San Jose, CA
DON'T come here if you're looking for a place that has those big fancy rolls smothered in 5 different kinds of sauces. They don't got none o' dat!
I hear this place is Japanese-owned, and I can tell they're trying to stick to their roots by offering the more traditional items on their menu (nigiri, sashimi, chirashi, bento, teriyaki, donburi, udon, etc).
I got the lunch combo with tonkatsu and sashimi (salmon and tuna), which is served with rice, soup, and salad. The salmon was fresh (I gave the tuna to my boyfriend so I'm not sure about that), and the tonkatsu was nice and crunchy, but not dry. The portions are okay-sized; I would say that Harumi Sushi in Cupertino is more generous. But for $9.90, my lunch combo was a steal!
My only gripe would be that the salad dressing lacked in flavor. But oh well, not everyone/thing is perfect! -
Review from Mona W.
Tried their sushi omakase this time. I was quite surprised the server actually come to take our order even though we were seated at the sushi bar. I guess the restaurant has adapted to the western way.
The special miso soup was really good. I love the fish fillets they put in there. The bones were a bit troublesome to work with but I wasn't too discouraged.
The omakase came with 11 pieces of nigiri, negitoro maki and a piece of their lovely tamago. The kanpachi and hamachi were great. Chu toro and hamachi belly were wonderful. The uni was as notorious as usual and that was really no surprise. I don't understand why such a great sushi joint can't source some nicer uni.
Price was on the expensive side considering how ordinary the cuts were. Quality was decent but for this price range I might prefer other sushi joints. Their ala carte white board specials were far more attractive. The whole aji sashimi certainly looked wonderful.Listed in: Japanese Restaurants, My Favorite Lunch Spot, Sushi and Sashimi

Fresh sashimi! Attentive and friendly service!
We tried the extra special sashimi plate (the highlights being the toro, uni, and sweet shrimp) and the sushi dinner (tuna roll and 9 pieces nigiri). Everything was well presented, and tasted really fresh! The cuts of sashimi were decent!
Nice, cute little restaurant next to Mitsuwa supermarket. Come check it out if you're in the area! :] -

Redondo Beach, CA
Hand down one of the best sushi bars in San Jose! The seating is cramped, the wait is long, and the prices are a little high...but the fish is really fresh! Sweet shrimp, toro, salmon, yellowtail, Uni, all top quality! I normally order the chefs omakase or extra special sashimi. The eel roll, tomi special roll, and the spider roll are really good. I didn't care for the cooked foods, thought it was okay but not spectacular. I think the Tomi Sushi in Mountain View serves better cooked foods. But if you want sushi, this is the place to go!
if it wasn't for the limited seating and long wait, this would be a 5 star place! -

They have the best and freshest sushi in the San Jose area. Try their Tomi Special and Beef Delight. They are REALLY good. Also, they have really good free green tea ice cream.

Review from Julie N.
It took a lot of willpower for me to come here instead of Kahoo Ramen. It took almost as much willpower for me to not tell the waitress I changed my mind and wouldn't be dining there... yes, I admit it! I considered it!
I ain't a hater. It's just that as far as Strawberry Park and pimin' go, Kahoo is my bottom bitch.
She still is, but now I just have a new friend... named Tomi. Tomi's cute, sweet, and I can bring her home to meet my momzuh. She's a giver; she spoils me (with free tea, edamame, and even green tea ice cream!) and pays me a lot of attention. She's good but.... yes, there's a but... I've had better. Tastier. More memorable. Fresher x_X
My friend and I tag-teamed Tomi (another x_X) and had a few rolls and the tempura udon. I thought the tempura udon was the best part of the meal. The mushrooms in the broth stood out and the broth was really salty (which I liked!). It was mostly soy sauce I'm sure, but I still liked it. The tempura pieces were okay, nothing too special. The portion was small and may not even be enough for just one person. The rolls were fine as well. I think Tomi has a reputation of having the best quality fish but I wasn't blown away by what we got. I also felt slightly annoyed at the $12.90 price tags.
Tomi's a sweetheart but the passion just isn't there. She's perfect on paper, but sometimes things don't work out that easily. Being inside her (X_X !!!!!) was cool but it wasn't the real deal. I was stealing peeks out the window at my quirkier girl, Kahoo the whole time...
haha sorry if my sense of humor offends you. -
Review from Mimi L.

Uhm, I'm a huge fan of sushi... and this place was horrid. It's crampy small... portions are small & they are expensive, well at least for what you're getting, it's pretty darn expensive. Kahoo was right next door and it took so much out of me to not want to waltz next door for a real meal half the price I paid for one roll. I was so disappointed because everyone on here was saying it's delicious, but I left half hungry and grumpy... never again will I come here. It felt like I was eating an overpriced snack...

2.5 stars. positive mainly bc of the ambiance and we had a gift certificate.
there was a slight wait, which is fine i don't really mind waiting. there's a bar area by the sushi chefs and then some tables. not a huge place, probably not good for groups larger than 6.
really wanted to like this place. for starters we got agedashi tofu -- which we got late, was over-fried, and not typical agedashi style. also got croquette (they have 3 types, we got regular, but they also have octopus and shrimp cream), which was also over-fried, and just tasted like a slightly better hashbrown (more fried than potato).
not many vegetarian options (not that i expected it) - avocado rolls were good (though i've only seen this order messed up once in my life), the futomaki was whatever (not well-made, way too much rice, falling apart etc).
my bf ordered a bunch of different rolls and he wasn't very impressed -- granted he's super picky about seafood, and he usually comments on freshness if it's particularly fresh. they DO have fresh oysters, but they were completely out. that probably would've brought the rating up on my bf's end at least.
it is pretty pricey on top of that. based on the reviews i'm seeing, we might've accidentally left before being offered green tea ice cream lol.
free hot tea though! might stop by for oysters with bf sometime while we're at mitsuwa or kahoo's. -
Review from Karen K.
San Francisco, CA
This place is across the hall from my beloved Kahoo and I do love my sushi. We went in on a whim early-ish on a Friday night (6:45, yeah yeah).
The place is small and bustling. It is definitely not chi chi pretentious sushi as there were a few families with (well behaved) small children.
I ordered the extra special sushi and the bf ordered the combination with sashimi and teriyaki.
The extra special sushi came with uni (hearted), a negi toro roll, and a couple of fresh and high quality nigiri (sashimi pieces on sushi rice): unagi, bluefin tuni, sweet shrimp, etc.
Sushi/sashimi purists may sniff at the concept of the combination, but that's the appeal here. If you don't love sushi and sashimi, there are plenty of options for you so that you don't feel left out.
Starting with a small thing of free edamame and finishing off with green tea ice cream on the house just made the experience that much more awesome.
So glad I have another go to place in my convenient eats line up. -

Tomi Sushi FTW !
This place is the definitely one of the BEST place to eat Japanese food ! !
The quality and freshness of their seafood is unbelievable and their prices are reasonable !
I like to come here and get their lunch combo. (I'm not sure how it's properly called and the accurate price) I remember it was around $10 and then you would get miso soup, TWO kinds of main dish (i usually get sashimi and the teriyaki) with rice, a slice of orange, and a salad too!
Best deal ever!!!!
Last time I ate here for dinner and I got a complimentary scoop of green tea ice cream. How cool is that :) !
Cause of its quality and awesomeness, the place gets pretty crowded during dinner time, so, be prepared to make a reservation or you'll have to wait in line ! -
Review from Annie C.
Cupertino, CA
I was almost reluctant to give Tomi Sushi 5 stars, only because I feared giving them a high rating would result in more customers (good for them, bad for me) and a longer wait time to get sat since they are usually super packed and you end up on the waiting list. But 5 stars they get, because 5 stars is what they deserve.
Tomi Sushi is my go to place for japanese in the south bay. They really make me...h a p p y. I always always order their california rolls because the crab mix is made with real crab and amazing as hell. They also have a shrimp cream croquette that I order every single time because it's worth the money. I'd have to admit that this place is a bit pricey but if food can really make you happy, come here for it!
Next: Their fish is fresh and the quality is good. They have an extensive menu and amazing lunch specials. Every time I visit, I leave full and happy. Their udon is also incredible, and their combo dinners come with heavy portions.
On the service side, there is this one guy who is a super hard worker and a wonderful waiter. Don't know his name but he's the one with the eyebrow ring who's really respectful and quick. Hideki, the little older waitress is adorable as hell and the sushi chefs are extra friendly.
5 stars for Tomi! :) Tomi, tomi, tomi! *dancing* -

Bump (to 5 stars)!
Tomi Sushi has replaced all other sushi restaurants in the area as my family's go-to japanese restaurant for when I come home.
I have yet to be disappointed by the quality of food and the service at this restaurant. The waiter/waitresses are always super friendly and attentive, and extremely patient considering how hectic this small restaurant gets.
If you want to come for a weekend dinner, make SURE to make reservations, or else you'll be waiting for a lonnngggg time.
For lunch, their bento boxes are an excellent deal, and they give you a ton of sashimi for the cost. (their salmon is deeeelicious)
Their amaebe is good too, but $7.95 for 2 pieces of nigiri is a little steep in my book (though sweet shrimp is always on the pricier side)
Sometimes for dinner they give you free green ice cream too (: granted it's a tiny scoop, but definitely a great way to end my meal.Listed in: Japanese food for thought!

Although quite small, this place is awesome. Excellent service and great food! I ordered their assorted tempura and they were very generous with the fish and shrimp! They didn't just throw in random vegetables like what other Japanese restaurants normally do. Sashimi--very fresh! Finally, the servers are all very polite and attentive.

Tomi Sushi a good little place for good sushi and a good variety of other Japanese dishes. I like the rolls here but I think the sashimi is not as good as Sushi on the Run in Los Gatos.
We've been here a couple of times during lunch and they always have really great lunch specials. Lunch specials are usually around $10 but there are at least 3 - 4 dishes so it's totally worth it.
I'd make a reservation at Tomi b/c when we came here on Friday night it was really packed. It usually gets pretty packed during lunch too so we are always there when it opens. -

Darn you, Tomi Sushi. Your food is good, but your service is TERRIBLE! Once again I couldn't wait for Kahoo's line, so I went to Tomi Sushi. In addition to the regular neglectful service, the waitress kept sticking her butt on my table as she chatted to the family in the table next to me. REALLY? Come on, I know you've never provided great service, but repeatedly resting your derriere on my table? That's just a new low. I need to stop giving Tomi Sushi another try when Kahoo is extra busy.

Santa Clara, CA
One of the better sushi restaurants in the San Jose area. More on the authentic side and not one of those americanized restaurants that focus more on the look than the taste. The fresh nigiri is always fresh and of a high quality and the spicy tuna is actually spicy. I always get the Alaskan Dream roll, a salmon roll with scallop on top. Mmmm.. so good. They do offer a small sample of green tea ice cream on the house, but only for dinner. I saw one guy was provided it during lunch but apparently (as I was informed) it is for "special guests only".

Review from Robert S.
4 stars for food, and a bonus star for the excellent service.
The food was quite good. We got assorted tempura, omakase sashimi, and some eel sashimi. Excellent. Fresh, tasty, melted in our mouths. The wasabi here was different than I've had in other places. A bit smoother and more soluble in the soy sauce. I quite enjoyed it.
But what makes this a 5 star place in my opinion was the service. Our waitress was quite nice, and kept up with us. But the other waitresses checked on us when our server couldn't. The sushi chefs pinged us asking how we were doing. And the host was checking up on us. The entire staff really impressed me with how much they cared about our experience, and you really don't get that anywhere these days.
So 5 stars it is! -

The place is small and narrow. Seating arrangement is poor. You have to go sideways when passing the isle between tables. People will stare at you when passing because you end up touching their table and who knows their food too. The food is alright. The one thing I hate was the food doesn't come at the same time. Tonight the waitress forgot to bring my tempura order. I was so pissed off because my family is almost done with their dish. When my late order came, the tempura was so greasy, it was scary to eat it. It's like you're drinking the oil. Waiters and waitresses here need to be more friendly and NOT forgetful!

After agonizing for 2 days on where to take my family out for my I-just-got-my-first-real-paycheck-so-I-will-pay-fo r-this-meal-and-this-is-my-attempt-to-compensate-y ou-for-21-years-of-parenting dinner, I settled on this place. I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out.
Tomi Sushi is a pretty small restaurant hiding in the corner of the giant Asian plaza headlined by Mitsuwa and Kinokuniya. When I say small, I mean the restaurant can accommodate about 40 people. We called ahead for a reservation, and I am very glad we did, as the restaurant had multiple groups waiting on a Saturday night by 6 PM. A word of warning - they were about to give away our table after we got there about 3 minutes after our time.
I ordered the regular chirashi ($17). The breakdown was 3 tuna, 1 salmon, 1 yellowtail, 2 tamago, 1 albacore, 1 shrimp, 1 something chewy that I couldn't identify (my mom thought it was mussel), and 3 pieces of cucumber. Not the most unique arrangement, and I'm usually used to two of each fish, which makes it easier to share. I had no qualms with the taste, though. The sushi rice was flavorful and densely packed, and the sashimi was tender and fresh. Delicious, and reasonable for the price, although I've had the same quality for cheaper.
My mom had the unagi don ($15); the little I tried was very savory. My sister found her children's dinner ($9.90) delectable, and to my eye it looked surprisingly filling - miso soup, rice, salad, tempura, and teriyaki were all included. I didn't try my dad's chicken teriyaki combination dinner or my boyfriend's tekka, sake or hamachi rolls, but they both said that they were good.
The service here is a bit harried, but friendly. They were very prompt when taking our orders and delivering food, but didn't give any water refills and were pretty slow in getting us the check. Free green tea ice cream at the end was a nice bonus. All in all, a great place to turn to if you're looking for a good Japanese meal, but I'll have to come back again before deciding whether this ranks in the top. -

This is a proper Sushi house.
I went here on a Saturday afternoon and had the Sushi lunch ($14.4). There was a very short wait.
For the quality of fish you get, this is a great value. It is very fresh, and the sashimi and nigiri portions are generous. It's easy to tell this is a legit sushi operation because the nigiri pieces have wasabi embedded in the rice.
As soon as we were seated, the server came to take our orders and give us hot green tea. The service was excellent here.
Parking is a little difficult to find during peak times, but there is usually ample street parking next door. -

Can I just say, if there was a way to have an orgasm in your mouth.. this would be the place you would want to go.
Never have I had sushi this fresh before. IT LITERALLY MELTED IN MY MOUTH. The sashimi dinner.. oh my gosh.....
It's a small place that gets their fish FRESH from SF every morning. Never frozen.
Fun Fact: It's owned by Chef Morimoto from Iron Chef! So of courseee it will not be a disappointment. I promise.
Everything I had here was honestly perfection. There is so much I can say about this place, but it's really an experience you have to try on your own. You haven't had fresh sushi in SJ until you've come here. -

This place gets one star for continuing to serve bluefin tuna. Absolutely unacceptable.
The food is mid-pack otherwise: Decent (though pricey) for strip-mall Japanese, but nothing special overall. I chose a few rolls and was surprised to receive tempura-covered crab in the spider roll. The avocado on the caterpillar roll was not fresh.
Service was fast -- and by "fast" I mean "hurried" -- and mostly indifferent, like, I'm-checking-in-with-you-but-I-really-hope-you-don 't-want-anything. Strange for a little place that's only half-full and has two staff working the floor. -

I've been here three times. It never let me down! The fish is fresh and rice cooked right to the point. If you are a big fan of sushi, nigiri and rolls are great choice. As for tempura and yakitori, they are quite as good. It is so far my favorite Japanese restaurant in the bay area.

Sashimi at its best. I had perfect salmon slices. I now regret not ordering the chirashi since that's what most of the pictures are about. I also ordered ankimo which was fresh. The eggplants was probably an overkill since I was so full I couldn't finish. We also ordered albacore sashimi and broiled yellowtail collar.
We made a reservation for 6:30pm but when we arrived the sushi bar was empty. However, within 15 minutes it was completely full and the restaurant was packed.
The servers were a bit slow with their service but the food made up for it. -

This place is small -no AC , and over-priced and very small portions.
We got the 38 dollar omakase for 16 pieces of sashimi- they included the head of the sweet shrimp as a piece. They brought the head out raw so I told them to fry it - and man did they fry it - it was burnt when they brought it out 20 mins later - our sashimi plate didn't even have ginger - my wife had to ask for it five times and when they finally brought it out there were only about 5 pieces - come on man for the high prices that you freaking charge here you're so hella freaking cheap on the portions -
We were constantly looking for our waitress - she kept disappearing
Miso hella salty
Our total was 68 bucks! And we weren't even 1/4 full
It was like having expensive appetizers
Never going back to this place. -
Review from Alex L.
A very intimate restaurant is how I classify this joint. "Intimate" in this case means tables are very close together.
The hamachi just melted in your mouth with the artificial wasabi so during dinner we had a discussion about ever having real wasabi since that isn't the standard issue. Tonight was the night. They had it on the menu for a small price. It is the night when I'm gonna get my real wasabi cherry popped. Can't wait!
We anxiously waited for our dallop of the green stuff that is supposedly so special that it can only be grown in Japan (ancient Japanese secret?). All of our sashimi and rolls were waiting for this climax. The only thing we were doing at this point was sipping hot Sake in anticipation of this treat.
The little morsel arrived. It sat in a curved green glass that only showcased how little you get. I carefully pinched the right amount with my splintery disposable chopsticks onto my plate and doused it with soy sauce. Moment of truth awaits as I dipped my tuna in.
Uhhh...that's it? It tasted just like regular white horseradish you get at Safeway. In fact, if I closed my eyes I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference (unless I could taste the color green). Even the fake stuff delivered more nasal pain than this. *Sigh*....
Food was about a 3.5 stars but I had to give another 1/2 star bc our adorable little old japanese waitress was sweet as mochi. Would have been a perfect 5 stars if the portions were bigger. Instead of the traditional 7-8 piece in each roll, you only get 4-6. All the Sumo wrestlers that eat here are skinny. Why ya think? -

I haven't reviewed this place yet? Shame on me.
Tomi Sushi is a cute authentic Japanese restaurant hidden in the corner of the Strawberry Plaza on Saratoga. It's so easy to get to right off the 280 freeway.
I've been here a few times and I will say this is my favorite place for sashimi and chirashi. Their raw fish is the freshest around the area. I will not settle for anything less. Most places I've been to have provided me with buffet quality sashimi. Yuck. Every since I tried their extra special chirashi, they made every place I've tried before look like a joke. The prices are a little bit higher than other places, but the quality is so worth it.
What separates their chirashi from others? Well... they have three different chirashi bowls you can select: regular, special, and extra special. I have only ordered the extra special... go big or go home, right? They give you a large variety of sashimi topped on sushi rice. The extra special chirashi not only gives you more sashimi but has hotate sashimi (scallop), uni (sea urchin), and toro (fatty tuna). It was my first time trying uni and not feeling like a swallowed a mouthful of sea water. The uni had a very fresh rich and buttery texture. MMM my mouth is watering for it right now.
I also ordered live scallop sashimi (hotate) here as well, $22 market price. It was served sliced in a shell. I really liked it but I would much rather just eat the fresh sashimi slices instead of the live. It's a good thing to try once. I think it's a different species that's why. They have so many types of raw sashimi's to order from. Some that I've never heard of and some that you can find at any other sushi place. I'd really like it if they started to serve lobster sashimi. There's so many things on the menu, it might just be there. More reasons to come back and try everything they have on their menu!
Oh, you can also order fresh wasabi for $1.95 if you prefer this over powdered paste wasabi. However, Tomi's complimentary wasabi already taste more fresh and not like the generic powder-paste. Just something to keep in mind before ordering the fresh wasabi.
The service is great here, they are very friendly and helpful. Complimentary green tea ice cream. I love this humble place. -

This is a true authentic sushi restaurant with true Japanese sushi chefs. You should sit at the bar and watch Tetsu do his work. In any event, I have been here many times and the fish is very very fresh. On some days, they will have fresh fish flown in from Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo. I recommend that you look on the whiteboard to see what fresh fish they are offering. And if they happen to have toro (fatty tuna) then you should definitely order it.
If you're looking for fancy schmancy rolls with names like Lion King roll or Playboy roll, don't come here. It's a real Japanese sushi restaurant. They don't do those types of rolls with a bunch of sauces such that you can't even taste your fish. -
Review from Karen L.
I haven't been to Tomi Sushi for a while now so yesterday, when my friend and I decided on sushi for dinner, I was quick to suggest this restaurant.
We ordered the dragon roll, the agedashi tofu, and the saba shioyaki dinner special to share. I was first a bit taken back with the price of the dragon roll in comparison to how many pieces it was (4 at $9.50), but when the roll actually arrived, I was more than happy. The pieces were generous and perfectly made. The unagi and tempura tasted fresh and the entire thing was just delicious. I also enjoyed the agedashi tofu and the saba.
The staff is really friendly and efficient here. We were seated as soon as we walked in and the menus and our hot tea was brought to us immediately. Our waiter was cheery and super cute. Towards the end of our meal, she even offered us green tea ice cream on the house, which was nice.
I mentioned trying the Omakase special, which is where you leave it up to the chef to select your dishes for that meal, to my friend. I think we actually will try it next time we are there.Listed in: warm and fuzzy: the norcal…

This is an adorable restaurant in the middle of a very Japanese plaza. Just walking around the plaza to Tomi Sushi, i could hear Japanese conversations just about everywhere; it was really great. Moments like those when I wished I had paid more attention in my Japanese classes, instead of chugging in words and spitting them out for tests, only to forget them a few weeks later.
Tomi Sushi is very clean and has that cozy feeling. The vast majority of the sushi rolls offered on their menus seemed to focused more on sashimi than anything else. Their fish looked fresh, which was a plus. I went for a bento box, although in hindsight I wish I had asked if they did Dragon Rolls since I saw a mention of that somewhere on this Yelp page.
In all honesty, i didn't think the food here was that special, but I only had a bento box with california rolls. If you're a sashimi lover, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy the food here from the looks of the reviews and also after looking at how fresh the fish were at the bar. This place probably isn't great for big groups though... their back room looks like it could probably fit 20 but any group larger than that is probably pushing it.
Service here is super friendly. :) -

I grew up in this restaurant, going several times a week. Although I admit it has been a while since I've been here. I wanted to advertise my love for their sukiyaki. Nom nom! I can't really comment on their sushi, because as a kid, I never really ordered it. Get the sukiyaki!!
I always felt the restaurant was very inviting, with the sushi chefs greeting every guest as they walk in. -

Yummy! The place is really clean and they have really fresh sushi. The prices are pretty reasonable for the quality of the sushi. My tea cup was never less than half full, and the tea was always piping hot. They also give you a small scoop of green tea ice cream at the end of your meal. Cute.
Highly recommend if you're looking for a more traditional sushi experience (vs americanized sushi where everything is fried and topped with spicy mayo. yuck!) -

Had lunch this past friday at Tomi. They were very busy, but the chirashi was excellent, also they gave me a friend shrimp head(my fav) to complement the dish. Fresh, very nice presentation and good deal, i will return. Japanese run/owned, not some fake mayonnaise/crunchy/cream cheese roll joint...

WOW. The fish is incredible here. I haven't had sashimi this good since San Diego (and yes I have been to Japan...). Seriously the Sake Sashimi and Tuna Sashimi is incredible, it is thick, the fat in the salmon melts in your mouth, i am getting hungry writing about this place and I just ate an hour ago.
The lunch special is out of this world. For about $10 you get a bento with 2 items. I recommend the Saba Shioyaki and Sashimi. You cannot go wrong. However, I have tested everything here and all is good. This can easily be determined by the quality of the Miso soup they bring you.
I highly recommend this place and I come either here or to Yuki Sushi only. The service here is good, the ambiance is exactly what one would expect at a plaza like this, but one doesn't come here for ambiance or fantastic service, one comes here for good food and that's exactly what you get.
If you're looking for good, reasonably prices sushi and bento boxes this is the place for you, ESPECIALLY for lunch. -

Came here for the first time the other day. I ordered the sashimi lunch, excited for an awesome plate of yummy yummy sushi!
What I got was a plate of NASTY. :( The fish tasted OLD. Like... OLD OLD. I've never had fish that tasted this terdy. The texture was off, the flavor was off... it was hard to finish, honestly. :( Great dislike.
Plus was Boyfriend's dish look fine. And service was okay.
But YUCKKKKK. :( I hope they were just having an off day... but they won't see me back there in a while :(
