I've always wanted to try a teppanyaki place but not an overpriced one like Benihana's so I was really excited when we were invited to dinner for my bf's friend's birthday party.
I was really impressed with how organized they were and how they kept track of everyone's orders and not once screwed it up and we had a big party that took up a whole table. Only downside that I didn't really like was that it felt kinda separated. They had two grills and one side had their own chef and our side had our own. So it wasn't like a whole table group thing anymore; it didn't feel like a fun union.
The chef we had was incredibly social, funny and charming. They must hire these guys based on how they interact with people because they picked the perfects chefs with just the right personality. They were able to roll with the punches when some of the girls at our table were recklessly flirting with them all the while being able to remember who had what (yes I know they also have it written down) and cook and perform and talk at the same time. Or maybe I just suck at multitasking....
Either way, I was very impressed.
Boyfriend and I both order some drinks, I had a mojito that had absolutely no mint and tasted like straight up mint vodka. And he had a grape nehi that wasn't purple as grape nehi's should be but was instead this bright red color. It looked like kool-aid and tasted as such and was delicious. I made my bf drink my mojito. Haha, sucker.
I had fun. I'm glad I finally got to experience a place like this. Dinner was a little overpriced but when I think about it it came with soup, salad, main entree and dessert plus you are paying for the experience so everything works out and I left surprisingly full =) -
Review from Sandie L.
Interesting restaurant because of they way they bill. Sushi Bar, Bar, and "show and meal" all have seperate billing. So, I too, will have a two reviews for this place:
4 Stars for the sushi bar! Excellent service from a nice Japanese man who offered his opinons on his choices that I may like. Nice presentation and took his time presenting me with his "masterpiece". I tried the sashmi salad which is raw tuna on a bed of lettuce with their house dressing. The tuna was a nice cut and fresh tasting. Good portion size for a appetizer! I also tried seared cajun tuna, which was my favourite. I have never had cayenne pepper on my seared tuna, and I think I may have found my love match!
3 stars goes to the "show and meal". I came here with 15 other people for a birthday party. Great place if you have a large party. Gets very busy and loud so if you are interested in a quiet place, not the place for you. Chef was pleasant and funny. The stars really go to the chef.
The food was mediocore. I would not come back for the food other than the sushi bar. $15 + dollars for mediocore food is not my style, I will pay for the nice friendly service of the chefs here, but the wait staff and food is a no go for me.
And if you have a sensitive stomach to oils, grease and MSG, this also would not be the place for you if you choose food cooked on the grill. -

The food is excellent at the tables. Sushi's a little expensive but good. I like the entertainment but they need to speak up because it's quite noisy at times.
My only complaint is the servers seem to be slow on drink orders and once your food is gone they're all about shoving you out the door. I am a fan and it's probably the only good restaurant in Federal Way. -

Went there a few years ago for new years eve and had so many problems. The biggest issue was that the staff was rude and actually yelling at us after I complained about the gratuity charge on my bill. By the way, if the service was good I would have paid it but, we didn't get much of a show, had to wait for 30 minutes to be seated (with reservations) didn't get all of our dinner, had rude wait staff etc. but, when I asked them to remove the gratuity charge I was told I was like all americans and don't want to pay for my food and told to get out and never come back. No problem....I don't ever want to eat at a place that is racist.

As far as "authentic" Japanese Teppan can go, good luck trying to find it. The chef we had was Korean, but he was charming and sociable... And who really cares anyway? You have Korean chefs cooking Japanese food, Mexican chefs cooking French food, American chefs cooking Italian food, etc and so on..
We had a huge group coming here and had a table to ourselves. The setting is intimate if you know everyone at your table. Everyone else tends to fade away the more kitschy Geisha-shaped porcelain cocktails you have. I had the filet mignon cooked rare (duh) and it was just the way I like it. The costs can mount in places like this, but what do you expect for dinner performance art? -

My favorite restaurant!! I have traveled all over the world eating fantastic steaks -- Tokyo had THE BEST filet mignon I have ever tasted... Great service, great entertainment, and by far the best filet mignon. I have celebrated many birthdays here with my family... it is a great show with a great meal. The cooks do cool tricks with the food and their utensils, and they make funny jokes to keep you entertained the whole time. I always request Texas Romeo when I go there -- he is my favorite :)

There is something really satisfying about seeing your food prepared for you. However, after two or three dinners watching the exact same performance...it gets old. The last time I went to Tokyo Japanese Steak House was a few months ago. My brother's steak was overdone. He ordered his steak medium rare, it was served medium well. They also confused our order twice.
If you have a group of people, this might be an OK place to go. Otherwise you'll be sharing the table with people you don't know. But then again, that's not always a bad thing.
If you are there to celebrate your birthday, be warned! They come out of the kitchen with a drum and make you dance. :)
Pros-
-Entertaining (I've seen better though)
-They give you quite a bit of food (I have always come out of there feeling nearly stuffed).
Cons-
-Food is either very tasty or very average. It's hit and miss.
If you want to risk being served a lot of mediocre food, go here. -
Review from Julia W.
I came here expecting a Benihana knock-off as most restaurants tend to be.
I was pleasantly surprised at how good the food truly was.
The prices were on par with most hibachi houses & the food was great. -
Review from Jeff H.
Stopped in for lunch, and had a great experience. I was expecting a knock off, watered down Benihana like experience, but I was pleasantly surprised.
While the cooking experience was exactly the same as Benihana (on the flat top grill, prepared in front of you) the overall experience just seemed more inviting. Our chef was friendly and very enthusiastic which I thought was great since we had just stopped in for lunch.
Food was very good, I had the chicken with steak and it was under $15.00. It came with zucchini, onion, and sprouts (exactly the same combination as Benihana) and it was all delicious.
In closing, I thought the food was tasty, service was swift, and the price was definitely right! I'll be back again the next time I'm in the area looking for a great lunch spot! -

Great place for a Birthday party. Little expensive but we had a great time. Make sure to tell the cook how you want the meat cooked.

This was a great date place:-) Here's why: It is interactive.. Keeps you talking ...about what is being cooked on the teppan grill.. The chef keeps you interested.. the one we had was funny, edgy..quirky.. :-)
Food was great.. My one thing about the place was that the waitress was 'rushy' we ordered an app. & she brought the salad before we were complete with the app. The small basic salad was drowned in dressing. Had a great wine list. My date had a sparkling red Italian wine. Never had that:-) I had a Malbec.. both were good. Dinner was filet and shrimp.. Yummy.. cooked perfectly. Fried rice was delicious. Again, though, while eating main meal and conversing.. the waitress asked us 3x if we were done with our meal.. even brought boxes. NO we lived in Europe and we eat slow and savor the meal.. NOT gourging it all down! So she got frustrated and brought a sherbet for dessert.. and it melted. Kind of rude! Nonetheless.. I still liked it and would go back:-) -

My family and I enjoy this place. I've been here a few times but couldn't afford to do it all the time. For my family of 5, it was over $100 and please believe we all ordered the cheap stuff! The fried rice is quite a bit extra but they don't tell you that whey you order and they ask what kind of rice you want. I don't really care about that but just an FYI to yelpers.
The show is basically the same every time. There may be a few different jokes or banter with us or the other people at the "table" but basically the same none-the-less...which is another reason you want to space out your visits.
The last time we went was the first time we brought the kids. They LOVED IT!!! Our chef really played with them a lot and even though we went there MONTHS ago, my three-year-old still laughs about a couple of the jokes. Of course, when the kids approve, I approve! Happy kids make for so much more of an enjoyable experience!!!
Over all...It's clean, fun, decent food, big portions, good service...Just keep in mind that if you go there too often you'll know how it's possible to have too much of a good thing! -

Took my mom here for an early mother's day celebration dinner. She's never had the teppanyaki style experience, thought this would be the best opportunity to take her! As soon as we arrived, they had seats available for us right away (we had 5 in our party). So prompt and very nice at the door! Sat down and ordered within 5 mins of being there. I was a bit bothered that GREEN TEA was $2!! The mug was filled 3/4 of the way and it was a Costco brand green tea... jeez!
We ordered 3 rolls- Red Dragon Roll, The Mariner Roll and The Tokyo Mix. The best I'd say was the Mariner roll- had a nice blend of the spicy mayo and unagi sauce to top off with the salmon! We ordered: 2 orders of shrimp & steak, shrimp & chicken, and 2 orders of sukiyaki. The best was the shrimp and steak! Full of flavor and didn't need to dip into the sauce that was given. The teppanyaki chef was incredible! My goodness! Jino, was his name. If you ever go there, ask for him! He was full of jokes- GREAT sense of humor! There was a birthday at our table (we shared with a small family of 4), he made sure to spotlight the little birthday guy! Jino was talented, entertaining and we were all amazed with his practice. My mom asked him how long had he been doing this and he jokingly replied "This is my first day! They had us watch a video!" He was very attentive and always made sure nobody was excluded! I watched the other chefs but just something about this Jino guy was amazing!!
Portions were fairly sized. We got a lot of fried rice with our meal, veggies and meat portions weren't too bad. When I watched him portion out the shrimp, each of us received 7-8 pieces WITH some leftovers that he was so nice to give others as a small appetizer or what he called "appeteaser"! He worked well with the kids at our table- in general, he knew how to work the crowd.
At the end of the meal, we all had the sherbet that was included in the meal. That was pretty tasty too! Great way to cleanse the palette.
Definitely coming back here! Made everybody happy, never was there a dull moment! If you do go, ask for Jino as your teppanyaki chef!! If you go for a birthday, they'll make you stand up and they do their drum song dealy madooly. It's pretty neat- they get everybody into it!! -

Very expensive, but worth it! Everything tasted fresh and well prepared. We ordered sea urchin, sashimi plate, creamy scallop, and more.

In case you haven't been to a teppanyaki place before, the basic idea is that you get seated around a cooking station, with a large flat heated surface, and when a sufficient number of people are assembled, a cook arrives and proceeds to fill everyone's order, accompanied by a generous amount of culinary theatrics. So the genre, if you will, is a compromise of cuisine and entertainment, and while the performance is definitely fun, it does take place at some expense to the food.
The food's good, but not remarkably so, and due to the nature of the medium, there's not a lot of variety. So the only reason you'd go back is if you really like the cooks' antics, and for myself, I have to say that once was fun--a lot of fun, actually--but I'm no hurry to repeat the experience. -

Review from Mark S.
We came here twice in a week so I guess I have to give it at least 4 stars. I really enjoyed the teppanyaki lobster, steak and chicken the first time I had it but I was less impressed the second time. The steak was pretty bland both times but the lobster was delicious the first time. The shrimp are also very, very good. No one complained about their meal when we were done, but we were all in agreeance that some parts were less than impressive. The first time was on a Sunday and the restaurant was pretty slow, so maybe that is the secret. When we went the next Saturday it was packed and the food was not quite as good.
We did order about 5 rolls of the sushi and I was impressed with that. They were all tasty and fresh, something you expect in this area but you don't always get it.
We did have two small kids with us and they had nice little kids meals.
Of course the show is fun, they do put on a display.
This is a place I would recommend for either sushi or teppanyaki meals. -
Review from JoAnna L.
I've been to many teppan grill restaurants before and this was just the same, which is great because I love this style of food. Getting your dinner cooked right in front of you to order is awesome. Our cook was funny and very personable. The servers were attentive and made sure our drinks were full all night. It was my birthday, so it was nice when the cook made different bday inspired drawings of hearts with eggs and rice on the grill. It was also nice when the cook was about to light the grill up with a huge fire and a server noticed my baby niece, so she shielded her eyes with a tray, haha. We didn't want her getting too scared with the fire. The restaurant itself is very nice and the bar was really cool looking. My dinner was the chicken and shrimp for $18.95 (but included miso soup, salad, rice, veggies, main course, and a dessert). They also brought my ice cream out with a candle and had a drum going while they sang, it was awesome. My family and friends had a good time and so did I.

Their hrs. are kinda kooky. The food is fresh entertaining and delicious. They have fast service, clean bathrooms and you can go on a date night, take the family, or go with friends. Make reservations, the parking lot is a little small.
Affordable for this type of restaurant and cleaner compared to some in the area we have been to. -

My husband & I went for dinner there on Friday evening. The service was less than good. The chef was good and interacted with everyone at the table but the chicken was so overdone that you couldn't even chew it!
We printed out one of the coupons from the web page...was told that it was not good for dinner. We did not see this on the coupon.
We will never go back to this resturant. To many $$$ for what you get and the food and sauces are bland. Benehana's is much better value.
Maybe when they open the Bellevue things will improve. -
Review from Shasta L.
This is a pretty darn good teppanyaki restaurant, and it has always been a rare but popular find in Federal Way. Their new remodel a few years ago added a very swank sushi bar and more grills/tables on the main restaurant floor. Parking lot is always packed, no matter what night of the week, but I've never waited more than 20 minutes to be seated.
Very good food - way better than Benihana or Tanaka of Tokyo in Hawaii, not to mention a little less expensive. I nearly always order the fried rice and scallops and shrimp, but the chicken and steak are cooked perfectly too. As far as the sushi, it's also delicious. While you can order it with your meal, I recommend ordering at the sushi bar while you're waiting on your table as it takes a while for them to make fresh rolls on a busy night. -

me and my boyfriend enjoy this restaurant!
Service is excellent and the food is great. You get a show from the cooks with your dinner that is enjoyable.
we love the lobster!!!! -
Review from Peter K.
The male staff that prepares the food are fantastic, so friendly and attentive. The food is always prepared wonderfully. However the portions are smaller and the prices are BIGGER. This is a place to go only on a special occasion due to the high prices. However the cooks and food are worth it in the end.

this is a fun place! interactive chefs, and a variety on the menu. There are usually other tables with events going on too, so the action never stops. I watched older adults to younger children enjoy their meal while here.

Of Course I've been here more than once, but this time it was a friend of mines Birthday...he was excited to watch all the tricks...but as for myself...you seen one trick you've seen them all. I get the same thing everytime I come here...Lobster and Shrimp. Always good and cooked to my liking. My date got the chicken...he seem to enjoy it. Of course its spendy but to know my date enjoyed himself on his birthday was great.

My Sweetheart and I LOVE this place. I 've never had bad service or bad food here. My steak is ALWAYS done perfectly.
I'm totally stuck on the Yum Yum sauce and have used it to do a similar dinner at home. YUM!
It is worth a little more $ because honestly it's dinner and a show. Great for a date, great for the kids.... -

My husband and I LOVE this place! The sushi is to die for and the rest of the food is delicious! My favorite is the Tiger Eye roll since I'm not really a fan of raw fish. My husband usually gets the lobster and I think they make the best yakisoba I have ever tasted! The service is wonderful and you always get a great show. We always leave completely satisfied! I highly recommend it!
If your not in the mood for a full meal you can always choose to sit at the sushi bar instead. -

Tacoma, WA
This is one of those Japanese "sit around the grill" joints. If you've been to a Benihana's, same thing. Kinda. The chef's knife skills are a little lacking, but they are engaging and work to make everyone feel welcome. The food is fine, but stick with the basics. Our chicken, shrimp and scallops were great but there should be a law against dicing and frying lobster.
The drinks are pricey but potent and you can opt for the funny take-home glasses if that's your thing. Buy the chef a round and the knife show steps up a notch. Bonsai!
Fun for a local occasion, but not as a habit. We haven't tried the new Sushi bar but it looked inviting and we'll be back.

Pretty good teppanyaki restaurant. It's convenient for me because I live close by. The taste of the food is not consistent. Depends on which cook u get. Although its not 4 star worthy, its a good 3 stars.

Benihana style restaurant, plus you get more bang for your hard earned money. The food is excellent, fresh & healthy. The chefs are friendly, entertaining, and very talented. The people that we were seated with were a blast. I think I've made some new friends. Try it, and you'll experience a wounderful place. TJSH is becoming more popular, and reservations are highly recommended. I would've given this place 5 stars, but they lost one star for the long wait to be seated. My fault for not making reservations.

My husband and I, along with another couple went here for dinner this past weekend. We had made reservations beforehand but somehow they didn't have our name written down. This was fine however because they took us in and seated us right away. The food (we all ordered the chicken and shrimp) was very delicious and the portions were plenty. We have been to a handful of other teppanyaki-style steak houses and the food here was very good. Our chef was fairly entertaining and nice. Unfortunately, the two gals who got us our beverages and took our payments were anything but that. They were rude and one of them even commanded our friends to "pay now" - I guess we were socializing for too long...god forbid you do that at a restaurant with your company. In the end, the food was good but service not so much. We may/may not return here.

This is a fun place to have dinner, and the bigger your group it's even more fun. Be prepared to meet total strangers sitting at your dinner 'table' with you, this adds to the experience. The chefs are funny and talented and the food is great. I have always been very pleased with amount of food you get as well as the quality. It is a bit pricey for family dinners unless your kids are adults. If you've never tried Tokyo you really have to.

Great food! Fair prices @ meals starting around $18 on up towards $30ish if you want lobster/steak. People bring their kids here too....I have, but probably wouldn't again until they're all over 10 or so....since the owner/manager guy seems a little upset at toddlers that don't stay seated.

Me and my boyfriend were looking for something new to try & stumbled across here. It was our first time & it was really enjoyable. The only thing that made me subtract a star was that the waiters should have checked on the tables more then they did. Our chef Sonny was hilarious and very talented. Portions to me were huge, which was good since I got to take some home. Another thing was to go in a group and get a table for yourselves otherwise you will be stuck with other people. Me and my boyfriend sat next to these 2 teenage girls who were very involved with themselves and did not pay much attention to what the chef was doing. The bill was up there in the price range but I think it was well worth it. :)

I've been to comparable teppan yaki restaurants in Tacoma, Federal way , Tukwila and Seattle and this place is by far the best. Benihana is supposed to be the best because it is a chain and expensive but Tokyo is less expensive with larger portions, and the food tastes better. Full bar with strong drinks. To me, lobster is too dry on a grill like this and I would save your money for a steakhouse.
Good for children because it is relaxed atmosphere, they dont have to be silent, and they have something to watch to keep their attention so they don't get squirmy and impatient. There are some parts where they set the grill on fire and it might startle some small children. -

We tried to eat in the sushi bar and it was excellent. It's in the pricey side but so worth it. The Japanese sushi chef is very friendly and accomodating, and made us free dessert afterwards. Everything that we ordered are all delicious and fresh. We will try there tepenyaki in our next visit.
