What's most remarkable about LA pizza is how bad it is. There are a few exceptions. The latest one is Tomato Pie on Melrose.
I had a slice of the signature Tomato Pie, a slice of Grandma (it's a margarita pizza, basically) and a can of Diet Coke. Now, usually, for pizza in LA, I'd say, and the best part was the Diet Coke.
[I'll pause while you laugh hysterically]
But seriously folks, the Grandma was awesome. The Tomato Pie was pretty good. I'll be back
Now, does anyone know you fix a broken pizza? Anyone? Anyone? With tomato paste!

Excellent customer service and one of the few places in West Hollywood that can produce a lovely single slice of pizza. If you are ordering a whole pizza, they will make half of the crust pesto base and half tomato- On top of that, they have a really refreshing and tangy cucumber salad that cuts through the yummy grease of the pizza.
They are always calm and friendly- even as the rush of high school students and mulleted melrose miscreants pour in. Glad to see a small business thriving.
I read the review in GQ and decided that I just had to try the pizza. I ordered the grandma pizza and to tell you the truth I did not think it was spectacular. The crust was good and I enjoyed the sauce but I wouldn't say it was delicious. I would go there again if I was in the area and I think based on some of the reviews I am going to try their other location.
BEST BBQ chicken pizza-- hands down!!! I could eat a whole large pizza myself!!! However... they have a $25 minimum for delivery...even to the Palazzo... which is like 2 blocks away! What the... that's such pretentious behavior for a dope place. It's kool though. I still love the pizza.

OMG, I LOVED IT! It got a great review in GQ magazine heres the link http://men.style.com/g...
All i can really say is if your in LA and cravin pizza, dont waste you time going to RT, PH, or Dominoes. Hit up this spot, get a GRANDMA its off the hinges, or heezeey how ever people are sayin it today. Also the Buffalo ranch one is da bomb, they are oh-so flavorful, oh i almost forgot, the Tirmasu! Get it togo ahhhhh im so craving this as i write this review, damn imma fat ass hehe! Small place full of love and awesome pizza.
I don't know about the 7th best slie of pizza in america. For LA it's definitely in the conversation for best slice with Joe's and Vito's because of their crust and tomato sauce. Sorry Village doesn't make the top 3 and thats very sad for me because the owner is super cool and we're both from Queens.
The grandma slice is pretty darned good. The crust is definitely the right thickness and texture. It also has the right balance of flavor with the garic, cheese, tomato and bread. At $3.00 it's a relative bargain to Vito's. The pizza game in LA has stepped up tremendously since I first moved here in the late 90s.
I had the bbq chicken and onion and it was tasty enough. Nothing amazing, but fine enough. Might go back to try a slice of something else.
Amazing little joint!
The owner is super friendly :)
Amazing pizza! They use bottled water for their crust.... and thats why its sooo yummy!
Great prizes! I had a slice of the Grandma... it was delish! :)

As good as the Silverlake location? Newp, not quite. But (and this is a big ol' but), this location delivers to me! Yes! Evidently they don't want to make that too public, (no one wants to go that far south in public), but if you ask nice, they'll make it happen.
The crusts weren't as thin and crispy and cornmealy wonderful as I remember over in hipster town but it was still a damn fine piece. Even more so when you don't have to leave the house to get it.
Two medium gourmet pies (Mr White for me, Fiesta for him), an order of garlic knots and a cannoli... just shy of forty bucks after tax and a five dollar tip. Not too shabby. Especially with the bottle of red we put it all back with. Good stuff.

YUM! Best pizza in California! Its a tiny pizza place with limited seating inside and out. I use to go down here a few times a week for dinner while working across the street because it was a great deal. Two slices of pizza and a soda for $6 or $6.50!(don't know if its still like that.) Get the grandma or meat lovers pizza. Its the best!
Hmmmm...I really wanted to LOVE, and not just strongly adore, this Tomato Pie. But for some reason, and I can't quite pinpoint it...I like it just a sliver less than it's Silverlake counterpart.
Mr. White...check.
Grandma...check.
Garlic knots...check.
Delivery? Oh hells yes! They are way up on Melrose and I'm way down (for all you stalkers out there) by Olympic and Crescent Heights, which mind you, is more than a journey...and they STILL delivered to me!! Yay for me! I had the most wickedest of hangovers (thanks to Cole's 1926 Cosmos from the night before....sigh) and was in DIRE need of something greasy, filling, yummy...and easy. TP was just what I needed and imagine my happy surprise when i found out that they'd drive their booties (and my pizza) to my pad! There's just a wee catch...$25 minimum to the "below Wilshire" crowd...it's worth it though when yer cravin' it!
Fantastically nice and easy on the eyes (sorry honey, I was hungover and couldn't help ogling!) delivery dude. The pizza was delish (we ate it ALL...two pies mind you...) and I definitely recommend it...however, in terms of overall crust love, i'd go with the Silverlake locale.
2 medium pies, one order of garlic knots, and 2 sodas...delivered for about $37 with tip.

OK so I worked in this neighborhood for 2 years and Tomato Pie was the closest lunch spot so I would have to say I have eaten here literally hundreds of times. I have tried just about everything on the menu here and while I do not claim to be a pizza elitist, I am a pizza lover. This place makes a really great pie. The staff is GREAT ! (I miss seeing you guys all the time) and the prices are more than fare considering the location.
They serve pizza by the slice daily and usually have all of their most popular specialty varieties to choose from. I personally was a huge fan of the "Buffalo" which had spicy buffalo sauce, cheese and chicken. The sauce on the buffalo was absolutely the best part. The ever so popular "Grandma" with it's tangy delicious tomato sauce and fresh basil. The "Mr. White" with a garlic olive oil sauce, ricatta, romano, mozzarella and spinach ! Yum.... They also do a great job with some of their specialty items. I really liked the "Stromboli" and the cold pasta salads. I thought the sandwiches were pretty good and basically on par with a basic "neighborhood pizza joint" kind of sub.
Slices go for about $3 a slice and they have all kinds of lunch specials and combo deals. I would usually go for 2 slices and an Orangina for lunch and would walk away completely satisfied.
All in all this is a great neighborhood spot with a really nice staff that serves a great slice !
NOTE: Keep in mind that this place is directly across the street from a high school so if you go around 3pm when school is letting out you may experience a decent wait and lots of teenagers.

After being given a compliment on my review by the creator and owner, I will redact part of my review and give it two extra stars. Him contacting me in a calm and understanding matter instead of a raging mad owner earns a lot of credibility and respect from me.
As for the cobwebs, he explained the process and care he takes for the quality and preparation. Seems that bugs do come through every so often in romaine lettuce! And what I saw wasn't a maggot I don't think, perhaps a silkworm or somesuch. Anyway, don't let my previous review scare you away from going there or ordering delivery, because it is an amazing joint.

Sauce was ok but the flavor of the pizza crust is blah...Too Sweet for my liking...Ive had all different toppings from here and their all fairly average...
Ive had all their pasta salads and their all ok...
Owner is cool and from the same part of upstate NY that i am from so im giving a extra half star for that....2-1/2 star.....
One of my favorite pizza joints in LA. The Melrose location reminds me of a NY pizza shop. Small with a variety of pizzas. I love this location because they have more pizzas on hand than the SilverLake location. My favs are the sicilian, regular pepp and tomato pie. I love the sauce they use on the tomato pie. Pastas are good too. Chicken Riggies are good and so are the salads, sandwiches....the list goes on.
I pass by this place all the time and have always just assumed it to be overpriced/bland/"touristy" pizza place on Melrose. I was completely wrong.
We found it on Yelp because my girlfriend wanted pasta and I'm always okay with pizza. Surprised by all the good reviews, we decided to check it out. Tomato Pie exceeded all of my expectations!! I had two slices and a drink and the total was a very reasonable $5.50.
Grandma Pizza $3 - Crushed tomatoes over an olive oil base. Fresh garlic, fresh basil, fresh oregano, a little mozzarella and some parmesan. Absolutely delicious new york style pizza, tons of flavor, nice and crispy bottom.
Tomato Pie $2 - Square slice of olive oil'd crust with tomato sauce on top, some herbs, romano cheese on top. This one was great too! Doesn't sound that fancy but was seriously delicious. Really good flavor to everything.
Soda $0.50 with purchase of two slices.
I'll definitely be back.

While this doesn't have the "charm" that it's Silver Lake brethren has... the pizza is just as good.
But here, I would ONLY order to go.
Had a very late meeting tonight and brought a Grandma.
Everyone went crazy for it, like I had brought the cure to aids to the meeting.
I accepted the love, but handed out menus in the process.
Gotta give credit where credit is do.
It may be a hole in the wall, but it's a bloody good hole-in-a-wall damn it!

the tomato pie is good. the sauce is rich and it has a familar taste.
it's plain & simple. tomato sauce, light olive oil without mozarella, and topped with grated romano and parsley.
the crust is crispy and the pizza slice is square.
It's tiny, a little seedy, and always crowded. I like that in a pizza place.
The guys that work here love their pizza. They knead it themselves. They make all sorts of salads and the pizza combos are definitely indicative of an 'experimental attitude'. Buffalo Chicken Pizza, crushed tomato pizza with no sauce, and loads of stuff available by the (very reasonably priced) slice.
This is the kind of place that is just a pleasure to patronize. It's the equivalent of farmers market produce or indy coffeehouse java - fresh, made with love, and tied to the community. If you are in the area, I highly recommend you drop in for a slice.

Tried it awhile back because it was next door to the sweetest sneaker shop in LA (sportie LA). Average. It is NY style which is at least something. Not as good as nearby Damiano's. Unless you are sneaker shopping, don't go out of your way.

My first time here. The pizza didnt look that appetizing to me but Im sure its delicious because all my friends said it was. I had my eye on this thing called the Lunas? It was either vegetable or meat and of course I chose the meat.
It was delicious and I had it with marinara sauce (you get to choose marinara or ranch)
This place is fairly small so it can get packed pretty quick with few seats available.
I would definitely come back again when Im around and eat like, 5 of these delicious meat pie thing.. hahha
o and its affordable!
Happy eating

I went the lame route and ordered their sandwiches instead of the pizza. I think it was the wrong way to go - next time I'll order the pizza.
The meatball sub was just okay. The meatballs themselves didn't have much flavor, the sauce was a little too tart and the bread didn't do it for me.
The prices, however, were fantastic - in a pinch I'm happy to sacrifice quality for frugality's sake. If I'm lucky, the pizza will live up to the hype in these other reviews.

We first stopped by Tomato Pie on Melrose when we were starving at about 3 in the afternoon. It seemed like a good bet: there were a bunch of rude teenagers hanging around, which is as good a vote for a pizza place as any. Unfortunately, our slices came from the oven barely warmed, so little so that the cheese on top was still quite solid. We could have walked back in and had them reheat them, but we were too hungry.
A few weeks later we ordered delivery from them, thinking that fresh, made-to-order pies would be better. The order for two medium pizzas came to nearly $35 with tip and was just barely enough food for two people. And even this would have been alright if they were anything more than a bland crust and a ton of tomato sauce with hardly any cheese. I understand now that when they say "light cheese" on the menu, they mean LIGHT FRIGGIN CHEESE. And if you want anything close to a normal amount of cheese, you'd better pony up the cash. And did I mention they were cold? They were room temperature.
I'm sure these pizzas would be super tasty if they were right out of the oven, fresh, and had a good proportion of toppings, but they're worse than mediocre when cold and swimming in tomato sauce.
People thought this was:
NY-style pizza in LA! Probably not as good as in NYC, but this place has tasty and cheap thin-crusted pizza. I usually just get cheese, but I go more for the pasta salad sides than the pizza. All of the pasta salads are so good.
Get the combo.
The prices went up and I can no longer afford to eat here very often. That's sad when it's a pizza spot, but my normal order (3 topping large) used to be $15 and now it's $18. So with tip for delivery we're talking over $20 for one pizza. At some point my brain looks at what I'm getting and says "you aren't really going to pay $18 for one 3 topping pizza are you?", and the answer is "no... ok, maybe once in a while."

So we have tried a couple of places around Melrose that have NY style pizza and this was the BEST I have had so far! Crispy bottom with flavorful toppings and good combinations. The only thing I wish they had were fresher toppings, instead of having the pizza sit there the whole day or for a few hours. it really makes a difference.
We only tried individual sizes, or maybe I will give it one more star once I have a whole pizza made right in front of me.
I do recommend it and would definitely go back over and over again!
We wanted to get pizza to watch the UFC fight at home. Flipping through my Entertainment Book, we decided to try Tomato Pie on Melrose Ave with the 50% off coupon. According to their menu, "Tomato Pie brings you the classic East Coast flavor that New York Pizza was founded on." Their dough is made with specially formulated water and high protein flour resulting in a crispy New York style crust. They only use 100% whole milk mozzarella, freshest prodce and top quality meat. They also simmer their own tomato sauces daily. After ordering, we had to wait for about 15 minutes as they freshly baked our pizza.
We got the Deluxe Pizza. It had pepperoni, sausage, ham, red onion, bell pepper, mushroom and black olive. The pizza was made fresh, and it tasted fresh. The crust was a perfect thickness. This was one tasty pizza. After our 50% off coupon, it only cost $8.00. What a bargain! Three of us only managed to finish half of the pizza.
Also ordered hot wings. There were six wings in one order. The wings were baked, not fried, and coated with delicious hot sauce. They were really good. But I think I had similar hot wings from Costco (those frozen bags of chicken wings).
I randomly stopped in there b/c there were tons of high school kids outside .. It's good and cheap. I was riding my bike up and down melrose trying to find something to do, or to eat- i'm glad I stopped in here.

I hate giving this place such a harsh review because I LOVE the one in silverlake. I always get great service and great food and I will continue to go to that one. But I swear a herd of wild boars would have to drag me to this one. First off, the service sucked out loud. And that's putting it gently. I called and they told me it would be 15 minutes. I arrived there in 25 minutes to give them extra time for my order. There was one couple sitting in the whole place. Part of my order was ready but it took the girl forever to get my rolls out of the oven and put them in a to go box. Why you ask? Surely this is not rocket science. She didn't have a limb missing. No, she was too busy running her mouth to all of her coworkers. Now I know it must suck to work on a saturday night when you probably have something better to do like shaking your booty at a club but you chose to work so do your damn job. The food also tasted way off. The sauce on my calzone was downright yucky. I will continue to go to tomato pie in silverlake because I've had nothing but great experiences there but I'll be damned if I would ever go back to this one.

SO GOOD. The place is so tiny, but the squeeze is worth it for their white pizza. To die for!!!!!!! I don't like how they charge you for refills though. BAH.
People thought this was:
Great pizza. Seriously. Try the Mediterranean (It has corn on it - weird! And is best ordered without - weirder!), Eggplant Parmigiana, BBQ Chicken & Onion, or the Joe P (peppers and spicy sausage with crushed tomatoes). The salads are good as well, filled out with a variety of vegetables and big enough to share.
Tomato Pie is not, however, open late. Nor do they have coupons or specials or anything, which is sad because half the fun of a glutenous multi-person Sunday night delivery order is calculating the "best deal" from the coupons section of the menu. So, yes, this self-described neighborhood "pizza joint" can get pricey when you and yours need to fuel up for a six hour Olympics watching binge. But Tomato Pie gets the gold (sorry, I couldn't help myself) for fresh ingredients, inspired gourmet pizzas, and their New York (Gasp! How dare I?!) style crust.
People thought this was:
I frequently ate here after school since it was conveniently located right across the street from my previous high school (Fairfax!) :D
The place is tiny but their pizzas are gooood :) The sauce is tasty and packed with flavor, while the crust is thin and lightly crisp.
Get the pizza+pasta+drink combo! I personally like the original tomato pie pizza, but the buffalo and BBQ are good as well. I love the pasta with the spinach and crumbles of cheese all topped off with a zesty sauce! mmmm~
People thought this was:
I've never eaten in, but why bother when the delivery boys are adorable hipsters? I'm used to pizza delivery guys being stoned high schoolers or high school dropouts, but this is far superior. It doesn't hurt that the pizza is tasty and well-priced. I'm a fan of their vegetarian pizza because they don't skimp on the veggie offerings, both in quantity and diversity, and it almost makes you feel downright healthy for eating your pizza this way. Don't worry though, plenty of meaty options for those of you who are absolutely fine with the fact that pizza is crap for you and don't need to trick your brain. Also worth nothing is the fact that they offer an extra large pizza, which is a great deal if you're having lots of people over. Or if you are gluttonous and really like leftovers. Whichever, I won't judge.
I loved me some tomato pie, when I lived in the neighbrohood. Usually got the small personal pizzas or the calzones. I consider myself a calzone afficianado, and there's was on the top side.
They were always quick service no long waiting lines on the phones like a Pizza Hut or Dominos. The pizzas would always be ready in less than 20 minutes.
There may be a table or two in side. I know there was seating outside the front door. It's on Melrose so, yes Parking will blow monkey balls.
Definitely it's a keeper.

In my never-ending quest to find the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd best pizza in the country, I stumbled into this place when I was visiting family in L.A. I guess when I find the #1 place, I won't be able to call it "1st best" but I'm sure you get the picture. I had the Grandma pizza and it was awesome. My kids didn't want any pizza (they were in that post-Thanksgiving "I'm never eating again" mood). When they saw my reaction, they both asked for a bite and soon I was ordering more. We also had their vegetarian roll and it was delicious.
I'm not giving them 5 stars because I've only eater there once and I've decided that I can't give places five stars until I've frequented them a few times.
By the way, my current top two pizza places are Bleecker Street in NYC (clearly numero uno) and Zachary's in Oakland, CA.
I came across this place last night. I wasnted to try something new (besides frankie and johnny's). The place is teeny tiny with a few seats. I had the sicilian cheese pizza that was delicious. We also ordered a sausage roll, being that I do not like peppers I did not want any of that. My beau said he enjoyed it. My last slice was a regular pepperoni slice. The crust was thin but good and crispy. Prices are good. They have canned sodas (which is a plus in my book). All together we enjoyed 3 slices (2 sicilian, which are extra) a sausage roll, water, can soda and the total was $16.50. It deserves at least one shot from everyone.
I definitely would've tried out Tomato Pie about, oh 3 years ago if they were open past 9pm. Fighting Hollywood traffic on the 101 during rush hour has never been my favorite thing to do, so inevitably I always drive by thinking, "That place looks cool."
Imagine my pleasure then to be in the Fairfax area on a breezy weekday afternoon with a mean dinnertime hunger creeping into my stomach. Tomato Pie was within reach, and my budget.
The traditional Tomato Pie slice reminded me of a thin focaccia with a layer of marinara sauce topped with grated romano cheese and parsley flakes.
This was soon followed up with the buffalo style hot wing pizza-a much more moist flavorful explosion of perfectly golden crust, stringy cheese, soft chicken and pungent spices.
Service was pleasant and accommodating, bringing the slices to our outside table with a smile. Tomato Pie's an easy place to grab a quick hot slice on the go, or for you lucky neighborhood folk, a delivery order.

This place almost seems like it doesn't want to be discovered, hidden back behind that building across the street from Ballers, but I was glad I did. Their pizza is great, the staff is nice, and I'm addicted to the spicy sausage sub. Pretty reasonable prices too.
Tomato Pie is pretty good pizza, its no holy grail, but if I want pizza they're not going to disapoint me.
Thin crust, reasonably priced perhaps a little steep, various specialty pizzas, decent service.
Not the greatest place to eat at, better for delivery or take out.
