Toorak is an exceptional cafe in the Los Altos area. The space is large with plenty of seating. It's also impeccably clean. As my friend and I lounged for a few hours, I saw the baristas go out into the seating area maybe seven times to wipe down the tables and door, and tidy up any chairs that were out of place. However, customers are few and far between, so the workers should have plenty of time on their hands for cleaning.

I can attest to Richard C.'s observation regarding the cafe's contemporary design, infusing minimalism with an Australian continent motif throughout. My personal taste leans more toward a relaxed, bohemian setting. But when I really need to crack down on getting work done, Toorak is my new go-to spot.

The drinks are usually delicious. However, I tried a mocha milkshake the other day to try to satiate my week-long milkshake craving, and I was gravely disappointed. My friend ordered a soy hazelnut latte then a cappuccino since we were there for a few hours, and the espresso shots in each of his drinks were pulled perfectly.

So if you're looking for an alternative to Starbucks Crappy Company, take a walk down to Los Altos and try Toorak. You'll enjoy great service and quality drinks in an immaculate setting.

There is so many reasons why this could be the best hidden gem in Los Altos Area of Long Beach.

    1.  There is no Starbucks trash found nearby.
    2.  Room galore to hang out with friends.
    3.  No ease dropping from nearby coffee sippers.
    4.  The space is quiet, relaxing, and untouch.
    5.  The coffee, teas, and food is excellent and fresh.
    6.  Support the local coffee shop that is 10 x more unique and personable.

Give it a try and you will think twice about another franchise establishment.  :)

This is my favorite, hip coffeehouse in Long Beach. The ambiance is like being in a sleek Swedish cafe. This coffee house is hip. I love the booths and European style seating. If Austria's world famous coffehouses went modern and went non-smoking, they would look like Toorak Coffee. Toorak may not have the Austrian sweet bread and midnight beer, that Vienna carries, but they have yummy pastries from almost every culture: Jewish, French, Austrian and Italian. I love this little coffeehouse. Every time I miss Austria, France or Italy, I come to Toorak for a little close reminder of Europe.

Toorak's coffee drinks, macaroons, and the modern furniture are my favorite. This place is youthful and great for having a coffee with friends, a lap top or a good book. I also love that Toorak is close to my favorite sushi restaurant and cheap Italian grub joint.

Toorak I hardly knew ye.  Ever since you were closed for Labor day weekend, you have not resumed operations.

You had a nice atmosphere, good pastry and coffee, and the most delicious salmon lox baguette I've had, ever. My only regret is when I wanted to order a Nutella milkshake, you were out of Nutella.

Definitely a shame you could never find your groove.

I've passed this place so many times but i've never taken the time to actually walk in. When my classmate & I needed a place to meet up, I yelped "coffee shops" and this came up.

Not having any expectations about this place, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food & space. I ordered their half sandwich/ half soup combo (Turkey & potato soup) & an orchard tea (around 10 bucks total). Lets just say that I was so surprised by their food, that I went a few days later to have the exact same meal. Yum! Potato soup= nice & creamy. Their Turkey sandwich has some type of dressing in it that just makes it & not to mention the soft baguette bread they use. Yay!

Next time I go I need to try something a little bit more Australian...like their coffee. Anyway, this is a great study space, lots of room & sometimes they have live music!

I think they have free wifi...I just borrowed from the spa next door. Heh.

    Only negative: not enough outlets.

An ideal American suburb. You do not think "Toorak Coffee", and perhaps that is why this place is a gem on its own.

Situated in one East Long Beach's oldest shopping areas, Toorak stand out as a hip and fresh coffee venue that easily distinguishes itself from the competition. The decor is modern, the seating area is spacious and the right amount of light pours into this coffee/cafe establishment. Very cheery, and anti-coffee shop chain.

The coffee and food at Toorak does not disappoint. Toorak's pastries, sandwiches and drinks are a step up from the "mass produced" fare you've had anywhere else. On occasion it is paired with attentive customer service.

Pricing and Parking. The two things that drag this place down. Parking is available but congested as it competes with other popular stores. The center was built in another time, where congested parking must've been a non-factor. And Pricing. You didn't think above par pastries was inexpensive did you?

While food and amenities are at another level, its prices also reflect that, truly making it a gem. You frequent jewelry stores only so often and perhaps the same could be said of Toorak.

To agree with Jessica there are some kinks to work out.  Since they were late on opening up their Coffee Bar there were some things missing...like A MENU.  I work at Trader Joes and we were given free coffee coupons.  A lot of my co-workers who redeemed them were given the cold shoulder by their young staff.  I though was warmly greeted by the manager himself and ordered a Cappuccino and it was delicious and I"m not even much of a coffee drinker.

    The decor is as follows...

Masculine walls of concrete and painted canvases and lots of brown and orange (Toorak's Co. Colors)  They have fun chairs to sit in as well as everyday tables & chairs.

They have a deli case filled with sandwiches and gourmet pastries...They looked really good =)

A friend of mine had the Chocolate Eclair and was saddened when asked to pay 4 bucks for a 3" pastry that wasn't even Custard filled...just plain Whipped Cream :(

But this is an up and coming business and I think they bring a fun & individual vibe to the Los Altos shopping district!  Now if only we could get rid of WOK & ROLL next door....

Our knitting group had a meeting here for the first time last night and I must say it was a success. It was a great place for our group--plenty of room, great lighting, and a good variety of sandwiches, pastries, and beverages to satisfy everyone's craving. I had their tuna on focaccia and a slice of black forest cake and a coffee americano. Everything was good, but the cake and coffee were outstanding. The cake was moist, with cherries, and the coffee was strong and scalding but not at all burnt-tasting or bitter. As for the sandwich, I kind of wished they had more choice of side items (they only seem to offer these blue corn tortilla chips), but that's really my only complaint. The girls working at the shop were so nice and helpful--I really liked them.

But I realize what made the place great for my knitting group may not make it great for everyone. For people who like a boho coffee joint, the rather stark and minimalist decor may not appeal, as well as the bright lights. This place seems better for the morning/day crowd than the night hangout crowd, but perhaps it's good for students who want a nicely lit place to study.

This is a delightful little coffee shop that has something to do with Australia that opened just this week right behind our house. Buuuuuuuut, it was their soft opening and they still have a few kinks to work out.......like, having a menu board, or any kind of menu for that matter. Other than that, they have built the bones of a great place to drink coffee, eat pastries, and hang out or even study if you felt so inclined. Tons of seating and tons of wi-fi !

The guy who served us was super adorable and told us that they bake their own bread daily, and serve espresso based drinks........."like americanos". We had an iced americano, a vanilla latte, an eclair, and a chocolate chip cookie, all for the low low price of 14 dollars, ouch! The eclair tasted like it may have been frozen before, but the cookie was pretty good! They have a pretty vast selection of baked goods.....but as far as coffee goes it was really really strong just the way I like it, but I can't attest to the choices since their was no menu, again the kinks to work out!

I hope this place does well though as I love to support non-starbucksy coffee shops and it is right by the school. You might find me here "studying" (but probably yelping), but most likely after their true grand opening! Also, this place is perfect for an open mic......really big with tons of seating, just sayin'!

Hate to rhyme, but i'll be back Toorak! Who am I kidding, I love rhyming !

I'm not one of those "hang out at a coffee house" kind of people, but if I were, I'd definitely come here, especially that every time I pass by and read the sign I can't help but think of that dinosaur video game.

Their "flat white" is probably one of the best lattes I've ever had and not just in Long Beach, like ever in life. You can tell they know how to brew good coffee. Furthermore, the service is impeccably nice. I was actually instructed to SIT DOWN when I was caught standing waiting for my coffee to go, which they personally brought to me when it was ready. It could have been that I was just annoyingly hovering, but either way I'll take that as a sign of good customer service!

If you want something to eat they have a surprisingly decent selection of sandwiches, pastries and desserts, and since this place originated in Australia, they have cool names for everything. It's like you're there, except well not, but you can pretend you are.

This place is pretty big with plenty of tables and chairs and a really contemporary, industrial feel to it. I'd totally come here to study (if I had something to study) or chill with a friend (if I wasn't such a douchebag who needs to take coffee on the run all the time).

I've returned to Toorak many times since it opened in 2009. My favorite drink here is an Australian specialty - the Flat White, which is like a very smooth latte. The blended mocha has a nice malted flavor to it. Toorak also makes a very cute baby-ccino for the little tikes - which is served in a tiny cup with a marshmallow, whipped cream and frothed milk.

Toorak stands out because of their coffee, friendliness, large open space, and free Wi-fi.. Their pastries, cakes, and sandwiches are really high quality, and they continue to work to find new items to offer. Toorak has a student discount, and also promotes itself with offers in social media. The staff is warm, friendly, and always smiling and helpful.

The owner was profiled recently in this article - http://welovelb.org/20.... He owned a chain of coffee houses in Australia, which he sold prior to moving to Southern California.

I love the coffee and ambience of this place!  It's exactly the type of coffee shop I've been looking for in Long Beach.  The place is very clean and the workers are very friendly.  The interior design is lovely but a little to chic for my tastes - like a blend of minimalism and contemporary.  It would be better if it had a more cozy feeling to it.

It's a very huge coffee shop in my opinion (I felt like I was in a restaurant) and every time I've gone there, finding a seat is not a problem (usually I'm the only one there).  Great environment for studying (which I do most of the time) or just to introspect on life.  There is also enough room for the homies (large group of friends) to hang out.  It's great.

The espresso is awesooomeeee.  I enjoy it 100x better than Starbucks and Coffee bean.  And since I've been there multiple times, I can say they're pretty consistent with the quality of their beverages.  When I go to Starbucks or Coffee bean, the taste of the drinks are never the same and sometimes different enough that you might think they got the order wrong or something.  I don't have much to say about their food because I haven't purchased any yet but they sure do look good on the other side of the glass.

I love this place and they will be getting my business.  I'm always down to support local businesses and this one exceeds my expectations.  I only wish they were open later.  Try it for yourself and join the movement.

This place is next to the yummy Deli News.  It has a very modern vibe.  The food is tasty, fresh and pretty healthy.  I had a Salmon sandwich which was thin sliced LOX  with Creme cheese on a Baguette.  It wasn't bad.  I was expecting a nice thick  slice of Salmon considering the price.  The sandwich alone was over $9.00, not sure that's a great deal and it won't fill you up.

I was ready to eat 4 hours later.  I didn't' try any of the coffee.

They have some amazing looking deserts behind the counter.  I didn't try any on this day but I will definitely be back.

I loooove Toorak!  I've been watching the development of this place for the past few months and was excited to try it out.  First of all, I really like the decor.  It has "minimalist-modern-retro"look, with lots of different seating options (both small and large tables, individual chairs...).  They had a full menu up on the wall and a case full of beautiful desserts.

I ordered an iced latte and a chocolate-chip cookie to share with my two young children.  Both were EXCELLENT!  The staff was very accommodating of my kids and didn't bat an eye when my 1 year old smeared melted chocolate all over a chair.

The desserts and coffee range in price from about $2-$4 each.  In a world where people gladly pay $4 for a cupcake, I think Toorak's prices are fair.

I also LOVE the fact that there is ample seating and free-wifi.

Definitely mindful of crowd when they put this place together. Very smart. There is ton of space for study groups, meet ups, etc. Capuccino-perfect. I didn't even put sugar in it and I don't drink cappuccinos. I don't know what possesed me to get one, but after one I was hooked. Delish!

Oh, and the chocolate macaroons! phenom! This is from an avid chocolate taster. I mean I travel to specific places just to eat chocolate. They were better than Godivas Chocolate Macaroons. (im not a Godiva fan, but their macaroons rock) and since they are half the price, thier a keeper!

Now, when it comes to pastries Im not easy to please. And they didn't do anything for me. I had the blueberry croissant and it was crunch on the outside but undercooked on the inside. And the other tarts look like they need to be baked just a little more. But I also haven't tried much so Im not rating them on thier pastries. Atmosphere for a good study locatiion and wonderful coffee And SERVICE. The Girls are wonderful and the owner is very nice as well.

Toorak is great. They make beautiful, tasty, flaky, just-sweet-enough pastries. The cinnamon twist is just wonderful.

Their coffee is superb. It's never burned, always light, fluffy, and flavorful. I don't know how that comes across, but Toorak makes great coffee. Somehow they are able to simultaneously combine rich flavor with a gentle, delicate texture. The coffee never feels harsh like Starbucks' can. This is the best coffee in Long Beach!

Toorak has a student discount, as well, which is awesome. The staff is friendly. Free wifi. This is also one of the few places in the U.S. where you can find something resembling the beloved Australian meat pie.

I would go here everyday if my wallet allowed...

Update: Got the "flat white", an espresso with milk, no foam. Very smooth.

The people who own/run this place are very friendly! I went twice this week, and both times, I had coffee and a warmed-up croissant, which was delicious. I like the way the shop is set up, with comfortable leather chairs, an eclectic mix of music, and a hip-yet-down-to-earth vibe. This is a great place for CSULB students. There's a big table with leather ottoman chairs scattered around it--perfect for group discussions.

Not bad for my first time around here.  I was thrilled with the prospect of having some authentic euro-style coffee.  My caffe latte was just how I liked it--pretty foam design, drinkable with a spoon, and strong.

Decor was minimalist-modern, but translated the company brand very well in their wall art and color scheme.  I read on Yelp that this is an Australian chain, so go them for branding themselves properly.

Service was good (girls behind the bar were really nice), and the music playing was a great selection of lounge and ambient, to jam rock and even some Bob Dylan mixed in.  Volume was at a proper level so you could either do work on a laptop and zone out, or carry on a nice convo with a friend.

Only real con - I'd up the A/C a bit because it got a little toasty in there after a while.

I'm definitely coming back to try some of their yummy pastries and other food next time.  Got to have a sample of one of their berry danishes -- made me wish I hadn't had brunch elsewhere prior to coming here!

This place has single-handedly flipped that minimall from "let's do errands and get out of here as quickly as possible" to "let's stop by and regenerate ourselves with some quality coffee."

Who knew that good coffee existed outside the confines of 4th street? Toorak breathes new life into the area, and for once I am glad that the spot wasn't occupied by the typical chain.

The interior itself is modern industrial, but in the end one doesn't go to a coffee shop for free wifi or plenty of table space, so how was the coffee? Quite flavorful, the baristas know their lingo and techniques, and go the extra mile by bringing you your pastry/sandwhich of choice to your table with real silverware. They always seem friendly and relaxed and by osmosis you end up leaving friendly and relaxed as well!

The lack of a medium size for iced drinks and no frequent buyer program is what kept me from giving it the ole five stars, but apart from that this place is a true nugget.

My first thought when I entered here about a month ago was "this would be perfect for the knitting group".  We've been there twice and it was great.

Now for Toorak itself the sandwiches are good and decently sized, not too huge or small, on good bread.  I've had their minestrone soup and liked it.  The pastries and desserts are the best.  Toorak is becoming are regular stop for me - even without knitting.

The vibe is modern mixed with fancy which kind of gives an empty feeling but Jazz night always shakes things up.

Great espresso and drinks - their new drip coffee makes the place complete!

Had an interesting interaction with the assistant manager - I caught him singing to his latte behind the counter and then he tried doing the moon walk past the blender.

Next time I go in, i'm trying the Aussie meat pie.  Good, fun employees that make the place happier and the espresso is fantastic.

I met a friend here who loves this place. Sadly to say, I didn't share those same feelings. I love all things pesto, so I ordered a chicken pesto sandwich. It just tasted funny to me. I don't know if it was the homemade bread, the chicken, or the pesto, but something did not taste right. I usually could finish my meal even if it doesn't taste that great, but I couldn't finish my sandwich.

Too clean and modern for the hipsters, too hipster for the yuppies and all american middle class people that frequent this lot, who does Toorak appeal to? People who can appreciate a good espresso and a sandwich, that's who. Standard coffee shop fare with delicious coffee drinks. This place has plenty of space for studying and is always sparkly clean.

I've only been here once and my first experience was great. There was great service and the worker recommended me a mocha latte, which was delicious. I was happy to have found a good coffee shop what wasn't starbucks. The only problem I have with this place is that fact that it randomly closes when it clearly states on its window that it doesn't close until 7 (something like that). I drove to toorak twice, wanting some more latte and twice in a row it was just closed with no note stating why or anything when it was suppose to be open. So that was a waste of my time and I would end up at the Rite Aid next door to grab some ice cream instead!

I'm extremely grateful that such a nice coffee house with free wi fi opened up just down the street from my son's school.  Very nice place, especially considering its ultra-lame, suburban location, but I'm so glad I don't have to suffer through the awful coffee and hate myself for supporting a corporate chain by going to the Coffee Bean or Starbuck$ that are also in the vicinity.  The coffee (though it's all espresso, which is a fine thing) is good, the one pastry I tried was not bad, though not worth repeating.  I like the huge space, high ceilings, semi-industrial feel, concrete floor and all.  Shows some LBC cache when a place like this can set up in the hinterlands...

The pastries are to die for . . .  Absolutely delicious.  I highly recommend the chocolate croissant and I am normally not a huge chocolate fan.  The lattes are great, the only thing missing is actual coffee.

Want to try a piece of Australia, but in Long Beach? That's right...who knew a city where Snoop Dogg was from could also birth a place for Australian inspired cafe food? Well try "Toorak" in the Los Altos Shopping Center. I went with a couple friends for a study group and this venue is an ideal study spot because the music isn't too loud and there were many seating areas to accommodate groups both big and small. I tried the chocolate croissant and the cheese danish along with a mango smoothie...and crikey they were good! The pastries were $2.25 each plus tax which is $2.47...not bad eh-mate? So drive on down to Long Beach because it is never too late for "Toorak!"

Going for  sleek post modern look-something that would be common place in Munich or Hong Kong has come to Los Altos--well done! First the coffee is excellent, certainly on par with coffee Bean or Starbucks..the sandwhiches are fantastic (try the tuna)--suspected they would be dry but was proven wrong-excellent bread!  Great music selection over the speakers and an atmosphere that will keep people coming back for sure.

Went in once, looking for a sandwhich place.  It looks like a great place to study, the decor is very catchy and modern.  The food though, is not what I expect for the price.  The chicken is the kind you buy at Trader Joe's that is frozen and already cooked.  I think for those prices you can get FRESH good tasting food, and unfortunately thats not what Toorak provides.

Upon first stepping into this cafe, I was quite impressed.  The decor was very spacious and inviting; very modern.  The arrangement of pastries in the display case was also eye-catching.  As for the workers, they were very friendly, if a bit frantic (I assumed that that was because I ordered quite a few items).

The taste of the pastries, however, was mediocere at best; it's wonderful if you don't want your pastries too sweet (I could taste the flour more than anything), but otherwise, don't spend money on it.  With that said, the pastries still tasted better than the sandwich (I had the avocado one).  The sandwich was extremely cold (even after I told them to heat it up), and it was very bland-tasting.  I could have made a home-made salmon and avocado sandwich that tasted better!  And five bucks for that -- ridiculous!

I've been there twice, and both times, I've ordered about five items, and both times, they managed to forget to give me one of the five items, though they did charge me for it.  They weren't even that busy; in fact, I was the only customer ordering.

    very cute coffee shop!

the decorations are simple, but it works well with the colors, lightiing, and tall ceilings.

i ordered the white chocolate mocha - some kind of amazing! :) and the pastries looked really good - i'll have to try them next time!

the staff were really nice and helpful as well!

i'm glad that the los altos shopping center finally has a place like this!

I've been meaning to try this place since it opened and I finally made it a point to head over for a coffee this morning.  Super stoked to see that they have a flat white, I've only ever had them in Australia and I love them with some of the raw sugar added,  it's awesome to be able to walk around the corner and get one now.
The place itself is bright and clean and we sat at the large table in the middle and read the newspaper, it was really comfortable and relaxing.  They also had samples of the cheese danish that we tried and were sold on, they are delicious and we will definitely be back.
