Bare bones place.
I like their meat and bread better than the Hat, so I'm a fan. The biggest downside is location and hours of operation. -

Great food! Lots of choices from regular sandwiches to their skyscraper MONSTERS!!
Avoid the lunch rush though. It gets loud and crowded. There really is not place to stand and wait for your order. People just gather at random places and it can be a bit slow sometimes. Its worth the wait but can be a bit frustrating if you are hungry and/or alone.
Also beware i've had some "extra" tip added to my receipt before... so make sure you don't leave it blank. This didn't affect my rating because a bad apple shouldn't affect the whole restaurants rating.. plus i think that person is gone. -

ordered the beef brisket halfer. expected it to be on the small side, but it's not. I was glad I didn't decide on the next size up. They're having a brown bag deal for students at this location. You get any halfer, any side, and a drink for a good price.
the dip makes the sandwich savory and flavorful. I recommend their fries, although they are a bit too salty. -
Review from Lica N.
Pastrami here is good. Still doesn't compare to the best, Katz Delicatessan in NYC with their humongous portions. Oh so yummy.
I've been here a few times now and I like it. I came a few weeks ago after work and didn't realize they closed at 5pm. It's in a commercial area and so once the offices are closed there isn't very many people around to stay open. They close at 3 on the weekends.
Anywhoooo back to the food. I got the combo which comes with fries and a drink. You have a choice of getting your sandwich in 3 sizes. The Original (overstuffed), The Lite (piled high) and The Halfer (half of an Original). Bread choices are NY Rye, French Roll, White and Wheat.
I went with the Lite on Rye. I luuuuv Rye bread, so much so that I like my grilled cheese to be made with Rye. I changed up my fries to chilli fries for an extra charge. So I would describe their Pastrami to be on the mild side of the flavor scale and the cut to be more lean than fatty. Don't get me wrong, I like fatty stronger seasoned peppery tasting pastrami. Just want to heed warning for those who prefer a more seasoned pastrami that it might be a bit bland. Their deli mustard is a bit more on the vinegary side but good. Their chili is not made with your usual ground beef but with pieces/chuncks of pastrami in them. I think they just chop up the ends and stir them in. It didn't have any heat but it was good.
My eyes were bigger than my tummy again. Next time I will be good with the Halfer.Listed in: Oh Sammie!

whats not to love?
The Pastrami! The Corned Beef! The Brisket! -All great.
I work nearby and They are fast for lunch and reasonably priced too. I have been to "the hat" many times and like it, but Tommy's Pastrami is way better, and they have corned beef and brisket too.
The "halfer" is just right if you don't want a big lunch. -

I just discovered Tommy Pastrami Delicatessen located on the border of Costa Mesa and Santa Ana. I have to say it was the best pastrami sandwich I had in years. I liked so much that I will have Tommy Pastrami Deli cater to my office occasionally.
I hope they deliver. -

Upon arriving, I expected to be amazed by their pastrami sandwich considering the place is called "Tommy Pastrami". As I took my first bite, I thought to myself "Meh. I've experienced better." A true statement in the form of two stars. I'll explain.
It wasn't disgusting or anything, but it definitely wasn't the best pastrami sandwich I've ever had. I've had better pastrami sandwiches at The Hat & Gina's Pizza. Maybe my pastrami expectations are too high? No idea, but I'm pretty sure good food is supposed to be flavorful. The pastrami was a little bland compared to other places. Even though their sandwiches are packed with more meat than others, it hardly makes it any better. Sad to say, but the best thing that this sandwich had going was the bread itself. I chose the rye. It was thin, soft and held up to the mass amount of pastrami...that was...flavorless *grumble grumble*.
The sandwiches are way overpriced as well. Sure they're generous with the portions of meat they stuff in your sandwiches, but yeah I already said it. Otherwise, I'd have no problem paying a hefty amount.
I'd consider coming back here to try the other sandwiches. If I need a pastrami fix though, I'll go elsewhere. -

The hot pastrami sandwich was ok. Prices were a bit high for what we got. My Cole slaw came with a free hair. Service was ok.

I tried the pastrami a couple of times but anytime I am visiting a client in the neighborhood I am coming for the corned beef on Rye with the coleslaw. The half size is all I can eat. The mustard is amazing.
I wish there was a Tommy Pastrami closer to home!!!! -

Me: Hell yeah?
Co-worker: Hell, efff yeah.
That's basically what my co-worker told me before we got Tommy Pastrami. The price was a little bit on the "high" side, but when I saw my pastrami sandwich, "Hell efff yeah!!!" Now THIS is a sandwich. It's so big and filled with soooo much meat. Man, I'm starting to salivate just thinking about it. The best pastrami sandwich I have ever eaten. Period. -

I'd seen this place for awhile, and expected it to go the way of Puffy's or Poofy's or whatever that other place was--one day I'd drive by, and it would be gone. Selling New York sandwiches in Southern California? Seemed like a big gamble. But it stuck around, and even more surprisingly, got excellent reviews here on Yelp. Now I HAD to try it, to see what everyone was raving about.
First I tried the pastrami, I mean, it's Tommy Pastrami! I was a bit, just a bit, underwhelmed...while the meat was good and fatty (everywhere else is too damn lean!) I couldn't taste any smoke or pepper flavor, and pastrami should be permeated with it! That's the difference between corned beef and pastrami! Instead, the pastrami tastes like a really, really good corned beef. Sadly, they only had little ground pepper packets, no fresh-ground to add. But they did have Ba-Tempte mustard...and as an absolute mustard FIEND, I have to give them their fifth star for that alone.
Next I tried the brisket. Now, I've never had a "brisket" sandwich...I have had eaten more than my fair share of French dips and Italian beefs, however, and this put those to shame. By itself, the well-done, thin-sliced beef was on the dry side...but dipped in the au jus...my god. Hands down the best beef sandwich I've in California, and it beats 98% of the Chicago-style beefs I've had, French or Italian or whatever you want to call it. The au jus is salty, meaty, and dare I say a hint--just a hint--of garlic to make it rival the best Italian beefs? Add some giardinara, and I'd be back on Chicago's North Side stuffing my face.
Foolishly, the happy glow from brisket led me to try the corned beef in the excitement of discovery. BAD. BAD BAD. The corned beef is almost exactly like the super-cheap, super-lean crappy supermarket "corned beef" (read: pickled processed meat-byproduct loaf) I used to get when I was broker than dirt. I ended up eating the delicious French bread and skipping the meat, which considering the size of the sandwiches was a huge loss.
If you want corned beef, get the pastrami.
If you want pastrami, get it to go and add your own fresh-cracked pepper. It won't be perfect, but it helps. Immensely.
If you want the best beef sandwich west of the Mississippi, get the brisket with au jus, and prepare to moan like Sally. It's THAT GOOD, people.
The sandwiches aren't cheap, but you get your money's worth, over a half pound of meat on each. I weighed my brisket...over 11 oz of meat alone. I couldn't eat the whole thing. -

Thanks for all the Provolone Cheese Fries... you made my days at AI a lot better!
I'm just sad that you close so early cause I never seem to be in that area except in the evenings. -

I cannot believe I work within 5 mins walking distance to this place and I've never tried it before, til now. Didn't know what I was missing out! I read the reviews and it did live up to my expectations, and more.
There's not just pastramis here, but an array of other items; hot dogs, coffee, salads, muffins, other cold sandwiches (sorry, I was only looking at the pastrami hehe). They have different sizes, kind of like small, medium and large. "lite" is their version of small. You also have a choice of what kind of bread you want it on; rye or sourdough roll.
I ordered their Lite combo on rye; pastrami, drink and my option of fries (you can choose from cole slaw, chili etc.). The sandwich was hot and delicious with the meat tender and just right. PLENTY of meat on there, even for their lite size. Comes with a side of mustard, if you're taking it to go, or you can grab a bottle of it if you're eating in and use as much as you desire. A whole pickle also comes with your order on the side. Not just half, but a whole pickle. It was a good pickle as well, crunchy and good =)
There are plenty of seating inside and out. Although it does get crowded at peak hours and I wish they would have designed the area a little bit different as the area to pay/order and get your food is very small so theres very little room to navigate and what not.
Bill came out to be 9 and something in change for the combo =\ one things for sure though, its not good for the wallet! if you eat here all the time.
Best pastrami I have had so far. BTW, they have non sweaty cups (if you know what kind of refering to =p) for their fountain drinks ...SCORRRE! -

So I was super hungry one day and ordered the Original Pastrami Sandwich and a side of fries. Mind you, I've never been here before and I thought that the "Lite" size would be too dinky for me, but boy, was I wrong.
The portions are HUGE here. wow-o-wow. I was set for lunch and dinner that day. The total came up to be $11 incl. tax, but definitely worth the money.
The taste? From reading all the reviews, I was expecting something "magical" to happen but it's okay - it was one delicious sandwich and I stuffed myself silly eating just 1/2 of the sandwich for lunch.
If I want a really good pastrami sandwich, I know exactly where to go now. -
Review from Laura L.

Okay, maybe I just don't "get" NY cuisine, but I am not really impressed by this place. I love sandwiches, but I like my sandwiches loaded with all the fixins'. That being said, I was a little disappointed when I ordered a beef brisket lite and got 5 oz. of meat (good meat, but a little bland) slapped between two slices of bread. Not warm bread, not toasted bread, just bread. That's it.
Ummm...seriously? I could have done that myself. I SHOULD have done that myself. So, shame on me for ordering what I did.
I might go back and try something else if I feel like consuming 5-8 oz of meat in one sitting. -

My favorite - hands down - the pastrami sandwich: this is the BEST PASTRAMI sandwich I have ever had. I used to eat this for lunch once a week! Yes, so bad for you but soooo good!

They are serious when they stay 'overstuffed' sandwiches. I went with my brother and we ended up splitting a 'jumbo' (whole) pastrami sandwich and an order of 'jumbo' chili cheese fries. The pastrami was good, the fresh rye bread was delicious and the crust was crunchy, and the 'jumbo' chili cheese fries was way too much to eat (I prefer skinny rather than fat fries, more fried surface area).
They are even open for breakfast. I was curious as to whether they actually served breakfast food or if people really came in for pastrami that early in the day! Turns out they do have some breakfast, hehe.Listed in: OC Restaurants

I love this place. The turkey halfer is great. You get a generous amount of turkey in a half sandwich. The pickles are amazing and I hate pickles but these converted me. Great steak fries. A little pricey but it's quality food. I can never go back to subway after this place.

Best item is the brisket! GREAT!
Tender, rich beefy essence, moist, and a generous portion. Au Jus for dipping is rich and flavorful. I recommend the French roll, not the rye bread since the roll works better for dipping.
The rye bread is very good, but the crust is sometimes thick and tough to chew through.
Chicken soup is delicious, tastes homemade with big chunks of soft veg, noodles and chicken.
I would avoid the Matzah ball option. The interior is coarse and tasted oddly starchy. Not good. Try Arnie's Deli over by John Wayne for much better Matzah balls.
Pastrami is juicy and well marbled, but very bland, under salted (it's supposed to be SALT CURED!). It's like the outside had been scrubbed and washed. There was virtually none of the peppery salty smoky exterior you associated with good pastrami. Instead the exterior was just colored black.
I would recommend getting the pastrami on the French roll just to keep the rye bread from overwhelming the taste of the pastrami. Same problem with the table mustard which is very sour and tends to completely blot out any pastrami flavor.
Potato salad is the WORST I have ever had, they throw all kinds of junk in it such as Eggs, Sweet Pickles, Green and Black Olives, Dill Weed, and so on. Yuck!
Fried potato wedges look good.
Very quick service.
Only little packets of salt/pepper (for takeout customers), no shakers, a pain for eating in.
Prices on the high side but ok given the high quality. -

Tommy Pastrami is a huge step up from the coffee shop that used to be in this location. Business is booming during lunch hour. I've never been impressed with the service. The cashiers are rude and unfriendly, but food service is pretty quick.
The food is tasty and portions are enormous. I've had their coffee a number of times, it's not their specialty and if the wrong person is working the espresso bar, theres no telling what strange beverage you will end up with. Stick to the sandwiches, you won't be disappointed. -

Santa Ana, CA
Met my boss at Tommy Pastrami for lunch today. He had been there before, I hadn't.
The layout of the place is a little strange. You can tell they made themselves fit into an existing space rather than create a space for themselves. There are two counters, the one you need to order at is all the way in the back. Just seemed like an odd setup.
I ordered the bbq brisket sandwich combo with potato salad. The brisket was tender and tasty. But, they serve the bbq on the side--I would have liked it much better if the sliced brisket had been coated in bbq sauce. And the bbq sauce itself was very sweet and thick. The potato salad was good.
The service was adequate for a deli counter. It's not that hard to take an order then call out a number when its ready. They were friendly and our food came out right.
The pastrami looked really good too. I'll be back to give it a try. -

Way overpriced for what you get!
Yah, it's a lot of meat in a sandwich...woopdeedoo! NOT the first place to come up with that idea, and definitely not the best.
Maybe I've been spoiled after eating at 2nd Ave deli in New York, and Carnegie deli in Las Vegas. Tommy's just didn't do it for me. I had the pastrami which was dry. The wife had brisket which was bland. And our friend had the phillie cheesesteak, which was ok.
Coming from a meatlover, not worth it at all. -

Delicious!
My boss recommended this place and i talked her into taking all the employees out for a "team bonding" lunch. She did, and we did. We bonded over the yumminess that was the beef at this place. Everyone got something different and everyone loved what they got. I got the beef brisket dip. Never have i had au jus so tasty and garlic-y before. The fries are delicious and the portions are huge. luckily, you can order half meat and half sandwich so you don't necessarily HAVE to stuff your face.
You get a choice between rye and French bread. My boss chose the rye for me and i was pissed because i hate rye bread . . . usually. This bread was great. Perfect texture and slightly toasted. They are really efficient here and get the food out ASAP. I would highly recommend this place even if you think you dont like pastrami or brisket. Its gooood! -

This place is one of the better places to get some brisket sandwich with au jus. Almost as good as Langers in LA but at like half the price. Moreover, their portions come in huge and huge-r lol. And lastly, the student discount makes the place so worth the money - a little over six dollars for a sandwich, a side (you must try their chili), and a can of soda - definitely can't beat that deal.

My cousin from New york (who now lives in KY) was visiting a me about two years ago, he called and said, "Get over here NOW!" The food is just like that in New York. Boy was he right!
The food at Tommy pastrami is some of the best NY deli food available in Southern California, aside from Brent's Deli in Northridge. the Rye Bread is to die for and the meats are outstanding..... Corned Beef, Pastrami and the turkey.... oh the turkey!!!!! The Fries are amazing, try the chili cheese fries (OH MY G-D!) as is the Chili by itself, made with beef tips..it is slightly spicy! The Cole slaw is a great topper to any of the sandwiches.
However, the Piece de resistance is the Chopped liver (when available). We always get some to take home with rye heels! Nothing like it anywhere except at my grandmothers house.
the matzo ball soup is good, but nothing compares to Jerry's Deli Matzo ball soup!
The staff is typical NY no nonsense but friendly. If Tommy is around he will be more than happy to chat with you and tell you how all his ingredients are the best which is why they are a little more expensive, but in my opinion, worth it! The chain is expanding right now and doing very well..... -

I don't know how I've never tried this place before, it's GREAT!
Thinly sliced pastrami with a peppery crust STACKED between warm, soft, moist rye bread w/ a side of creamy dijon mustard. I had mine with au jus just because everything is better with au jus, it was deeelicious!
They also have 4 different types of iced teas here which is a HUGE plus, I loved the black tea. I will definitely be back to try the corned beef and brisket sandwiches!Listed in: The Best Thing I Ever Ate, CHEAP EATS IN THE OC

Holy crap this place is good. I honestly think pastrami sandwiches are better when the cuts are thicker. I don't know what it is, and I know you pastrami purists will call it blasphemy, but I just think thicker = better. With pretty much everything in food... and life!
But seriously for the price you can't beat Tommy Pastrami. For an equivalent at Langer's in L.A. (famous deli) a sandwich is literally like $12.
The rye bread is just so rye-perfect, and the coleslaw is awesome. Even their fries are good and seasoned just right. I am craaaaaaaaaaaving a sammich right now!! -

Plenty of parking, indoor and outdoor seating. For my first time visit today, I ordered the Jumbo NY Reuben with Potato Salad, Grilled Cheese with Fries and a drink. At first I felt it was a little pricey at approx $20 bucks for that. the order took about 10 minutes and wow was I impressed with the amount of pastrami stuffed into the sandwich. With some spicy mustard, rye, cheese and sour kraut, this sandwich was hot and juicy! I normally do not like pastrami sandwiches with kraut but this sandwich made me love it. I had to wash it down with some really good sweetened Green tea.
Everything we ordered today was excellent. Id give it 5 stars but due to price and the fact that I haven't tried other items yet. -

As someone who has lived in NY --I love that this place is literally right next door to my office. Located in a business park off of Harbor Blvd, you will find many of my colleagues and I are here during the most stressful and busiest days as it is walking distance and fast! We also order in for big lunch meetings... and their pastrami sandwich on rye is always the first sandwich that people grab!
Generously portioned, I guarantee you will be full just by ordering a "lite" sandwich. I am always impressed by how much pastrami they pile on! Their french fries--YUM! They are large steak fries with just the perfect amount of seasoning salt.
I checked in today and tried a somewhat new speciality that they have which included pastrami and coleslaw wrapped in a tortilla. Because I was not incredibly hungry, this was the perfect amount for my lunchtime pastrami craving--highly recommend it!
They also have a decent selection of drinks, and if you love iced teas, they have several unsweetened and flavored iced teas. Great coffees in the morning, and even a selection italian sodas. -
Review from Trevor T.
Bring your appetite to this place! They have the largest, delicious pastrami sandwiches in California. As they say, "It's all about the meat!" These sandwiches are stuffed full of meat - at least the pastrami is and that's all I ever eat here.
A basic deli menu consists of hot and cold sandwiches, soup, burgers and dogs, salads and fries. -
Review from Ron H.

Hm, I swore I wrote a review here before. Guess it was my imagination.
The food can be pretty good. The first time was the best for me. The bread was absolutely perfect. Since then though, the bread's varied from poor to average. The worst was when it was chewy and tough. My chef friend claims that's due to exposing the bread to an abundance of moisture or something like that. No idea.
Anyway, enough about the bread. The meats are pretty good. I didn't even really like pastrami all that much. I've eaten at the Hat, and just didn't really care for it. But when I had it here, I actually liked it. I've tried mixing it up every time I go, and most come away well. The cold deli sandwich wasn't all that great, though.
Price is a bit on the high end, but you will be served a lot. Fries are meh. -

TOMMY. DAMN YOU. DAMN TOMMY.
He made me like pastrami.
I hated the stuff. It made me sick. I used to be happy looking down at those who raved about it. Then...then you--Tommy. You screwed it all up. I heard you had this good thing going in your little business park strip mall. I'm a gambler. I rolled the dice and you took me for all I had.
The pastrami on rye is as good as it gets folks. I LOVE THE HAT. But NOT for pastrami. I love their burgers. Tommy wins hands down for best pastrami I have ever had. And here is something very few people talk about.
Tommy will serve you some of the best French Fries you ever have. Steak fries so fresh--not greasy--but damn great. His Italian Cold Cut is also out of the park--just get it with the oil dressing (in a styrofoam cup on the side)--with all that good salty flavor--the dip is amazing.
Well Tommy. There you go. You won. And that's OK by me. -
Review from Clifton S.

I must be more of a fatty compared to some of the reviews here, I on the contrary think that this place gives you tiny portions for what you pay for.
Pastrami: It was tender and sliced razor thin. Any kind of deli meat sliced razor thin is always great in my book! but the pastrami had a very mild taste, it required a generous dousing of deli mustard (which is WEAK and too vinegary) for some added flavor. I HIGHLY suggest you order a side of au jus, it's all the drippings that the pastrami is cooked in, it honestly takes the sandwich to the NEXT level. The au jus is heavy on oil and leaves a thick and satisfying taste of cow on the palette. If it weren't for the au jus, this sandwich falls flat.
Portions: My biggest gripe are the portions. I spent 10 bucks on just a sandwich and a drink (original pastrami) and the portions looked very similar to the "lite" version of the sandwich that my coworker ordered. My other coworkers ordered the one with double the meat, but that looked meager at best.
Verdict: This place isn't worth the money. All you are getting are probably less than 6 oz of BLAND pastrami on top of BLAND bread (common, how can you get rye bread wrong??). I could've EASILY made this at home with store bought pastrami and it would've surpassed Tommy's pastrami.
Probably won't come back here, the small portions and bland taste doesn't justify the high price.
Try Mother's market for a great homemade deli sandwich that surpasses Tommys in quality, quantity, and price. -

This place happened to be close by to my brother's job. He had never eaten here, but heard good things about this place. Let's just say it was pretty delicious. (: We didn't know what to order, so the cashier suggested we'd each get one of their best sandwiches (a pastrami and a brisket)- that way we can both have half of each. We got them on French rolls and came with auju sauce on the side. When we received our order, our meals looked SO GOOD and tasted SO much better than good! The cut of meat of the pastrami was super lean, but as for the brisket, it had quite a bit of fatty pieces that I had to pull out of my sandwich. I don't think I'd order the brisket again.

I'm torn between The Hat and Tommy's for the world's best pastrami. Tommy make some great "sandwiches" but I like The Hat's Pastrami just a LITTLE better (it might have to do with the bread though) either way you HAVE to try this place, it's AWESOME
Order Half a sandwich because it is HUGE!!!! but I got the Philly Cheese Steak one time, it was pretty good, not the best PCS I've had, but it was good enough (skimping on the meat on this sandwich though) -

One of the best pastrami sandwiches in town. They pile on the meat and make it right on rye bread but you can pick other breads if you choose as well. Also try the chicken noodle soup which tastes like something your mom would spend the whole day cooking in her kitchen.
Tommy's isn't cheap but it's worth it if you like pastrami done right. -

they don't serve sandwiches. They sell pounds of meat with a bit of bread stuck on the sides. Don't even attempt the full sandwiches unless you are really hungry.
The cost is higher than the average sandwich shops but this isn't an average sandwich shop.
