Have to totally disagree with the previous review. Have had lunch and breakfast here. Both times the food was very good. Well described as comfort food. Not low fat certainly, but not greasy either. They have top quality ingredients. Their burgers are excellent. You can actually taste the beef, its definitely from a local butcher not a mass distributor. Had sausages with my eggs for breakfast and they were also top of the line fare. This is hands on food, well made, and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is definitely casual and absolutely leave any attitude at the door this is a family joint. My only issue is that I have not been able to figure out their breakfast schedule went early on Saturday around 930 AM a couple times and door closed...but food is so good I will persist! If I could ask them for anything it would be to improve upon their coffee, other then that its right up my alley!

After not having been here for a while, I finally got back. I don't think it as much a neighborhood bar as it is a total regular's hangout. When my wife and I first got in, we sat at the bar to wait for everyone else we were having dinner with to arrive. We started out with a couple of draft beers (they have about 6-7 beers on tap - decent selection). As we were sitting at the bar, it seemed like everyone else who came in didn't even have to give the bartender their order as he already knew it. That type of place - pretty cool as these places are few and far between nowadays.
Once everyone had arrived, we grabbed a table to sit down and have some food. Our table started out with an order of the "homemade" fries and mozzarella sticks. The mozz sticks were pretty ordinary but they were decent. I wasn't huge on the homemade fries but people at the table loved them so maybe it was just my taste.
For my meal, I went with a Cowboy burger (bacon, cheddar, BBQ sauce) and sampled some waffle fries that were on the table. The burger was tasty, but it couldn't have been more than a 5-6 oz burger (relatively thin and they don't even ask how you want it cooked). However, the toppings made the burger taste great in a little bit of a messy sort of way. I wasn't huge on the actual burger patty, but the finished product (with toppings) was pretty good. The food prices are incredibly cheap - I was pretty surprised. Waffle fries were decent.
This place also gets a nice little bonus as they put out a spread for happy hour. It consisted of some veggies, chips, goldfish crackers, some pepperoni and cheese and crackers.
All in all, this was an enjoyable meal in what almost felt like a bit of a hideout. I am sure that we will be returning. -

Talk about a neighborhood hang out. Ok, its not really in a neighborhood per se, but its the perfect "dunno where to go tonight.." restaurant. Its kinda dark and kinda old. There's nothing overly special about it, except for their long history, good view (it IS the top of the hill after all), and good home-style cooking and service. Don't get dressed up. Come hungry, and don't look for healthy or gourmet food. Its bar food.
It is family run and owned, and most of the family can be seen at any given time. Get to know Jimmy, the bartender / server / host / etc.
There's usually a small spread of snacks when you walk in - you never really know what will be there, but its always something to munch on. Sure, sometimes its odd looking grilled cheese pieces, and sometimes its simply Goldfish crackers.. but its free, so who cares.
Specials are on the board daily, and if you want the meatloaf you don't want to show up too late. Its popular. And huge. Actually, most everything served here huge. Jimmy may laugh at you, in fact, if your table has 3 orders of fries coming, due to the amount of potatoes that will soon reach your table.
If you can, save some room for dessert. There's a mythical 'fried brownie sundae' listed but I've never seen it. -

I agree with everything good said by anyone else. Its a perfect neighborhood bar, and I thought places like this didnt exist anymore.
Jukebox, live music on Saturdays, and the feeling like you've walked into a good friends home after a long day, and they tell you to sit down and they'll fix you something good to eat. The food is simple-- but good. And they even serve breakfast????
Cheap. Filling. Comfort food. Im home. -

The is a regulars bar. You see some characters in there...and everyone there is out to have a good time. Food is simple, yet very good...and like Pete said...go hungry and don't everyone order fries. Heh.
Oh yeah...don't wear Red Sox apparel in there (or even mention those two words) if you want to get served. ;) -

We are regulars at this neighborhood haunt. It is a great place for sandwiches any time of day or night. Dinners differ night to night, but do try the meatloaf if it isn't sold out.
Saturday nights there is live music if you like oldies and country/western music. No head banging here.
Jimmy the bartender says he likes people to feel like they are at home here and we always do. Root for Rutgers and the Yankees and you will have made friends there for life. -

We made our first visit to Top O' Th' Hill yesterday, which happened to be my birthday, for lunch. We had mozarella stick, brocc and cheese bites, burgers and waffle fries. Everything was quite tasty. Best mozz sticks we've had in a while and the marinara was super delicious. Burgers, fries and brocc bites were good, but not anything to write home about. Nice and greasy, just like good bar food should be. Places like this are hard to find. It's very comfy and personable. Definitely a classic neighborhood place. And the prices are more than fair, I have to say. I plan to get the meatloaf special tonight, and at some point, am def going to try the fish and chips platter. Will update accordingly.

Awesome food but awkward Mostly because it was a meeting place for the KKK in the early 20th century. Got to love that.

2 co-workers have been promising to bring me here for lunch for a while and finally did last week. They raved about the home-made french fries, and they were right, they were delicious. Everything else on the menu was pretty basic and cheap. I had a grilled cheese on whole wheat and it was good (but then again how can you mess that up). They give you a ton a fries - we had 2 orders between the 3 of us, but could have probably just gotten one. I would definitely go back.

Typical local hangout bar with a food menu. Service is quick, hardly ever crowded. Most of the food (fries and burgers especially) can be greasy and hard on the tummy, but it's "old style" bar food, reasonably priced.

It's not quite a hole in the wall.... but it's close. Giants/ Yankee bar and..... Rutgers, free food spread daily (crackers, cheese, pepperoni etc...) Good bar food. Don't expect the bartender to give you an HJ when you walk in. Just order a beer, sit back and enjoy the atmosphere or he will literally rip your face off. Food is good and the service is quick. Only thing I don't like are the wings. Im pretty sure they serve the frozen swanson wings. They are little and slimy (Owners, if you are reading this, please upgrade your wing status). Otherwise go wild. As someone said earlier, one plate of fries is enough to feed the entire bar. Juke box, bands on the weekend, couple cougars struttin around looking to ride a young calf. You may walk in and see some of the original Zoo Crew... I dont know, do you? do you? If you're not an up- tight Yuppie then head on in. Or if you are a Yuppie and want to lose the tie and hair plugs then come get loose. O yeah, there is a restaurant/ eating area as well, but I've never been in that part..... Don't be fooled though, you can bring children here for a meal, just don't blame me when the obesity rate is @ 98%, if you catch my drift.
