, i nuked some 60 second brown rice and some extra greens and poured the remaining curry over it and had green curry again. Yay!

My one beef with them was that when I ordered, I figured my total was about $13... $8.95 for the green curry and $3.50 for the soup... even if the menu is outdated and everything went up a dollar... well, when the delivery guy came, the total was $16 and some change! He had a lot of trouble finding where I am, and I didn't feel like arguing with him, it wasnt his fault, or stiffing him for the tip (it was also raining), so I just gave him a $20.

I don't know that i will order from them again and if i do, I'm going to ask for the total before I hang up. One one consolation is the HUUUUGE portion i got with so much chicken, that I sot of had Thai twice by having it the next day.

So, double check your order with them.

The food, however, was fantastic. Love those damn wontons!

    EDIT 11/17:
Ok! So I was in midtown again, it was raining, didn't want to venture outdoors... so I ordered in from here again, because the food was just that good. It was then that I realized that I was looking at the lunch menu prices when I ordered last time (it was dinner). My bad! So I upgraded my rating to 4 stars. I got the seafood fried rice and the wonton soup again (I am i love with these magical wontons... they're really that great... they're pork, and the meat tastes really fresh and not fatty with a hint of sesame oil flavour). The seafood fried rice was delicious, with big meaty shrimp, squid and mussels - all tender and fresh as can be. I really, really like this place.

    We have a winner!!!

12/05: upgraded to 5 stars! love this place! :)

My friend was visiting from out of town and it is right next to her hotel. Easy and affordable.

While the food was pretty good, I was blown away by the rudeness of one of the servers. We asked a passing for plates since we had nothing to eat our apetizer on. Since he didn't acknowledge he heard us, we asked him again when he passed by. Instead of nodding, he literally gave us the hand - he put his arm up and gave us the hand. I was so shocked and when he came back, I told him that gesture was disrespectual and unnecesarry. He responded with a snotty thank you and sashayed off. An apology would have been nice.

And speaking of sashay, all of the servers treated the dining room as though it was their personal runway. I an not exagerating when I tell you there were walkway turns and head swivels.  Not exactly the restaurant experience I wanted and will definitely not be returning. There are plenty of other great Thai places that treat their customers with respect.

Thank you again, Yelpers, for helping me find great Thai food.  After the initial hiccup of me misunderstanding the nice host regarding my reservation -- your entire party must be there to be seated -- everything was great.  I sing in a big choir that performs at Carnegie Hall, and it's a struggle to find somewhere to eat that is relatively inexpensive, tasty, and relatively quick.  Yes, there is a Chipotle on the corner, but a giant serving of delicious beans might add too much to the music.  Ha ha.

So the hubs met me and we were in and out in 45 minutes (plenty of time before the show).  We ordered the crispy rice with peanut sauce, and then it appeared as though every table got a basket of it -- we weren't charged, so I guess it's a free little treat.  I got the tamarind duck, half a duck, that must have been the back/lower half, as it came with two legs.  Sweet, no complaints.  The gingery sauce, pineapple, cashews, and chinese broccoli were all perfect complements.  Plenty of crispy duck skin provided rich flavor.  The boy got massaman curry with chicken, another favorite, and sticky rice.  There was a lot of sauce, which I just ate with a spoon and loved.  Very peanut-y, very creamy.  At the end of it all, with tip, it was $40, so not the cheapest, but it was good, it's in the hell of midtown, and we had a nice table by the window to peer out at people in fancy clothes.  And the bathroom was big enough to change in.  Bonus.

Went there with co-workers for lunch last week, got take-out, and found the service and food to be fine -- the lunch values are undeniably a good value.

    HOWEVER

I encountered THE WORST customer service I've ever experienced, when I went there with co-workers today, this time for a sit-down meal.  We were about to enter the restaurant when we saw the maitre d leading a party of a few out of the door, heading over to the other side of the establishment. So we asked him:

    "Are there any seats inside?"
Maitre d (in a really careless, hippie voice): "IIIIII DOONN'T KNNNOW."

A bit stunned, we tried to follow him (unfamiliar with the routine), thinking that we would be seated on the other side since the main dining room's full anyways.  We entered the smaller room, and asked him again if there's any seats.

Maintre d: "Aaaactually, the main entrance is on the other side. Yooou need to go wait there." (It's really the way that he said it that made it unbearable.)

So we went back to the main side, still wanting to give it a chance, and were thoroughly ignored by that same maitre d.  We left...probably won't come back again.

It's a pity that a restaurant of fine value and food is smeared by such an awful maitre d.  He could've easily said what he meant to say a little differently and it've made a big difference, but it doesn't look like he cared about any of the customers.  If you want to get food there, get take-out.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars after 2 trips. Let me explain why.

People complain about the service. OK so it is not great. Fine. I cannot counter that. But this place has some excellent redeeming qualities that make me not care even if the service is off sometimes.

    1) Food quality
    Pad Thai -- excellent
    Drunken Noodles -- delicious
    Chicken entrees -- yum

Food quality and food taste is rock solid!

    2) Price and quantity
Wow, quite a deal. In midtown Manhattan? No way. Yes way. The pad thai + app would have been enough for me and my wife easily. We took a ton to go. The food quality was not lessened despite the generous portion size.

Noodle dishes are $10 on weekends and $7.50-8 for lunch. Tremendous value.

    3) Interior of restaurant
Quaint, interesting, charming, albeit a bit cramped. But I liked it. Different.

    4) Variety on menu
Solid variety, lots of good options

    3.5 stars
But wait, they deserve a bump. Why?

It was 430pm and my wife and I had a pickup at 5 pm. Very limited time. I walked in and said "I don't need a menu. Just 1 drunken noodle to share, and quickly if possible, we have 30 min total" --- the waiter did not give me a bad look or flinch. He sat us down, brought out 2 plates for sharing, 10 min later the noodles arrived, 10 min later we were done, bill arrived, leftovers packed to go, and we were out. Well done guys, extra half star (and a nod to GOOD service unlike many reviews).

In sum --- a very affordable, solid Thai place with generous portions located in a good safe place in Manhattan. 4 stars.

Affordable dinner in Midtown?! In a sit-down restaurant?!  This place is great and the food is reasonably priced.  The drunken noodle is actually better than the SriPraPhi Thai (sp?) in Woodside.  It can be difficult to get a table around dinner time so make a reservation.

This is by far the best thai restaurant I've been to in my whole life. I've been eating here for over 7 years now and the place has been consistently delicious.

There are many vegetarian options here. I have tried them all and they are all DELICIOUS.
    The Drunken Noodle is addictive.
My husband always gets Lovely in the Golden Nest and loves it.
Basically, I have never ordered something here and not liked it.

The dinner portions are large so make sure you come hungry.
They have lunch specials and serve more normal portions at lunchtime. (although its been a while since I went there for lunch so this may have changed.)

They don't take reservations and at peak times you usually have to wait for a table. But the wait is well worth it. Also, once you order your food, the service is pretty quick.

Pleasantly surprised.  Came here with a group of 7, and 6 out of 7 of us liked what we got.  And I think the 7th, who didn't like it, may have simply ordered something he didn't want, rather than getting something bad.  I got noodley vegetable something-or-other curry, and I was expecting it to be just okay, but I really enjoyed it and didn't even miss the fact it didn't have meat.  This is pretty much a useless review, isn't it?  Sorry.  I wasn't paying attention to the details.  Too busy eating and drinking.

One more note: it was pretty loud, during lunch.

I went here with my family of 4 and really enjoyed it. We made a reservation and were seated immediately, except we were in a different section than the main room. It seemed to be a newer section of the restaurant. The ambiance was really nice and the staff was very friendly. Our waiter was very willing to explain everything on the menu for us and helped us make great decisions. We had the shrimp cakes for an appetizer. They came with a cucumber salad and were very good. I ordered the drunken noodles and my family got the Panang curry and the red curry. Everything we ate was delicious and a very good portion. We ended up paying about $65 which was very reasonable.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food was here.

This is just one of those places where you can't judge a book by it's cover and just from the look of this place, you wouldn't expect much out of it. This place is pretty small for how busy it gets and they do have another section next door which isn't connected, but they can fit more people than before.

I had the chicken drunken noodles and was blown away. I'm used to the commercial Thai food where everything is thrown around in a matter of minutes so it's never that good. My noodles came out pretty fast and super hot! It wasn't too spicy, even though it had a pepper next to it on the menu, and the chicken wasn't dry! I've been to so many places that served dry chicken and it really kills the meal, but everything about my dish was great.

Can't complain about the service and the prices were priced no differently than other thai restaurants. No complaints at all. Great place for a quick and affordable meal.

I went to this place w/some friends for dinner because of the great reviews on menupages, but it was really mediocre. The best thing were the teeny-tiny dumplings in an amazing dipping sauce. The entrees were so-so: drunken noodle was kind of one note and very few veggies, and same w/the yellow curry.

I don't like leaving bad reviews but I must warn you. Our office ordered delivery from Topaz the other day. I had the chicken Pad Thai, it disapointing and the chicken tasted off, I threw most away. Late that night I wake with a churning stomach and run to the bathroom. Next day at work I learned that the rest of the office that ordered also got sick.

Co-workers say they've eaten at Topez before and haven't gotten sick. For me its the first and last time I order from them.

Other yelpers are also claiming food poisoning along with dirty restrooms.  This place is nasty. my recommendation is STAY AWAY!  You've been warned.

Went here on a Sunday with a few friends.  We were sat pretty much immediately before the place got crowded.

I kept it simple, ordered Pad Thai and my wife ordered Pad See Ew.  Both were great and cooked perfectly.  The noodles weren't overcooked and they entrees weren't too saucy.

Combine that with good service, makes 4 stars.  Will return.

Pleasant surprise that we found a decent Thai place in a touristy area close to Central Park.

The service, however, is horrible.  Pretty much every irritating disservice that can happen in a restaurant has happened to me here.

But I swear the food is AMAZING enough to bring it from one star to three.  I will continue to come here, expecting to be pissed off and talking shit about the wait staff with whoever I dined with as I leave... with a full and satisfied belly and a bag of delicious leftovers (forgot to mention that the portions are big).

Really good green curry and good pad se ew. Red curry was above average but not as good as the green. I ordered from this place multiple times a week and it's my "go to" Thai spot in this area of town. Awesome!

Only did take out. Had the Pad See Noodle with Chicken and Pork.  This food is really good. I highly recommend it if you are in the area. Price is standard fare for Thai food.

Some of the yummiest thai food I've had in NYC :) Allways crowded, the service is not that great but the food is worth it.
tried the curry puffs (yummy) the spring rolls (good but not fabulous), the chicken drunken noodles (SO DELISH), a duck dish (good), had a bite of the pineapple fried rice which tasted good and had some of my friends sticky rice - very sticky very yummy. Green curry is my favorite. My thai iced tea tasted a little watered down but that was my only complaint. Love the crackers and peanut sauce they give you at the start of your meal.
Tip: The second dining room (you cant enter that way, you get taken there if there is no more space, or if you request it)  is much prettier on the inside, so I like to sit there when I can.

Fantastic thai tucked away in midtown!

My panang curry was some of the best I've had.  My hugest complaint was that there were literally no vegetables in my curry.  Gimme some nutrition Topaz thai!

The sauce was deliciously flavorful and they gave you such a heaping helping i ended up eating it like soup with NO APOLOGIES.  I'd definitely be back again, especially if they have some kind of typical thai lunch special!

Very thoroughly enjoyed the meal here.  The restaurant is fairly packed and crowded, but there was still enough room to feel as though you had some space to eat.  The prices were reasonable, and the food was great.  Service was also pretty quick, especially given how crowded they were.

I do recommend reservations as the place was packed, even early.  But it's worth it for the delicious food.  Try the chicken satay appetizer!
