My first Topanga Days was three years ago, so I can't speak to the level of "sell out" involved.

If you don't like hippies, and/or the "faux-hippie" vibe you won't dig this,

But it's a great festival, and still obviously the place to be for Topanga residents AND ESPECIALLY their kids.  the place is swarming with babies, small children, and young teenagers, most dressed in fantastically hilarious outifits.

Good bands, decent facilities, wonderful, peaceful vibe.

Like Topanga itself,  the fact that is whole thing is happening so close to Los Angeles is amazing.

Once upon a time, Topanga Days was for Topanga locals and the ocassional urbanite who'd make the journey down to Topanga Canyon. Great bands would play there, and the Original Topanga Days was founded on hippie ideals of free love and cheap jewelry.

Fast forward to 2008, where the admission alone is a staggering 18$. Wander around from booth to overpriced booth and look at the 80$ pair of earrings or $125 dress and suddenly realize THAT'S why you saw all those ritzy BMW's parked outside. This is no longer a hippie fest. Doh!

There are a few true originals in the crowd, authenic hippies wearing cheap hemp clothes and messy wavy hair, and you catch a whiff of Topanga Days before it was as pretentious and overbearing as the local mall. The music still rocks. But dude, why am I paying 20 dollars for a Topanga Days t-shirt (conveniently tagged with American Apparel on its collar)?

Topanga used to be about the locals. Now every wannabe hipster comes to this once-awesome county fair. Like I said, some originals don't break tradition and continue to come, year after year. Some booths are actually cute and decently priced. But for what it's worth, Topanga Days has become a let-down. Maybe they'll come through next year, but I won't be there to see if they did.

Where can you see a nude man riding a bicycle, buy a chakra-cleansing crystal, hears some great bands and see some antique autos?  Why it's the annual Topanga Day Parade that culminates at the Community Center for a festival of Topanga-style capitalism.  Bring a few bucks and a good attitude and you are sure to have a fabulous time.
