Overpriced for what it is...basic. I used to work in the area, so having a lunch option in crawling distance was nice. But now that I'm working in Lincoln Park I won't be back.
It should be a two, but I really like the giant Tomato Man painting on the wall. I'm a sucker for crazy, silly art.
I've lived in Chicago for a year and a half now and its taken me this long to step away from the deep dish pizza and try the thin crust. Not to mention this is one of the few places really close to my office. I've been at my job for over a year and never tried Tomato Head.
First off, if all thin crust pizza is as cripsy and crunchy and delicious at tomato head then deal me in. I got one with spinach and tomato and it was phenomenal. I also tried a Village salad (tomato, cucumber, red onion, kalamata olives, feta) and that was pretty great too.
It really would be a 5-star worthy place, but it is just too pricey for what it is. And the service isn't stellar.
Okay I have lived in this city my whole life and I thought I knew some good thin pizza...enter Tomato Head...that was the most amazing thin corn meal crust ever...it was so crispy...the crust held up until I brought it home to the family...it was just perfect! Sauce was great, toppings abundant and a lot of cheese. Some places have started putting less toppings on but not Tomato Head. Thank you Mr Tomato Head for making my night tonight. I can not wait to order again.
My only complaint would be the employee...no personality and not very friendly. Um last time I checked this is a service industry. I also felt bad for this location because there was no one in here on a Tuesday night at 6pm.
I really wanted to give 4 stars but I couldnt bring myself to do it.
The good points: The flavor of the pizza was great...good sauce...good cheese...fresh veggies. Friendly service.
The bad points: The crust was a little under done. The price was a bit too much for the size of the "slice" they give you - not an actual super large slice like most places but two small slices.
I think I would sitll go back though. Something draws me in...
In this city, there is no shortage of pizza places and as such, I do think there is a higher standard because you can simply go elsewhere. I should declare my bias upfront since I found one of my favorite thin crusts. (see Pat's Pizza review)
That said, this place is a hit or miss which is one of the bigger problems. No consistency. When it's hot and good, the pizza is good. I recently tried bacon on the pizza and it was very well done and wonderfulyl yummy. It is a thinner crust, but not as thin as others (inbetween thin and a handtossed is how I would categorize it). It is a perfect combo when you have some that are a little wary of "thin crust." If the pizza was like this all, or most, of the time, it would get a solid three or three and a half stars. The big problem is that other times it has been overcooked, not hot, and just not the same.
Delivery is so-so: sometimes it's not very hot. Other times they forget things in your order (I don't know how this happens when you order it online). The upside is it has been pretty quick delivery and it's pretty cheap.
I use to attend the Lincoln Park restaurant on a regular basis, but I quit going because of the poor service. They seemed to always mess something up with the order and take an extremely long time to get the order out. This happened whether or not they were busy, not busy, preordered on the phone, or online. This can usually be overlooked if the staff appears to be putting forth an effort, but the guys in the kitchen are always leaning up against the tables, chairs, and walls and appear to be annoyed when you point out a problem with the order.
All that said, I decided to give the restaurant another try today. Months since my last visit, all the same things happened today. In addition we were served cold mozzarella sticks AND there were only a half dozen people in the place.
I wish I could say that I am the only person that has had this experience. However, many people in my office no longer eat there for similar reasons.
I hit up the Tomato Head on my way out from Swing Dancing. What a way to completely go against all the calories I just burnt off then to get some PIZZA! Hmmm...who cares, right? NOT ME!
Granted the thin crust pizza was not THE BEST pizza I have ever had, but it definitely hit the spot. The pizza was hot, the cheese was gooey and I was a happy Taryn!
If I find myself in the west loop neighborhood again I will be back for more!
Cheap, and the pizza sucks.
We were so hungry we walked into the first place we saw.
I did not like their pizza. It was thin and crispy, yes. So thin and crispy that it destroyed the inside of my mouth. Oh, and their small is more like a medium. Unfortunately, I had to trash a lot of this pie.

So I ordered a chicken Caesar salad from a pizza place. I know... I know... bad move. But I was… Read more »
I love pizza. Tons. I've had all kinds and am loving the Chicago deep dish style, but it gets to be a bit much.
Sometimes I just want a light, thin-crust pizza with plenty of toppings.
Tomato Head FTW. Not that pricey and it's damn good.
What a disappointment. The crust is like toasted stale bread. Too thick to be crispy but too dry to have a nice chew to it.
The only good part is the cornmeal on the outside and that the cheese doesn't get overly greasy like some delivery spots. Practically everywhere in the city could beat this pizza, including many frozen ones you could get at a convenience store.
TOMATO HEAD TO THE RESCUE!
Amazingly crispy, tasty cornbread crust, everything on the pie had great flavor. Chunky veggies, spicy peppers, greasy but delish pepperoni. Pricey, but I didn't pay for it. Win win!
Yes yes yes!
God bless http://Grubhub.com. They make me aware of all of these great places that deliver to my apartment that I never knew existed.
Enter Tomato Head.
I had a fierce craving for a meatball sandwich. (My favorite! Hey, when you hear the call of the cow, you have to answer.) Tomato Head makes 'em and delivers 'em. And oh boy, are they tasty! The meatballs are perfectly seasoned, the tomato sauce is super rich and tangy and there's the perfect amount of melted mozzarella cheese on top. Add a can of diet coke and serve it on a slightly toasted hoagie roll and you have yourself one very happy camper.
Meatballs = love. I bet you didn't know that. Well, maybe if you're Italian you did.
My boyfriend and I ordered delivery from here on Friday. We ordered a pizza, fried mushrooms, and wings. Delivery was about 45 minutes- pretty good on a Friday night. The pizza was ok. No amazing ingredients, sauce was nice (sweet/savory) and the crust was nice with a cornmeal bottom. My boyfriend said the wings were just alright. And the fried mushrooms were very very plentiful (for a side order) but tasted quite salty to me. But they came with a nice side of marinara for dipping.
We might order from them again- but we have several favorite pizza places in the area who deliver- so this one will be much lower on the list. I woul dbe interested in trying their calzones though!
Heart pizzas on Valentine's Day! Ha!
I order from Tomato Head all the time. They are right in my neighborhood and usually show up pretty quick, so they got that going for them which is good. We've had the Firebreather, BBQ chicken, the works and the veggie. The pizzas are thin crust and have cornmeal in them that covers the bottom if the box. If they overdue the pie it can get crackerlike and crisp. I'm also a big fan of slices when it comes to thin crust and can't stand the party cut. They also have sandwiches and salads to choose from which have been good.
I'm still remembering Pi and we are in Chicago so yeah you can find some better pizzas. TH is a solid choice when you need your pizza fix.
Yeah this is another Midwestern weirdo pizza joint that cuts their pies into squares/rectangles. But that's ok, because the pizza is actually really good!
There's actually seasoning to it! And you eat it and it is good! EVEN the crust!
The staff is a bit "oh, hi... you're here." as opposed to helpful and attentive. And if you need a corkscrew for the bottle of wine you naturally carry around with you if you're like me and my crew (actually, I'm not sure if this place is BYOB but we were in the mood and it was late and empty and we figured we'd ask) well good luck. Make sure to bring your own.
Adequate.
Hanging out at West Loop Studio tonight with the Otonohana girls and Beth P, poring over millions of disposable camera pictures...HUNGER strikes. (Well actually, a migraine struck...and with my noggin meds, I require greasy food...just 'cause).
Tomato Head Pizza was called, the delivery guy showed up about a half hour later, and the world was righted once again...the pepperoni was much better (in my opinion) than the veggie, which I found a bit bland...though it was quite greasy. But hey, its pizza...I mean, really...it's like saying "its got cheese on it."
$45 for 2 pizzas seems steep, but honestly at this point I would've paid $100. It was quick, hot and arrived to the right destination: my stomach.
However, ya know...I've had better. We live in Chicago, after all :)
I ordered delivery and methinks I should have called somewhere else... If pizza with a really hard crust, soggy garlic bread, and runny ranch is your cup of tea then you will love Tomato Head. They make their crust with corn ingredients which is interesting. Maybe you'll like it, I just didn't.
I have found another good pepperoni pizza in chicago!
Just plain ol' pepperoni n cheese- they do it right.
I had this a couple times while working on the elite event, and I must say that it was yummy. I will see how it is from their Halsted location next time I need a slice.
The veggie pizza wasn't good tho. I pretty much scooted the veggies off the piece, and just ate the crust. Tomato Head could never compare to Art of Pizza's veggie pies.
Stick with the pepp.
I am a fan-great pizza mainly to go-not a great place to eat in at, however always tasty, a tad pricey or else I would have given 5 stars-welll worth checking out-they are also very good about sending coupons via email...
The first time I ordered from Tomato Head, I was pleasantly surprised. As a result, whenever I order in pizza (which is not horribly often), they are my go-to. Their crust is amazing (corn meal-y) and the pizza is always well-cooked. I always order the same thing--large thin crust with spinach, mushrooms and sausage. The spinach and mushrooms are always fresh, and the sausage is great too!
Normally I would only give four stars just because their topping add-ons are a little pricy per item, so delivery can end up being a bit on the expensive side. However, now that I work right down the street, my carry-out experience on Thursday was definitely five stars!
I called and ordered my pizza over the phone (they also have an online ordering system if you are human contact averse). They told me to come by in 20 minutes. I picked up the pizza and chatted with the friendly guys behind the counter for a few minutes. I headed back to the office and opened up the box and this pizza looked INCREDIBLE.
Three of us dug right in and all agreed that it was the best thin crust we had ever had. It was cooked to perfection (crispy but not burned) and had more cheese on it than Tomato Head usually distributes. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!
I think we found ourselves a new Thursday tradition! :)
ah cornmeal... that's the "magic" ingredient in their crust (thanks fellow yelpers)...
for those of us who like really crispy pizza crust, tomato head's for you. it is a bit grainy so if you have texture issues, stay away. the crust is what will bring me back to TH. the sauce was weak though...begging for spices. i had to dump a bunch of oregano and red pepper flakes on every square slice. the zucchini was really fresh, not overly-cooked or doused in oil, but the spinach was burnt to a crisp. it's nice to have a more casual dining spot on restaurant row when you are not in the mood for white tablecloths and complicated menus...
I think their pizza is good but not by the slice...
I am not a fan of pizza's by the slice in general...
The first time I went here we had pizza by the slice, the second time we ordered a small thin crust pizza, it was really good, I agree pricey for pizza but its the city...
Tomato Head has a good solid vegetarian pizza.
The delivery is fast and nice.
The online ordering painless (for once!!)
The price is a little steep...but when it's on the company card -- I'm not complain'
Used to order the thin crust pizza with broccoli and peperoni. It was pretty good, though the brocooli always came undercooked but burned on the edges. I found this place on http://delivery.com and it was convenient becuase of the delivery aspect.
They aren't the fastest restaurant either, it always took a long time to food from Tomato Head. Maybe I'll give it another shot since i've moved. Maybe service has been better.
The pizza sucks. This is Chicago, learn how to make a freakin pizza. None of that BS thin pizza shit. Go to New York to eat crappy pizza. I'll pay $4.99 down the street at the shitty Dominic's for the Safeway knock-off of the Digiornos pizza before I'll eat this crap again. Must be some kinda hippie thing. Damn hippies.
It does get two stars, however, because the sandwiches are decent. Just decent. Nothing special, not even mediocre or average- a few notches above palatable.
Lots of cops hangout here. This is strange, because this appears to be a hippie joint, and the CPD are paid a lot, so they don't need to eat this crap. So if you need a flatfoot, check here first, otherwise there are none in the neighborhood, ever. (Except at Starbucks on Madison and Morgan in the morning for their coffee).
The pizza itself is pretty good although a tad on the bland side... be sure to have your crushed red pepper and parmesan on hand. But quality indredients and lots of toppings.
One gripe I have is the size - they only have small and large. I'm a medium kinda gal, so I'm a little peeved about that. Also, customer service isn't the greatest when you call in...
I was pleasantly surprised with this place. I was in the neighborhood and needed lunch fast because I was starved.
I only tried a slice of their cheese pizza--and it was pretty good. I liked the fact that the thin crust was soft and not super crispy.
A good size for this location, and their TV had NCAA BB highlights on, which was nice.
Unlike one of other reviewers, I think Tomato Head pizza has improved in the last few months! Their specialty is thin crispy pizza. They used to burn the crust a little bit but the last couple of times it has been perfect - crispy but not burned. The sauce is sweet and the ingredients are fresh - yum.
I love this pizza...the thin, crispy crust wins me over. But, I am also a big fan of the cardboard pizza I used to get at the skating rink in the 80's...perhaps my love of TH is part nostalgic affect. I do not like deep dish pizza...I like my pizza thin and crispy...it should stand at attention when I hold a slice:)
I like the price point, here, too and I think it is great that you can order online or by phone.
this pizza was good! as were the breaded mushrooms. We ordered online and the pizza was still hot when we got it home (even tho we had to go back for ranch for the mushrooms, even tho we specifically requested it upon ordering). Lots of corn meal at the bottom of this deliciously crispy thin crust pizza!
The inside of the joint is actually cute inside! I would sit and eat in there next time.
Bonus that they have an ice cream cooler (filled w/ Good Humor stuffs!). mmmmmmmmmm........
WARNING: They cut their pizzas into SQUARE slices. If you're one of those triangles-or-nothing people, this is NOT the pizza for you!
I like pizza that has cornmeal on the bottom of the crust, and I like pizza where the veggies are fresh. So I like Tomato Head pizza. It's pretty overpriced, but it's the best delivery we've got in the West Loop. And the mushrooms and green peppers have those wrinkles on them that tell you they were real whole raw veggies recently- not just in a can.
Be careful about the olives. The way they pile them on your pizza, it makes it super salty. I wouldn't order them as a topping again.
The delivery is $2.50 and takes usually 45 min to an hour. A few times the pizza has arrived not-quite-hot, but never cold. I've never been to the restaurant itself, though. So I can't comment on that.
This pizza is nothing more than glorified (as in price) Little Ceasar's pizza. The sauce was straight from a can bland. Also tried the calzone and had wished I was eating a pizza puff instead. Disappointed. Would only eat there again if I were intoxicated at 3am
We are newer to the neighborhood and just ordered pizza from Tomato Head this past week. We were very pleased with our pizza, great crispy crust on the thin pizza, just enough cheese and sauce. Our delivery was on time and price was it was on par with other pizza places we have ordered from previously. Our meal was pretty basic, we had the thin crust large cheese pizza and a house salad. But it was tasty. I have no comparison to how this place used to be, but we will order from them again.
One thing, they did tell us that a large pizza would feed 4-5 people. I can't imagine it really feeding that many people. A large would comfortably feed 3, unless my fiance and I are pigs and just ate a lot! :) Which is also possible...
AMAZING PIZZA. GREAT ATMOSPHERE. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the thin crust pizza. Delivery is fast, friendly. Great managment too.
Cheap tasting pizza. I guess I expected better. There was this weird corn/starch/grain crumb stuck to the crust of the pizza, which reminded me of Little Caesars, which has pizza for $5. The main difference between Little Caesars and this place, is that I ended up spending $20 for a pizza, a salad, and one drink. The salad was great, but I made one just like it, better though, the next day. It was a cucumber/tomato/feta salad, with caesar dressing. (1 cucumber, 1/2 large tomato, chopped to 1/2" squares, 1/8-1/4 cup feta cheese)
I ended up cutting the roof of my mouth on the pizza crust, because it's just that crispy. There was very little flavor, and alot of grease.
The whole Tomato Head experience was weird. There was a loud football game on, loud music over that, and people trying to talk over all of these things. It was loud for a night out with my girlfriend. The guy making pizza in the kitchen was making her nervous, because he was giving some weird stalker stare to her for about 35 minutes, while we were eating.
In this neighborhood, I'd recommend going to Perez, right down the street, to eat. It's not pizza, it's mexican, but it's alot better than this place. Save your money and time, go somewhere else.
Tastes even better when cut pie rather than square, though either way the pizza is excellent.
There's not much to like here. the crust on the calzone was different (though we weren't big fans), I guess if you've never liked any other pizza crusts, it might be worth a shot. and the veggies toppings were tasty. the sauce is horrible, bland, and tastes like a metal can. the chicken wings were meh. the delivery driver seemed to take offense that our door was in the rear of the building, even though we had given very detailed directions. also couldn't get the web ordering portal to take a credit card.
Tomato head pizza kitchen is awesome!
My boyfriend and I love Tomato Head! The pizza does have a thin crust so if you like a normal chicago style this may not be for you. I think the crust is unique and sauce and cheese is good too! Sometimes we pick it up because it tastes best when fresh out of the oven! They do have very fast delivery but were only a couple blocks away so I can't guarantee that for everybody.
I was happy to find a quality food option in the West Loop that did not require full service. They had a nice lunch special, which included a "jumbo" slice of pizza, salad, and a drink for $6.95. After factoring in the Todd Stroger miracle taxes it came out to about $15 dollars. The crust was very good and the pizza had good flavor. I got the special, which was the BBQ chicken and I think I would have enjoyed a little more if I went with the sausage. I'll definitely be coming back here.
